It’s not in the poll but I expect this year:
  • Price increase or a new subscription tier is introduced or some sort of pricing / structure shakeup in general
  • TG-16 NSO app
  • Pokémon Gen 1 & 2 after April (unless they sell them separately in the eShop… which… now that I think about is probably going to be the route they take since they’ll need a way to transfer the saves to Home)
  • Donkey Kong ‘94 to coincide with Mario vs. DK in February
  • We still don’t get border options like with the Minis 😭
I would still love to see Super Game Boy (2) added as an option to the GB emulator but I highly doubt they’ll ever do it which pains me as someone who used that a ton as a kid
I agree with this, but I think Nintendo will have to do more with the sub to justify any price increase. There was outcry in the US especially over the premium tier, and while I'd love to see TG-16 games on the service, that addition alone doesn't really justify any upwards price movement. Plus, with subscription growth naturally slowing, they're going to have to be careful where they go with pricing in the future.

Personally I think we'll see something like an expansion of the NSO Game Trials; temporary access to certain older Switch games as part of your subscription. Perhaps we might see more subscription exclusive software - it's a shame Nintendo and their studios don't do more download only titles because they would be a natural addition. Or even something like further Hagi Wii/GC ports along the lines of Pikmin 1 and 2 join NSO; but I could see Nintendo wanting that stuff on the eShop, too.

DK 94 in February would be perfect, too. Good shout! I hope Nintendo are listening.

I imagine if they did a reset like that they would lose a not insignificant amount of their subscription base. Sure it’s for online play primarily but the retro collection is one of the better deals in gaming right now (assuming you haven’t played them before aren’t a jerk about retro).

Actually, a price increase in the subscription would be an interesting discussion point. What value could be added at this point to justify the cost? More first party consoles are out of the running (unless anyone stands by DS/Gamecube/Virtual Boy/Game and Watch being added before 2026), the Gameboy and Gameboy Advance are the only systems still with a substantial library left to add games, and the N64 better be functionally complete by the end of this year with Super Smash Bros, Banjo Tooie, DK64, DKR and a couple other Rare games in its library (...I won't hold my breath but also maybe the MK Trilogy too if we now have the 18+ N64 app) that the only additions in 2025 and beyond are weird licensed games and maintaining those licenses so they don't lapse. Based on that earlier video they did about reviving JSR, Golden Axe, Shinobi, Crazy Taxi and SoR I think Sega is on the same wavelength as Nintendo that their games from Dreamcast could be brought back for increased revenue, so that might only leave the Master System, 32X and Sega CD add-ons for Megadrive/Genesis, or the Saturn from Sega's side.

PC Engine/TG-16 like others suggest could be added, but is their value enough to justify being included only in the Expansion Pass despite the licensing cost? Other consoles from the fifth generation and earlier include 3DO, Atari Jaguar and 7800, Philips CD-i, SNK Neo Geo, and anything older probably has irregular control inputs that can't be easily adapted to modern controllers (Magnavox Odyssey, Mattel's Intellivision, Colecovision, MB Vectrex, etc.)

If Nintendo is not gonna give away free modern games for subscribers like Sony/MS/EGS by keeping subscription costs low, then they really have to step up their Game Trials. At the very least monthly, but ideally twice a month (one week for a game, a week break with the sale extended, then cycle again). They need to be announced with regular cadence at a global scale (the first business day of each month), rather than announcing them weeks apart for each region of Japan, Europe, and the Americas.

  • Price increase: Meh. Nintendo is a fan of set fixed prices imo, they don't really raise prices that much, it gives wrong vibes. They would rather add a new tier instead.
  • TG-16 NSO: probably for the Expansion Pack as is
  • Pokémon Gen 1 & 2: If they do it for NSO, probably a seperate Pokémon app at this point lol
  • DK94: If only
  • SGB support: I think NERD would have to seperate save states and stuff or keep the settings per save state or something it would be a mess

Definitely think a Pokémon app is pretty likely now that they're fine just doing extra apps for specific things like the 18+ games. The Pokémon games would likely have specific limitations as well, forbidding things like rewind and save states, so putting that all in its own app just kind of works. Could also be a way to lock Pokémon to NSO+ instead of letting basic tier play gen 1 and 2 on the GameBoy app. The only remaining concern really is with stuff like Stadium connectivity, which they don't have to do... it would just be very cool.

