Honestly I don't like praising companies or anything, but shoutout to Nintendo (specifically the leadership) for choosing to grow the company organically and build new teams from within, rather than just gobble up everything else.

Next Level is an outlier, but that was a long-standing partner who was going to put itself on the market one way or the other.

You've cursed it! Nintendo will panic buy Sega and all their independent studios and announce the formation of Nintendo Worldwide Studios tomorrow and put out a bland graphic with a bunch of studio logos on it.
Slightly colder than room temperature take:

Bungie is not worth $3.6B.
I mean yeah. Apparently Sony saying Bungie will remain multi-platform for now? Like, what's the point? For a little over twice that Microsoft bought a bunch of studios and different IP in the form of ZeniMax Media. What's Sony's angle here?

I don’t know what I pulled karmically to line up with Kyoshi but I’m absolutely thrilled by this development

The east side of Lake Washington is absolutely stacked for the big publishers. Microsoft and NOA in Redmond. And Sony now has Suckerpunch in Bellevue and Bungie in Kirkland. Also Valve in Bellevue.

And then just up the road, the most important player…Funko (don’t like Funko pops, but has been good for Everett and they do free art classes for the underserved).

For Sony's sake I really hope they get the rights to some very interesting cutting edge in-house tech from Bungie because that is a lot of money for a studio like that...

Now that Bungie is a Sony studio, let’s get a remake of the marathon series with the new tech (obviously not why they bought them so no chance this happens).

Zhuge seems to think it's Sony wanting to build up their F2P/GaaS catalog which has been an increasingly major part of their revenue stream but I'm not sure how buying Bungie and keeping them multiplatform will accomplish this in any way.

Maybe for their upcoming gamepass equivalent?

Sony buying Bungie so they can hold Destiny hostage in exchange for continued multi-platform Call of Duty.

Meanwhile Nintendo have clogged up EPD building Yabuki's FPS in order to compete.

Yeah, that sum of many is just too much for a company that bleeds money from every branch except Playstation. This is one studio and one IP.

acquisitions are fucking stupid and this model of video game studio consolidation will do nothing positive

This sounds like Sony wants to basically start following in Microsoft's footsteps and not limit their audience to people who buy Playstation products.

Again not exactly sure how Bungie helps with this.

Nintendo leadership gathers in a large board room. President Furukawa speaks:

"Market consolidation is getting out of hand! How should we respond?"

Everyone looks around for someone--anyone--with an idea. The room is silent.

Finally, one developer stands. He does not introduce himself or his idea. He simply mutters the phrase everyone so desperately needed to hear:

"1-2 Switch sequel"

He sits. Everyone cheers. Furukawa nods triumphantly.

I'm all for small studios getting funded handsomely but I'm against the stupid idea to acquiring studios just to have more exclusives on the platform. If what you create is not enough for you in the console race, you shouldn't be in console race anyway. They need to start founding studios from scratch.

Yeah. It’s not like the Zynga deal (which was also insane) that gives you a ton of backend processes for mobile monetization and development. Does Bungie really offer a scaleable platform for Sony? I really don’t know (and also don’t care as those type of games don’t really appeal to me).

A FEBRUARY THREAD!?!?!?!?!? It is January 32nd in Japan! Lock this thread immediately! Delete it so it does not poison the minds of the innocent! I will not have Team January erased from the volumes of history! Reported and ratio and cringe! 😀

Nintendo clogged up EPD by assigning internal resources to an acquisition management simulator not intended for public release, but which is actually designed to help Nintendo figure out who to buy.

Of course, because EPD can't finish games quickly enough, the pace of acquisitions in the industry has rapidly outpaced the in-development simulator.

I'm so fuckin tired

It's sad how many people need to be told the first thing. Of course it's been months, it's a $3.6 billion deal. An email doesn't get sent to certain people in a business without needing to get the insight and approval of 10 higher ups.

The kind of people that believe Sony would and could just randomly decide to buy Bungie literally less than two weeks after Microsoft announced the Activision deal, are the same people that believe February is a real month. 😀

Nintendo should buy and merge their independent development partners because of reasons relating to news. Say hello to Creatures Laboratory, Intelligent Freak, and Feelzo.

Nintendo can always soothe the hurt feelings of a Xenoblade 3 delay with a Xenoblade X port. But I guess we'll see whenever Xenoblade 3 is announced.

The only way Nintendo can counter the giant acquisitions of Microsoft and Sony in the past week is to announce Smash 7 will be a fishing simulator.

As if Nintendo would ever acquire the notoriously unproductive Team January. They've already got Retro Studios and EPD, they don't need more dead weight.

Man, it sure is great that capitalism tends towards perfect competition and not towards a cartel of huge companies owning everything.
