ah but you see I can never reply with a raccoon strawman, it's only effective as an unprompted initial tool

see I don't know much about the mental capability of raccoons but I don't want my takes to end up in your implicit short term memory so you can recall them later to shit on them in form of a raccoon strawman

it's not something I need in my life

the mii debate is the first broken base issue that has made me seriously consider not doing this anymore

the number of people who prefer swaths of identical characters makes me feel completely alienated in this community for the first time ever
I think you're being way too melodramatic about it, there's no "broken base"

If the alienation I felt over the decade of Wii / Wii U casual Nintendo era wasn't too much for me then you can handle this

Today is totally mid 2000s Nintendo for me. Clubhouse Games, Big Brain Academy, and Switch Sports. Love me some Blue Ocean Nintendo.

The lack of content in comparison to Sports Resort is definitely much more disappointing to me than Sportsmates, lol. It’s clear that they’re rushing the game out with the leg strap not even having full functionality for months.

It just seems Nintendo isn’t willing to give their multiplayer games enough content at launch, unless it’s called Smash or Mario Kart.

Not sure you can count Mario Kart as well since it was obviously also rushed for released as well back in the Wii U era.

Super functional back then but the Battle Mode and character roster really made it seem like the game was rushed. I could be wrong on this tho.

2 Switch 2 Sports will be exceptional then 😜

No-So-Hot-Take: People can have whatever opinions they want about Sportsmates (or whatever else for that matter) and there's nothing wrong with that. I like them, but can see why others don't. I don't like Miis, but can see why others do.

I wasn't quite so online then, so I've never experienced something so disillusioning before

I think it’s less “rushing” games and more that they’ve noticed doling out content updates over time keeps people engaged/coming back (because of NSO). Not to mention said updates have the added benefit of being something they can use as Direct stuffer or quick Twitter drops to generate extra excitement. Personally I prefer the old ways, cuz I’m old and set in my ways.

So, HFW copied the blight from Zelda.

/s

Serious note, the game looks and feels awesome. The adaptive triggers and sounds takes it to the next level.

Good point, that and the fact that Mario Kart 7 didn’t have a VS mode. But I still think MK is one of the better ones in this regard with it launching with 32 well made tracks and tons of kart customization.

I may have just had the best food I've ever eaten and by gosh was it not what I would've expected in a million years.

It was a brussel sprouts dish.

Just look at this bad boy

Nintendo fans actively like homogeneity now and I've never felt so lost
This is just such a weird generalization to me. Like, I'm "old". I was born in 1990 and my first Nintendo device was a Game Boy with Toy Story and Super Mario Land. My first console was a Super Nintendo. And I really, really love Miis and I don't want to see them disappear forever. But sportsmates genuinely feel more "modern", even without the crazy amount of customization options.

The Wii was homogenity to me, with its boring, pseudo-Apple aesthetic, and its low-skill ceiling games. The Switch, however, is diversity in terms of output. Still not the crazy free-range third party JRPG output as on the SNES, but damn Nintendo's making so much more interesting first party content to me than on the Wii.

"Nintendo fans love homogeny now". Well, if Nintendo Switch Sports' sportsmates having fewer customization options represents all of Nintendo's current output, and the subset of fans that is fine with sportsmates represents all of Nintendo's fanbase, maybe you're right.

For what it's worth, there's Miis in the game, and we don't even know the entire scope of sportsmates customization yet, so who cares.

Nintendo fans love homogeneity. That’s why everyone’s favorite Mario game is Sticker Star and people desperately want more anime swordsmen in Smash.

I’m gifting my nephew a Switch with Mario Kart, Mario Odyssey, Lego City Undercover and FIFA (I’m iffy on the last one but he loves soccer so shrug). I can’t wait to see his face.

I suppose I mean aesthetic homogeneity, which I suspect is why they feel more modern, as you say

they are facially identical. I think that's an obvious step down, most think it's a step up. this disconnect is the root of my current feelings
Is there any official word on Miis being phased out

Is there any official word on Miis being phased out
I don't think they've spoken on it with any specificity. early switch interviews suggested they were de-emphasized for the sake of not overtly tying the new system to the old ones

I find it seriously alienating that so many people on the site look at this image and say "good, no more ugly Miis"

not because it's racist or politically incorrect, I'm not trying to say that sort of shit

it's just because it's so fucking boring

I keep getting more excited. A new 3D platformer from the king of 3D platformers. It doesn't happen often enough.
I'm really psyched for Kirby and I went in media blackout after the first game. I just wanna clarify about the king part, is EPD contributing to development? Or did you mean HAL?

