A bit of both really. I notice you have a subset of Nintendo fans who are still really into the classic core of nintendo I guess.

I've definitely seen people say some directs were bad cause they were heavier on the jrpgs vs what we call tradtional Nintendo stuff will be.
I mean, I'd argue JRPGs especially are a classic genre for Nintendo systems. Platforms like SNES, GBA, DS and 3DS were extraordinarily well represented in those genres. Square Enix in particular on Switch feels like a return to that classic strength of theirs on Nintendo systems.

As for Nintendo's output, I'd say they have more 'visible' traditional JRPGs in the form of Xenoblade and Fire Emblem, and Pokemon is now on the hybrid so is part of a single software library; but a series like Paper Mario has moved away from being a pure RPG, Golden Sun is yet to return, and Mario & Luigi is pretty much dead. So on the first party front, I'd definitely disagree.

Perhaps this is something felt more keenly by fans of Nintendo's home systems, rather than the portable audience? Certainly, N64, GC, Wii and Wii U only had a handful of notable RPGs versus the plethora available on handhelds, and they were never home to Golden Sun or Mario & Luigi. To me, Switch's strength in RPGs comes more from third-parties than Nintendo, and it's completely in keeping with what I came to expect on their handheld systems.

I wholly agree with this. That Fire Emblem has risen so significantly in importance to Nintendo in terms of the Western market is insane when you remember that at one point they were considering cutting Marth and Roy from Melee for the western release because they never released any of the FE games up to that point. Or at least that's the story I've read / heard.

Yeah I don’t get it when people dismiss an rpg, like, outside of some exceptions - N64 being the prime example people love to use - Nintendo and RPGs has always been a thing for me since… forever? The rpg droughts we had on the 64 and GC, were evened out by the sheer amount we got on GB/GBC, GBA, DS, 3DS. But of course, there was a long era where many people would say those systems don’t count because they don’t connect to a TV, which is absurd.

Philistines. Some of my best memories were playing GB games with Super Game Boy and powering through Mother 3 on a Game Boy Player.

Would be tough for a Japanese company to make a WRPG.
Hasn't stopped Square-Enix from trying!

Monolith Soft proving themselves the superior subsidiary by actually shipping a music RPG this year (Xenoblade 3 has flutes, gang).

It's also funny to think about that Tokyo Mirage Sessions was released on the Wii U while Retro wouldve been working on this game.

TBH while I would love that I was mostly kidding with my post. Would be tough for a Japanese company to make a WRPG.

Eh, depends on what you mean by "WRPG". I feel like people intuitively know which games are WRPGs and which ones are JRPGs in 99% of the cases but if you try to actually define them you will quickly see that there's many overlapping as well as conflicting characteristics. From a gameplay perspective, Monolith's Soma Bringer for example is much closer to Diablo than many other JRPGs.

Dark Souls is probably more of a WRPG than most WRPGs these days but it's still called a JRPG so what do I know?

Damn, that made me laugh hard.

What counts as a WRPG anyway? I’d love a Nintendo take on cRPGs, you know stuff like Baldur’s Gate and Divinity.
Honestly it's subjective. Generally if it's from a western studio it's a WRPG, if it's stylized like one of the old PC D&D-style games it's a CRPG. If it's from a Japanese studio it's a JRPG.

It's a dumb naming convention IMO. There are better ways to describe subgenres of RPGs, like turn-based, isometric, action, first person, etc.

What an absolute awful day in Famiboards history:

Botw2 delay talk, and the call for more WRPGs from Nintendo
Sends shivers down my spine.

ARPGS
BRPRS
CRPGS
DRPGS
Etc

We can go through the whole alphabet and see which letters Nintendo needs to cover
Action (Ys)
Butt (Nier Automata)
Computer (Baldurs Gate)
Dungeon (Etrian)
Emotional (Earthbound-like, aka Undertale/Moon)
First person (Skyrim)
Grindy (early DQ)
Heartful (modern DQ)
Isometric (modern CRPGs like Divinity and Pillars)

This is a lot harder than I thought and I don't feel like figuring out the other 17 at moment

I do think that, if your vision of classic Nintendo is based on N64/GC software and you weren't into portables, there's two areas in Nintendo's line up which i could see being an issue:

- Rare's output. From the mid 90s to the early 2000s, Rare provided 2D and 3D platformers, first and third person shooters, a racing game, a beat em up, and an action adventure game. No single Nintendo studio provides that diversity today outside of EPD.Some of that is simple logistics and the way the games industry has evolved. Individual studios big enough to make multiple large scale games in very different genres are very er, rare these days.

