News Sakurai starts his own youtube Channel "Masahiro Sakurai on Creating Games."

I didn't realize they had even LESS space to work with than Smash 4 and still got everything in

that is some insane compression skills

It does help that the scope wasn't as big as Smash 4 (No Trophies, character customizations, various extra modes, etc.)

But yeah it was a big undertaking regardless.

A new Smash is 100% being developed rn lol.
The last game sold 30 million copies, and a new game is most likely a big drive for people to subscribe to their online membership. Talks were most likely happening right after Sora was finished.

I wouldn't say having 89 characters and over 100 stages is a smaller scope. Most of the team thought he was insane when it was first proposed

then why does sakurai keep saying that he doesn't know what the next smash game will be

He basically does this with every smash and references it in the video even that it's an impossible task he manages.

https://nintendoeverything.com/sakurai-change-of-direction-may-be-needed-for-next-smash-bros/

“It isn’t a matter of ‘if the next game has 50 characters, that’ll be enough.’ There is a certain charm to games that have huge casts of playable characters, but they tend to have issues with game balance and it becomes very difficult to fine-tune each character and have them all feel distinctive…. In terms of quantity, we’ve probably already reached the limit of what’s feasible. I think a change of direction may be what’s needed.”

Like the above is what he said before Smash Wii U/3DS was even released.

That being said I don't expect the next Smash until the middle of the next console's lifecycle like year 3 or 4.

"Look at all my major past accomplishments, each one I thought were more insurmountable than the last, yet here's how we miraculously managed to pull them all off in the end. Anyway, bringing back Kid Icarus Uprising? Another Smash Bros. game that can somehow follow up on Ultimate? Now that's truly impossible, unthinkable for reals this time. I'm completely in the dark as to what the future holds for Smash. Oh and here's the story of that one time Nintendo announced a new Smash completely without my prior knowledge."

It's feasible that this man is actually being totally honest, but I know how his ego works at this point, I can not help but feel like it's all building to something.

Sakurai was playing dumb about Ultimate after Smash 4 even though he was already working on it at the time. Can't take anything he says on that front at face value

If he's working on a new Smash, he's not going to break NDA on his Youtube channel to confirm it. If he isn't, he probably is also not going to risk saying anything that could jeopardize the possibility of doing it in the future either.

I don't think we can glean anything from any of this, basically.

Spoiler culture is one thing sure, but it's very much a simplified take on the issue. For one, Smash Bros. isn't a story driven game, so it's easier to accept a compromise like this. On top of that, Smash Bros. budgets are already crazy so instead of putting that money toward prolonged narrative cutscenes that are fairly limiting, it's probably wiser to spend that instead on these fighter reveal trailers that aren't limited to a cohesive narrative and can tell their own crossover stories with humor and drama. SSE was also extremely difficult to put together; they had to construct a narrative with 30+ protagonists, multiple of which had to be awkwardly forced into the plot after the fact since they were late additions into the game or almost didn't make the cut. Not only that but a lot of work on the game was already outsourced, which requires insane amounts of coordination. Nowadays Smash has roster counts going into the 80+ range, no one is insane enough to tackle that kind of feat.

Also Subspace was kind of shit so if it's one or the other I'll take the fighter reveal trailers.

I don't miss Subspace Emissary one bit; It dragged for far too long and not even the cutscenes were "reward" enough to get me engaged.

They investing on CG trailers were the best decision;

You don't need to include every character in the single player though, just have a story mode focused on 10-15 characters.

Mario
Sonic
Peach
Pikachu
Link
Zelda
Ganondorf
Bowser
Mewtwo
Pit
Palutena

Ganondorf/Bowswer/Mewtwo are the villains, Pit/Palutena/Sonic/Zelda do the talking, the others do the reacting and cool stuff needed.

Sounds like shit. If I play a crossover game that has a storyline in it, I'd expect my favorite characters to be properly represented, not this pick-and-mix solution.

Really, I believe that man this time, enough is enough. He did this for ages and his face froze in time.

But if this all still somehow leads to "surprise, surprise! Here's a new Smash anyway with even more content!