Well that’s case 1 of Danganronpa done. For some reason I have a couple twists I’m anticipating coming
Time to take a break and make some food tho. Then I have a kit I want to work on. Then I’ll make the call on if I’m doing another case or playing some Digimon. Annoyed I didn’t do
Junko’s interaction before she was offed… but that was suspicious too

you've never felt that an enthusiast community's fundamental preferences are so far removed from your own that it's not worth engaging with anymore?
Well to start with I was sort of unaware there is a big Mii controversy to begin with

Second off, I think my opinions are pretty boring and boilerplate most of the time

My "Dairanger is middling" take might tear the Super Sentai fandom apart, though

there's no controversy, just a handful of baffled people like me who don't get it

afaik I'm one of two people on the site who feel strongly about it (hi @TheMindOfThomas)

I'd say the only thing I "prefer" about Sportsmates (is that really what they're called?) is it takes the pressure off of me having to create a humorous looking Mii, since everyone's character looks dumb.

Oh I just meant Nintendo generally. HAL is developing as far as I know. Although it does look very good for a group that usually does 2D.

My most controversial take in the Nintendo fandom is probably that the GameCube was underwhelming but I think that's one people are still 50/50 on.

I dont care for avatar characters in general so it’s whatever to me.

Granted, I’ve seen very little discussion about Mii’s and sportmates in a lot of podcasts and videos I’ve seen. Looks like folks just don’t care enough. Probably has to do that Mii’s haven’t been as widely used in the switch era. Like there’s options to use them in some games and whatnot, but never the focus.

I think that Miis are way more fun and interesting than those boring-ass Xbox Avatars, but like I really don't care, I'm not playing Switch Sports for the characters in it.

Also, you'll be able to have a Mii character in the game, won't you ?

candidly I find indifference comforting in the face of inexplicable preference

I think maybe some of the clone nightmare will be alleviated when it actually releases and there are more customization options and not literally five identical things to rotate through

and the fact that they still have the Miis hopefully means my corner of destruction will still be chaotic

but tbd, truly, we just don’t actually know yet

believe me I’m with you on the Mii team but I also don’t think it’ll be as dire as it looks right now

plus I don’t think people being interested / intrigued by the sportsmates mean they’re devoted to the homogeny — probably more about there being a new direction and seeing where it goes

I’m pretty sure everyone would be disappointed if the avatars in the demo were the only ones in the game, including your unseen enemies working from the shadows, voting against your preferences and planning to topple your tiny kingdom of reason to the ground as you beg, not for mercy, but for karmic revenge — that they may suffer as you have suffered while the years sublimate from their skin and the old gods of Nintendo forget who they are

all dogs go to heaven

every raccoon walks backwards into hell

Nintendo could have avoided this whole controversy if they had just used anime avatars in all of their games. Everyone would be unified and at peace.
They did avoid it. They announced the Wii U and 3DS e-shop closures to distract from the mii Erasure.

Those bastards.

I think it wouldn't be so bad if there were more hairstyles, but that's my lowly opinion.

I just can't be bothered to have strong opinions about avatar characters in a sports game or Miis in general

Where's Donkey Kong

I'm trying to only judge the uniformity of the background characters, which ostensibly are final

Nintendo should create a third avatar system that lets you create a lifeless but realistically proportioned doll a la PS Home or New Donkers, then include them in a random game along with Miis and Sportsmates. It’d be a fucking mess and the internet will love it.

Isn't it expected/datamined that Nintendo Switch Sports will have unlockable customization options ?

Homogenity wouldn't be an issue then.

I'm trying to only judge the uniformity of the background characters, which ostensibly are final
they appeared to draw from the same avatar pool, at least as far as I could tell

and I’m hopeful the mii options mean you can force your created nightmares to live in the haunted walls of sport

My biggest issue with Switch Sports so far is the lack of Archery. That, sword fighting, and ping pong were my favorite sports in Resort. Archery is the sport I spent the most time with, lots of skill which made it fun to master and was very competitive in multiplayer even taking turns. Bring back Wuhu if they have to. Miis are still present, I miss Wuhu.

I don't care about Miis or Sportsmates, all I want is the eldritch amalgamation of the two... the Sportsmiite
