Pre-Release Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door (2024) — Pre-release Discussion Thread

Considering that one character from Super Mario RPG who holds a martini originally was actually corrected to hold a margarita, I think the alcohol isokay.

Just wondering if the Boo in the casino will still be wearing bunny ears.
tumblr_oua2yfqoLg1rrftcdo1_500.gif
But still not sure if the Casino will stay. There was no real gambling in it, was it? Too long ago to remember it. Because PEGI doesn't mention gambling in their description I think.

I'm guessing that, whatever the content looks like, it will be the same between the Japanese and international versions. When Tokyo Mirage Sessions was ported to Switch, the international version content was used in all territories, and Nintendo stated this was to facilitate a simultaneous worldwide release.

There's actually two of these Boos, and the one in the gif is in a shop, not a casino.

The casino slot machines were actual gambling, I think?

How are we feeling about the likelihood of these things being kept or cut:

-Hooktail’s infamous feet dialogue
-Princess Peach being undressed (shower and invisible segments - I’m betting they just make her outfit turn invisible with her this time)
-Pianta Parlor (perhaps cut slot machines but some can be retained?)
-White outline in the bandit’s House (certainly expect the blood to be gone at least)

Seeing the noose retained was a good sign, but I have my doubts this release will escape censorship 100%. Just hoping for something as close as possible.

the white body outline was already cut in the English version so doubt that makes it.

I think everything else makes it fine besides the slot machines due to EU regulations

yeah the Japanese players were pissed they got the censored version for TMS iirc. they wanted their vagina bones

The slot machines will be changed to the Mario 3 matching game but nothing else will be different

The remade ost for the Peach and TEC segment is so different and (imo) fantastic. I can’t wait to listen to more of those tracks. Also feel like the original track for the final boss could’ve been done better so here’s hoping.

Hopefully they don’t change Hooktail’s dialogue
Yeah I can’t really see why lol. It’s supposed to elicit an “eww gross, stinky feet!” reaction from little kids, they don’t know about anything more than that lol

From my memories of playing the game as a kid, the weird horny thing that was really noticeable even back then was Flurrie's jiggle physics. I didn't know why it felt so weird at the time, but I definitely took notice of it.

Most of the other stuff was looking back at the game years later and going "oh, there's a pattern here", but that one is kind of blatant.

Looking at her brief appearances in the trailer, they may have actually removed it?

-Hooktail’s infamous feet dialogue
-Princess Peach being undressed (shower and invisible segments - I’m betting they just make her outfit turn invisible with her this time)
I honestly expect both of these to stay. No one ever actually sees Peach undress, TEC included. I wouldn't be shocked to see them rewritten - it is weird for Princess Peach to have dialogue acknowledging the fact that she's reluctantly removing her clothes in an officially licensed Nintendo game - but atm I expect it to stay as is. While the game has a pattern of making sexual jokes, they manage to walk the line here by not having TEC react to it at all. IMO it only feels strange because it's Peach and Nintendo, not because the content of it is at all problematic.

I am curious to see how they handle Peach's shadow in that segment. It's how the player tracked her in the original game, but the shadows are accurate to the models now instead of the circle blobs from before. My guess would be removing the shadow entirely and having some sort of effect as she walks, but who knows.

-Pianta Parlor (perhaps cut slot machines but some can be retained?)
The rest were all purely games of skill, the slots are the only issue with current regulations.
-White outline in the bandit’s House (certainly expect the blood to be gone at least)
This is an interesting one. It's already cut internationally, but curiously we've seen some things reverted to the Japanese release. I couldn't say either way; I don't think it's that out of line with the rest of the game personally, but I suppose I might not be in the majority there.

TEC's eye is red again and the logo is fashioned more like the JP version, so maybe they'll reconcile other benign versions differences as well.

I wonder if the content that was censored internationally will now also be censored in the JP version, like the toad murder scene or bobbery's wine?
Honestly I dug the M&L tie-in the localization had with 'Chuckola Cola' so I'd be fine with that change staying in.

I believe the Australian ratings for TTYD Switch release have confirmed "depictions of gambling". I will have to check myself...

As somebody who watched stuff like Detective Conan (or Cas Closed for Americans) as kid because it was part of the tv program in afternoon here in Germany I never understand the issue with a crime scene/white outlines and why it has to be censored. It's not like they show an explicit murder or something.

Would this be a good thing at a chance of it remaining somehow?

Good to hear some thoughts from others about the potentially "problematic" content. I was so stoked when this was first announced, but lately I keep worrying about all the things they might cut out. The wild, envelope-pushing details this game had are such a huge part of its identity, and so unlike the Nintendo of today. Just can't help but think they're going to sanitize and remove the fun stuff that gave it extra edge and charm. Makes the wait all the harder to see how much they either keep intact or ruin XP

The CERO rating for the TTYD remake is a B (ages 12 and up), which is higher than the original's A (and every other Paper Mario game).
The PEGI rating is now a 7 which now matches The Origami King as the highest age rated Paper Mario, up from the original's 3.
The ESRB rating remains an E like the original.

The pianta Parlor had gambling elements for sure:

The gambling machines actually worked!

To play a slot machine, Mario must deposit one pianta token. The slots will then spin. If Mario matches three of a kind, he will get more pianta tokens. Three Don Piantas give him three pianta tokens; three Stars give him fifteen pianta tokens, and three 7s gives him one hundred pianta tokens. The chance of matching three pianta tokens when rolling randomly is 15.625%; matching three Stars is 3.516%; matching three 7s is .195%. Despite these odds, a player playing randomly will still win an average of approximately 120 pianta tokens across 100 plays (meaning they will profit 20 pianta tokens as it costs 1 pianta token to play each time)

Among slot machines there were 4 minigames based on all the Paper Powers, they did not contain any gambling elements.