Greater investment in Retro and Next Level especially might help with this area - Retro have made excellent first-person adventure games and excellent 2D platformers; it's just a shame whatever happened post Tropical Freeze has railroaded them for a time. Next Level's output is spread over a longer period than Rare, but they've covered Mario Strikers, Punch Out, Luigi's Mansion, and Federation Force. Genre and series variety again. If those two studios can handle a couple of games at a time, it would make a real difference.

- Racing games. Yeah, Rare helped here with Diddy Kong Racing and Mickey's Speedway Racing, but across N64 and GC Nintendo also shipped 2 installments of Mario Kart, F Zero, Wave Race, and 1080. It's harder to see where new games in all these franchises come from; likely it would require external collaboration and Nintendo finding the right partner.

Edit - forgot the Excite series. Forgiveness please.

What chapter are you on? XC2 is pretty slow in the beginning and takes some time to really get the main plot going, but IMO it gets better and better with pretty much every chapter as you go.
I just started chapter 3 so not too far in. Glad to hear it gets better and better. I like it enough so far that I can push through for now.

My definitive opinion on WRPGs and CRPGs based on a ridiculously small sample size

WRPGs: The only WRPG I've played so far is Skyrim (unless the new Assassin's Creed games count) and based on that I can conclude the genre sucks

CRPGs: Only one I've played is DOS:II and based on that I can conclude the genre rocks

Disgusting
So it's something that's been happening since the 3DS era, but how do you feel about RPGs being a bigger thing to Nintendo.

Personally I love but it, but every so often online and in from some outlets you get the lamentation that RPGs are a waste of time and the core of nintendo is being lost
That's a good thing. People need to expand there horizons and actually play an RPG before lambasting them for focusing on them.

The hate for NNK in this forum is real. Dont fall for it!
I enjoyed it very much, especially the characters. =)

It's deeply discounted in the eu E-shop now as well - 84% - all time low!
Ended up getting Vesperia 🥲 but I'll definitely pick up NNK eventually!! That Ghibli art style is just sooo beautiful and the story seems beautiful too

Hell yes DOS:II is amazing and more people should play it.

Very much agreed.

Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is the true butt RPG.

I’m like one of the only few people who think Kirby and the Forgotten Land can be a GOTY candidate. This games looks so good every single time I’ve seen it. Just oozes charm and I love 3D platformers. The combat looks fun. The worlds look great. Upgrading equipment I never saw coming. I’m so hyped for this game.

There are still areas where Nintendo make multiple different games in each genre, so it is a shame they don't do that with racing. A bunch of genres have multiple representation on Switch:

RPGs: Fire Emblem, Pokemon (x3), Xenoblade (2 new, 1 remaster), Ring Fit Adventure

Platformers: 2D & 3D Mario (1 original 2D 1 port 2D, 2 ports 3D, 1 new 3D), 2D & 3D Kirby, 2D Yoshi, 2D DK (port)

Party: Mario Party (x2), 1-2 Switch, WarioWare, Worldwide Classics/Clubhouse Games

Adventure/Action: Legend of Zelda (x3), Paper Mario, Luigi's Mansion (where the balance is towards adventure)

Action/Adventure: Astral Chain, Bayonetta, Metroid Dread, Fire Emblem Warriors (x2), Hyrule Warriors (x2) (where the balance is towards action)

Sports: Mario Tennis, Mario Golf, Mario Strikers, Nintendo Switch Sports

Capitalism Simulator: Animal Crossing: New Horizon

Racing: It Prints Money (otherwise known as Mario Kart 8 DX)

I've ignored sub-genres, so perhaps that inflates things. And we can also put the lack of capitalism simulators to one side for now.