For other consoles, Nintendo could reasonably corner the market on readily available classic games outside Sony, so I kind of expect them to add more as time goes on. That'd be the main value of getting them, rather than just having some more games. Even if Neo Geo and other arcade games are unlikely due to them being sold individually via Arcade Archives, TG-16, Master System, and maybe Commodore 64 (and other retro PC types that can use a controller? Amiga?) to round out the old Wii eShop line-up would be great.

Also agreed that there's no doubt SEGA's in a similar mindset, with not only the "New Era" being classic (and, notably, Dreamcast) focused but Yosuke Okunari still talking about continuing work on reviving old SEGA hardware and titles. Though Saturn won the buyer's poll for "next Mini" that fans wanted, Dreamcast games would probably be some "brand synergy" or whatever if DC emulation happened first alongside the planned revivals. Sure would be cool to have proper ports of the Sonic Adventure games available instead of the progressively awful ports that have been plaguing the games since "DX," and Chu Chu Rocket, Space Channel 5, and Jet Set Radio would obviously benefit from having their DC versions available rather than (or in addition to) their GBA ones. Shame internet features will probably be left out though. RIP Moon Chao.

I wish! It would be sick to have an actual PC-Engine NSO controller replica - It apparently is a meh controller though - but this is Konami who we're talking about.
Nintendo would be the manufacturer for a PC-E/TG16 NSO controller, as they made the Genesis/Mega Drive controllers, so QC wouldn‘t be an issue. Also, Konami didn’t make the original PC-E/TG16 hardware, that’d be NEC. Konami just owns it all now once NEC divested their ownership of all game stuff to Hudson, who was acquired by Konami years after the fact.

I do think we're gonna get virtual boy eventually. Yeah the library is small, but it has rarity going for it. None of those game have been availed in years and the few 3rd party games Nintendo could get for a song.

Virtual Boy would have been perfect with Labo VR…maybe they will release an NSO “controller” that’s just a labo VB casing (please let this happen).

As long as they let me play in black & white because I ain't playing in red. That said I'd be down for a VB controller with two D-pads and almost GameCube style

The sprite work on VB titles like Wario Land looks great in B&W based on Jeremy Parish's coverage of the system where they did some wizardry to remove the red since YT's compression was absolutely mangling it unaltered

There may not be much on the Virtual Boy, but even the little bit is worth making accessible for the public. Itd be a nice feature.

I'm still in camp if they happen, they're not in any nso sub and are instead tied to the already otherwise absurdly overpriced Pokémon home sub. (Seriously, how they get away with charging what is probably by orders of magnitude the most expensive cloud storage in any consumer space is as impressive as it is frustrating). Might actually finally give that subscription some real value.

Wario Land VB, Mario Clash, Mario Tennis, Teleroboxer, Innsmouth No Yakata, Nester's Funky Bowling, Galactic Pinball, Vertical Force, Panic Bomber, Space Squash, and Jack Bros all have some value and should be preserved. I'll also throw out that Red Alarm might be worth playing if the graphics were redone in a way that it was clear what was an obstacle and what wasn't.

If they ever add Virtual Boy on NSO, they should dump the entire 1st Party library (and maybe the few 3rd Parties they could get like Panic Bomber and Jack Bros.) in a single blow... This is not something they can stretch out with dripfeed;

And I really hope they do VB on NSO, even without the 3D effect, those games should be accessible for the curious.

