There's this weird issue on Safari (iPad) where the icon on tabs for Famiboards is displaying the Resetera icon and it's driving me nuts lol. Not enough to clear cache and such though.

Finished Dread on Hard Mode on my first flight home! 6 hours approx. I think I’m done with this game now 😄

He did escape the basement though!

Dungeon Encounters came out in October and Ito directed it!
I know! I thought he escaped twice, and we just didn’t know it 😆

I imagine this is at least partially a joke, but just so it's out there that's what I'm planning on doing.

Nintendo Direct Speculation |ST Q1 2022|
If you wanted to be abyssy you could name the first Fami direct speculation thread ST16 and confuse probably like half the people here. 😏

If we can get:

Project Re-Fantasy
New Xenoblade
Arceus (Being Great)
Literally anything mainline Persona on consoles (Ports)
And Digimon Survive not being vaporware

All next year, it may actually meet 2021 in terms of quality for JRPG's. Would definitely not hurt if we got FF16 at the tail end of next year as well as maybe DQ3 Remake or Treasures

Final Fantasy XVI is looking like a PS5 timed exclusive for 2023 (if they do H2 2022, they'll need a PS4 version). I'd bet on either Xbox Series port in 2024 or a a Dane downport in 2024 to juice up those Japanese sales.

I'm kinda skeptical of Atlus. Not too sure if we will get mainline Persona games on Switch (won't believe it until it's actually on my Switch) as well as Project: Fantasy (if that comes out lol).

Is Forspoken getting a PS5 version? Pretty sure they could release it at the end of next year without a need for a PS4 version.

Its why I said consoles :p

(Watch them release P4 on PS4 but not Switch)

Often I stock up on games around this time of year, try everything out over the holidays, then start choosing what to focus on first. Here’s some (very early!) impressions from this year’s haul:

Pokémon Shining Pearl
I haven’t played a Pokémon game in the better part of a decade, so I can’t really speak to the overall trajectory of the series. Having fun with this so far though! I personally really like the look. Looking forward to chipping away at a nice, breezy RPG over the winter.

Dusk
I finally played through Quake thanks to this year’s re-release and absolutely loved it. Dusk seemed like a fun throwback to that era of FPSes and a next logical step. Very fun so far! Exciting from the opening seconds and keeps things zipping along from there. Love the slide maneuver. Love the Terminator 2 style flip-to-reload for the shotgun even more. Then I got TWO shotguns and…well, I think I might play through this one first.

Metroid Dread
I have to be honest…I’m not really enjoying this game so far. Between being a pretty big Metroid fan and hearing so many people rave about it, consider me surprised!

I love the fluidity of the movement and how snappy everything feels, and the audio has impressed me so far. I really like the creepy sounding voice overs. Not much else has come together for me yet. I extremely dislike the EMMI conceit entirely thus far. I feel like I want to just get going, pick up some upgrades and explore the planet and the cat-and-mouse EMMI zones are killing the momentum for me. It’s nice that dying to one restarts you just outside their zone instead of the last save point, because…I’ve died a few times already lol. I don’t mind a challenge in theory — I played and adored Sekiro, for example — I just don’t think this particular challenge is fun or well-designed at all.

I’ll say too that although the smooth framerate is great, I find the look of the game to be sort of…flat? Like it’s missing some lighting. I don’t think the EMMIs look very interesting either. That thing that whups you at the beginning seems cool though, and I can see them being a worthy adversary. Not sure I’ll get there though. Super disappointing start for me.

Tetris Effect Connected
I think Tetris is one of the best video games ever conceived, and I love Tetsuya Mizuguchi! So it’d be just about impossible for Tetris Effect to do me wrong. Indeed, it’s the game I’ve played the most so far this holiday. Interested to try out the multiplayer with the wife.

Death’s Door
Decided to go for this one after hearing so many good things about it on the Fire Escape podcast, and I’m really glad I did. Taken down two bosses so far. Really enjoying the mix of exploration, creating shortcuts & combat encounters between the big fights. Into the aesthetic, and the weightiness feels just right to me. Will definitely be returning to this one soon.

Risk of Rain 2
After years of hemming and hawing about this game, I finally picked it up on its steep holiday discount. Only done a couple runs, but it’s neat! I find it can be tricky to play shooters with the Joycons sometimes, but the controls and gyro aiming assist feel good from the get go here. I only played a couple hours of the original, but it’s striking how faithfully the gameplay translates into a new dimension. Overwhelming in a good way (so far).

