Fun fact: this boss character was originally a rejected Pikachu redesign

I finally listened to @NateDrake podcast episode for the direct and I think he should check out the Striker games again cause they are absolutely content deprived lol. Being NLG in the dev chair shouldn’t really get the benefit of the doubt. Not a fan of the Camelot sports game for switch but they did a better job compared to strikers with their switch and GameCube games.

-The 1st one has less then Mario tennis on Wii U
And the second less then the switch sport games.

NLG is cool and their sports game play great. but I would be cautious.

Also Mario Strikers on Wii is the better technical game. Picking characters that matter, legit tier list with Dry Bones being a great defensive option compared to Hammer Bro for example, passing to charge up the ball and special abilities made it much more competitive.

GameCube version is more arcady fun since everyone plays exactly the same. Toad can do anything Mario can except super shot.

-Chrono Cross disliked more then Mario Sunshine is a surprise.

-was Wrong on Fire Emblem mainline game. Unforgivable sin. @bellydrum give him a “I love Mario Sunshine” tag please. But honestly Warriors made more sense since I’ve been waiting for it to happen. KT wouldn’t let this chance pass them by to make a title of a mainline they helped with. And always felt it should come out first then the new mainline cause by then folks might not care for those characters as much anymore. Probably was suppose to come out last year honestly.

- I thought the Splatoon Trailer was fine since it’s always been like that. Weird trailers with their style. Rather they keep doing their thing but then again. It being super weird just makes me go “I don’t get it, I’m not interested”. So maybe be more welcoming. I’m expecting a splatoon Direct Last 2 had one. Get a release date then I feel for July.

so i just got dragonball fighterz cuz it was on sale and playing through it just reminded me: why tf arent any of the mvc games on the switch? i need them on the go dammit. and yeah i know its probably rights issues but nintendo got a exclusive marvel game so come on. they can work something out.

The currently announced roster doesn't instil much confidence: Charged had 12 captains and 8 sidekicks, Battle League is launching with 10 captains and no sidekicks apparently which makes me think they're gonna drip-feed the content like the other Mario Sports games. Tennis Aces is in a decent place now but it took a while to get there. I just hope there will be enough to keep people engaged beyond the online mode.

Yeah, I suspect Strikers is going to be very much like Tennis Aces (didn't try Golf). It looks great and plays well, but the amount of content on day one, and the organisation of that content might not be enough for people who don't want to play primarily online. I'd assume it'll be a strong local multiplayer game, too.

Still bitter Tennis Aces didn't have a fleshed out Tournament mode.

My dude.

And this which is still in the planning stages (the newsletter has had some good stuff re: NWC): https://www.fanstratics.com/

Oh damn! Well I was technically right that nobody has made one yet!

That looks great though!
As much as I'm turning into the "Zelda Music Guy" - and as much as I adore those soundtracks - the Heroes II-IV Soundtracks were extremely formative for me as a composer. The soundtracks are full of little miniatures expertly capturing the different moods and environments. If I ever get to (co-)write the soundtrack for a great Heroes-like game I'd jump for joy.

A few favourites:

Heroes III Tower
Heroes IV Academy
Heroes III Fortress
Heroes IV Sea (these Celtic tracks came from a music pack made by Riverdance musicians with some little added orchestrations - likely a result of Heroes IV's rushed development)
Heroes II Grass

Between 3DO dragging New World Computing into the abyss and the dubious demise of Black Hole Entertainment after the release of Heroes VI one'd think the series is cursed...

I think the biggest issue with Aces was the balance. Not to bang my own drum, but I was very good at that game and won the vast majority of my matches. And I played a lot.

But the trick shots were poorly balanced, get out of jail free cards that made every rally incredibly draining and allowed poor players to hang with much better players for far too long.

Characters like Bowser Jnr had a crazy reach too.

The vanilla play mode just felt too barebones to me. Not sure if the game was rebalanced in any way, but I found it frustrating because, as a good player, I felt people were holding on to my coat tails all the time - even when I was easily outplaying them.

Of course, it's a party sports game and I have no problem with game gimmicks eroding the skill gap - MK being a good example - but it felt too heavy-handed in Aces for me.

I quit out of exhaustion in the end, I was winning... but I felt like I was winning five or six shots later than I should have been all the time - or maybe I wasn't as good as I thought! :p

In other news, after performing CPR on my Switch for the last day, I think it may just pull through.

I hadn't played it for four months and it took like a day to charge and turn on at all.

Then it went from 100% to 1% in about two minutes.
A few attempts later it went from 100% to 1% in about half an hour.
A few more charges saw it go from 100% to 1% in just under an hour.

But it never actually died, so I read around online and it seemed like my battery indicator might be broken? So at 1% I turned on XC2 and played a couple of MK8 Grand Prix and it survived.

After that I started a process on the Nintendo support page to try and fix my clock. The next attempt saw the Switch go from 100% to 1% in about two hours and 20 minutes.

And this morning, after an hour, it's at 80%. So I think it's returning back from the dead?

