Well bit on black and starfighter for this week. Wanted the latter as some comfort food XD

Was curious so grouped together all my OG Xbox games. I have 360 the most of any platform tho

IMG_8527.jpg

Unless it's something I have zero interest in I usually grab any that go on sale in the Xbox category. Wish it was easier to filter on the shop tho

No Mercenaries: Playground Of Destruction?
I have it physically, just haven’t gotten around to rebuying everything. In fact now that I’m stable again I’m trying to pick up what I’m interested/love again. Maybe 2-3 every other week or so. For rebuys:
Jedi Star Fighter, SW Ep3, SW TCW, Mercs, and Blinx(maybe crimson skies but I can wait for the super cheap sale again)
For ones I’m just interested in:
Otogi 1/2, Gladius, secrets over normandy, SSX3… actually that’s it? Armed and dangerous got delisted before I could grab it, and I’m not big on shooters so only other thing I have any vague interest in is red dead revolver, but not that much?
Huh, I guess it won’t take me long to grab the rest I’m interested in if I keep chipping

Rumors of a Indie Direct makes no sense, considering that several games at the last direct are from independent studios and heck one of them, Another Crab’s Treasure, was first announced at an Indie Direct
Shantae Advance has yet to be dated, Freedom Planet 2 could get a release trailer.. plenty of games could pop up in a coming Indie World

…I think they switched my meds again

There are always more indies. There are more indies now than ever. No reason they can’t show them off in an Indie World

Knocked out the first 5 missions of Starwars Starfighter(all 3 missions cleared too, albeit on easy). Man the nostaglia. Still so good and clean. Time for a kit break tho.

I never finished Pokémon Legends Arceus, and since it’s been a while I’m just starting over. This game really does have a great vibe.

Thinking about giving it another run myself sometime this year. Definitely gonna have to beat Sword for the millionth time first though.

I don't know if I was just blind before or what, but on Nintendo's investor relations site I found the links to the archived quarterly releases and other announcements. In previous times I tried finding what I could on archive.org but had huge gaps. The English one goes back to FY2000, and Japanese has some stuff as far back as FY1997.

Randomly picking one to stick through machine translation, I saw something pretty interesting. Nintendo always considers GB+GBC to be of the same family, and so generally the shipment numbers have been combined. So we knew that through March 1999, about a half year after GBC released, Game Boy's Japanese shipments were ~23.96 million. But this announcement specifically breaks it down into 20.84m grayscale and 3.10m Color, which is at least to me a new data point. Probably not enough other statements like this across time/regions to totally separate GB and GBC, but I'm curious what else is in there.

EDIT: Also worth noting, this information was in a release about the GBC dropping price from 8900 yen to 6800 yen. With a drop like that so soon after launch, you'd think it was the 3DS.
I found a pre built computer I have my eye on. I want y'all's opinions on the specs

AMD Ryzen 5 7600 - 16GB Memory - NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060

My current one I had custom built for a few grand in late '22, and that seems like it would run most games better than mine. CPU benchmarks about 20% better. GPU very similar except you'd have access to DLSS FG. I'm pretty happy with what I can do with mine, but I also spend more time playing older releases at crazy frame rates/resolutions than games that really push the limits. Starfield probably the heaviest I've spent much time in, with frame rates usually in the 40-70 range while using FSR or DLSS to go from 1080p->4K. At least, that's what it was before FSR FG became an option, and I've barely tested that out.

I’m going to make a hot take:
Crash 4 is way worse than DK64
It even takes the crown of worst collectathon/platformer to 100%. The game legitimately makes itself less fun to play the further in you get just to beat it, not to mention 100% it. DK64 just has a couple design flaws, crash 4 is actively hostile against the player

I don’t know if I’m like fundamentally broken or some shit but I didn’t have this problem with it.

I also didn’t try to 100% because 100%ing anything is usually annoying to me.

It felt in sync with previous entries, almost easier in some spots, though harder in others, while having a lot of intense extra challenges for older fans and people who wanted to like, idk, stream difficult challenges or something

I found a very nice pre built I have my eye on with this set up.

