Time for the update to the NSO timeline, which I had actually done a few days ago and then proceeded to forget to post:

I do find it interesting just how long it took Devil World and Murasame Castle to come to NSO, especially given both made it to VC before hand - and they even made a big song and dance of Murasame coming westwards on 3DS VC for the first time. Although, fun fact - this is the first time Devil World is officially playable in North America.

Still a few weird NES/FC hold outs that by all metrics should be on NSO by now - shown as the top row of this image of all Nintendo first party titles for NES not on NSO:

Popeye enter the public domain on January 1st 2025 in the US. He's been public domain in Europe and Canada for years. I don't know if the game has any later characters or things that would complicqte it but I can see that eventually come.

Nes tetris will come eventually since that have gameboy tetris.

Mike Tysons punchout is gone forever.

I looked up about Popeye and apparently it's weird and a part may be public domain but not the IP, it's weird and couldn't find a straight answer.

King features who published the comics has a us copyright that has just over a year left. It's a situation that is somewhat like sherlock holmes was until January. Public domain in much pf the world but the estate still had the final stories until this past January.

People have been able to release holmes stuff from the public domain bits of holmes stuff as long as they didn't reference the protected ones.

Nintendo may be able to release the game on nso once that's up in January 2025z but I don't know if the game has any characters or elements from later popeye material that would still be protected.

Honestly the ip has little value and king features has little left to gain from it. It would be nice if they would sign any rights they have over the game to Nintendo so it could be re released. It would bring a bit of attention to the ip and popeye was an important thing to early Nintendo so it'd be nice to see brought out of the shadows.

We are definitely overdue for a Genesis update. The last one was June.

I wouldn't expect any announcements Thursday though with the holiday. So really, unless we have a surprise reveal soon, November is going to come and go without an NSO Expansion Pass update.

TBH I get the feeling that Genesis NSO is 1) not a huge draw for a lot of folks 2) not a priority for Nintendo or Sega 3) maaaaybe gonna get wound down as a “going concern” soon. I know the library, while great, has a fair number of all-timers missing, and they never got to Sega CD stuff at all, but I think the engagement numbers probably aren’t there to justify the effort/budget. I don’t think Genesis stuff is going to be removed from the service or anything (I would assume Nintendo’s smart enough to make that an “in perpetuity” deal) but given how long it’s been since the last update, I’m afraid that that app‘s library might be considered complete by Sega and Nintendo.

I’ve got no data or anything to prove any of this, it’s just a feeling I have.

I think Nintendo felt they didnt have to do anything with Wonder and RPG doing the rounds. They'll just dump as much as they can in December when they feel they got their early sales.

There is still a lot of first party Genesis games that are missing on the service.

Alex Kidd
Asterix and the Great Rescue
Bonanza Bros.
Chik Chik Boys
Ecco 2, 3
Golden Axe 3
Phantasy Star 2,3
Sonic 1, 3, and Kuckles
Streets of Rage 1 and 3
Vectorman 1, 2

That was just a quick scan on Wikipedia. I'm sure that there are plenty more (licensing stuff aside). I don't think the Genesis library is dead just yet.

Maybe they’re just slowing down to spread out the remaining releases or something?

I don’t want it to be over, I want that gut feeling I’ve got to be wrong, but man, this is the longest we’ve gone without an update by a lot… I just want more Sega goodness…

Jet Force Gemini certainly is a plot twist. Woulda pegged either Diddy Kong Racing or Banjo-Tooie as next-in-line as far as N64 Rare games go

More Rare games is good. Not sure why they left those out of the direct…maybe rights were still being negotiated. But keep them coming and let’s get some of the older and handheld systems included as well.

The fact we're getting JFG probably means eventually the entire Rare catalogue will be on NSO. You could argue both Banjo and Goldeneye were special circumstances, but afaik there's nothing unique about JFG in its development or licensing. By all accounts it's just a "3rd party" N64 game made by Rare now owned by MS.

I can see this. It also looks like Japan is getting an 18plus rated N64 app? Appeared that way in the YouTube video. Could mean even conkur makes it over to the service (and what’s to stop some of the other mature games at that point if there is an app that can be instantly locked via age ratings).