Collection of Mana
The Mana series is undoubtedly one of my biggest blind spots in JRPG history! So it felt good to pick this up at a discount and have a shot at rectifying that. Only a little bit into the first game so far, Final Fantasy Adventure. More interesting as a history lesson than a game, at least for now, but I’m not necessarily opposed to that for a while. Might move onto the Mana games proper before finishing it up.

The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles
At least one beloved series has finally got its historically set prequels localized abroad! (Sorry Yakuza). I’ve played this one the least so I don’t really have anything to say just yet. I have liked every Ace Attorney game I’ve played though, even the ones that don’t seem to track as well with fans, so I feel pretty confident. Looking forward to some nice winter evenings with a glass of red wine and some MURDER on the Switch.

Apparently a Survey in Japan has BOTW as number 1 game there.

I didn’t realize how much Japan is loving BOTW. I mean yeah it sold amazing over there, but I thought the other titles there would beat it. Like Dragon Quest, Final Fantasy or Splatoon

XVI is going to pull a XIII and go multi platform for sure. It’s just a question of Xbox or PS4 at launch. PS5 doesn’t have the numbers yet to support it as an exclusive.

I also wonder if XVI is probably the last FF that is a Sony launch exclusive. It’s not like these games are getting any cheaper to make and I imagine S-E would rather have a way to hedge their bets on platforms if they’re trying to get FF games to launch closer to the start of the generation again.

So far, i've got Saints Row IV and Ys Origins with these eShop deals. Thinking about buying Ys VIII as well, it's at a very good price and i've been wanting to try it for a while

This talk of Atlus maybe working on a new Etrian-game (I know they teased something as such in the past, but we haven't heard or seen anything ever since) really makes me happy. I love that series soooooooo much!

Ys VIII is so good. Near the end, I was fighting as Dana almost as much as I was using Adol.

Here's some good news, apparently from New Years Developers comments/goals for new year, Atlus said SMT team will release/announce a new game next year (something along those lines), so seeing the new EO could be a matter of time.

Same thing with Team Asano, it looks like they're teasing another new announcement for the next year, potentially Octopath 2.

Pix n Love finally getting ready to ship No More Heroes 3. If they post it tomorrow, I should have it by the weekend, all going well, so I doubt I'll get to complete NMH3 in 2021, though I might get to start it.

True, but still, Etrian feels so niche to me and in combination with its rather DS/3DS dual screen focussed map making gameplay I kind of thought that series would be buried by Atlus, like they did with the Trauma Center-series.

Tbf though, I haven't got the sales data of the Etrian-series to even say if killing the Etrian-series would make much sense.

Same, I got some old smelly cheese in a christmas gift game with the family and a aussie tourist bottle opener made out of Kangaroos scrotum :sneaky:

I just don’t think this particular challenge is fun or well-designed at all.
I think the E.M.M.I.s are a well-designed challenge, but I do think Mercury Steam are just not great at difficulty balancing in general. It's one of the reasons I find Metroid becoming a harder 2D sidescrolling series over the years a bit of a double-edged sword. On the one hand an already niche series like Metroid doesn't necessarily have much to lose from being made more difficult, and the fact that the 2D series has consistently controlled like a dream since Fusion back in 2002 (coincidentally also the game that made Metroid hard again) makes the challenge pretty fun. But on the other hand, Mercury Steam is just awful at balancing in a lot of ways, and the series was always more exploration-based before Fusion, so it kind of clashes with the design philosophy of the games. Not so coincidentally, pretty much all of the really challenging 2D games are more linear than Super or Zero Mission.

Not gonna spoil it, but there's times where normal enemies can take like an energy tank in a half, yet certain boss attacks take like 33 energy points. It's absolutely insane, lol.

I think the lighting is great, but I do think that Mercury Steam does something most Nintendo development partners don't really do: They use technology and graphical fidelity to overcome art design limitations, rather than using art design to overcome fidelity limitations. This is the exact opposite of what Nintendo normally does.

There's some really great art design in the game for sure, but a lot of areas are actually pretty flat, which isn't helped by Mercury Steam's weird fetish for cold, metallic locations ... something they've never really nailed down? I also can't help but think that the setting of the game was a bit poorly thought-out, aside from maybe one area of the game, I can't think of any portion of the game where it really sunk in to me that we are on a planet. Which is super bathling considering every other Metroid game that takes place on a planet really utilizes the concept to their advantage. This kind of goes hand-in-hand with the art design criticism, imo. Basically everything could just be done on a space station, just like Fusion, except for again that one area.

It kind of reminds me of Next Level Games with Luigi's Mansion 3, except the art direction for the environments is legitimately great, just the setting doesn't seem super cohesive and the enemies look really out of place.
I’ll say too that although the smooth framerate is great
loading-screens-chan has entered the chat room

Regardless, don't feel too bad about not liking things as much as other people, not every game can be for us unfortunately :) Hope you enjoy it in the end, though!