I definitely think Nintendo should tie their curiosities into NSO some way, preferably as bonus, all-in-one apps rather than as apps with ongoing support. Certainly, for Virtual Boy, that seems the only viable way of doing it.

I'd like them do something for Game & Watch: perhaps redevelop the games as an NSO-only collection with online features (emulation would obviously not be on the cards here given how these devices worked). There's a big swathe of Nintendo's history that's lost here, even if the handful of reissued special editions shows Nintendo haven't forgotten this range entirely (I have all three reissued Game & Watch consoles, though I can't remember where I left the Ball device). The Game & Watch app could be updated with new mini-games every few months, updated versions of the old hardware range; and maybe even Game & Watch style interpretations of more modern titles.

And, finally, finding a way to bring back Satellaview and N64 DD games would be grand. Again, this stuff is lost to history, and it's difficult to see how else it could come back. Retro curiosities wouldn't have an enormous market, but they would be fun bonuses to have.

I'd say Pokémon Mini games as well, but if TPC is already being weird on their basic mainline games, I can't imagine they even thinking on working on a dedicated NSO app for that little curio.

The Virtual Boy lineup is definitely a "here is everything at once" move.
Make each VB release the direct closer for the life of the Switch 2. Everyone will be on pins and needles to see what VB masterpiece Nintendo red's all over our screens.

I hope Nintendo kick in with NSO updates soon. We've got a couple of confirmed GBA releases to launch, and we're overdue for Mega Drive. Plus, they'd done GB drops for a regular months so I hope they carry on there soon - more Wario Land, Donkey Kong 94, and Kid Icarus: Of Myths & Monsters at the top of my list. And, of course, we need some idea of what could be coming to N64, rather than just a Mystery Box.

Edit - also, let SNES get some love. 10 months since it got an update.

I’m still sort of shocked that they haven’t even bothered to put Marvelous on NSO in Japan. Like that should be an easy one right?

Virtual Boy can honestly be either a NSO app or a full collection sold once and maybe free for use on NSO.
That said it can kind of depend how many games they can put on there as there are a few third parties too.

For G&W: You'd be surprised, but MAME actually emulates them. They contain a Sharp SM510 CPU series inside them with embedded ROM and these ROMs have been extracted for the most part, and Nintendo has the Game & Watch artworks which Sakurai has shown off, which are either the originals, or scans of the panels... So it might not be impossible to actually make an emulation core out of those. That said as much as I like NSO, these fits the mobile more, they should be on both.

And then Satellaview... if only. It's not even too hard to emulate, it's just not much compared to the work required to do SuperFX emulation...
But I could see them hacking the BS-X BIOS extensively to make sure games just boot, no menuing required.

For 64DD... I don't know what they were thinking in the Wii U days to experiment with 64DD emulation and not finish it. Were they stuck about transposing the 64DD master format to something that can be more easily emulated or something? They could also just hack the 64DD code to avoid a lot of calculations but I just don't get why they didn't finish it, only to visibly test further using fanmade 64DD to N64 ROM ports of them at one point... At least we know Nintendo kept the 64DD games with actual evidence, but god what a missed opportunity with F-Zero X Expansion Kit at least...

Yes, please. SNES needs more love, there's still a lot to do.

They took way too long to put Mysterious Murasame Castle at all. Way way too long.

I THINK there's an official Pokémon Mini emulator too within Pokémon Channel on the GameCube...
Yep. Also includes an unreleased title in it (Snorlax's Lunch Time).

I forgot to mention but I still don't know why they bothered to emulate the SNES Mouse and SNES Multitap only to not use them at all.
Clearly the use of those is not a problem since GB NSO can support extra inputs like accelerometer.

What are the vibes people are feeling? I think this week is the earliest we could see an update, but I could just as easily lean towards NES/SNES/GB update for next week and save the Expansion Pass stuff for an NSO roadmap in the Direct.

tbh my vibes are “Genesis is done”

Next week is Another Code Recollection so I don’t think they’re gonna announce a GBA game for next week but I could see Golden Sun (or some other GBA game) being out before the end of the month. Maybe this is a NES/GB/SNES drop week?

