I was actually thinking this myself lol

I love how I went from having like no new SRPGS to drowning in them the past two or so years, keep them coming

Hell yeah, was hoping Vanillaware would do a game like this one day. I'm loving the SRPG renaissance we are getting (and the vast majority of them are so high quality too).

Needless to say but I'm definitely in.

Unicorn Overlord goes kind of hard as a title as well, not gonna lie.

Im...confused. It is a Vanilaware game, sure. but the characters look more "general anime" then usually it feels like, and it is positioned as the "rebirth" of tactical RPGs... not like Diofield Chronicles, Fire Emblem, Triangle Strategies or Ogre Battle Reborn aren't games from the last...3 years, with FFT being rumored.

I'll keep track of it.

Oh, by the way, wheres Muramasa / Odin Sphere?

The whole "rebirth" slogan is just marketing, but I am interested in seeing how all the gameplay elements tie into each other.

As for your question I think it's only a matter of time until we see Odin Sphere Leifthrasir and, possibly, Dragon's Crown on the Switch now that Atlus and Vanillaware have seen some success with 13 Sentinels and are releasing this simultaneously with the other consoles. As for Muramasa Rebirth, that's up to Marvelous.

The game looks awesome and will prob be a day 1 purchase from me.

That being said, I could help but laugh out loud when the narration went from the friendly sounding Nintendo voiceover to the more serious, deep-voiced narrator and then hearing him end the trailer with a serious sounding "UNICORN OVERLORD"

Most interesting game of the Direct. We might have an all timer right there.

Also love how they casually snobbed Triangle Strategy during its own publisher event lol

The tag line of "rebirth of tactical fantasy RPG" is pretty funny given all the tactics games being released lately. I know its not an attack, but it feels like calling out Square given they have been releasing a few already lol.
I admire the confidence

I agree on both counts. The game looks great, but how the hell did they come up with "Unicorn Overlord" as the title? It just sounds wacky lol.

Highlight of the Direct for me. I'm so happy that Vanillaware is fully embracing the Switch. I always felt that their games feel right at home on a portable device. And being a Tactical RPG too? Inject straight into my veins.

Looks really cool, probably the highlight as far as new new games revealed during the Direct.

That name though… woof. One thing the Switch should be remembered for is starting this trend of word salad names for jrpgs.

I was kinda underwhelmed by this in the Direct for whatever reason but I watched the trailer a couple more times and it's really grown on me

seems like it has a ton of gameplay systems in it

It hadn't occurred to me until I was watching NVC stream the Direct, but as Peer pointed out... this has a ton of Ogre Battle in it, doesn't it? I'm admittedly not very well versed in that series but it definitely has some of that look to it and how things flow

Looks cool I guess. My favorite game from them is Dragon's Crown...a sequel to that would be much preferred...

This started well before Switch (shoutout to Infinite Undiscovery!)

It's kinda funny how Vanillaware doesn't exactly specialize in any one thing other than breathtaking art, every one of their games is a different genre from the last, and they somewhat invent their own new micro-genre within it each time. I'm admittedly getting fatigue from so many of these type of games flooding my backlog, but this one pulls me in on another level, because with Vanillaware you're always being treated to a feast for the senses even during the parts of a long game that might drag.

Looks like it will come to the West

"The rebirth of tactical fantasy RPGs" LMFAO

And here I was thinking that with 13 Sentinels Vanillaware, wait...

This is too hot of a take. Don't wanna get dog piled so I'll just leave the thread I guess ;P

In addition to being marketing language, this game appears to be the successor to Ogre Battle 64. I interpreted that wording to be them saying "hey, I know we don't have the rights that that other IP that this totally looks like....but we won't stop you from believing that we've relaunched that series!"

Yeah, it's kind of funny how Atlus used to hold the rights to the Ogre Battle series until Quest was bought out by Square Enix and now they're helping to create a game that could, from the looks of it, easily fit in with that series.

Speaking of Ogre Battle I really hope Tactics Ogre: Reborn was successful because I would love to have a remake of The March of the Black Queen or even a new entry.

Unicorn Overlord?
Did they choose two random words and put them together? I mean it looks fantastic, but that name is terrible.
Diofield Chronicle… Redemption Reapers… Triangle Strategy… Infinite Undiscovery… It does seem like how these things go

I mentioned to a friend last night how great it is they managed to turn this project around so quickly after 13 Sentinels and they reminded me that came out in 2019 😭 which to be fair, 4 years is still pretty good for game projects these days, no shade at all, but I think this was a covid thing where it feels like 13 Sentinels came out like 2 years ago in my mind lol brutal. However, this game looks very cool. I usually suck at real time strategy type stuff so I don't know how much it'll be for me specifically but I love what they're going for!

We got some information about the game, I'll give a quick recap:

- The game was proposed to Atlus in March 2014 but development really began in 2016.
-Over 60 unique characters with various races like humans, angels and beasts.
-Players will be able to rebuild reclaimed towns with gathered materials and train allies. Defeating the ennemy in occupied settlements will grant you access to armorers and provisioners. Big focus on exploration.
-Victory conditions depend on the stage
-"Characters will automatically engage in combat, with adaption and improvisation at the forefront of the experience, as players will need to balance units’ skills and classes."
-3 difficulty modes
-Online mode with PvP confirmed
-Estimated playtime : 50 hours / All sidequests : 100 hours

Unicorn Overlord = Overlord of the Unicorn
Overlord: Someone who exerts great authority, a Lord.
Unicorn: In game Ring of the Unicorn. Inspired by Wagner Ring of Nibelum/Nibelung?

Unicorn Overlord = (The Tale of the) Lord who commands/rule over the (Ring of) Unicorn (power).

Has Vanillaware done this type of top-down perspective before? It looks like they're animating in 8 directions for playable units and 4 directions for enemy generics.

Day 1 for me. I tend to like tactics games, but even if this one doesn't click, I'm sure I'll spend hours just studying the animations...

In the original trailer, it looks like you can have a total of 10 units on the field if the level allows. It looks like each unit can be a batallion of 6, so maybe that's where the 60+ character count come into play.

OMG how it's possible for it to look so good? I can't wait

Muramasa (C'mon Marvelous), Dragon's Crown and Odin Sphere on Switch would be peak. Switch would finally be worthy of the title of Vita sucessor.

I have to admit I now find myself eating my own words.

My first reaction to the game's art style and visuals was way off the mark. It looks good actually.

I guess overexposure to Vanillaware-like art in "less fortunate" games had me too judgmental in a weird way, ahahah.

Definitely interested in the title as of today.

Dunno what "less fortunate" exactly means, but if it's in regard to off putting character designs, then i'm sorry to burst the bubble right now. I think there won't ever be a Vanillaware game without at least a few of those.

I was referring to imitators of the style in the mobile f2p space and outside of it. Overtime that has cheapened the look of you ask me, coupled with Vanillaware arguably doing it again and again with a slight but not huge evolution.

And yeah I've seen the off-putting designs, didn't expect them not to be there. Maybe we get less than the usual? Hopefully anyways.

Edit: I might as well add that I was very mixed on the overworld too. But honestly, it looks fine. I had one hell of a knee jerk reaction back in September.

I think this is my favourite character design they've shown off so far. It's simple, sure – but it works.

Absolutely. It's my most anticipated game next year I think.