I may buy an OLED yet later this year... but yeah, it makes you appreciate it being there when you fear it could be buggered.

I regret posting positively about the sportsmates

I didn't think Raccoon would start hating me for it

This boss definitely channels the ugly designs of the Broodals from Odyssey, I agree.

Jokes aside it looks really great. Starting to think this could be something special.
I wanted 3D Donkey Kong. I expected Mario Odyssey 2. I'm pleasantly surprised by 3D Kirby.

Still too early to know for sure, but not long to wait now and I agree this is looking like it could be something special.

Strikers still needs to have more characters than Aces or Golf on launch as 8 characters needed to in the arena at once. There has to enough character to mix/match four of them for a team and no, babies won't do. I reckon full Bowser kids and Broodals will be there on launch day.

For future updates, they can have crossovers. Maybe it will be possible to form a full Kong team?

I dunno if it was the same music team (probably was) but the soundtrack for Might and Magic 7 was also absolutely sublime.

Particularly these two:

Whew, that's a blast from the past for sure :O . Yep, the same team AFAIK! I had written a paragraph about M&M7 but deleted it because it was the only M&M that I have any experience with, so 1). glad you brought it up and 2). GIT OUT OF MY BRAIN.

Never finished it BTW, it was quite an obtuse game - but also very mysterious and inspiring.

Looking forward to hanging out with all the old geezers in the HoMM Startopic! ;)

Low key excited for the Cyberpunk 2077 news today. Bought it on sale for Xbox a while ago but never touched it.

God I loved the Celtic tracks on Heroes IV. The grass theme is so good.

I’ve looked up screenshots of M&M and it looks like the series’ graphics went from simple to weird but charming to looking like a fake game you’d see on CSI: New York.
Early 3D was a mistake. Although the lead designer on HoMM 3 basically said that art was one of NWC's weak spots.

It's one of my favorite games of all time. I'll find time to make a retrospective but the progression systems in it are just divine, it's like the peak of RPG progression. The feeling from being novice in a skill to expert to master to grandmaster, and getting all of the massive boosts in capabilities that come with it, it's just awesome. And I love the wackiness, how you go from being killed by giant rats and bats to becoming a flying group of blaster rifle wielding demi-gods taking down like a dozen dragons and titans without breaking a sweat. It's gaming bliss.

Anyway, if you ever want to try it again and need help with the obtuseness I can explain anything in much more detail than it requires.

1 was very simple, yeah.

2 I think was pretty charming and had good visuals for its day.

3 was kinda meh.

Xeen had probably the best visuals, they were very (intentionally) goofy.

6-8 were rough and quirky but had their own charm.

9 was very rough, and had very few redeeming qualities (much like the game overall)

Honestly a remaster of 6-8 with much higher quality sprites and environmental textures would look fantastic today, IMO.

This is actually pretty awesome.

https://www.playstation.com/en-us/games/horizon-forbidden-west/play-and-plant/

For the release of Horizon Forbidden West*, we want to do something to help nature... with you. Just like how Aloy fights to save the Earth in the game, we can do something together to help our planet.

Play Horizon Forbidden West and unlock the "Reached the Daunt" trophy before March 25th, and we, in partnership with the Arbor Day Foundation, will plant a tree across the country to help complete 3 different reforestation projects.**

So let's grab our controllers and play for our planet!

Might take you up on that one day, I've got it on GOG (and probably also have the original CD-ROM version somewhere on the attic...) - mostly for nostalgia reasons. The furthest along I came was when I aligned with Heaven and got a swanky blue skin for the UI.

I kinda love that pre-rendered sprite look that VI-VIII and Heroes III-IV rocked in a Donkey Kong Country sort of way.

Not to be Deborah Downer here

but if they cared about the environment the PS5 (AND Xbox Series X for that matter!!!) would maybe not use a COLOSSAL amount of energy lmao

It seems the reforestation needs around 288k trees. Given how many copies this game is going to sell, Sony probably already set aside the money knowing the goal would be hit easily. This is just a bit of marketing to make players feels like they are contributing to something.

Don't get me wrong, it's great that they are donating in the first place. I just wish they came out and said they were donating 288k trees in honor of the release of the game and not use it to convince a few gamers to chase after a dumb achievement.

Oh, so you got pretty far into it! Most people kinda lose interest or get stuck in the Dwarven Barrows, unsurprisingly.

I'm seriously wondering if the "maintenance" on the store page has just been to keep people from flooding their servers looking for Joy-Con candy molds

That's why we shouldn't have photorealistic graphics, now the Gamers™ are going to freak out with woman with manly beards!
Back to PSX polygons.
PS1 Lara Croft is obviously the peak of realistic human anatomy and what all games should strive for. /s

Arbor Day is April 29th, so seems like a strange cut off date for this “promotion”

I hooked up my old Wii U and played Wii Sports Resort last night

comparing it to the new one, we have strayed from Allah's light and grace indeed...

Niche titles like Wii Sports getting new games on Switch. Meanwhile, billion dollar games like The Last Story aint getting a sequel. Get on it Nintendo!
