StarTopic Metroidvania |ST| Navigation Aggregation

Gestalt has been coming out this year for like 3 years now, I'm honestly getting a bit worried

It does look quite good though, so hopefully it lives up to its potential when/if it eventually releases

So, there are two Metroidvanias whose demos I was impressed by during Steam Next Fests earlier this year, and the first is Gestalt: Steam & Cinder. With how late in the year it is without a more specific date, and how long this one has been around already, I highly doubt it's actually coming in 2023 like the Steam page says, to say the least. But the demo I played did feel like the beginning of a polished game rather than a trimmed down vertical slice or a proof of concept. It seems like one of those games that's been delayed year after year, to the point where I imagine folks following it from the start have no hope in it ever coming out anymore, but what I played sure didn't feel like vaporware.

It begins with your obligatory Metroidvania backstory about corruption this and dying world that. Then I'm a sick steampunk cowgirl (or maybe pirate?) fighting robots and rescuing lost corgis. They recognize that the most important aspect of being like Symphony of the Night is having a cool animation for your clothes and hair when running.

Unlike many newer games in the genre, it's not too punishing, with plenty of ways to recover health and a reasonable amount of damage dealt by enemies. You could think of it as an alternate evolutionary path from Symphony of the Night that went in a slower, tankier direction much like Metroid Prime did from Super Metroid. Slowness is not the sort of thing I usually like, but in today's climate of Metroidvania protagonists made of tissue paper, this feels like a breath of fresh air. The difficulty can very easily make exploration a slog in other games.

And while it's not a tight and agile platformer, the gameplay still very much delivers. It puts a little more of the "RPG" into action RPG, while at the same time acknowledging its platformer side by making excellent use of enemies in its level design, placing them in locations and combinations that make their unique traits a problem. Think the spacing and high ground enemy dynamics of Rondo of Blood, or the nasty enemy combinations of DKC2. Stronger foes work around a break meter vaguely similar to Xenoblade's combat system. But like, straightforward and understandable.

The lead designer directly credits Rondo and Symphony, and even said the game was an attempt to answer the question of what it would look like if Chrono Cross and Xenogears-era Square had made a game inspired by Castlevania. But despite this it feels somehow distinctly "western" to me in its gameplay and visual language. I feel like there are few good western platformers that aren't flavored like a Japanese platformer, so it was interesting to experience. Here's hoping it's actually going to come out.

Right, is this how this works? “Please add this to the calendar xghost777!”

I’ve been looking forward to this game for a long while, but it’s been pushed back so much. Hopefully we’ll see it in 2024!

Finished Yohane Blaze in the deepblue at 7ish hours. Found it very good and very accesible metroidvania game, really like when the game respects your time and you can fast travel at any moment. As other have mentioned it's on the easy side and you can even brute force your way with items, but I also suspect that cames from the higher powers (Bamco and Happinet) in order to be accesible to any type of player (and if you want a challenge you can always unnequip accesories). As usual Inti pixel art is gorgeous and bosses where the highlight having multiple phases and varying their patterns (just like their action games) and I actually enjoyed the boss rush at the ending and you can reset them if you want to fight them again. Also the game ost is very good, the wrecked ship theme is catchy.

A shame the game bombed though (Switch version was around 6k copies and PS5 versions didn't even manage to get to the top 30 this week), this game should have launched when the anime was airing.

It's funny cause even with no healing items but accessories, the boss patterns and stuff still had me die 4-5 times on some of them... but the boss patterns are apparently really easy for most? I also have Contra 3 and Hard Corps next on my backlog.. should I be afraid? lol

It's just a matter of learning them, and the fact you can pretty much stay in air forever using sub weapons helps to avoid any mistake or bad jump.

As for contra 3 and hardcore's,welp, good luck lol

I’m a bit narked that I missed out on Vigil before it was delisted. I almost bought it so many times but always thought ‘wait for a better sale’. One of the few times my retail philosophy has let me down!

