I mean, I'd argue JRPGs especially are a classic genre for Nintendo systems. Platforms like SNES, GBA, DS and 3DS were extraordinarily well represented in those genres. Square Enix in particular on Switch feels like a return to that classic strength of theirs on Nintendo systems.A bit of both really. I notice you have a subset of Nintendo fans who are still really into the classic core of nintendo I guess.
I've definitely seen people say some directs were bad cause they were heavier on the jrpgs vs what we call tradtional Nintendo stuff will be.
As for Nintendo's output, I'd say they have more 'visible' traditional JRPGs in the form of Xenoblade and Fire Emblem, and Pokemon is now on the hybrid so is part of a single software library; but a series like Paper Mario has moved away from being a pure RPG, Golden Sun is yet to return, and Mario & Luigi is pretty much dead. So on the first party front, I'd definitely disagree.
Perhaps this is something felt more keenly by fans of Nintendo's home systems, rather than the portable audience? Certainly, N64, GC, Wii and Wii U only had a handful of notable RPGs versus the plethora available on handhelds, and they were never home to Golden Sun or Mario & Luigi. To me, Switch's strength in RPGs comes more from third-parties than Nintendo, and it's completely in keeping with what I came to expect on their handheld systems.
