I'm in Palace 7 in P5R (on hard) and man you get so incredibly overpowered in Royal it's starting to drag lol, it's not engaging. Kind of wish Merciless was a more traditional difficulty above hard because using the fusion system and everything feels pretty pointless right now. Still really enjoying it but it definitely could have been like 20 hours shorter.
P5 needing to be 20-40 hours shorter was how I felt playing the original version, you're playing Royal which tacks on another 20-40 hours of content. GLHF

Nah, I could comfortably have played another 20-30 hours easily. I finished Royal with the plat at 140 hours, and almost immediately started another playthrough because I didn’t want it to end. For me, Royal is the perfect example of adding new content while also streamlining and improving upon what was already there.

Rising anticipation for the new Dragon Quest Monsters had me reminisce about DQ11S, and I still think it is the best "big budget" turn-based RPGs I have played in the last 10 years or so. If it wasn't such a long game, I would love to replay it. I had to take breaks from it during my original playthrough because it just wouldn't end, but I returned to it time and again to eventually finish it, which is rare for me when it comes to games this long.

I still haven't returned to complete all side-quests, though, so maybe I'll do that when the itch gets really bad.

Also, holy shit Square Enix, get on with DQ3 HD-2D already, and please for the love of Goo localise DQX Offline, you incorrigible fools!

The was P4 Golden for me. I really didn't care for P5.

I liked Golden quite a bit, it just didn’t hit the same highs as P5 for me. Probably for a lot of reasons, but especially due to having played P5 first. I’m really interested to see how P3Remake hits, since I’ll be jumping into that one for the first time next year.

I played them in order (3 fes -> 4 golden -> 5). I liked 3 fes, loved 4 golden, and 5 I had to force myself to finish. I can't even say it's bad, but man did the game peak way too early. I think it's all down hill after the first dungeon.

That's a really interesting opinion that I've heard before, so I know you're not an outlier in that - I just always find it odd. For me, the first dungeon is great at setting the game up and getting things going, but it's definitely middle of the pack in terms of the actual dungeon and 'arc' of the game, so to speak. Plus it's just so much more limited from a gameplay perspective - there are tons of things you haven't unlocked yet, and so much you can't do (like go out at night, go to most of the city locations, and so on) that it definitely doesn't feel like a peak to me. My favorite has always been Palace 4 or 6. But I also adore the ending section, too (well, the original ending. I like P5R a lot but I don't think the new ending quite matches the original).

But I could talk about P5 for days, so I'll shut up now, lol. I will say I'm really looking forward to P3Remake so I can finally see what it's about, and get more of a feel for how I like it compared to 4 and 5. I have managed to stay next to blind and know very little going in, so it'll be a fun time.

What helps the first dungeon for me is that the entire cast at that point is impacted by the actions of the villain on a personal level. Some of the later dungeons (3 and 5 in particularly) even the characters who're supposed to be the focus don't have much invested in the going ons. Also for dungeon 2 Yusuke sucks the crew should have just let him get exploited further by his mentor

Dungeon 5 is the low point of the game, no real argument from me there. But while Yusuke gives off a bad first impression (the game is deliberately trying to make you think he's sketchy and can't be trusted at first) once you get to know him he rules so much, he's one of my favorite characters. He and Ryuji are the best male Persona cast members by a mile, IMO. Not that there's a ton of competition there (I hate Teddie and Yosuke with a passion)

Played more Final Fantasy Tactics Advance today and made some great progress. I absolutely have to share I did run into the absolute worst side quest map that I had to retry at least twenty times (many immediately). There were iirc five monsters against your squad of five in a forest map, but there was a gimmick here (which incidentally are fairly rare in this game) as you had to protect an NPC. If the NPC was ever knocked out it was game over, regardless if you could revive them or not. No big deal right?

The immediate red flag right away is that the monster that moves first has a Target All Holy move that strikes characters at a mystery certain level (or multiple of a number if it behaves like other FF games) which immediately kills the NPC. I tried reloading and every time the same monster would use that move right away and immediately end the map. Well ok then, no big deal you just wander around the map and either get a Target All law or a Holy law. In my case, Target All came up first so that’s what I rolled with.

But then came the most insidious part of this map. At the start of the map, Marche says “get back NPC!”, but wouldn’t you know it without fail the NPC will always charge down monsters despite having no way to engage them and the NPC is placed in a way it can be targeted immediately. This is where I had to pull out every dumb trick in the book to try to get this to work out. I tried physically blockading the monsters (at the start and as they moved around) even with my weak / glass cannon units which was a losing a battle because the NPC could walk past my units and inch ever closer to danger. One monster had a range attack that would 9/10 times kill the NPC in one strike while another had an AOE attack. Another still I’d find out had a preemptive re-raise skill which meant I usually had to kill one monster twice. I tried a bunch of status effects on monsters and even breaking the friendly NPCs legs which proved difficult considering that was a low chance of succeeding and I only had two units who could do that and only one at range.

