Nintendo Co., Ltd. (HQ: Kyoto Minami-ku; Representative Director and President: Shuntaro Furukawa, "Nintendo" hereafter) today announced that it will develop a live-action film of The Legend of Zelda.

The film will be produced by Shigeru Miyamoto, Representative Director and Fellow of Nintendo and Avi Arad, Chairman of Arad Productions Inc., who has produced many mega hit films.

The film will be produced by Nintendo and Arad Productions Inc., and directed by Wes Ball. The film will be co-financed by Nintendo and Sony Pictures Entertainment Inc., with more than 50% financed by Nintendo. The theatrical distribution of the film will be done worldwide by Sony Pictures Entertainment Inc.

By producing visual contents of Nintendo IP by itself, Nintendo is creating new opportunities to have people from around the world to access the world of entertainment which Nintendo has built, through different means apart from its dedicated game consoles.

By getting deeply involved in the movie production with the aim to put smiles on everyone’s faces through entertainment, Nintendo will continue its efforts to produce unique entertainment and deliver it to as many people as possible.

edit:

Deadline reports that the screenplay will come from Jurassic World's Derek Connolly.

Oh no, it's live action! I hoped they would make it in anime style like this:

Not exactly the franchise I was hoping for they went live action with to be honest..

But I'll see it obviously but it could ruin so much :p

Sony, in the midst of developing live-action versions of all their own IP, agreeing to make a Zelda movie:

Not working with Universal is strange. But I expected live action. They want this to have a broad appeal for both kids and adults compared to Mario.

Really don't think they'll be able to make it work in live-action, but I guess I'm open to being wrong.

Co-financed with Sony's sort of a funny detail. I get Sony Pictures is relatively separate from Playstation, but still kinda amusing to think Sony's most-successful video game movie could end up being a Zelda one.

Avi Arad producing. Dude behind the Maze Runner film trilogy directing. No clue how to feel about this beyond F E A R.

I'd heard for a while Nintendo was keen on live action, but I'd always heard with Universal.

Nintendo is footing more than half the bill, they'll have almost full creative control here. Sony is basically just distributing.

The Nintendo X Sony collaboration lives on.

Link gets to talk in words and sentences on the big screen.

Wes Ball (Maze Runner films) directing and Avi Arad Studios with Nintendo producing...not sure I have the best hopes for it. Although I was one that liked the Maze Runner movies.

Avi Arad almost guarantees it being horrible and Sony Pictures’s recent live action films have not been great either.
Obviously, he and Wes Ball (the director) are going to be kept on pretty short leashes, because Nintendo is still in charge. They're just going to treat Sony Pictures like another "third party", just like they did Illumination.

Wes Ball has his upcoming Planet of the Apes flick to really change my mind about him, specifically, though.

Ehh, I’d prefer cel-animation or CGI, but I’ll still watch either way (on streaming). Skeptical though willing to keep an open mind.

The story they're adapting has to be Ocarina of Time, right? or at least heavily based on it?
My guess would be Breath of the Wild or Tears of the Kingdom.
