News Portal: Companion Collection (1+2) announced for Nintendo Switch (UPDATE: available now!)

Super random but since its one of my favorite series I'll buy it for sure just to support the game and also replay both gmes

these are two of my absolute favorite games, gonna be fun to do a replay on a console.

Yup yup yup, it's been a while since I beat these games, quite some time in fact, so I'll absolutely buy them for the Switch.

had so many good times playing the games back in high school (oof, that was like 10 years ago) excited to plunge myself into the portal world as Glados throws insults at me once again.

Valve man, hahah.

Really welcome release. Will it get a physical?
Also was half expecting like Team Fortress as well after seeing this.

one of those out of nowhere announcements. I'm going to buy these because I never had a chance of playing these games. I think my wife and I will love the co op in 2.

If this is true than maybe we could expect some other ports from the Shield.
We already got the most of them. Only remaining ones are Half Life 2, Tomb Raider, Metal Gear Rising and MGS Collection. I'm sure Tomb Raider will come from Feral.

Always wanted to try Portal, will 100% get this. For 20 bucks it's a steal too.

Admittedly haven't taken any sort of deep dive to look into if it had come up as a feature or not, but it would be kind of novel if they added gyro support. Being a PC gamer as well, I've really come to appreciate gyro aiming for controller oriented games. And the idea of getting to replay things like Portal or Left 4 Dead with a native implementation sounds kind of refreshing.

It's true.

Hopefully that means that ports of MGS 2 & 3 HD and Metal Gear Rising are on the cards now :D

Also worth keeping in mind that Portal 2 was never ported to the Shield; so NVidia/Lightspeed Studios are clearly willing to put some money and effort into Switch ports. Bodes well for the future :)

I apparently have such a strong emotional connection to that darn companion cube that seeing it after so long made me tear up.

Two of the best video games of all time, full stop.

Not 100% sure, but the games appear to be running at 60fps in the trailer. The Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of these games run at 30fps, so this should be the definitive console versions of these games.

Pretty much a "sure, why not" for me. As long as the performance is there, I'll be there. A physical version with both games on cart would also be very nice. Please! :)

As someone who hasn’t played Portal in about a decade and hasn’t played Portal 2 ever, I’ll take it!

I'm honestly so excited for this! A pipe dream for ports! Me and a friend can finally try completing co-op mode again 😅

Finally Portal on a recent console, been wanting this game on a console for quite a while, being on the switch just makes it better

This was a pleasant and unexpected surprise in a Direct full of pleasant and unexpected surprises! For $20? Heck yes, I'll get it!

Black Mesa probably not, due to licensing and/or legal issues.
I think optimisation would be a bigger issue with that as it's more demanding and a little less polished than the older Valve originals.
They would probably be able to work something out licensingwise as Valve is literally selling it on their own store.

This is by the same Nvidia Studio that did the Valve Nvidia Shield ports and should be pretty much based on those as they both used the Tegra.

You are in for a treat, some of the best gaming out there.

It's alot more than that. Valve did not develop Black Mesa: The Crowbar Collective did. Valve gave their blessing to them with the use of the IP, and since it was a PC title on Steam that was no issue.
Here lies the rub though: What about licensing it on other platforms? This is where it can get tricky and would require Valve, Crowbar Collective, Nvidia Lightspeed (presuming they will handle the porting like they did with Portal/Portal 2), and Nintendo.
It's technically not Valve's work, but it is using their IP. It's Crowbar Collective's work, and they themselves said they have no plans porting it to other platforms due to the legal hurdles that need to be done (i.e. they would need to draft a very special contract to make this work...and contracts require a lot of money).

I only had a Wii during the PS360 gen but I've caught up on a lot of games I missed since then, Portal 2 was the last one I was eager to play. Excited

Yeah I know, I followed the game before even the mod was released and played that original mod version on release.
The only situation I can see a console release happening in is if Valve wanted to bring the Half-Life series to console and took the initiative to maybe work something out with them.
I just think the act of selling a fangame based on your own franchise on your store is huge already and they even feature it under the Half-life franchise on sales, so they are very in favor of it.
I know it's kind of a pipe dream.
My main point was that I think the games performance wopuld hinder this from happening on the Switch right now, even if they were abele to get such a contract done.

Until then the Steam Deck is probably the only way to get that game on a Handheld.

I mean, if Valve is really crazy, they can propose releasing a Steam Link app for Switch: It's technically not a Cloud service, and they can use it as an excuse for having a "PC remote management app" on the Switch. Dunno if Nintendo would approve... (Having it being a remote service does mean it isn't truly portable. But then again, they mentioned Cloud service games were "portable" so long as you had an internet connection...)

And yeah, Steam Link basically lets you do that too: Use Microsoft Word on your Switch.

Yeah I don't think that would happen.
Wasn't there some similar service to that and Moonlight that led Switch Users along promising the sky, acting like they were already approved for a Swtich app and then turned around and acted like that never happened?

Anyway it's wild that this even exists while Valve is releasing the Steam Deck around this month.
Though the Steam Deck is an even less portable device than the Switch which I already think is a bit to big.

I think of it as a portable PC.
If you could hook up an Elgato capture card via USB, download OBS on it, you can potentially use it to stream your Nintendo Switch playthroughs portably.

But anyways, I want to try out this port of Portal as it's facinating to see what Lightspeed Studios does, given their knowledge of Tegra hardware.

I hope these offer FOV settings and gyro controls. Not sure if I want to play the myself but my girlfriend started the first one and loved it but I gave my PC away a while ago and have no interest in going back to PC gaming any time soon.
