News Nintendo officially announces live-action Zelda film, produced by Shigeru Miyamoto and Avi Arad, directed by Wes Ball

Morbius producer? A writer from RISE OF SKYWALKER? They couldn't get better people?

They're probably going to go the boring route for casting and it's gonna be Timothee Chalamet or something, but I secretly hope the casting is a little deranged. Give us the laughs of the Mario movie casting reveal!

i hope with all my heart that this movie is good, this is the single property that I care most about being treated and adapted well
but god even besides the initial live action part, the credits do not give me hope
Just wait until you hear about Peter Jackson's Evangelion, staring such famous characters as Kate Rose and Ray.

I wonder if Peter Jackson was on their list to try to direct?
He sure as hell woulda been on mine

To be fair, you're picking pretty much Arad's worst movie. He was also the producer of Iron Man and Spider-Verse so like.. 🤷

And the writer Derek Connolly won the Independent Spirit Award for writing Safety Not Guaranteed.

They will not let this movie be bad. Nintendo would absolutely be fine with wasting $50 million of this movie and if they see it is abysmal with testing groups, drop it. Kit and Krysta said before in their podcast that despite Mario being the mascot, they hold Zelda to higher standards than any other franchise. They use it to demonstrate quality, which I think shows. They will delay and delay Zelda to make it good (at least, mainline). Mario they're fine with random fun titles. They won't risk a multi-billion dollar franchise at its absolute peak for a movie that will net them less revenue than the past two games. If it tanks, all it does is hurt the games and brand.

Live-action is fine. Someone else mentioned superheroes. Previously, they looked pathetically funny. Now we live in a time with high budgets, good CGI, and the audience to back those up. These things are mainstream now. Superhero movies look fantastic and their characters have been altered to make sense. I wouldn't be surprised if what Link wears, for example, is green-tinted armor, or just a green overshirt over top of armor or something to that effect. They'll make it make sense. This is 2023 Nintendo with younger people at the Zelda helm. And older generation Zelda will not let their brand get tarnished by a bad movie. They'd literally rather lose millions.

I'm trying to think of who I would like to play Princess Zelda and I'm coming up empty. Fami, recommendations?
no one because they should unmake this thing pronto

barring that, Danny Devito

We might have one of our first cast members.

6 Months Ago, WWE Wrestler Cody Rhodes was rumored to be in negotiations for a role in the film.

It's unknown what potential role this might've been. But it is interesting we might've had some tidbits of info fly under the radar.

directors next film, so it'll at least look visually good

The director is solid, his CG demo for that mouse thing was great too. He's a big time Zelda player too.

I think they are going to come up with something solid, this has the potential to make more than the Mario movie if the the script is a half decent adventure movie. Live action has broader appeal with adults and Zelda has much better story potential than Mario.

will Nintendo spend as much on visual effects tho?

$1.3 billion and 2nd largest movie of the year for Nintendo in 2023 the first time out of the gate ... yeah I'm going to take a wild guess here and say they aren't going to cheap out on future movies.

He didn't write Rise of Skywalker, he was working on previous version of Episode IX (Star Wars: Duel of the Fates) which means by WGA rules he gets a credit for Episode IX no matter what, but he didn't do the JJ Abrams script. Abrams did his own thing with a different writer.

He co-wrote Jurassic World, and if people want to hate on that, fine, but it made $1.5 billion at the box office and had huge legs and solid reviews too (71% Fresh on RT). Lots of people enjoyed it.

You just gave me something I never thought of, and now I'm going to be disappointed if it doesn't happen.

LET THE GROOSE LOOSE AVI ARAD. YOU KNOW YOU WANT TOOOOO
Groose needs to come back. There's a lot of recurring characters in Zelda and he was in the very first game in the timeline. And Groose definitely has decedents, 100%. Bring back Groose Nintendo!

I dread the day if Splatoon gets adapted in the west with a similar fate, regardless if it's live action or animation. Please Nintendah..... I'm beggin ya..... don't do it!!

Call me a fanboy but much more interested in where they're filming and who will be doing the effects, both practical and digital.

Yall know where I'm headed with this.

A Splatoon anime would cause Japan to implode. It will happen, it is only a matter of time.
I'd much rather see that become a reality atleast. I'm definitely biased on this but my suspicions of quality go way up if they were planning to do anything with Splatoon outside of Japan. But since the fanbase is just so huge there it's hard to imagine them going all in with a western adaptation unless if they specifically want to attract more fans here.

FYI, Studio Ghibli already made a movie about a guy in a blue tunic with a bow and arrow and a cursed arm traveling across an untamed world, meeting various people in different regions, befriending little white forest spirits and fighting creatures covered in "gloom" - it's called Princess Mononoke. Check it out, it's pretty good.

Which is exactly why Cartoon Saloon shoulda done this instead

yes I will die on this hill, yall're gonna haveta scrape me off it

Ready for some 100% pure trash. Have no faith in the project so hoping it'll at least be funny.
I'd be more enthusiastic and say "well, Nintendo tends to be really protective of their properties and brought the best from some mediocre studios" but Mario movie felt like it was written by an AI, so...

Having had several hours to speedrun the stages of grief and settle on "wait and see", I just want to say as a manga enjoyer I'm fine with Link talking, That'll be all.