It can run spider man at 1080p max, ray tracing at around 100 fps with dlss. I’m very much impressed with it. This will be my first computer other than my steam deck. It will be a while before I can get it though.

LMAO I FINALLY STARTED SIDE ORDER

so I can go back to last month’s thread and read all the spoilers you tagged me in

but uh seeing the UNITY interface in Splatoon 3 was NOT something I was emotionally prepared for today

losing it, loving it

crash 4 is actively hostile against the player
Crash Bandicoot was always like that, so that's not new. Although the way people constantly harp on it either tells me that everyone has a very rose-tinted view of the old games due to already knowing all their dirty tricks, or Crash 4 is actually that much worse. I haven't ever been encouraged to play it by the impressions I've read, that's for sure.

Although I think DK64 was never really the worst game to 100% either. It has its fair share of infamously bad parts, but on the whole it's more without merit than it is actively terrible. I would rather 100% DK64 again than Crash 1 again, though I'd really rather not replay either of them. The real answer is probably like I Wanna Be the Guy or something though.

I also didn’t try to 100% because 100%ing anything is usually annoying to me.
I think if you don't 100% Crash 4, yeah, difficult and length aren't so bad. It's "harder" but in a game where you have unlimited lives, lots of communication of mechanics and movement (like that new drop shadow), and little tricks to help the player (I think of the coyote time you get when you slide off of a platform).

If you do go for 100%? Hoo boy.

Although the way people constantly harp on it either tells me that everyone has a very rose-tinted view of the old games due to already knowing all their dirty tricks, or Crash 4 is actually that much worse.
Let's run down some of Crash 4's tweaks.

Level length? Doubled. More meat for a casual run but makes going through to complete a level a lot more painful.

Box placement? Put in trickier spots, making finding all of them in a long level that you will need to replay if you didn't find it much worse.

New collectibles? Gems for not dying enough times, sure. Hidden gems in the level, whatever. How about relics you get for perfect clearing a stage in a single life? With these longer level lengths, increased challenge, and harder to find boxes? Good luck!

N-Verted stages? Have fun playing through each level an additional time at minimum.

Bonus stages with the new characters? You gotta replay a segment of the main levels at the end, making things more repetitive.

Time Trials? Not only is the previous top time level now the second best, but the new triple spin is a lot harder to pull off than the run button of Crash 3.

None of these are problems in a non 100% play. If anything some or them are benefits - meatier levels, more Bonus content, all of that. But Crash 4 100% is a very demanding game, one that feels like a bummer because, even with some pretty cryptic secrets at points, Crash 2 and 3 were not this bad at all! At the least, they are much shorter and more manageable 100% runs compared to what Crash 4 asks of you.

Dammit I wish they sold Side Order separately like they did with XB2 Torna. I really wanna play it but am not ready to commit to buying the full game yet 😅

Oh my gosh, seeing that slayed me. Marina is just like me, for real!!!

We need to talk about Side Order once you finish it, there is a lot of spoiler material to pour over.

I could barely credits clear Crash 4, and I completed the trilogy(didn’t 100% mind you), and I’m someone who 100% SMBW! Crash 4 is like someone deciding to mix 2 of the hardest levels of the original trilogy levels with completely different flows into one level for 3 worlds straight. I felt betrayed on the alt character playthrough levels because they made you replay the main level it was the background of again. You could split every crash 4 level in half and it would be way better for it.

The original crash games kept a level’s tricks and flow uniform at least. You can get the rhythm for it.

Edit: also no rose colored glasses here, never beat the trilogy or played all of them till the switch port of the remaster

that’ll be like, maybe a year

the truth is that I’m not especially good at Splatoon, I just like it

Hey, I'll wait! I can be patient when I want to be.

I will say that, compared to some other roguelikes/lites, this one wasn't so bad? Like, rolling credits means just finishing one run, this isn't a Hades kinda deal. Buy some hacks for lives and attack/defense buffs, and it'll go a lot easier, I think.
I need to get into splatoon more. It took me a while to get good internet to finally play it. Maybe some this evening.

