I really need to get back into video games lol, especially with how much I've been enjoying Halo Infinite. I need to complete the first leg of that new Winter event before next Tuesday.

I've just been consumed by movies lately. Still have to see Coda, Nightmare Alley, Don't Look Up, Licorice Pizza, Matrix Resurrections, Red Rocket, and The Tragedy of Macbeth before the end of the year, ideally. Then I finally plan on catching up on my huge physical Blu-ray/4K backlog of movies I blindly bought

Summer, it's gonna be a spiritual successor to Mario Sunshine ☀️ 😎

I mean, after all, Isle Delfino was on the Odyssey world map despite not appearing in the actual game. Makes perfect sense to me 👀

This actually convinced me of its possibility. I wouldn't necessarily call it a "sequel" to Sunshine... more like it'll be Super Mario Odyssey 2, and be

(1) a sequel to Odyssey in that capturing enemies will still be the central mechanic (which solves one of Sunshine's major issues of place-based nozzle-switching being the core mechanic),

(2) a spiritual successor to Sunshine in that it'll be island/tropical themed, away from the Mushroom Kingdom setting, etc., but not necessarily just on Isle Delfino (maybe a chain of islands near it),

and if that's the case, (3) "open world" like Bowser's Fury, which certainly seems like it would be a nice test run for a concept here, maybe there would be 7-10 or so "world/sections" on par with all of Lake Lapcat, and there would be a Plessie type of traversal between them.

Mid-summer would be a good time if BOTW 2 is Oct/Nov and Splatoon 3 is May, but that would throw a wrench if Splatoon is more meant to be summer.

I finished Halo Infinite last night, which makes 44 games/expansions cleared this year. Not sure what's next. Still waiting on Pix n Love to ship No More Heroes 3 - apparently the edition I ordered should start shipping in the next few days. I'd be surprised if it arrives in time for me to finish it before the end of 2021, which is kinda funny/sad, in that NMH3 was one of my most anticipated games going into 2021 and who knows if I'll actually play it this year.

I've got The Last Campfire on Switch, which I think I'll play because it should be relaxing. Got plenty I could play with GamePass, but nothing grabbing me right now, though Psychonauts 2 is probably next on Series S for me, as well as more Halo. I'm definitely going to be doing a little eShop splurge soon - Death's Door, Yooka Laylee and the Impossible Lair, Eastward, KOTOR and Chicory high up on the list of wants.

Do you have Loop Hero? I think that is a perfect bridge game as you can just stop and return to it whenever you please!

AH, thanks. I checked every regional twitter except Aus. Which is actually very uncharacteristic of me. 😅

Boring time for news.

Only interesting things happening now are sales reports and milestones.

They also showed the same area in a guide they posted a little bit ago 💀

I don't even recall this area in my playthrough, but I assume the scanner was not available yet right, so it could be useful for first-timers. I didn't get absolutely stuck like I was several times on Super Metroid, but I guess playing Super before Dread probably helped

this is in the very beginning of the game. this area is meant to teach you to shoot suspicious areas, though it does it by making you miss

I've played every 2D Metroid except of the og and I was stuck in that area. It's very random an unintuitive for being the main path and being so early oin the game.

Tempted to get this, but I hear its extremely repetitive and has mediocre dungeon exploration

Definitely one of those can we skip the gameplay and get back to the story type of games. I don' think you get any new moves really until the end of the first game.

I disliked this game and thought it was silly and cringy when I was a teenager, I can't imagine what I would think of it now.

I finished Adventure of Link for the first time yesterday! The game is doable so long as you have a map pulled up on your computer and cheat the experience system a bit by saving the actual collection of each palace gem until the very end for quick level-ups to max levels. Enemies all have patterns so they're not too bad once you figure them out. Exceptions are those blue Darknuts that shoot sword beams and those floating ghosts. Screw those things.

Save states and rewind also helps lol. Although I refrained myself from using them too much, only before especially bullshit areas like Death Mountain and the path to the Great Palace.

I'd be down with a HD-2D remake of this game.

Bravely Default 2 was a flop --> Actually sold really well and franchise is continuing
Disgaea 6 was a flop --> One of the best selling in the franchise

Shin Megami Tensei V is next on the "Wow, can't believe it flopped so bad on Switch" list.
This is why I rarely took gaming predictions on NeoGAF/Resetera seriously. Hopefully we'll have a better, more level-headed view here.

Speaking of Disgaea 6, it was my youngest cousin's first SRPG and he loved it; Now he's looking forward to Triangle Strategy.
Asano stans dabbing on TWEWY stans right now.