Itorah and Last Epic I’ve added to my wishlist. I almost bought 3,000th Duel before but can’t remember why I didn’t. It’s on sale at the moment…

9 Years of shadow completed with 101%. As mentioned before, since this was made by a studio in the city where I live had to support the local team. Some of the comments here made it sound like the game was broken but it turned out 99% of the game runs well, played around 10 hours without any crash or any issue that could affect the gaming. There is a good variety of bosses with different sizes, the bigger ones having at some point bullet hell patterns without affecting the framerate ( with the exception of one optional boss, more on that later) so if perfomance is your concern it's not an issue here. Still have to mention that rather than frame rate drop, it has some frame pacing issues. Nothing that will affect gameplay but just at some points the animation do some weird skips

I think they did a good job with their first game, the castle layour is well planed, the traversal and power ups upgrades where actually very creative and the color mechanic does add some variety to just slashing enemies. The life mechanic is also very good, you don't have to worry on health pickups here, your life bar consists of the light bar and it's filled either manually once it's empty (leaving you open to enemy attacks) or by hitting/killing things, and if it gets consumed you still have a chance to do a quick refill (that you can miss, especially if you are fighting against a boss). Also all the characters you meet are really well designed, particulary Europa and her not Saint Seiya armors (devs acknowledge the influence, because México of course).

kwWcm9U.jpg

Thinks that hopefully they can improve for Mariachi legends:
  1. Having a more complex combat, you only have one combo and charge attack so there is not so much in fighting strategy here.
  2. Adding some quick travel: there is a central elevator in the game but it's useless for 90% of the game, you want to go exploring you need to walk there
  3. More enemy variety: Understandable since this was the first game but all the enemies are just colors reskins so you won't find variety here.( But bosses are very good, a lot of variety)

Now as mentioned there is one optional boss that affects the game perfomance just for that fight, which is weird because it's not a giant boss and doesn't have full screen / bullet hell attacks. Also a weird bug is that you don't see the actual boss sprite BUT you can see the mist surrounding him so you always know where he is, and the fight overall is not that hard once you learn it's attack patterns so it's totally doable if you want that 101% (and devs confirmed they are working on a patch)

Tevi is out on Switch! Didn’t think it’d be up at midnight so I’m excited to dive in right away tonight :)

Sadly I did hear the Switch version got delayed in Europe for three weeks so that’s a bummer :/

3 hours into Tevi and I just reached chapter 2 with 9% map completion and 4% items so just wanted to give some early impressions. I’m not too into the story or characters much yet and at the start they were talking too much for that, but about an hour in they let you loose finally with a few options of where to go next at once. Here the flow was much better and the now shorter conversations were fine, so hopefully it strikes a better balance going forward. The level of fan service elements compared to Rabi Ribi has been thankfully toned down, the character designs are generally improved which is good, and the addition of male characters is welcome. There have been tired anime jokes throughout (breast jokes, pervy old guy, etc) so expect that if you were interested.

Main reason to play this like Rabi Ribi is definitely the gameplay and I am very excited from what I’ve played so far. Immediately it feels like a direct sequel to Rabi Ribi which already felt great to play, but with some smart improvements. As you level up, melee combat drifts deeper into a Devil May Cry-like array of options, feel, and speed. Ranged combat is also improved by you no longer having to hold the magic button to charge your attacks as the magic gauge refills rapidly and automatically after use. I’ve been limited to where I can go as I don’t have too many items/upgrades yet, but thus far the map design seems more interesting than early Rabi Ribi so I’m excited to keep exploring. We’ll see how it goes, but I’m intrigued by both the badge and crafting systems so far even if the amount of buffs and debuffs this game has seems overwhelming. Last thing for now, the bosses I’ve fought so far have all been great with more interesting patterns and attacks that don’t all rely on bullet hell patterns (which are also fun). I like the new break gauge mechanic for bosses, because it feels very satisfying when you can just go wild and even juggle a boss for a bit.

So largely good start so far! I’m balancing a few games, but I’ll be primarily playing Tevi until I finish it.

I’m nearly 8 hours into Tevi now with 29% map completion and 14% items. After the rough start with the story yesterday, I’ve been much more positive on it today. I guess they got a lot of the dumb jokes out of the way first. The characters have been much more likable too which is good because each area of the map with a quest usually has two or three rounds of dialogue as you go through it and some of these quests have been quite fun even if the structure is generally the same - enter the area, explore it, beat the boss. Incidentally, the bosses have been great. Big step up from Rabi-Ribi so far for regular bosses.

I’ve been focusing on the story more since upgrades are usually attached to it (like better bombs, better jumping, etc.), but I do appreciate the map opening up more and more since it offers the chance for more upgrades if you can handle the higher level of danger. When the game’s difficulty is higher, I find myself taking more advantage of Tevi’s full moveset which is great. I’m hoping I’ll get the slide/crawl/morph ball/whatever ability soon since I’m 8 hours in and keep passing so many areas where that’s needed lol.