I am down an online with crash team rrumble.
If you haven't already finished the single player, it's very much worth it!

I cannot imagine how loud the Hulbury Gym is in-game with the millions of gallons of water pouring through the pipes every second. Plus how unsafe it is with no guard rails to prevent you from falling into the water.

I might consider the campaign whenever I’m done with ff7 rebirth.

that looks pretty similar to the pre-built I bought late last year (memory's the same, my GPU is a 4060 TI; the CPU's different but I think the one you're looking at is a bit better than mine)

Should note I'm playing in 1080p and generally using DLSS when it's available, but so far I can say anything I've thrown at it has had no problem hitting at least a locked 60fps with all or most of the visuals set as high as they'll go. I think the newest/most demanding game I've played on it so far was Spider-Man, and that ran great pretty much my entire playthrough (there were one or two weird isolated moments where it had huge slowdown in a fight, but it wasn't a frequent or persistent thing; might have been because I tabbed out of the game for a second)

A 1080p monitor is what I’m aiming for as well after seeing all the results from different gaming tests on YouTube. I’m sold on this set up, now I gotta save a little

I did see spider man on one video and I was impressed by it. I do hope to try some older stuff too. And games like killer instinct.

FWIW, when I first got this PC I was still using a 1080p60 3D TV, and it felt hard to NOT max things out. Most games it would reach 1080p60 with one hand tied behind its back. Since then I've upgraded to a 4K120, and I can once again run into limits.

Wait so Splatoon 3’s got a more solid single player? I liked the originals but didn’t care for the multi so I never messed with the sequels
Yeah it’s quite a bit better in Splatoon 3. A lot of the levels are more complex, some have multiple difficulty levels like in the Splatoon 2 Octo Expansion, and the final set of levels take you through a proper location and has a dramatic final boss. There’s even a Mario-like extra hard post game level.

Not a bad idea to get a 4k one, at least for more older games. Still, I have time to decide on a monitor I want.

Here's my takes on each Splatoon single player mode after 1:
  • Splatoon 2 Octo Canyon: Very similar to Splatoon's Octo Valley, arguably feels a bit "second verse, same as the first" but is still good. You use more weapons than the standard shooter, adding more variety on a per-level basis. The Sunken Scrolls have less interesting lore and the final boss isn't as good as Splatoon's really strong one. Potentially lots of replay value if you want to beat every level with your weapons of choice.
  • Splatoon 2 Octo Expansion: DLC. Shorter, more challenging levels and more limited main/sub weapon options per level. Arguably the best story out of all of the campaigns, with lots of great moments and a killer final stretch. Super difficult bonus boss if you finish every level.
  • Splatoon 3 Return of the Mammalians: This is to Octo Expansion as Octo Canyon is to Octo Valley. It's more approachable than its inspiration and may not reach its same highs (YMMV), but it once again has a really strong final stretch. Super difficult final level if you finish every level.
  • Splatoon 3 Side Order: DLC. It's a roguelite mode! The story mode that tests your multiplayer fundamentals the most with its arena based set up. Unlike the other campaigns, this one has a full set of new enemies/bosses! Not gonna give you the same storytelling highs as OE but I actually really vibe with this one, hits harder after OE though.
I think Splatoon 3's pairing of RotM and Side Order is the strongest set overall, but Octo Expansion may be the single best? I feel like I need to try OE again since Splatoon 3 is fresher in my mind. All are worth trying but I understand not wanting to pay full price for a multiplayer game for these campaigns.

Y’all convinced me to play splatoon over final fantasy this evening

i never actually beat Octo Expansion, so I should do that. seems like there’s some lore in there that would be a nice garnish for Sider Order

I forget when I got Splatoon but I think it may have been after the Switch and Splatoon 2 released. Originally wanted to try couch multiplayer before I realized that wasn’t really a thing.

So — most of my Splatoon time was single-player. and I enjoyed it a ton! with some tasty multiplayer garnish so I could buy knock off Doc Martens. Unless those weren’t there until 2?

all this to say I’m a weird outlier who plays them mostly for single player with some casual matches in between, almost always exclusively so I can get fashion that semi-suits me