It ultimately came down to a combination of all that and rearranging my starting units locations a few times and getting perfect rolls to have the best start possible and even then it was close as breaking your friends legs wears off quickly. What a truly miserable map. Anyway, I only have five story missions left so I’m very close to finishing.

Played a bit more of Triangle Strategy, got to the second battle from the demo. This game is giving me the problem of too many good units not enough spaces to deploy them. As an example I just got the acrobat Piccoleta, her main gimmick is a skill called decoy, it takes 3tp (in TS you start with 3 and recover 1 each turn, Tp is needed for abilities) which gives you a guest npc version of Picco. Sure the guest is a tad weaker, but having an extra combatant to distract enemies and absorb damage is nuts. Even a character I think is weak (like Benedict) will level up (exp scales to battle difficulty so catching people up is easy) and get a crazy new ability like Now (3tp to make an ally instantly take their next turn) which completely changes my calculus.

I almost don't like it haha, it gives me the worst case of choice paralysis both with who to deploy and who to invest my limited upgrades into.

I seriously have not heard a single thing about Triangle Strategy that didn’t make me want to buy it more.
It works since the game expects you to do new game+. All units you recruit carry over, and to recruit everyone you need to do all 4 endings.

Been playing Pokemon XG (a romhack of XD) and Terranigma.

XG I've bounced off multiple times because it gets a bit overwhelming if you try to play optimally, but I'm grooving a bit better with it now.

Terranigma might be one of my favourite games ever now? It's everything I like about Link's Awakening but turbocharged.

The Blazer trilogy are all incredible. If you've not played Soul Blazer and Illusion of Gaia they should move up your play list.

Decoy rules, it was one of my favorite abilities. Just tossing one out into a big group to buy time and soak damage and other things is so good.

I feel like I'm VERY bad at understanding the battle system in Star Ocean R: The Second Story, but the skill tree/crafting systems are terrifically satisfying. There's a lot of depths to these systems, even if my brain just appreciates seeing the numbers go up.

I think my problem with Star Ocean is that the battle systems are so fast that I don’t feel I really enact anything akin to strategy in them, outside of setting up my strongest options on shortcuts outside of combat. There were so many effects going off onscreen in late game that I couldn’t counter stuff as I could barely see the tells for them.

Happy 2nd anniversary to the RPGs ST! It’s been awesome chatting with you all about RPGs these past two years so let’s keep the good vibes and great discussion going strong :)

I have two other things to post about right now so might as well get them in here. First, it looks like Falcom will be releasing a new Trails game next September in Japan which isn’t surprising since Ys X was this year. I didn’t know the Switch version of Trails Through Daybreak was done internally by Falcom so that’s interesting.

The other thing I want to talk about is I have reached the final maps for Final Fantasy Tactics Advance! I had attempted to just mainline the last maps leading up to the point of no return, but the level gap for the final map became too much to bear there. I had barely survived beating Ritz (which would have been way easier if I realized I only had to take her out lol), but I am eager to wrap this up after 31+ hours. I’ll do the side quests I’ve been neglecting and hopefully power up my main squad before challenging it again.

I had the time and stuck with Final Fantasy Tactics Advance tonight and managed to complete it! One of the maps I played while side questing had a “monster” in a box that essentially you could take out with one shot and otherwise couldn’t move or do anything. I decided to have Marche attack teammates over and over again to force one more level up and had the rest of my party use skills to boost XP so they snuck in some level ups too.

My second round against the first phase of the final boss went poorly, but I reloaded and did one last attempt that proved to be the one as I got two very lucky rolls right at the start that had two enemies crumple immediately. I forgot to mention I did finally get the dual wielding Ninja class weapon for Marche so he became a deadly evasion counter tank and also cemented himself as my best damage dealer. I smoked the last two phases of the boss with him.

Overall I had a great time with the game. Most of the maps were quick breezy fun and the tougher ones regularly proved satisfying to conquer. Leveling up your characters was very satisfying as you learned new moves and came up with cool combos. The law system is kind of annoying, but it does lead to some map variety in the sense certain moves are unavailable for certain maps so you have to mix up your strategy and occasionally bring in reserve units (same for when you send a bunch out on Dispatch missions). The story wasn’t the best, but the big moments were effective enough.

I really enjoyed revisiting Final Fantasy Tactics Advance and one day I definitely want to finally play both the original game and the sequel. I do have both. This was the last RPG in my final Wii U backlog project. I can’t believe I played ten(!) RPGs this year as part of this project all of which I discussed here. DK64 is the last game left for it which I’ll talk about in the Retro ST. I guess the new version of Mario RPG will likely be my next RPG and probably Octopath Traveler II after that. Going to be a while I think until I start my next backlog project that will have RPGs in it. It’ll either be my GameCube replay project as originally planned or my final Xbox 360 games. Whatever I decide, I’ll be talking about the RPGs here :)

I have been a little quiet in this thread lately since I haven't had much time to play, but I'm still plugging away at Sea of Stars and also Lies of P. I was hoping to get through more of those before Mario RPG and Persona 5 Tactica come out, but those are going to be my priority when they arrive, so I'll be posting more about them I'm sure!

Either way, I'll have quite a bit of RPG cleanup moving into the end of the year since early 2024 is stacked with RPGs I want to play, at least come late January and onward.

Larian keep working on those BG3 ports for Xbox, and are getting "very close" now. They recently doubled down on a 2023 release, and I'm really looking forward to it. Curious to know what their window for the cross-play update is, because I have friends playing on PC and would love to be able to play coop with them.

Working on a bit of Ryza 1, boy I must be early on if I only just unlocked sidequests. May swap from this to a bit of pikmin or AI tho. Im feeling wiped

And that's a wrap on Octopath 2, after beating the final boss with the power of teamwork, friendship, and cold hard cash

The game clicked with me more by the end, though imo it's mostly carried hard by its combat and presentation. And Partitio, who's the absolute best

Man what a year for RPGs. Probably the strongest we've had in decades it feels like.

Baldur's Gate 3 probably wins out for me but stuff like Octopath II are up there. Galleria will always be a 2020 release for me!

This is is what I am doing funnily enough, I started DQ11s back in August and only just got to the end of Act One. I do like it but it’s so long that I needed to play other things to freshen things up. I’m taking a break from it now and will look to go back and play the intermissions and then onto Act Two at some point.

Waiting for Mario RPG, been playing Fate Samurai/Remnant on and off since launch on PC. Been pretty impressed with it's production values. I'm not a Fate fan but I'm really liking the characters and story. Environments are quite samey though.

Last RPG I finished was Ys X around 10 days ago. "Platinumed" it on Switch (trophy system built into the menus). Final time was around 80 hours, but I did play on Nightmare and was exhausting all the NPC dialogue too. I was pretty impressed with the game on Switch, and I miss Karja which I've never felt for any of Adol's other allies (besides Dogi!) lmao. Didn't really like the ship gameplay though.

Also I rocked Adol's Cleria Armor for the whole game, only saw his regular model for like 30 minutes lol

I just joined here after being on Xboxera (I have a JRPG thread there lol) and Installbase for a few years. Looking forward to sharing my own RPG experiences with all of you as well! 👋

Welcome! I’m also a big Falcom fan :) Looking forward to playing Ys X myself whenever it heads West.

Welcome! Similarly to Xghost I’m a big Falcom fan, waiting for the western release, but good to hear it’s something to look forward to

Had a few days spare before Mario RPG and P5T drop so I decided it was time to get back to Trails and start the first Cold Steel game.

Not sure quite how I feel about it going with what feels like a very Persona inspired school setting and overloading me with a class of 9 different characters to get to know and that's not even including teachers like Sara and people outside of the class that seem important too. It's a lot to start off with and very overwhelming right now but hopefully I'll grow into it.

ALSO!!!! THERE'S NO CHEST MESSAGES IN THIS ONE??? They were the heart and soul of the Trails games I've played 😭😭

I will say though, it's really cool seeing the world in a proper 3D scale now and it seems like we have maps for every dungeon as well as warp points and stuff (just done the first set of requests on the first free day so far) so mechanically I am liking the improvements here so far.

I didn’t get to circle back last night, but I’m excited to hear your thoughts on Cold Steel as you play! It was the third Trails game I played and it took me a while to get into the groove of it, but I still ultimately really enjoyed it. Definitely wild how many characters are in the Cold Steel games. With so many years in between releases originally I definitely had a few moments over the course of the series where I was like wait who was that NPC exactly again haha. The lack of treasure chest messages is definitely a bummer, but there’s a small cool thing similar in one of the games.

We’re getting more Dragon’s Dogma II info in roughly ten days. Hope we’ll hear about a release date then, I’m excited to play it :)

Played a bit more last night and got to the end of the first day on the field trip which was pretty nice.
I was happy to see Alisa apologise to Rean for the misunderstanding at the start instead of holding onto it for the rest of the game, she comes across more as someone who struggles to vocalise her feelings and I can appreciate characters like that.
The field trip itself was nice to get out and see a more traditional Trails town and routes with all the usual monster extermination quests.

Also, there's been a couple of npcs who use some Scots in their dialogue, the basic stuff like cannae, didnae, nae, ye, yer, etc and I will absolutely take that as my substitute for the chest dialogue lmao. The quest at the market stall had the guy saying stuff like "belter" and "nae danger" and I'm like YAS THESE ARE MY PEOPLE

I keep getting tempted by the sales for the first game, but I’m just not a fan of its overall aesthetic. I’m still thinking about it though— right now I’m fully in waiting mode for the NA sale, fervently hoping for some meaty discounts on several RPGs.

Getting closer to Dragon Quest Monsters makes me want to buy it after all, of course. But I do think it's much smarter for me to wait and play it in the future, I just don't have the time. Now if Dragon Quest V gets discounted for the holidays on Android...

The original Dragon’s Dogma is a very odd, singular game that its graphics don’t always best represent. Without saying too much, that game goes places if you are unfamiliar. It’s also kind of a smaller, more dense world than you might expect walking in, and there’s a great focus on fun, awesome combat (it’s made by one of the big Devil May Cry guys). I’m hoping to replay it before the sequel comes out. If you are 50/50 on it, yeah wait for a sale especially since Capcom has them all the time, but I definitely recommend giving it a try. It’s a game I’m very fond of.

Yeah the field trips are definitely the classic Trails experience and are so much fun. It’s really cool seeing how they transitioned the world and series into 3D as part of those too. My favorite character with a Scottish accent / dialogue is definitely Becky, she’s a ton of fun :)

Newest additions to my RPG collection:

Star Ocean, I was really planning to grab it later down the line... But then, going to get Mario RPG... It was there... "Spongebob don't need it" moment! Heard too much amazing things online and gave in. Mario RPG should be pretty short so I'll go into SO prob immediately after lol.

It'll be my first playthroughs of both games... Wasn't around for either of em lol, though as I said in the SMRPG thread I did briefly give SMRPG a go in 2010 or so.

So with that I figured I'd flaunt my collection a little lol:

As you might be able to tell, this is the #1 reason I love the Switch.

Put down Triangle Strategy briefly to play through the Super Mario RPG remake. One thought I wanted to share on TS is how impossible of a game it is to tier list. For those not aware, TS is designed around it's new game + system as you need at minimum 4 runs to see every story branch and recruit every character. Like Chrono Cross, anyone recruited is available in NG+ outside of battles where they show up as an enemy, guest, or would leave the party as part of the narrative. In addition on ng+ enemies scale with your party until everyone hits the level cap of 50 towards the end of your new game + run. After that everyone stays at level 50 no matter how many times you ng+ again. Due to this though you have to do one of two things for tier lists and opinions seem to be split on this.

1) 3 Tier lists, one for a clean save, one for your initial ng+ before everyone hits the 50 cap, and one for ng++ when everyone is at the level cap

2) A wholistic tier list looking at the game as an 80 chapter experience where you recruit everyone and see all 4 endings.

However even among those options there are extra problems and things to consider. If you go with the first option, should your ng++ level 50 run assume you have everyone unlocked? That's only possible after you've seen all 4 endings, and how many people are really going to find value in that.

On the other hand if you go with the second option, when do you do the true golden route? That route has arguably 2 exclusive characters, and sensibly most people would want to save it for their final run. However if you do that those route exclusive characters are basically "bottom tier" since they're only available for 4-5 battles out of 80. Of course in a vacuum both those characters are excellent and it makes sense from an efficiency stand point to get them before you're doing level 50 runs of the game.

Sorry for the ramble, it's just been on my mind as I play TS and read what people thought at the games launch vs those who played the game 6-8 times. Some of those in the 6-8 run lists are only tiering based upon level 50 runs with everyone available. Others only care about a clean new game only.

It is occuring to me that I don't want FFVII to end, maybe that's why my current playthrough has been going on for years despite not nearly going 100%. On disc 3 now, only grinding and the final dungeon left as I understand...

Just finished FFVII for the first time after starting my first playthrough - very fittingly - around 7 years ago. A game I will without a doubt come back to and replay at least once in the future. But for now on to Intermission and then (imp)patiently waiting for Rebirth to arrive!

I’m looking for some good turn based rpgs games to play. I’m looking at persona 4, Yakuza like a dragon and some older final fantasy’s, but what are some good ones on switch would any of y’all recommend?
Well I'll always recommend persona 4, but beyond that I really enjoyed both the original Octopath Traveler and Tokyo Mirage Sessions.

Trails From Zero is pretty cool. It’s the fourth Trails game and the second best entry point into the series. It works well as a standalone adventure and if you wanted more the direct sequel is on Switch, Trails To Azure, or you can go backwards and play the Sky trilogy on PC.