Might be a smidge busy the next few days, but I’m excited to keep going!

Momodora Moonlit Farewell got a new trailer and a release date for Steam for January 11th 2024! Hope consoles won’t be too far behind though it seems to have taken about a year for their prior games. I’ll wait patiently for the Switch / Switch 2 version.

Really, don't miss on Tevi, it's really a step up from RabiRibi in every way. I do haveto say I actually appreciate the story I've never feel it's intrusive but really the main difference is that you can actually understand it since RabiRibi translation was really bad. My only issue so far is the UI and text size, since its very small, hopefully they can patch that because the lore text on the notebook is impossible for me to read without being very close to the tv

As for combat, yes this is Tevy May Cry

This looks pretty good! Back to the pixel art style of Reverie Under the Moonlight, which I definitely prefer. That's sooner than I expected, too.

Just dropping in to say that Infernax is very cool. I'm taking a break because I died and lost a lot of progress, but I really enjoy the setup and the decision making. It might be one that I play through more than once depending on how many branching paths there are.

I’m 17.5 hours in and hit 50% map completion and 40% items so I wanted to give another Tevi update. Having an awesome time. It was already a great deal of fun, but Tevi really hit its stride around the Plagued Forest area which culminated in my favorite boss fight yet. Tevi’s moveset is very satisfying and in true Metroidvania fashion is only getting cooler as I unlock more items. The badge and crafting systems are making my journey feel more personal as I pick my upgrades too. Rabi-Ribi was already substantial in length, but I’m really impressed all the same how big this game is and how it has built and maintained its great sense of flow throughout. With all of the many areas I’ve explored so far, it’s wild to think I still have half of the journey to go.

Edit: Ended tonight at 22 hours, 65% map completion, and 48% items. Had three really rad boss fights today. One had Vergil-like moves and then the others were the Diamond Pyramid and Egg monster things shown in the trailers. The boss fights in this game are such a huge step up from Rabi Ribi since they aren’t all character duels and since they have multiple distinct phases and varied attacks. I love how some have unique mechanics too like the Diamond Pyramid thing having a shield you have to disable or the plant monster the other day having a phase where you temporarily get a limited number of double jumps. I’m really excited to see this game through. I have limited time this week, so I’m going to focus what I have fully on it.

Yes the bosses, even the single ones have been amazing, and even in normal more challenging than rabiribi. The fight against the siren Queen with the daughter in the background debuffing you was very fun.

Also for anyone interested you better use the markers because once you get upgrades new paths, collectibles and other things can be easily missable.

Also it was nice to see Erina and Ribbon again in the casino, now voiced, and the rabi smash Game is highly addictive ( plus it has a very good remix of the first Game boss battle)

Wanted to give another Tevi update. I’m 29.5 hours in at 82% map completion and 62% items so I must be nearing the end right? Feels like I’m preparing to storm the big bad’s stronghold though I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s a twist or two given Rabi Ribi had three different endings and some of the loose ends haven’t been tied up yet. (Don’t tell me!)

I especially dug fighting Vassago and Amaryllis the prior day and the wrestler today. The two in spoiler tags had amazing bullet hell attacks and just kept getting more and more intense with each phase. The first one took me a few tries because they hit like a truck at times (and uh literally with one too lol.) The wrestler (and to a lesser extent the one after) was a fun change of pace after those two extra tough ones. I loved the ring out debuff so much lol.

I ended on doing one of the hidden races around the world tonight (the one in the top right-ish corner of the map in the Valhalla floating island section) which was a very fun gauntlet as you have so many movement options at this point to take advantage of navigating the terrain and stalling out enemies. Feels so good to nail the perfect run.

I think at this point I’ll probably give a final post when I finish the game (unless I hit maybe 40 hours and I’m somehow still going lol), but yeah despite the rough start I had in the first hour or so I think I’m going to be highly recommending this game. Generally has been super fun throughout and it’s impressive it has maintained that with how massive it is.