I certainly don't. Etrian games are notoriously veeery grindy. Monsters literally don't drop money as rewards and new party members start at level 1. 90% of the 60 hours of gameplay in each game is literal mindless grind. Hell even just to afford the rising inn prices you have to grind at least for half an hour.

We have more than enough grindy games on Switch, I'd rather have Atlus creating new grind-free ideas for games.

Is there already a "gaming related questions that don't really deserve their own thread"-thread? Because I have a gaming related question that don't reallly deserves its own thread lol.

It's about a game I played on the C64 but I'm very sure it's ported to other systems, maybe MSX or even NES. You're frog and you have to go up in a forest-like environment and you do that by pressing a button and holding it while a meter at the bottom of the screen fills up. The more it is filled and you release the button, the higher you jump.

I've no idea what else you do in that game but I've been searching for that game for like 25 years already.... So if anyone has any idea please let me know!

But the grind and the fleshing out of your character by doing the grind while exploring the labyrinth and smart management of your resources in order to outfit your crew the best way is like 95% of the appeal of that game lol. Sounds like that series isn't really your cup of tea haha :)

No they are "my cup of tea" but I have played a whopping 470 hours of Etrian odyssey on 3DS (even more if you include Persona Q games). I really have enough of them, I want something fresh. Switch is steadily getting enough grindy job based dungeon crawlers anyway, with he likes of Bravely Default and Octopath Traveler.

Also "management of resources" was never smart in any Etrian game. These are not the kind of dungeon crawlers where there are tons of interesting equipment or armor. No, the number one rule of the series is to mix-match the jobs to defeat FOEs and in order to do that, you need to grind the jobs required to beat the boss. I mean even the devs admitted in one interview, defined the Etrian series as "ultimate level grinding experience". That's not a bad thing but on 3DS alone we had 7 Etrian Odyssey games.

Oh yeah we had some Lupin fans(and anime and mecha fans) on here who might be interested in this deal

They exclusively have Lupin part 6. Got some other interesting stuff from a good sampling of mech stuff to some other odds and ends(like most of the Garo shows including the original. Our Toku guys should appreciate that one, it’s wild stuff)

Well, they sure have to come up with a new twist on the dual screen formula now, so who knows what they'll do with the series.

I've played all Etrian-games as well as the Persona Q and Untold-series too, so I know what you mean by there being a lot Etrian-games (even though I respectfully disagree, I need more lol :) ), but on the resources and grind that go with it, I loved it. I loved the management of resources in order to get certain types of equipment for the particular crew you're rocking with. To work towards that piece of gear and even get the resources from them from beasts in the later Etrian-games. Yeah, it wasn't sophisticated but it gets me hooked every time.

And yeah, levelling up new members from level one can be a pain, but if you grind it out in some higher level labyrinths you'll get their in no time.

But we'll see what Atlus will come up with. Etrian Nexus was already a goodbye to the DS/3DS-series, so I'm really curious what's next for the series.

Played like over 3 hours of Skyward Sword HD today. Having a blast with it. Might be because it's been so long since I've played a Zelda game (last was BOTW when it came out...on the Wii U) and never played Skyward Sword before. The music is really nice too.
It's really under-appreciated but I'm glad the Switch release has given it a lot more limelight. It has some of the best music, characters and dungeons. I'm really glad to hear you're digging it.

If you really want something like Etrian Odyssey, Switch has some high quality clones. Especially those from Experience.

Demon Gaze recently came out, very similar to Etrian Odyssey in many ways. A brutal job based dungeon crawler with a variety of dungeons.

Stranger of Sword City/Saviours of Sapphire Wings is also from Experience, another job based dungeon crawler. Still as brutal as Etrian series but at least doesn't have the questionable design choices of Etrian odyssey like Inn costs increase as you level up. And compared to Etrian series, there are more variety in envrionment. Etrian odyssey series always reuse the dungeon themes, every game start with green forest one.

10 hours in, on the third dungeon now. And yeah, I'm in love with it. The dungeons, characters and bosses are really damn good. Great music too, especially like the Lanayru region music so far. Love that industrial/synth sound and the way it keeps changing with the way the time mechanic works.

Yeah, that survey is really interesting. To see Zelda become so prevalent and dominant after all this time is, well.... wild.