Lol. Just made a comment about this. Hopefully it has all the games so we don’t have to switch over. I think Perfect Dark and Conkur were the only rare M rated titles? If they do this in the US.
Lets get an 18+ NES app and get those unlicensed porn games

Do it Nintendo you cowards!

this is a joke

It is funny they had to make a separate N64 NSO app in Japan just because of CERO. I really don't know what they could add to that app later besides Perfect Dark.

There's other more mature Rare games like Conker and Killer Instinct Gold but those never released in Japan so unless Nintendo just drops the English versions in there they wouldn't get those. (Though I do want both those games to come to the western NSO)

We’re definitely getting dk64 and DKR

How many 18+ Nintendo 64 games are there? I can think of Resident Evil 2, Conker's Bad Fur Day, Perfect Dark, Duke Nukem 64, and Doom 64 off the top of my head. And that last one is already on the eShop.
Well according to Mobygames, there's 28 M-rated N64 games (dunno if this translates to 28 18+ games though; CERO and the ESRB aren't gonna be perfectly overlapped, but I can't find a list for CERO): https://www.mobygames.com/game/attribute:93/platform:n64/sort:title/page:1/

Bio Freaks
Carmageddon 2: Carpocalypse Now
Conker's Bad Fur Day
Doom 64
Duke Nukem 64
Duke Nukem: Zero Hour
ECW Hardcore Revolution
Forsaken 64
Hexen: Beyond Heretic
John Romero's Daikatana
MAce: The Dark Age
Mortal Kombat 4
Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero
Mortal Kombat Trilogy
Nightmare Creatures
Perfect Dark
Quake
Quake II
Resident Evil 2
Shadow Man
South Park
South Park Rally
South Park: Chef's Luv Shack
Turok 2: Seeds of Evil
Turok 3: Shadows of Oblivion
Turk: Dinosaur Hunter
Turok: Rage Wars
War Gods

Also might be worth noting I count at least 6 that are now owned by Microsoft (Conker, Doom 64, Hexen, Perfect Dark and the two Quakes), so if Xbox remains interested in being part of N64 NSO, the 18+ app could theoretically end up being a de-facto "MS on N64" app.

Jet force gemini being 18+ is just funny lol

Lol at CERO and their weird paranoia towards dismemberment and gore, even in retro city rampage.

Ngl it’s a far more appealing pick than the other roadmap games we could have gotten. They all kinda stink at this point save for HM64 so hopefully we get more surprises soon. (i dont expect new roadmaps with stuff drying up though)
Sega will let you license most of their Genesis collection for $5, I doubt it needs much engagement to justify it.

Lol absolutely not at all true anymore. The Atgames mess made them price up their games for big $$$ so companies like that can’t fuck em up anymore. There’s a reason you’ve seen Sega largely pull back on licensing post 2019 and Genesis stuff’s on the expansion pass.

M2/Sega are in charge of the releases iirc so they’ll put out new games when they feel like it. I hope for one more good drop before the end of the year… but i’m not worried about it dying.

So with Jet Force Gemini and Goldeneye, how long until we get SNES, NES, and GB Rare games?

How's about the Battletoads or Conker's Pocket Tales?

God.. I hope we can get Battletoads and Killer Instinct on NES and SNES apps...

EDIT: Without mention, all the GB/GBC/GBA games Rare made and they didn't even rerelease on Rare Replay
it's a pipe dream because it'd probably be up there with Goldeneye in terms of licensing headaches without any of the associated prestige, but I'd love to see Rare's Disney racing games come to NSO

Probably more to do with just for in general having an option to allow for M-Rated/Z-CERO/PEGI-16 games on NSO. Would mainly only apply to N64 and Gameboy Advance games anyway but Nintendo probably wants the option.

With an 18+ N64 app, maybe StarCraft 64 is a possibility? I mean they’re working with Microsoft, who owns StarCraft now

Would be cool to get the GBA DKC3 for the new soundtrack (though the SNES Fischer soundtrack is top notch. This is just for completion sake) and the GB Color version of DK Land 3. Who doesn’t need 4 (or 2 and 2) versions of that game

I imagine more stuff will come eventually. Sega seems very happy to license their games (genesis in particular) to anyone for a song. I think updates may slow like Nes and Snes have but will pop up eventually.
