Hoooooooly cow another person who has Cris Tales!! I thought I was alone!

I desperately wanna watch LD stare down a Goomba to assess whether it's worth fighting or not.
and I desperately want you to watch Seinfeld yet you spend time posting about Nintendo toys online. Curious.

I did watch the first season of Seinfeld, actually! I just... haven't gone back to it yet. 😢

Probably the best S1 scene, imo:

Stop vendelaying and watch it.

Maybe I'll run out of Seinfeld things to post about before this damn game reaches me.

Played for 5 hours yesterday.
Thoroughly impressed by how they transplanted the original source material in a way that it looks how one would visualize it in his mind back in the day.
Only small blasmish is stuttering happening sometime.

Mario's "jump" special still has the hidden feature to increase the power the more is used (I maxed it out so I killed Mack with just 2 jumps lol).

EDIT:
Oh, I disagree with who says the added collateral damage to close enemies with timed hits dumb down the difficulty compared the original.
That's not the case, at most it speed up some battle with weaker enemies (think ending in two turns instead of three).
Triple tech may unbalance the game (just got to the Geno part so I'm not sure yet what the true impact will be) however the idea to visualize and give a payout to nailing out the timed hit mechanics, specially for consecutive ones, benefited the flow of the game because it encourages to always use this sub-system even if in the end the battles with normal enemies are repetitive.
The idea to hide more powerful 'normal' enemies within common battle is also smart.
You cannot completely shut off the brain and it encourage you to fight fodder enemies instead to avoid them because the pay out typically contains a frog coin which are useful later on to get some great gears.

Great job on the OP @big lantern ghost !

I’ll be skipping this one, at least for now. I played the SNES original only a few months ago and had a great time with the game. I hope everyone enjoys this release!

I still can't believe we're got such a loving remake of this game. My copy should be ready for pickup in a few hours, and I'm hoping work is really slow today because I am dying to dig into this game.

And great ST @big lantern ghost!

An hour in and beat Mack Claymorton.

Other than the playable cast who all look adorable, the remake is fiendishly good at replicating the vibe of early 3D with detailed enemy models that look strange and goofy. It's not really SMRPG in-line with the modern Mario aesthetic, it feels made with the visuals of its then-contemporary PS1 competition.

The in-game map looks like the kind of thing you'd see in a game manual back in the day. I adore it.

You know that scene in Ratatouille where the tough and jaded food critic tries the ratatouille and is immediately and emotionally transported back in time to happier days?

That is this game for me. Pure nostalgic joy, every second. It’s perfect.

Thank God I preloaded this with Vouchers (Plus, I have a physical copy coming).

I just played an hour or so because work got in the way but man, this brings back so many good memories. I'm pretty sure SMRPG was my first RPG and the combat is just as fluid as I remember. You might think the extra damage for all the enemies would make the game much easier but the move itself is not as easy to pull off and it actually makes the pace of the battles much faster.

Can't wait to keep playing.

Beat Boywer.

Maybe it's due to all my recent SMRPG playthroughs being on the WiiU but the timing for Action Commands has been surprisingly stingy. I still can't get above 12 hits for the Super Jump.

So the flower items I use to increase my BP, are these permanent or should I hold on to these items or something?

They permanently increase your BP, but they also fully restore them on use! It can be handy to keep one or two around for that reason but otherwise yeah, let ‘em rip

The timing is definitely different in this remake. I’m having to unlearn over 25 years of muscle memory.

I'm still early in the game but it doesn't look like the item caps are too restrictive. Most everything I'm carrying has a full cap of ten.

You have no idea how mortifying it was to not complete all 30 hits of the Super Jump challenge in Rose Way.

So, as someone who never played Super Mario RPG and who's first entry is Paper Mario...I kind of feel underwhelmed? It's not the combat, because that's surprisingly keeping me engaged but the "charm" is not really hitting for me. I'm mostly just bored playing through the game.

Funny because I got the opposite feeling when I went from SMRPG to PM (especially the combat).

I've played through the first two star pieces since last night and this morning before work. It feels both familiar but also fresh in all the best ways. I'm itching to keep playing it later.

Also, regarding the first major boss,
I never realized Mack/Claymorton was actually a red armored dude on a sword like a pogo stick. I always saw him as a giant talking sword.

Are there still a bunch of weird, obscure items that are hidden behind ridiculous, unexpected tasks you have to perform? And if so, is there a good list of all these that I can follow if I’m going for 100%?

Yes, this is how it feels to play this again.
Also, the redone soundtrack is fantastic and I am constantly anticipating the next banger.

pretty sure the battle music is dynamic and get more instruments the better your action command combo is

Gonna see how far I can go without equipping armour.

Wish I thought of this years ago. SMRPG's main problem has always been in being too easy.

Well, after reminding myself yesterday that this is the last game I'm buying this year and to savour it...I've racked up four stars 😂 Gonna call it there for now!

Updated impressions:

I could never get into the og when I was a kid, it looked kinda ugly and I remember thinking it was a bootleg game (lol) because Mario wasn't an RPG franchise.

I'll give the remake a try as it looks miles better and has QoL improvements.

Whoa, this looks SO clean. I'm blown away. Is this outputting at a higher resolution than most Switch games? I'm not super knowledgeable on tech, but it feels like it is.

One thing I find off putting is the lack of sounds coming from the characters, playing a Mario without so much as a single ‘wahoo’ just feels weirdly wrong haha.

It's outputting at 1080p which is the same as Smash, Mario Kart, Tropical Freeze, Splatoon 2/3, Kirby, Mario Wonder..
Lots of others run at 900p which is not that far off. Now if you're talking about a lot of the more intense 3rd party games then yeah, absolutely 😅

RIP Mack the knife, we hardly knew ye. It was a much better (if way more obscure) pun than Claymorton, but I’ll live.

Game is great so far! Feels pretty much exactly like the original, which is a plus.

Mario has beef with a 7 years old Toad in this game, what's not to like ?

Mallow holding Mario to prevent him to punch the kid is hilarious lmao