They’ll squeak out GBA updates until the Feb direct and that’ll be that. Probably another GB/GBA roadmap then and that’ll be it until switch 2 with the occasional NES-GB drop.

Genesis I see as happening again whenever M2 wants to. It seems clear they’re busy with something else and Sega sets the release with that Genesis app, so maybe they’re too busy on Toaplan stuff to make it a priority. (Or doing PC Engine in secret for next month which i doubt it)

Were there any other GBA games in that first lineup that we’re still waiting on?

The shovelware F-ZERO GBA game Maximum Velocity. Not GP Legend or Climax sadly (the really fun and cool ones)

Vibes are good. NSO updates are easy and don’t require a Direct to happen.

Please just give me Golden Sun already. I choked down 25 hours of Sea of Stars.

ohhh baby I HOPE
The shovelware F-ZERO GBA game Maximum Velocity.
Oooh that’s harsh (but fair)

Climax is one I’d LOVE to play. Never did though I do know the soundtrack’s an all-timer.

All that’s left is Golden Sun and some F-Zero game.
I bet we get at least one (probably Golden Sun!) before the end of the month

I need them to finish the current roadmap so I can get a new one with Lost Age and Sacred Stones on it.

And then those two will be released in 2025.

I have both carts within arm's reach to boot.

Honestly there was a point where I thought we might not get NES or SNES games anymore but then they started adding them again after like half of a year.

You’re right, but the Genesis additions were on a pretty solid release rhythm. But they‘ve missed like 2-3 Genesis release windows now.

If they don't add any in the next 6 months, I'm going to have to join you in giving up hope on Genesis

Nintendo's just weird when it comes to NSO updates. Trying to figure out any kind of pattern or reach some kind of conclusion about why a system/game has or hasn't been updated is like throwing darts at a spinning board blindfolded. We haven't had an SNES game longer than we haven't had a Genesis or GBA title. So far the only Wario Land game uploaded to NSO is the 3rd one. They got emulation working for Kirby's Tilt N Tumble gryo sensor but won't allow people to make use of memory card or rumble pack on n64.

Just embrace chaos and accept Nintendo is just randomly throwing stuff out.

Wish I could, but I can't embrace chaos on this. The amount of money they're asking for these subs, the least they could do is at least show some kind of vague plan that has a regular cadence of updates. Otherwise why shouldn't I just let it lapse?

I like the games but the service is so bad. Just drop the damn games! No one is going to put off a retail release because we got bonanza bros and phantasy star III. And they apparently are giving Sega a premium cut from this! And don’t get me started on the GB games, of which they should be dropping 10 at a time.

I don’t think we get anything for a while since we had 3 N64 games in December.

Pokemon Picross original GBC game first ever release via NSO let's goooo
And Lunar Chase, and Sutte Hakkun GB.

By the way I noticed the new NSO retro game mission for the points

I took the opportunity to complain about the lack of French version (also include German, Nintendo, I didn't mention it but it goes without saying) because oh my fucking god WHY AFTER SO MANY YEARS IT'S STILL NOT THERE
THERE'S NO VALID EXCUSE HERE

Nope, not on NES and SNES. Never.
If some games have additional languages it's purely because the NA version had english and french (like DKC2 & 3). But I guess who cares about german...

Is this the year we get the pokemon games in NSO? Makes sense. Just have to remove the ability to save state and rewind to “preserve the integrity of the experience” or whatever bullshit excuse they will use.

Just last week I was playing Crystal Legacy, and to catch Suicune I got it down to red health, made a save state, and chucked an ultra ball. If it failed, reload the save state. 😅

Why buy 50 ultra balls when one will do the trick? 🫠

Hey now. Be fair to Maximum Velocity, it has better track design than SNES/99 and has far more content than 15 tracks with quite a few repeats.
Does look like shit though.