As a fan of both TWEWY and Team Asano games this burns. SE should have given Nintendo publishing rights for the Switch version that way it would have had better marketing and a chance at success.

Also, I want to say I really enjoyed seeing this conversation about books pop up organically in this thread. It's a great topic and, even though I've been majorly slacking about reading lately, I'm always glad to see it discussed.

I just figured I'd mention that there actually is a thread dedicated to books and the reading thereof over in The Roost, which would gladly accept discussion if you ever felt like talking about or asking about books.

Not to take away from what happened here, of course.

(Also, it sounds like there was probably more going on there, but I find Gatsby seems to be taught primarily as a vessel to teach literary devices; it's just unfortunate how often this can lead to people disliking it, and reading in general, when they otherwise might have found enjoyment in the process)
You know, I've been meaning to pop in that thread as well, but I think it's a hint of feeling like a fraud when I haven't read much 😅 That is my own hangups though, and I will make my way over soon.

You're not wrong in else going on (after I graduated and went back for my sister's grad ceremony some three years later, walked past her and she gave me stinkeye. Get rekt, Ms. Nelson 👆), but I think that having read it first, appreciating it for what it is, and now able to go back and pick up on these little bits of foreshadowing and similies and imagery really have me in awe of what Fitzgerald was able to accomplish (also still gives me some chills that over the course of this three month whirlwind, Nick Carraway turns 30 at the end of that summer, and that just hit me particularly hard in the chapter it's revealed haha)

I think Disgaea 6 is by far the best entry for a newcomer to the series. I'm excited for the new NIS SPRG they announced at TGS.

every JRPG is a flop because I personally do not like them

The only good JRPGs are Paper Mario: TTYD, Pokémon Gold/Silver and Golden Sun 1&2.

Looking forward to that Shin Megami Tensei V has shipped 1 million PR from Atlus sometime next year.

Happy that Asano keeps winning. Maybe eventually Square Enix will let him have a higher budget to work with since Team Asano is consistent.
It’s kinda neat how many of Square’s smaller budget titles tend to be the ones that do best. Neo TWEWY not withstanding.

I wonder how Dungeon Encounters fared?

I tend to skip RPGs in general, J or not

I do like Pokémon, Earthbound and Shin Megami Tensei though, dunno if it's just because of the aesthetics (RPGs tend to have a medieval fantasy setting for some reason) or if theirs mechanics just looked more interesting to me in a way that others didn't. Maybe a bit of both.

FF9 Remake ;) yes, I believe

I believe in Asano aceing a FF9 remake. I hope they give us more Freya and Beatrix. Amarant(h) is essentially a foil for Zidane and like a lot of 1990s edgy JRPG protagonists.
they're gonna try to give him Tokyo RPG Factory money next

I liked I Am Setsuna and Lost Sphear so that's not bad at all. (I felt Setsuna was the better game. Sphear felt a little bloated)

I really hope we see this and the Yggdra Union port in the west. The Dept Heaven games are the only reason my Vita isn't in storage since the Switch has remasters of Square Enixs PS1 titles, the Danganronpa series, and now Vanillaware is on board. Sure, the Vita still has access to almost the entire Persona series, but the Switch has SMTIII and SMTV which more than makes up for their absence in my opinion.

And what about something a la Sonic Generations? With a mix between 3D and 2D platformer to celebrate Mario and Donkey history and the movie. Would be a dream project to me.

Make sense to bring Donkey into the Mario universe if they want to maximize the potential of the IP imo
If it's a proper continuation of the Mario vs. Donkey Kong series then I guess I wouldn't mind.

But I disagree it would maximize the potential of the IP. People still treat DK as a Mario character which devalues the brand imo. They don't respect the fact DK is it's own core IP. Having consistent solo releases and a 3D sub series like Zelda, Metroid, and Mario should be the way. And then after that has been established, an epic crossover with Mario and DK (with Bowser and K. Rool joining forces) will feel appropriate.

I don't mind the occasional appearances in Mario spinoffs or Easter eggs, but I think they should keep the games mostly separate. Like, I much rather explore DK's world with DK and friends than with Mario in a 3D setting.

Probably not super well, at least I've heard very little buzz about it (although some from a few people!) but at the same time that game looks to have an even tinier budget than most, so it may not have needed much at all to do decently

I want to add to what Nathan said; I do prefer DK and Mario being each their own thing, and the more apart the merrier.

No problem DK, Diddy and others coming over to sports games and go-karting, but seriously... keep them separated when comes to platformers.
