News Nintendo officially announces live-action Zelda film, produced by Shigeru Miyamoto and Avi Arad, directed by Wes Ball

Not sure if anyone has made the joke but:
What if half way through the filming, Nintendo just back down and decide to make Zelda movie with others studios instead?

I'd heard for a while Nintendo was keen on live action, but I'd always heard with Universal.

Nintendo is footing more than half the bill, they'll have almost full creative control here. Sony is basically just distributing.

That's not really true, Sony is basically financing half. It's not like Avi Arad has $150 million lying around to finance/market a movie, lol.

Nintendo and Sony will be partners, we are probably talking a $150 mill production budget minimum, but then you have to add in marketing spend which could be another $100 million.

As someone who loves films and whatnot.

this is so disappointing to hear. I don’t think this will end up being good. And I don’t mean the live action stuff. That I always had an open mind and don’t think Zelda is a series that only works animated.

it’s more the folks behind it lol. And yeah, I thought the Mario Film was mediocre and downright forgettable.

Cautiously optimistic but this is exciting! The day when the main trio are case is going to be legendary.

Fuck, how did I miss this for 40 minutes.
Hope they adapt Ocarina of Time time travel, child and adult elements.

Live-action.... I don't like that. I would have preferred Nintendo to focus only on animated films based on its IP.

Everytime a new movie is out we are gonna do the "This is going to be a dumpster fire" dance aren't we?

It’s not like the reasoning is the same here. If they said it was animated I’d at least have faith that it could be another nostalgic family focused adventure.

It’s live action tho. In an era when so many attempts at making live action adaptations from animated sources are horrible, and most video game adaptions continue to miss the mark.

FRAK!

Well at least it's live action. Haven't seen any of the director's work but it really comes down to the writing. But hey, FNAF did well so literally nothing matters for this to be successful. To be good though...

Seeing as Miyamoto-san is co-producer with Arad, the only way this movie works out is if Miyamoto truly is a multi-disciplinary genius. Which, you know, maybe...

Sure, those movies are well-loved, I get it. Fair enough. I'm just not a comic books or cape-movie guy, so for me to see that be 90% of his work was a major oof.
I mean, love them or hate them, the ENTIRE modern cinematic landscape was changed when X-Men trilogy and Spider-Man trilogy came out. That was the real start of the superhero genre domination that carries the entire industry today.
No Spider-Man and no X-Men means no MCU, and no MCU means the entire film industry is a completly different place

There's just nothing in the announcement to be optimistic about. Miyamoto's involvement might be the only saving grace.

Of course, I'll be happy to be proved wrong. The Mario Movie looked like a disaster too, but in the end it was good enough.

And none of that is related to Nintendo. So that poster is right. You see the same song and dance of negativity. If it was animated there would be negative responses too. Let’s be real

I think Zelda can work fine with more live action style, even though there is CGI work in this, this could be replicated in live action.

A movie done in this vein would make a ton of money. A ton.

Fun fact ... Sony hired the guys who made this short film, lol.

People are too pessimistic about this stuff, like the Mario movie when there was a vocal crowd saying it would bomb/tank/be the worst thing ever, instead it became one of the highest grossing movies of the current decade.

I recall this getting out not that long ago. Obviously not with all these specifics. Was that rumor denied by Nintendo at the time?

Edit: Also, live action Zelda doesn't sound great! So long as they don’t use the classic tunic it has a chance at not looking terrible…

Most living things in Zelda games aren’t human (hylian), so I’m curious how they approach CG here. Hyper realistic Zora and Goron designs sounds gross.
mix of pratical effects/CGI, they should made the movies, like Warner Bros did with Harry Potter, a mix of pratical effects/CGI or the new Star Wars movies(that is pratical/CGI)

how Nintendo is gonna do a live action movie of the Legend of Zelda, knowing Link never talks?
Link does talk you know that right? They’re not making a movie where Tom Holland just stands there and makes facial expressions throughout the whole movis

Terrible idea. Best case scenario this movie reviews terribly but people go to see it anyway. Worst case scenario it flops like Morbius, which is very possible with Avi Arad is involved.

He will talk. Simple as that.

It's like all the "how can you make a Mario movie with Mario speaking in that accent!" ... well they just dropped the accent for the movie. Easy, peasy.

These are movies, not video games, Nintendo understands that.

Well, those fantasy dreams from 2 decades after LOTR trilogy was released will be finally true.

Considering this is a live action movie, we will probably get more leaks than Mario movie.

Miyamoto, and Nintendo in general, made a good job supervising Mario movie.

I think they should try to chase popular well known actors in their 20’s for Link/Zelda role.

Ever since the Mario movie was announced, I've dreaded the day a Zelda movie would be announced. I have 0 faith this will be anything but slop. Zelda deserves better.

Oof. That sucks. The Mario movie was ok, but the only thing that made it half decent was the fact that it was animated. That along with the names involved. Zero expectations for this one

I work in the industry, I know how the budgets work haha. The press release is very clear Nintendo is funding "more than half." That's code for "they're in charge." Sony will help with resources, knowledge in the logistics of actually making it, and a release strategy. Sony has the infrastructure, but Nintendo is driving the ship. Sony is putting in the money up front to be able to take a piece of the pie when it hits big at the box office.

With this being a co-funded project between Nintendo and Sony Pictures, with a majority of ownership by Nintendo. I expect Nintendo will still try to keep this on track for the series and not have the director/producers take it away from their vision. Probably some Link origin story medieval fantasy, that follows him meeting Zelda, Ganon, and such and not some out of nowhere story that doesn't follow the games.

Will be interesting to see who they decide to cast as the main roles, but its very likely going to be more popular actor/actresses to get the non-Zelda people to see it.

Meh I'm not buying the doom posting.

This could easily (easily) be an enormous hit like the Mario movie, which had the same people crying it was going to be a flop because Illumination wasn't their favorite animation studio. Chris Pratt is gonna tank it, Mario has no story, etc. etc. etc.

The general public doesn't have such a stick up their ass about this kind of stuff, and there's enough to draw from the games to have a fun, and in Zelda's case, probably beautiful looking 2 hour movie.

It will do well. There is a dearth of fantasy content and people want big movies without every one being a freaking, tired superhero movie. Zelda will be a breath of fresh air I predict, the box office potential is very high.

Link talks all the time. We just don't hear it.

Link has never been portrayed as this stoic, silent knight. Even in BotW and TotK (where it's somewhat a part of his personality) he very clearly talks to people and is often a goofball.

I will never get this hang up on him having a voice. He's just a young-ish dude, and that's what he'll sound like.

since it's sony it's either going to look weirdly cheep or be the most expensive movie sony has ever made

Just like the Mario movie, this announcement is gonna get people talking. There is a pretty high box office potential with this IF they play their cards right. Big IF. Either way, this will be quite entertaining.

As someone who has also seen the Maze runner trilogy.

Im even more sure the film would be at best mediocre. And I like the first one lol. It an entertainment enough film that I wouldn’t exactly call good. But fine for what it is. It’s one of those “background” movies I play when getting stuff down or playing handheld on switch.

Then the second one is such a mess tho. And the third I can’t even remember much cause I watched it out since I’ve seen the other 2 already.

Oh my God, it finally happened. I don't know if I trust Avi Arad with this, but maybe Miyamoto can make it work