I finished Tevi tonight and wow what an ending! I did not at all think I would finish the final boss on my first attempt and it was extra gut clenching as I entered into the final phase as I was out of health items and dangerously low on HP, but I pulled through! (Omg at the screen tilting left and right to make it even more stressful atop the vicious bullet hell!) I’m thoroughly pleased I stuck with Normal difficulty all the way through because Rabi Ribi I still could not fully finish with its third credits final boss even on the easiest level. All of the awesome attacks and movement options made this such a delight to play from start to finish and it was such an awesome map to explore and navigate. I also dug the story a bunch through that last stretch as the big moments landed. This definitely jumped into my top ten favorite games this year and I think it will stick with me for a while.

My final time was 34:11 with 90% map completion, 68% items, and 114 sigils. It was a fairly thorough playthrough and I’m good calling it here despite an option for a post game clean up existing as well as other challenge modes opening up. I’m satisfied.

Living up to your ‘magical girls’ subtitle :)

Idk what people have been smoking with the criticism of Afterimage but this game has been wonderful so far. It's just a really pretty hand drawn metroidvania, with a huge map filled with content, a ton of well done RPG mechanics and an interesting albeit cryptic world to explore. It does so many things brilliantly with only a few slight missteps, but it's still easily in the upper tiers of metroidvanias for me.

Yet I look on metacritic and I see this game sitting at a 63. WTF?

I have this game and just haven't played it yet. Looking forward to giving it a try! I'm not sure why it's so lowly rated either

If any of y'all are playing on PC, I just saw that Humble has a Metroidvania bundle going on. Nothing super special, just the usual suspects but definitely worth the 15 bucks:

Hollow Knight, Rainworld, Blasphemous, Bloodstained (those are the obvious ones), Lost Ruins, Lone Fungus and Haiku, the Robot (haven't heard about any of these)

And finished Tevi at 36 hours! The last boss fights were incredible and the last areas were also very well designed putting all the skills to use. Also I really liked all the options with the sygil system and there is a lot to choose from making your fighting style highly customizable. Overall it made in my top 5 now.

I want to complete the full map but going to wait for the next patch since the last one broke the in-game achievment system, and you need those to unlock new modes. Also I'm assuming there is going to be DLC since two areas didn't open even after finishing the game

I want to get into this genre but I have no idea where to start. I absolutely loved Ori and the blind forest when I played it.

I have an interest in the new Prince of Persia game. I’m often worried that hollow knight might not be for me.

Ooh, ‘how to get into the genre’ is a good question. If I was going to recommend something fairly simple and short, I’d go for Timespinner, or Alwa’s Awakening, or Infernax. All of those are pretty fast paced with worlds that aren’t massive.

After that, the genre has so much to offer, from more souls-like games that are focused on intense combat with a lot of spotting patterns and counters even in basic enemies, to more exploration with fast-paced combat, to more puzzles, to a mix of the above.

Seconding Alwa's Awakening, @Legion. Its sequel, Alwa's Legacy, is good too (but quite a bit bigger, so cut your teeth on Awakening first)

Also any of the Castlevania games from the advance collection are very friendly to new comers. Other ones very friendly too:

  • Steamworld Dig 2
  • Monsterboy and the cursed kingdom

Sticking to "classic" mode on Infernax, but it's getting pretty difficult. More details:

I'm doing the evil path, which already makes things more difficult, and I'm at the part where you storm Darsov and fight a bunch of bosses in a row. I have gotten REALLY close to beating Tancred, but ultimately fell short. Maybe I'll get it tomorrow!

It's an awesome game, and it's really satisfying when I finally get it right and beat difficult sections. I'm glad I randomly found it on a "good games on sale" list a couple weeks ago!

Along with the other suggestions, I'll add that most of the Shantae games (specifically Risky's Revenge, Pirate's Curse, and Seven Sirens) are all pretty entry-level/approachable metroidvanias in my experience

Hollow Knight is probably a bit much if you're just getting into the genre; it's fantastic, but it has a fairly heavy focus on combat and boss battles (it borrows a lot from Souls games in that regard) and a massive world that can be a bit daunting

Yeah it’s a really good game, one of my favourites. Lends itself well to replays as it’s relatively short too, there’s so few games I return to but I’ve played through Infernax 3 times.

I somehow missed that Momodora Moonlit Farewell is out January 11th, that's in barely over two weeks! Really snuck up on me. That with Prince of Persia a week later look to be a very solid start to 2024 Metroidvanias.