Zelda movie? Although I am not much of a fan of the game series (I think they're great for other people, but it just doesn't stuck with me), I do think this is quite nice. Most names of the film industry don't really ring a bell for me, so does Avi Arad. I googled him, and apparently he does a lot of work with Marvel, especially the Spiderman movies.

Well, whatever the film is gonna be, I think it's nice to hear, and I look forward to it. I think it's a great direction from Nintendo to make movies aside from games. I do have a feeling this'll have a more serious tone than the Mario Movie. Seeing Hyrule Castle and perhaps the Temple of Time in live action would be cool to see, as well as Gorons, the Zora, koroks and perhaps Navi?

They're aiming for PG-13 with this, aren't they.

There's zero reason to go with live action otherwise.
"Zero" reason is a bit much. I can think of one reason: people might like it.

Take me for instance, I've pictured a LotR-style Zelda movie almost as long as LotR has been out. I'm genuinely more happy about this being live action than I would have been if they had gone back to Illumination for it.

I'm curious how they'll tackle Links personality. He's always sorta had one but it'll be different when he's speaking, especially when it has to be stereotypical enough to immediately convey who he is to the audience. I'm also curious if it'll effect how he's perceived and/or presented in the games.

Fair enough, I suppose.

I'm personally just tired of how animation is written off as toddler fare and an animated Zelda movie that aimed at more mature audiences could've been a big ice breaker, provided it was made by the right people.

Like everybody else here my initial reaction is a strong sense of dread over this. Hard to imagine this turning out well. Especially with the uninspired people attached so far.

I reaaaaally hope that they get the tone right. Zelda ever since ALttP has had a lot of charm and quirkiness to the characters and world. I really hope that they don’t turn that in to Hollywood-marvel jokes.

I could see something kind of like the His dark materials tv series work ok. A story focused on young link and Zelda adventuring and surviving together, meeting quirky characters and magical wonders.

But man can it be bad if it’s to Americanized.

I've always interpreted Link as being courageous but also a bit goofy and skittish. Like he's putting effort into being brave. I'm reminded a bit of a show I just finished where the main character was sheepish and fighting anxiety but was also really intense, and when they gathered the wherewithal to be assertive, it was compelling to watch.

...dammit, now I'm picturing Mae Martin as Link.

Oh yeah this I totally understand. I would've been fine with either but if it had been animated I would've had a lot of opinions about who "the right people" are (which is already obvious in my posts in this thread 😅) and would be right there with you as far as it not being made to be kiddy stuff.

Luckily I think Netflix animated series are beginning to soften the assumption that animation is for kids, and I'm sure Guillermo Del Toro's impassioned shouts of "animation is cinema" through the whole awards circuit for Pinocchio was heard by some people.

The producer of Daredevil, director of Maze Runner and writer of Jurassic World.

I mean I guess it will be competent trash.
Or:

The producer of Iron Man, Raimi's Spiderman 2, and Across the SpiderVerse, director of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, and writer of Safety Not Guaranteed.

Seriously, why is everyone just cherry-picking the worst films of these people's careers?

I won't write this off on the basis of being live-action, but I'd certainly hoped for something animated instead. Makes it hard to be too excited right now without any indication of how it'll ultimately turn out.

I agree with you, I did enjoy Iron Man, Spiderman 2 (and have yet to see the Spider verse films). But overall, I have not really an opinion on this thread, simply because I haven't seen any footage. But also, people complained about the Mario Movie that was made by Illumination, without seeing any footage, due to people being familiar with Illu's previous work. But if you look at Illu's work on the Mario Movie with Nintendo being heavily involved in it, it was a pretty good job from them. And I can see the same with this film. While Avi Arad has some notable works that weren't that good, I'm sure with Nintendo being heavily involved in this, that it will be all fine in the end.

Illumination was a waaaaaay better choice than the names we heard here, which all screams B movies and not in a good way. Something à la uwe boll's doom or Paul anderson's monster hunter or resident evil.

90% of the Community complained about the voice of Mario. And the movie turned out to be good because Miyamoto was right there all the time. Same will happen with this movie. Avi made so many movies. Only 3 of them were Bad. Taking only those 3 as an example is a Bit unfair when you have all the Other movies which are beloved until today.

Miyamoto and Arad have been discussing the Zelda Movie for about 10 years.
宮本氏は任天堂が8日開いた経営方針説明会に出席し、「アラッド氏と10年ほど話し合いを続けてきた」と説明した。
Regarding his choice to make a live-action film instead of an animation film, he recognizes that it is a very high hurdle to meet the expectations of fans.
He wants to create a trend where families go to see Nintendo movies every year.

It's probably going to be a). great looking, b). above-average sounding and c). below-average storywise. I just hope these ventures aren't taking too much out of EPD resourcewise.

based on what i heard about avi arad making the call for the spot to be the villain in spider verse

as well as a lot of older super hero tv shows

this can be good, these two dont equate to bad.

I hate live action. Zelda screams of Ghibli to me, why not a film in that style? Ghibli also has some level of mass appeal.
Ghibli could've worked too. The animation of Totoro is still loved by me, but I believe in Miyamoto's confidence in this live action take aswell.

Because like you said, Miyamoto will be there all the time, so they won't let Avi and Wes do all the stuff. Nintendo is heavily involved in this, and I'm sure they'll do everything to not make the 90's Super Mario Movie again, or even "americanize" it.

Well, they originally wanted Wes A. But, they had to settle for Wes B.
