Discussion Final Fantasy VII Rebirth developer update (with Summer Game Fest Trailer)

Booooo. That's just no fun. Remember when RPGs specifically had really important bosses and big cutscenes/story beats at the end of discs? I kind of miss that in a weird way. One of those things lost to time, although it still happened occasionally (I remember Tales of Symphonia being two discs on Gamecube, which was kind of wild)
When I played the Chrono Cross remaster last year I kept wondering what they’d do when the disc swap happens…and it just kept going and I just felt like “oh…”

I have some disc swap game replays in my near-ish future with Tales of Symphonia and Final Fantasy IX, so I’m looking forward to reliving those days soonish haha.

FF8, FF9, and Legend of Dragoon all come to mind when I think of 'big bombastic end-of-disc' moments. They were paced and directed almost like a big climactic moment in a book that was at the end of a chapter, and you immediately went "Whoa, I have to see what happens next!" and turned the page to keep reading. Fun stuff.

Yup I remember FF8 and FF9’s clearly being rad. I know enjoyed Legend of Dragoon, but I don’t think I ever actually beat it. I never really heard the reception to it, but if the PS5 version is good I plan to replay it there. I got it for free since I had the PS3 version.

On the opposite end, the funniest disc transition I ever had was Star Ocean 4 where you are exploring a planet and enter a random cave expecting the next zone, but it prompted the most unexpected and whatever disc transition lol.