The Plane Game
The Special Card is needed to play this game. In the Plane Game, Mario must fly down from a high platform and try to get as far as possible. The farther Mario goes, the more pianta tokens he will win. There are also several spots to multiply the amount won, but there are also spots that subtract the number of pianta tokens Mario will receive. Some pianta tokens float in random spots in the air.

The Paper Game
The player must have the Silver Card to play this game. In the Paper Game, Mario and a massive crowd of different species must race towards a finish line. Mario is not timed, but he still needs to get in first to the finish line. Large fans blow against Mario and the crowd, and if Mario is not careful the wind can push him into a pit. This causes him to "retire" and forfeit any pianta tokens he might have earned, but if he turns paper-thin, the air will just pass by. However, moving in Paper Mode makes him run slower. Luigi, Koopie Koo, and Wonky have a cameo appearance in the race, and there is a chance for all opponents to be pink Bob-ombs. If the player comes in first place, they will get 20 tokens (earning ten tokens as it costs ten tokens to play).

Smart-Select-20230924-122910-Chrome.jpg

The Tube Game
The player must have the Gold Card to play this game. In the Tube Game, Mario is in tube form and has to move as fast as possible around barriers and obstacles on a track with no rails to get to the finish. Turning is a problem and since there are no rails, it is easy to fall off and lose precious time. Pianta tokens are scattered through this stage. A technical bonus is given if Mario does not fall off the stage.

Smart-Select-20230924-122921-Chrome.jpg

The Boat Game
The player needs a Platinum Card to play this game. In the Boat Game, Mario is in boat mode and he must sail between floating barrels and whirlpools to make it to the finish. There are also pianta tokens scattered through the stage. He is timed and this game can be considered difficult. A technical bonus is given if Mario does not hit any whirlpools.

It might be possible they just removed the slot machine functionality?

I mean there's already signs that that most likely won't be the case. The real interest thing is how they're gonna handle Vivian. That's the part I really wanna see.

it wouldn't surprise me if they kept the original english translation, or if they changed the original Japanese text to rewrite all the dialog. the original japanese dialog isn't some great wholesome plot about a trans character that got erased in the localization, it's pretty typical mid-2000s anime humor around dumb tropes
"Vivian's gender identity is inconsistent between different language translations. In the Japanese version, Vivian identifies and presents as female, but is described as actually being an effeminate-looking boy, aligning with common media depictions of transgender characters at the time while not explicitly referring to her as such. The French and Spanish versions directly carry this over, with the former additionally describing her as a boy pretending to be a girl.

The Italian version, meanwhile, explicitly describes Vivian as a trans girl; the localization additionally reconfigures her relationship with her gender identity and with her sisters, depicting Vivian as being openly proud of her identity and transition, with Marilyn and Bedlam's bullying of her being rooted in jealousy, traits which are absent in the Japanese script. The English and German versions remove any references to being transgender or gender nonconforming, implicitly portraying Vivian as a cisgender girl; instead of being bullied over her biological sex, her sisters instead belittle her for her appearance

I wonder how Happy Lucky Lottery will be handled...

...especially if you cheat.
I hope it just fixes the glitch where you couldn't actually win the grand prize unless you played like 10 years in a row every day consecutively lmao

I think all of these will probably be retained, maybe they'll have the camera cut away from the shower or something but I have a feeling the TEC sections will be mostly unchanged.
Honestly the most censorship we'll get is probably some minor dialogue changes, I think it's pretty safe to say that Goombella calling Ms Mowz "the biggest floozy ever" in Glitzville will probably be changed.

The TTYD remake already had an ESRB rating on the original trailer. There's nothing really new about this

I am surprised it's somehow still rated E. I had a headcannon that original game played some part in willing E10+ into existence given how the timeline works out, but who knows.

Wasn’t that the case most recently with Xenoblade Chronicles 3? Pretty sure they moved it up a few months to fill a gap in the schedule. Nintendo studios are crazy efficient to be able to have a game of that magnitude finished months ahead of time.
I wonder how many games Nintendo does this with because it speaks volumes about them. They have games just sitting and they’re in no rush to get them out the door. Who else is capable of doing this?? It’s ridiculous how good Nintendo is lol

Since this is supposedly a more from-the-ground-up remake (?), do we think this will have some new content in it at all?
The new NPC has already been mentioned, but I'm gonna guess that the PM64 partner cameos won't go mostly unused. Maybe they'll even be secretly recruitable like Ms Mowz, I think that'd be fun.

They’ll probably add more cameos, but I doubt we’ll see unlockable, 64 Partners. Granted, it’d be awesome!

Seeing Mario RPG remake reverting some localizations from the SNES version, I hope the same happens with TTYD.

Last I played TTYD it was with a fan hack that reverted a ton of unnecessary script changes and censorships, as well as just oversights, and I realized that there were more of these than I initially thought, and sometimes it noticeably made the game worse and confusing, like some plot points make less sense with how the game is currently translated.

They should censor as little as possible and keep it as close as they can to the original Japanese script this time around.

Will this game be part of the voucher program? I received eShop credit over the holidays and my birthday and I’d like to get some vouchers for this and possibly Another Code: Recollection.

I’m not sure how long it takes games to show up as part of the eligible titles for vouchers.

Of course 😀

It will show up once it is dated I believe, but don’t quote me on that.

Every Nintendo-published game that's $50 or more is eligible, I think.

It'll probably be added to the eligible games list once it gets dated and goes up for pre-order