But if you think about RPGs, Pokemon, Fire Emblem, and Xenoblade are each very different to one another, for example. I'd argue this is the same for Kart, Wave Race, 1080, Excite, and F Zero. Each represents a meaningfully different experience in the same genre.

Of course, the huge caveat here is there's a very simple reason we don't get those games but we do get others: all those other genres have fixed development arrangements. But I'd really like to see Nintendo secure more resources for other genres and franchises.

There's a lot about Skyrim that I should enjoy on paper but between the artstyle and its jankiness (for a modern game) I can just never get into it. Of course, I understand why it is that way and why some people can look past those elements (or even enjoy them!) but I'd love a Skyrim-like by someone else with less content but more polish.

It looks to have all the charm of a 3D Mario, so I won’t be surprised if it ends up a dark horse candidate come end of the year.

Good evening Fami pls help me 😭
I'm unsure if I buy Ni no Kuni Wrath of the Witch or Tales of Vesperia Definitive Edition.
I have 60 reais. Ni no Kuni costs 40. Tales costs 60. WHICH ONE DO I PICK 😭😭😭
Super late take but if you want a charming RPG with a fun cast, deep combat, and a colorful artstyle, pick Tales

If you want to question whether or not you even like JRPGs pick NNK

It's not really since the 3DS era. RPGs have always been important to Nintendo since they took off in Japan. They worked very hard in the NES era to try and establish a foothold for the genre in the mainstream in North America but it really wasn't until the PS1 era when FF7's marketing blitz that focused on the cutscenes that the genre took root here.

I don't think the Switch has more or less RPGs on it than previous Nintendo handhelds. It might be more a surprise to people that didn't really pay any attention to the GBA through the 3DS but Japanese RPGs have been migrating away from consoles for at least a decade at this point, with the exceptions being the companies that are either really stubborn or willing to change the overall style of the game to sell to a broader audience.

Yeah, losing Mario & Luigi still hurts because Alpha Dream was good at churning those out like clockwork.

Not yet. I think the DS had a few more spinoffs (there were like 3 Pokemon Ranger games) but it'll probably take the crown by the end of its lifecycle.

There's always going to be a high amount of people in any fandom that don't know or don't understand how things are actually made. For the longest time people thought Secret of Evermore was released in the West instead of Trials of Mana because reasons. When the reality was that Evermore was made by a different team in the US, it was late 1995 and Nintendo was starting to ramp up N64 hype for the following year (and the PS1 was starting to gain momentum), and the time needed to turn around a localization of ToM would have taken too long to get it to market in the West (unlike Japan which had SNES games releasing all the way up to 1999/2000). But some people still dunk on Evermore to this day because they don't understand the complexities of making and localizing games nor the fact that at the end of the day these are commercial products and certain tradeoffs are going to occur because companies are running a business and don't want to lose money if they can avoid it.

RPGs have always been a thing, but during the N64/GC/Wii era it was way easier to be a fan of those systems and rarley interface with the genre due to them being on other platforms mostly.

Hell even the GBA and DS to varying degrees. The 3DS and onward era is less about their be RPGs and more about the increased push and marketing the genre has gotten on Nintendo platforms.

I really, really like Nate the Hate, but I don't understand the talk that "Mario Kart DLC has people saying there won't be new Switch hardware before 2024." I haven't seen anyone say that. We've said there won't be a full Switch successor until 2024. Of course they'll have revisions.

I think my annoyance lies in the way people talk about a possible Switch Pro or Switch 2 interchangeably, when those are two VERY different conversations. Nate sort of gets into that a little later, but I've seen those two talked about interchangeably often and it always gets frustrating.

I haven’t watched that part yet, but yeah I haven’t really seen anyone say we won’t see any kind of new Switch hardware. More people will now say they don’t expect next generation hardware until 2024 or later.

Maybe I need to take a nap because I'm so cranky this morning lmao. I'm so sick of BotW2 delay discussion. There is literally zero proof that it'll be pushed to 2023 (and plenty of evidence to the opposite like, you know... a release year of 2022 being officially announced), and yet people talk about it so confidently. Exhausting.