I'll just happily slap myself out of sheer disbelief and excitement

Sakurai: (talking technical nitty-gritty)
Also Sakurai: Pyra's smile has to be PERFECT

Occasionally, while Nintendo has been developing new hardware, they've asked me to make suggestions about possible functionality. Since the GameCube's development and my time designing Smash Bros Melee, There is a suggestion I've made several times regarding the controller.
I want a scroll wheel.
...Damn, I kinda want that now lol

...Damn, I kinda want that now lol

Im preaching the gospel since 8 years or so. A scrolweel instead of a shoulder button would be nice. Can be configured to work as a standard press on scroll for every turn, or be pressed (like a mouse button). Great for Menüs, distinct selections, and if implementing something like Mx masters series from Logitech it could be used for so many scenarios. Just think about really fast and easy weapon switching on the fly without needing to move your thingers from stick and buttons.

That's a shockingly low effort explanation ob versioning systems.

Media files are mostly blocked, text/code files can be merged that way, and it usually prompts you to check the merge and do changes, it never just pops back to old versions.
Then there are 2 philosophies: mono repository on one server and you just get and lock the files that you work on,
Or distributed repositories where you check out the origin, make a branch, and later when you're ready merge the branch. (Or in some demo builds Abandon it after the showcase)
I guess the game industry uses a mix...?

he confirms in this one that he is "still creating games for the time being." idk what the Time Being is but it must love video games. I hope it's gotten its fill of smash bros games since it'd be nice if Sakurai is working on something else again

It's definitely the next Smash; no room for any other interpretation, imo.

That plus the Bandai NAMCO hirings, are evidence enough that the next game already entered in production earlier this year.

Sakurai left a YT community note stating that he is going to wrap up the channel later this year.

Here’s a screenshot to confirm. It’s been a good run! 🫡

Tbh if he is going to announce anything in his channel, is probably just going to be a vague "I'm working on a new game" or something of that style.

In one of his first video's, there was a mention of Next Game To Be Determined after he showed Ultimate on his timeline video.

I do think it's gonna be a Switch 2 titel, and yes, it can be Smash, but I think it can be a Kid Icarus Uprising remake aswell I think.

Yeah, no way Nintendo will allow him make the announcement through his channel lol

Especially considering the high likelihood of being a new Smash game; -- Maybe he will be able to talk about it AFTER Nintendo makes it formal, but before that, I'm not expecting not even a hint.

while he doesn't explain the full backstory, Sakurai brings up an interesting tidbit about how Street Fighter 2 handled sprite flipping by ensuring each character was perfectly symmetrical. noting how Dee Jay's pants are labeled with the word "MAXIMUM" due to it looking the same when rotated.
his character designer, James Goddard, notably explained in an interview that his original design featured the word "MANTIS". which was changed as the N and S would appear flipped whenever he turned around.
"I had just seen 'King of the Kickboxers' with Billy Blanks and I just thought that a really kick-ass black character would be awesome, instead of someone who was more negative, which is what you tended to see from the Japanese back in those days. So the idea of a leading black character was really cool to me. Even though Billy Blanks' character in 'King of the Kickboxers' was this really nasty guy, I just thought, "man, this guy is awesome!" His build and look, I just thought that it would make a great character --high-flying, crazy kicks... I mean, you have to remember, this was Billy Blanks pre-'Tae Bo.' He was so bad-ass, and I mean, he still is, but who would've thought that he'd end up in yellow tights with a bunch of ladies doing kickboxing moves and losing weight? Good thing that wasn't out yet or I don't think they would've went for DeeJay."

The process wasn't exactly the fastest. "I drew a sketch, and sent it over to them, and I believe [series planner Akira "Akiman" Yasuda] saw it and liked the idea. I sent him a movie clip also, which was a lot more difficult back in those days; you had to copy a VHS tape and Fed Ex it, since there were no digital transfers. We came up with the idea that he was Jamaican, and he was a fun-loving guy who was trying to jump-start his music career while kicking a lot of ass. Nothing brilliant, I just wanted to have a positive, fun character...After looking at it, we decided that "Mantis" wasn't going to work down the side of his pants, so we opted for "Maximum." That's pretty much the creation of Dee Jay."