Before I completely forget about it and we're well into the new year, I wanted to post about the other Metroidvania I've been looking forward to this year. Last time, I mentioned there were two games. Well, the other one is Moonlight Pulse, currently slated for sometime next year. This one immediately makes an impression with a unique setting: the inside of a giant living creature. The environment isn't just a reskinned cave either. You'll be using veins to get around, and your job, as a bunch of magic cartoon animals of somewhat varying anthropomorphism, is to hunt down parasites to keep your host alive. Like a Pokemon Osmosis Jones, I guess. Or are Pokemon fans more into Cells at Work?

This is one of those games with a focus on character switching, which I'm aware of a few of in the genre, but haven't played any personally aside from Portrait of Ruin. Which I wouldn't say really counts. You definitely need to switch here, not just for special abilities, but for survival when one character gets worn down. There's more tension and difficulty to this one than Gestalt, but not to the degree that just getting around is a constant trial. I'd estimate it's more akin to later Metroids like Fusion and Dread in difficulty. There was a pretty challenging boss fight to cap the demo off that took me quite a few tries. While this didn't appear in the demo in any obvious fashion, the Steam page promises that "A foreboding presence lurks in the shadows... one that drastically changes the state of the world and how it's traversed," which sounds intriguing in light of the little bits of willingness to mess with the layout that the demo already displayed.

It also has a surprising emphasis on plot, with the demo ending on a cliffhanger shortly after the boss. It's not overly trite or predictable either. There were multiple sequences that surprised and intrigued me, like the visit to the prison which turns unexpectedly surreal. I have to say, I usually skip past the generic opening story when I'm playing these demos, it's not like it's really going to be relevant in them anyway. But these two games both had me invested in their plot, and I'm not usually the type to care much about story in games to begin with.

Please add this to the calendar!

Ooh that sounds really cool and the trailer looks neat! I just updated the calendar and linked to your post :)

Finished Sword of the Vagrant. That was an absolute pain of a final boss, capping off an aggressively 6/10 game. Apparently I didn’t get the true ending because I didn’t get the 4 super-hidden macguffins I didn’t know about that, even if I did, would have required a ton of backtracking to get an extra short post-credits scene. lol. That’s exactly the kinda post-game crap I don’t stick around for.

Onwards!

Here's a random metroidvania tier list from me:

S (Games that I love unconditionally) - Super Metroid, Symphony of the Night

A (Hit all the right notes for me and left a strong impression) - Ori 1 & 2, Afterimage, Metroid Zero Mission, Ender Lilies, Metroid Dread, SteamWorld Dig 2

B (Enjoyable games that either had something holding them back or just weren't as memorable for me) - Hollow Knight, Samus Returns, Metroid Fusion, Blasphemous, Any Shantae game I've played, Guacamelee 1 & 2

C (Games that didn't quite click or underwhelmed) - Iconoclasts, Momodora Reverie Under the Moonlight, SteamWorld Dig, Axiom Verge

Call me biased towards the classics, but at least the tiers are labelled appropriately! I know I'm missing a bunch of staples - the majority of those are either games that I haven't played in a long time, games that I didn't stick with long enough, or games that I plan on getting round to at some point.

Here's a random metroidvania tier list from me:

A (Hit all the right notes for me and left a strong impression) - Ori 1 & 2, Afterimage, Metroid Zero Mission, Ender Lilies, Metroid Dread, SteamWorld Dig 2

I just started Afterimage yesterday and it's really good so far! Controls well, looks gorgeous, and the exploration/map design is pretty much exactly the way I like it in a metroidvania where it feels like I could just get lost for ages trying to fully check out an area (and seeing lots of areas I know I'll have to revisit with overworld upgrades). Looking forward to seeing where it goes. I hear it's a long one.

Yeah it's a long one. I feel the story goes to much more interesting places than people seem to give it credit for, especially by the end, but I'll leave it to you to judge that for yourself. Exploration is definitely its strong point - almost felt a little like playing BOTW in how you can get side-tracked through different places while exploring an area; a "before you know it you've already been playing for 3 hours" type of game. Hope you end up liking it as much as I did!

Also not sure if you're playing on Switch or somewhere else, but it definitely runs better in handheld mode if you are and that's something you particularly care about.

Onwards!
I just finished yesterday and really I don't think it qualifies as a metrodivania, it's just really a hack and slash. Overall find it the same as you mentioned, but I thought the final boss was very easy since you can spam tornado and keep using elixirs which don't have cool down constantly. Went down really quick.

More people need to play SteamWorld Dig 2
