News Metaphor: ReFantazio announced by Atlus, releasing on Oct 11th [Read Staff Post]

I presume it was an attempt to further differentiate it from P5, seeing as how this game is using its engine.

Yeah, but it doesn't seem like an interesting differentiation at all relative to the dev time cost. Having actually different art probably would have been a more interesting and meaningful selling point.

Finally watched the whole thing, and I am really excited to play this... however I do think I'll wait for Switch 2. I am currently really trying to focus on my backlog of games I missed over the years... including the entire Xenoblade series (playing 1), returned to Pokemon for the first time since Black with Violet, Paper Mario TTYD first time ever soon, Persona 5 is on my list also for later this year... breaking this habit of day 1 games and FOMO is hard but probably for the best!

If it means anything, I believe SMTV:V is going to be the last time a rerelease like this that happen. Midori slightly confirmed it, but generally Atlus seems to be moving away from the "enhanced rerelease" thing.

If true, it's a very good news :)

I'm really excited about Metaphor, but I'll wait for the Super Switch version.

What exactly am I seeing when I see what looks like action gameplay? Is that just how the turnbased combat is presented?
You can mop up weaker enemies through action combat, not exactly a new concept to jrpgs but they fleshed it out a bit more here.

It’s a cool way to streamline lower level encounters without just auto-winning like with Ryuji’s ability in P5. I really like the idea

Not if you are good enough at designing turn based systems to make the encounters fun.

But I guess that’s too hard for P Studio so they can waste years on an action system instead, lol.
Their approach to turn based system is the most fun system ever (for me) but it still becomes tedious to grind in fights that are not stimulating

Even the best turn based combat systems get grindy and tedious with low level encounters. There’s a reason why streamlining such battles has become a fairly commonplace QoL feature.

Action combat is a neat way to go about that problem. I think it was well worth the effort, although I highly doubt they “wasted years” on it.

So excited for both Metaphor ReFantazio and Shin Megami Tensei V Vengeance, man what an amazing year for jRPGs! The focus on a more mature, political, philosophical and fantasy settings is looking great. I definitely missed the mature/darker themes and atmosphere of the older games... Really getting tired of the usual teenager party members and school settings haha, not against it but its time for something different. Catherine was also a pretty fun and different/interesting new IP they created with adult and relatable characters!

Combat looks quick and pretty fun, love to see that its hybrid between real time and turn based

I feel like assets need anti-aliasing or something, reminds me of some KoeiTecmo games like Fire Emblem Three Houses (Persona 5 Strikers included) that had weird/rough lines for all character models. Looks a bit weird IMO. Loving the atmosphere, art and most importantly more mature setting and cast though!

Outside of the name of this game and the battle theme - I really like almost everything I've seen with this game.
It's a bit weird to me we've seen so much of it and it's almost 6 months out.

Complaining about Atlus being bad at designing turn-based combat systems is certainly a take

A very old quality of life trick in the RPG game is not the sign of being bad at designing encounters what in the world are you talking about

Also in what world did they spend years designing an action system?

Yeah I have to say, for all the stuff I criticise Atlus for, turn-based combat systems isn’t one of them, and I mainly play turn-based games.

Game just looks better and better, I'm pretty pumped for this

I'm just hoping the story is at least decent. At bare minimum, the combat and gameplay loop are bound to be aces

Wonder if Atlus will have this on Switch 2 at launch of if a port comes way later.

I'm genuinely curious what RPG you think handles this better. Having played a number of RPGs, the only handlings of this dilemma I've really loved are Earthbound (instant win!) and TOK (smash em and they be gone).

The "Fast and Squad" name for the battle system is interesting (kinda boring) lol. I like how they are incorporating the scan feature with Fae Sight.

Also I wonder if the Archetypes were designed by a guest artist because they feel like from a different game (they remind me of monark).

Not sure. They kinda look like Persona replacements matching the style of the setting. And

By awakening Archetypes, the protagonists can transform into Archetypes during command battles if they have them equipped.

Tranforming protags, I'm not the only one who's reminded of Xeno 3 Ouroboros, right? Also Kuro no Kiseki.

I still coping for the announcement of Project X Zone 3, with Sonic as the first character revealed.
But this isn't the moment.

Second showcase was pretty nice, happy to actually see the combat in action. Job systems are kinda tough to get invested into from trailers alone, but I'm sure that it'll feel great once I've got my hands on the game.

Still think the UI mostly sucks, though.

The combat system has far more strategic depth than P5, and this is going to be a game close to the SMT series that I'll be looking forward to.

I feel like every Metaphor trailer just never shows me what the game is, or what the hook is.

It's always just a busy mess.

yeah this is pretty much exactly how I feel whenever I see of them

it probably doesn't help that I haven't watched any of the gameplay showcase stuff they've done or played Atlas games in general(although I do intend to check out a Persona game one of these days i've just never gotten around to it)

It's road trip Persona but with more SMT-y combat and a job system instead of demons

Main thing I have questions about now is how the whole road trip mechanic actually ends up playing out, especially with relation to stuff like the Supporter (Confidant) system and the general story progression

But yeah the actual trailers for this game kinda...suck? Like they're visually cool looking at face value but do basically nothing to communicate what the game is while focusing on characters and story elements in the most vague ways possible

Want to play this, but Sparking Zero comes out the same day and that gets priority.

Will probably need to start it in 2025.

That info dump was like a roller coaster seeing EO stuff plus knowing Yuji Himukai did some work is great to hear. But then I saw that he worked on the archetypes and I shrugged. Yuji art is fantastic, but it also helps that there are colors, something the archetypes are lacking 😐.

Also, this is some serious copium, but there is alot of EO stuff in the game, compare to other atlus games, EO6 coming soon? 😷

I feel like that’s exactly what they’re going for - they want to put the style and visuals front and center, give you just enough about the combat and mechanics and story to get you interested, and that’s it. They’re banking on ‘road trip persona in a fantasy setting with wild visuals’ being enough to hook people. This is Atlus - they’re secretive to a fault and don’t want to talk about anything substantial regarding story or characters or anything. At least that’s the impression I get.

Hands-on impressions and previews will probably do a lot of the heavy lifting here.

What I wonder is how effective this will be to get a wider audience. Most of the big RPG-heads I know and Atlus fans etc. are pretty much sold, but will that really be enough to get more people in that aren’t in that hardcore RPG niche?

The music 🫶

Though I’ll probably still hold out for the potential Switch 2 port, to be honest. Don’t see myself play this on PC instead.

Not overly familiar with Atlus' devs or teams. Should I be cautiously optimistic or is this being developed by the same people whose games contained lots of homophobia before?

Yeah, it’s Hashino and his folks again, meaning homophobia might be in there. Hopefully not, but I’d be surprised if they learned their lesson.

Christ. Thanks, will pass. Have learned my lesson with all modern Personas and Catherine. Hoping if it's in there it gets panned

I don’t know how else to put it, but there’s a Hieronymus Bosch-ness to some of the enemy designs that really goes over well with me. They’re so utterly fucked-up looking.

Don't own a PS5 but I'm so tempted for this and P3R.

But I have so much stuff to play in the meantime that I can maybe just hold out for Switch 2 and avoid PS5 altogether.

Either way I'm very excited about this game.
