StarTopic Future Nintendo Hardware & Technology Speculation & Discussion |ST| (New Staff Post, Please read)

Technically very possible, the only question is if touch input will work then.
Indeed. Some games might run into that. And UI scaling could be another potential issue I think. But something like a system-level flag might work where devs can opt to set it and then the game renders as a docked mode game.

At least as an option this would be good for better IQ, but having it run in portable mode would also give more battery life.
I can see both things been desirable.
True, but even running in docked mode compatibility shouldn't be too much work for handheld mode. It'll be something like 393 GFLOPS vs. 1.2-2.0 TFLOPS, so a ginormous differential - bigger than XBOX One X to XBOX Series X, for example. So there should still be sufficient battery life in this scenario.

Even better: make the system-level BC flag user-editable (when the devs enabled it) so that the user can choose for a lower portable back compatible version in exchange for longer battery life.

Good Idea.

I could see them doing a "Battery Saver" mode but not something as specific as that.

Wish I could read the article.

Was this the screen that Sharp was saying they’d been partnering with a company on development for a while?

Sharp is working with an unnamed company on the development of a new gaming console since the R&D stage and that it plans to launch pilot LCD-panel production lines for the device this fiscal year.

The fiscal year timeframe doesn’t line up, but dates could have shifted.

Edit: Managed to read it. Seems they bring it up as well. I wonder if there’s anything to be gleaned from being involved in R&D. I perhaps falsely assumed screen sourcing was a more superficial aspect

Right, that battery saver mode would do the same thing, just without making the user aware of what is happening. That is, if the dev enabled the docked BC flag, then battery saver mode will run in portable mode while non-saver mode will run in docked mode. If the flag was not set by the dev, then both saver and non-saver mode run in portable mode.

Any game that is aware enough of the difference to set a flag would be able to just adjust the resolution for itself.

I swear to God, can people stop posting important Switch 2 information in times when UK folk have to go to sleep. I want news as well, can you stop waiting until I've gone to sleep.

Anyway, 8-inch screen is really cool and, even if doesn't mean we're getting HDR or not, it does likely mean we're getting a bigger dock and other funky stuff to complement the comically big screen. We're getting a screen bigger than the Steam Deck's 7/7.4 inch display for the base and OLED models. The fact we've got a credible analyst on our story means that shit is starting to happen.

Welcome to Act 3 my lads!

True. But the goal would to minimise the amount of work needed to bring out better visuals in BC, so reusing docked mode by way of a flag may be done easier and without as much QA work than going back and adjusting the code internally to adopt to the system in a more intricate manner.

I feel with you.

No OLED is a bit sad. I use the Switch primarily as a handheld and got used to the better screen. But if this is a way to save on costs I get it and I rather want to have this next console to have more RAM and better internals. They can always add OLED, but not make the console more powerful. Nintendo will likely never really drop the price of Switch 2, so if you want to switch to OLED when it launches two years later, you can still buy the LCD version around launch and sell it later at a relativly good price. So from a consumer perspective it's honestly not that much of an inconvenience.

That probably wouldn't be meaningfully simpler. Fake docked mode doesn't really avoid creating QA work, it just makes different work.

I think most developers are probably just going to prefer just being able to set different resolution targets. It's a more complete and elegant solution.

It's gonna feel really weird once this thread finally closes in the next few months. Wasn't this one of the first threads every created for the site? It's definitely the longest running.
Yes because if i remember correctly ResetEra didnt want a speculation thread in fears of it turning out how WUST did back on NeoGaf years ago, so everyone migrated over here for all the crazy speculation goodness

Why should it close? Future Nintendo Hardware includes also Switch 3 and beyond.
It would be better just to start a new thread for that when rumors start flying again in 2027 or so. Even if we keep this thread around, it'll be functionally dead for years anyways.

I'm still a baby when it comes to Nintendo speculation lol. What is WUST?

Alright, fair enough. If it doesn't make it easier, then it's not a useful idea.

I just had a vision, a flat rectangle with a slot for chonky 8 inch switch 2. Fits in like a modern version of a n64 cartridge. The screen sits high enough above the slot that it can display other things. Like ammo count or health, or the time.

The thing is with WUST was our expectations were so over the top being the first HD Nintendo console, and a lot of fake insiders leaking a bunch of fake shit.

Wii U Speculation Thread, which was a huge thing back in 2011-2012: look it up on GAF; it's truly a wild ride.

literally the only reason I want this thread to cease to continue is an announcement at this point. we have all been waiting for years for this thing to be announced or more concrete info from Nintendo itself

though I suspect we will not be waiting much longer if this really does open the floodgates wide enough

Speaking of a potential Switch 3 though, I couldn’t be bothered with UHD handheld gaming whatsoever and would prefer a deeper focus on CPU and GPU functionality and improved ray/path tracing and character AI as well as physics. bumping up the docked output resolution beyond 4K just feels like a waste of resources to me.

Or maybe they should just come up with a concept that is different from the handheld-console hybrid. Though I cannot be sure as to what that might be at this point in time.

They‘ll probably crank up screen resolution to 1200-1440p while docked mode will technically support 8K but it won’t be used much.

I’m think is difficult to said now what Switch 3 will have, for sure AI&ML will go even very further what we can’t imagine, same with DLSS and Full RT, GPU architecture if Blackwell aka 5000 is Late 2024/Early 2025 then series 6000 will be Late 2027/Early 2028 and Switch 3 will be most likely based on 6000 series

With some features of 7000 series. Wonder how long the pattern‘ll hold up.

or maybe will be fully based on 7000 series also node TSMC 1.4nm is most likely, Jensen back in 2017 said that he see Nvidia cooperation with Nintendo for over 20 years, Also Switch 3 will also certainly based on Nvidia own ARM CPU beacuse yeah like Reuters report both Nvidia and AMD hard work on their own ARM CPUs series and are expected to release first in 2025

I’ve speculated that the PlayStation Portal’s using Sharp’s custom LCD display as shown below.
[…]
And Spawn Wave’s PlayStation Portal also has a 80FHM6613 display.
If 80FHM6613 is indeed the model number of PS Portal’s display panel, it is unlikely to be a Sharp product. Even though in the past Sharp used some incomprehensible model numbers, such as LS0ZDC0174 (5.5 inch) and LJ0DAS0022 (6.2 inch), their current model numbers are very consistent. For examples:

LS058C0011 (5.8 inch)
LQ064X3LW02 (6.4 inch)
LX065A1BB04 (6.5 inch)

So unless the model number is a fully custom one to obscure its origin, the PlayStation Portal doesn’t seem to be equipped with a Sharp LCD panel.

Not only was it one of the first, but it's technically even older than Fami itself depending on how you look at it 😅

Not quite. The reason everyone migrated here was a whole other thing, completely unrelated to speculation. This thread actually did exist on ResetEra first, but when a bunch of Era regulars left to form Famiboards the thread was rebooted (remastered?) over here.

Hip hip hooray, happy Bloomberg report day!

I haven't been here in a hot minute but hasn't going back to an LCD screen rather than sticking with the OLED screen been reported and/or rumored for quite some time now? I think going with an OLED screen at launch would crank up the price to something Nintendo wouldn't want to sell at, especially considering the current state of ballooning prices around the world.

Here's what an 8 inch screen looks like:
