But the last row is still all guest characters. Diddy, Funky, and Pauline are all Donkey Kong characters, not Super Mario characters, so it kinda makes sense. Wiggler and Peachette are the only ones that feel particularly out of place (it would’ve been better if the placement of those two were swapped).

It could’ve been a lot worse if they had taken the same approach they took with the Wii U DLC, lol. And at least this time the Mii icon gets to stay in the bottom right!!
I can agree on diddy and funky but not Pauline, she’s in mainline Mario and has not appeared once in donkey Kong outside the crossovers.

Counting Pauline as a Donkey Kong character at this point is a pretty big stretch, might as well call Mario one too lol

I mean, sure, she’s more Mario than Donkey Kong these days thanks to being in Odyssey (in which she appeared in a kingdom specifically meant to be the location of the original Donkey Kong game that had plenty of references not just to arcade Donkey Kong but the DK series in general, including Country, so…) and subsequently a few Mario spin-offs as well, but at the very least she’s both, so while she may not fit as a “guest” as well as Diddy and Funky do, it still works. Would be better if Donkey Kong himself was down there with them all, too, sure, but I feel like they did the best they could with the character select screen without majorly changing up the layout.

Wow, so much new key art for a game that's been out in its base form since 2014.

Always amazing to think about. I don't play the Miis much anymore but I've always been partial to the PAC-MAN one with the animated helmet. I'll check some of these out as I play next week :D

I'm getting horrific flashbacks to goddamn Wii Rainbow Road because of that fucking hairpin turn directly after the figure 8.

Swear to God if I hit the boost after Lakitu drops me off and hitting the guard rail head on knocks me back to Earth like it did on Wii I'm gonna lose my shit.

one of the reasons why i loved replaying wii rainbow road a million times back in the day is cuz i'm a masochist for difficult levels that mess with the player

That's the level that made me rage quit MKWii more than anything else 😭

Skill issue be damned when the game sabotages you before you even get a chance to learn more difficult manuevres

its gonna be even more difficult that mario kart 8 deluxe has 200cc. effortlessly driving into a space pit has never been easier until wave 6 🤣

Wife is pissed that they're adding another Rainbow Road. I'm surprised she wants to play as Pauline, I thought she'd go for Peachette.

Rosalina's Ice World is a good pick. It's kind of eh as Special Cup track in MK7 but it's fine for the BCP. Wii Rainbow Road looks like it's been shrunken but that probably works better for it
All the Mario Kart games end with Rainbow Road, I would’ve been upset if it hadn’t.

i cannot WAIT for the chaos that MKWii's rainbow road brings. so many childhood memories of anger, frustration, sadness, acceptance, and then desire to play it again.

I still think it's weird that Piranha Plant Pipeline isn't in Wave 6. Like, did it just not work in Mario Kart 8's engine or something? The whole point of this DLC was to preserve Tours tracks. Having one missing for no apparent reason is weird.

Maybe we'll get a Secret Cup to make 100 tracks in MK8D lol

Late on reacting to this but pretty happy with how this all turned out; I get it probably has its fans but Piranha Plant Pipeline getting swapped out with Rosalina's Ice World was the right call imo. 3DS felt a bit underrepped in the booster course and I really don't think Pipeline was that fun a course; maybe slightly more interesting track design than Sky-High Sundae, but that course had the benefit of a more interesting visual style.

Also really happy with the QOL updates and Mii costumes, really nice to see the game end on such a high note. Still some missing characters from Tour I'd have liked to see (but even getting new characters with the booster course wasn't a guaranteed thing until this year) and Airship Fortress was robbed, but all up I'm definitely satisfied until we reach the next proper MK entry!

If anything, Nintendo may have more plans for that Pipeline concept in the next console Mario Kart game. Time to look forward to the future.

If it is in the next game, it'll have the benefit of being a ground up remake of the track. Pretty exciting!

speaking from personal experience every track in wave 6 is way better then PPP

if you had to cut any given tour track track for a proper remake in a full game later, pipeline is the correct choice. as it is it's pretty basic and a simple texture/lighting update isn't going to do enough for it to be interesting to race on

Yo, this will be the best thing for Mario Kart. Wii Rainbow Road and 200cc!

Also, I will play more often as a Mii now that we have the Moo Moo outfit which is freaking cool! Moo Moo Enjoyers, please unite!

Hello there !
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has more retro tracks than any other game in the series. It's a true retrospective of the history of Mario Kart that's presented by the game.
So I've been wondering for some time what it would be like if we played these 96 tracks in chronological order, i.e. in the order in which the games were released (from SNES to Tour) and in the order of the cups in each game (from the Mushroom Cup to the Special Cup).

kinda wild of think about how there's only 5 Wii tracks that aren't in MK8D

This may be way too soon, but I couldn’t help myself. I already put together my wanted Retro tracks for MK Next lol. Thought it would be a fun excerise. It’s a mixture of both a wishlist and expectations.

I’m of course assuming the usual 16 Retros in the base game, one appearance of a game per cup, as usual.

SHELL CUP
DS Figure-8 Circuit
3DS Daisy Hills
GBA Cheep Cheep Island
Wii Toad’s Factory

BANANA CUP
SNES Vanilla Lake 1
GBA Luigi Circuit
N64 Wario Stadium
3DS Shy Guy Bazaar

LEAF CUP
GCN Mushroom City
3DS Wario Shipyard
SNES Bowser’s Castle 2
Wii Dry Dry Ruins

LIGHTNING CUP
GBA Lakeside Park
N64 Banshee Boardwalk
DS Airship Fortress
GCN Rainbow Road

Some notes on what I considered:

- Automatically eliminated any course that appeared in MK8D, including its new ones. Just spent 10 years with them, think other courses should be given the opportunity in the spotlight.

- In terms of tracks that have already appeared as retro tracks before, MKDS and MK7’s retro courses were given priority before MKWii, because of the bigger visual upgrade potential.

- I attempted to follow some “rules” to pad it out. For instance, I don’t really care about any circuit tracks but I know they’re realistically going to appear so I couldn’t ignore them. I also usually like Star/Special courses more but I knew we’d get some flower cup and mushroom cup tracks.

- I don’t know what to do about GBA Rainbow Road. The BCP was really the perfect place for it and it didn’t show. GCN felt right because the next big console MK should get the next big console RR in line after 64, like how 64 RR was a big deal for 8.

- GCN RR and N64 Wario Stadium are the reasons Wario Colosseum couldn’t make it. Didn’t want 2 Wario courses or 2 GCN in the Lightning cup, but would’ve loved to have it otherwise.

I'm shocked none of these "next Mario Kart retros" predictions include the missing Tour track Pipeline. That feels like the freest guess for a retro for 2 reasons

1) It's clear Nintendo has wanted to preserve all the Tour tracks with the DLC. No matter how "bad" they thought it was (if the speculation is true) they wouldn't just abandon a released track.

2) Every Mario Kart has included at least 1 retro from every prior major MK game (before someone well actually's me with the arcade games). Nintendo considers Tour to be a major Mario Kart game, and it's reasonable to guess a retro track from Tour will be in MK Switch 2. How convenient a single Tour original track was "cut" from the booster course pass.

I'm shocked that no one is including WiiU tracks either. Probably just cause people have been playing them for a decade now, but I do think we'll get a few MK8 tracks touched up a little.

MK8 tracks would depend on whatever the gimmick is for MK10. if there's a big mechanical gimmick, I can see a couple MK8 tracks making it. otherwise there's probably not much they can do unless they do a day/night version to flex Drake's real time lighting abilities

Even if there isn't a big mechanical difference, they would likely just give the courses some graphical touch ups. I think antigrav and the MK7 stuff is here to stay, but there's a lot they can do to polish up courses visually from 2014. I don't think they'll do a night cycle aside from a few courses as a gimmick.
Mario Kart 8 still looks great, but you can tell there's corners cut to get it looking that good sometimes. Like look at the trees above the entrance here.
I feel like they'd also be switching up art direction for the next Mario Kart, going less for realism with a faded palette, and instead something more stylized (but not as barren as Tour/BCP)

Every Mario Kart, since the introduction of retros, has had a retro from all prior MK games. That'll come to an end eventually, but MK8's base game tracks are over a decade old at this point. Regardless of if MK Switch 2 has a new gimmick or not, just having a track redone with 2024 hardware should give it a substantial graphics boost. Tracks like Twisted Castle, Electrodrome, or Cloudtop Cruise could do some fun things with ray tracing as an example. Heck even without a graphics boost, new gimmick, and assuming the successor is BC, the idea that Nintendo isn't going to include retros from the best selling Mario Kart in the next title is pretty silly.

I don't think it's silly at all. Outside of adapting to new gimmicks, the other thing they can do is completely redesign the level to just add more dressing. I don't think they would want to veer to far away from the tracks' structure, but being a track from an HD game with a lot of baked in lighting and set dressing as is makes it hard to visualize what they could do. Dead Space was an easier reimagining to me (also helps that game didn't age gracefully, visually)

What do you think of the idea of a secret cup? as we arrive at 96 races in total, we would only need 4 to reach 100 altogether, 4 races = 1 cup (well I'm dreaming a little😭)

In my mind Toad Harbor is the quintessential MK8 track, not sure why. If there's one track I'd take to represent the game in a new MK it'd be that one.

Sunshine Airport is a good contender aswell, I think.

But overall, a MK8 Track in a retro cup would be for me: Anything but Electrodrome. I hated that track.

Sad we won’t get the last new track and Rosalina’s Ice World was on the lower end of tracks I still wanted, but otherwise very excited for Wave 6 and the final updates! Feeling vindication Mario didn’t get combined with anyone on the CSS lol.
Congratulations, I genuinely thought the fur suits would have been merged, but I guess not. Good call!

I’m not expecting it any time soon, but one of my first thoughts after racing on Yoshi’s Island back in wave 4 was “wow, I can’t wait for this to be a retro course some day”. Its already charming as heck in MK8 with the Tour aesthetic, but a full, ground-up remake of that track would be stellar.

I have a feeling we aren’t even gonna get old tracks until maybe DLC in the next game. Going from, what, 600 retro tracks to like 16 would not go well IMO

I’m fairly confident that the next Mario Kart will look quite a bit different in general, at least structurally. It’s in the same position that Smash is in right now, and I doubt Nintendo is willing to settle for “just another Mario Kart”.

Either it’s just more Mario Kart 8 (lol), or we see a bit of a reinvention that throws out a lot of series staples, such as retro tracks. At least for the base game.

My thinking for a while has been that the next game might forgo retro cups altogether in favor of "crossover cups", at least for the base game

The ideal imo would be getting those crossover cups in addition to the retro cups, but the main sales pitch for the BCP being old tracks makes me think this might be a bit of a last hurrah for retros for a good while

I hate the crossover content in mk8 so much. them doubling down on that aspect in a new game would be so damn disappointing
Why? All the crossover courses are fan favorites. Literally every time online I see Excite Bike, either F-Zero course, Hyrule, or Animal Crossing it gets chosen. There were several times when new DLC waves launched when those stages got chosen over the new ones by a landslide. Kinda irritated me but the point is all the crossover stuff is super popular.

I don't want them to make the entire game Smash Kart personally, I think that idea is dumb.
But I wouldn't mind seeing more crossover tracks now and then, especially if they also do more tracks based on other Mario games like they did DKC Returns, Yoshi's Island and kinda Wario Land 1. And I do think some of the crossover tracks should appear as retros in the next game like Maka Wuhu or Big Blue.
...That is mostly just the part of me that wants more remixes of F-Zero music though. Damn I'd love to hear Red Canyon, Fire Field or Dream Chaser in the Mario Kart big band style.