Also for anyone curious, these were the 7 games that originated outside of Japan that resonated with enough gamers there to make the top 100:

66. Ghost of Tsushima
59. Dead by Daylight
57. Donkey Kong Country
30. Apex Legends
25. Tetris
20. Minecraft
13. UNDERTALE

Konami's dead series Metal Gear and Suikoden both made the list twice:

79. Metal Gear Solid
65. Suikoden
19. Suikoden II
18. Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater

Japanese gamers are really sleeping on GOATs Mario Odyssey and Mario Kart 8:

97. Super Mario World
89. Super Mario Galaxy 2
77. Mario Kart Wii
71. Dr. Mario
69. Super Mario RPG
56. Super Mario Galaxy
12. Super Mario Kart
10. Super Mario Bros. 3

Fun stuff overall.

I dabbled a bit in Demon Gaze but haven't played all that much yet. But I looked up Stranger of Sword City and man, that looks really like something I'm looking for! Thanks for the recommendations! :)

Edit: I just was like "man, go for it" and ordered the physical edition of Stranger of Sword City/Saviours of Sapphire Wings. Look forward to it!

This sounds very James Pond-esque to me. Just with jumping instead of stretching
No, it's really not James Pond. It's really vertical based, where you have to go up. The jumping mechanic is key in that game. As an Amiga-enthusiast I really appreciate James Pond though!

As exciting as 2022 will be, I'm going to have a hard time enjoying them until I get that DK announcement. I remember during the Wii days I couldn't really appreciate games like Galaxy or Zelda because how in the dark the series was at the time. Seemed like all of Nintendo's big hitters were getting new mainline games left and right while DK was left in the dust. The situation here is even worse since this is the longest the series has been without a new game, even the 2000s had something despite the majority of the titles lacking in quality.

I might skip some of the titles next year until then. Not to make a statement or protest (lol), but because I don't want to sully my experience with them. I know, I'm weird.
I don't think that's too odd! I know what you mean. For me Kirby is the only announced game of interest beyond BOTW 2 so I'm just kinda waiting for stuff like DK, 2D Mario, 3D Mario, experimental Kirby, Pushmo, etc. I really hope and think we may well get DK and/or 2D Mario this year.

I can't lie and say that it doesn't really suck to me that Nintendo games won't be able to technically progress beyond the 7th generation for a while longer
I mean, technically they already have.
7th gen is the PS3/360, Switch is beyond that both in the quality of its graphics and the kind of games it gets.
You wouldn't see stuff like Witcher 3, Dying Light, Luigi's Mansion 3, etc on 7th gen hardware.

Switch may not be a 4K powerhouse, but it has a GPU a decade more modern than PS3/360's in terms of features and 6 times as much usable RAM.

Regardless, don't feel too bad about not liking things as much as other people, not every game can be for us unfortunately :) Hope you enjoy it in the end, though!
Oh, I don’t feel bad about that at all! After spending the evening with Dread, though, I feel a little bad for my wallet. I absolutely cannot stand this game lmao

Hmmmm....this is a tempting offer. HDive doesn't have a whole lot of new stuff that I'm super interested in but it does have a nice backlog of shows that are not on other streaming services. I think I'll probably bite.

Why should I be wringing my hands over big budget SE games skipping Switch when we are getting all those superior Asano games.
Agreed, I'm far more excited for Triangle Strategy, the next SaGa, and whatever remasters SE has cooking up then FFXVI and Forspoken.
Hoooo boy, that Famitsu thread with the prediction of PS5 software for 2022 on Era is something to behold...😬
I know you mean well, but we really need to stop bringing that place up here. This community separated from there for a reason and we should just leave it behind and focus on fostering our new pad without the toxicity of the old. It's been obvious that without the influence of this community all Nintendo-related discussion at the old place just become dens for snark and console warring and if I could I would tell the few that try to keep a balance over there that it's a lost cause and they should abandon ship. Let that place become the Playstation-focused forum it was meant to be and we'll make this the best Nintendo-focused one it can be (with some non-toxic discussion of other platforms as well).
This talk of Atlus maybe working on a new Etrian-game (I know they teased something as such in the past, but we haven't heard or seen anything ever since) really makes me happy. I love that series soooooooo much!
I also hope we get more news on that new Etrian Odyssey game Atlus teased about years back now that SMTV is complete. Sure there are several dungeon crawlers on the Switch, but none of them have quite scratched that itch like Etrian Odyssey.

Alright, I played Halo Infinite and switched from quality mode to performance mode and it's like day and night. I had never noticed such a difference before, who is playing that game at 30fps ??

How is it you can spend hours failing to beat a boss, then when you put the game down for 24 hours and try again the next day you beat it like no one’s business in 10 minutes?
I've had this happen a bunch and I think it's akin to beginner's luck. I like to think of beginner's luck as really being beginner's skill. When you're fresh at something you operate on instinct more and are less likely to second-guess or overthink. That's my theory at least. 🙂
