StarTopic Future Nintendo Hardware & Technology Speculation & Discussion |ST| (New Staff Post, Please read)

I have one simple question.

Switch 2 when?
When worlds collide, you can run
But no can hide!
When worlds collide, you'll laugh so hard you'll swear you've died
When worlds collide
Hold my hand, I'll be your guide when worlds collide
Buckle, buckle, buckle up for the sweetest ride
And prepare to have your mind blown wide when worlds collide
When worlds collide

I remember back in 2016. I followed the NX news weekly on reddit. It was a different kind of excitement. For a new thing. Now, it's still exciting, but it is for refinement, specifics and maybe some hidden surprise. Maybe the the road was a little more bumpy this time with the whole "Switch Pro" debacle. But even if there are months, days or hours left until the reveal, it's been a pleasure speculating 👏

Also here's a total nonsense thought:

Two SKUs refer to chonky Switch 2 and Switch 2 lite at the same time. Switch 2 Lite simply reuses the old LCD screen from the old Switch.

post a 🤪 in the thread if you’re 🤪

Shouldn't pretty much most of this be in the other Switch 2 thread? It's really awful to follow the tech discussion here right now.

Hmmm… For me, there’s no reason to believe anything has changed with the successor’s schedule, unless we hear something else from their next meeting. Late 2024 (November most probably, October at the earliest). They said they won’t talk about it in this FY. At best, you MIGHT get an acknowledgement, and ideally, they won’t call it “Switch 2” (URGH…). A February Direct will have Switch games and release dates up to the end of the Summer, and a new console reveal most likely in the Spring (April at the earliest, May most probably), independent of a Direct. Games for the successor will be the main focus of the Summer Direct, and the last wave of Switch titles will be a part of the September Direct, confirming support for it until 2025 at least. Metroid Prime 4 won’t get any cross-gen special treatment, quite rightly. It will be a Switch game, look like a Switch game, and play like a Switch game. Once the successor releases, I don’t see the Switch being supported beyond past-gen ports and security updates. I don’t believe a cross-gen period will be long because their ambitions won’t stand still, their partners have already moved on, and I also suspect that Nintendo wants people to adopt the new console as quickly as possible. I believe they’ll aim very high - perhaps 25m in the first year, outselling the PS5 domestically within the first 12-18 months, and getting to 100m quicker than the DS and Switch.

Switch 2 is the simplest, best name for it. Deny it all you want, but it makes the most sense to spell to consumers it is an upgrade and not just another Wii U.

have you read any of the past 50 pages and learned what's going on, because you are wrong on basically everything

It's a better name than Wii U and, let's be honest, choosing to call it any other name will just confuse people.

Bad name? Yes, but literally what the fuck else are we going to call it?
Super Nintendo Switch ticks all the boxes, to be honest.

Nah he’s entitled to his opinions. Of course, we can only assume he has already come up with a smarter and more marketable-friendly name than Switch 2
Listen I lived through Wii and survived WiiU with trauma.
Nintendo will never come up with a better name than Switch / Switch2

Nope. It’s still my view that it isn’t, and nobody will change my mind. Until they say that’s what it is, I refuse to call it that, and the “But Wii U” concern is so overcooked on here that it flambéed the whole restaurant, not just the kitchen. Whatever. It’s another topic.

They... Did not say that.
I could’ve sworn there was a topic on these boards from a previous meeting, which said there wouldn’t be a successor this FY. That means April at the earliest, BUT it would mean acknowledging it by now, production of prototypes, etc., and some more whispers from somewhere. Everything is relatively tight-lipped for something which would come in the first half of 2024. Not only on the system itself, but from developers. For those reasons, Late 2024 remains the most probable window for a release date.

*hasn't done numerals.

But we cant compare Nintendo of then (pre learning from the mistakes of the Wii U) to now, the old Nintendo would never called something as clear cut as "The OLED model"
Gee, like the company that named their Game Boy with a Light "Game Boy Light", or the one with colour "Game Boy Colour", or their extra large DSi "XL". 😅

OLED Model is pretty in line with their usual MO, but I will admit the specific mention of a technology is outside their wheelhouse.

Don't think they're gonna stray away from doing it after four decades in the business. It's a PlayStation-thing. Same with "Pro". Goes to show you how ingrained PlayStation is in gaming culture. lol

This thread is gonna be so funny whether something does or doesn't happen. The OLED announcement was some of the most fun I've had in this thread after the initial disappointment of Aula existing wore off. We will either pop off or we will all wallow in misery.

Either way, the memes will be lovely. Can't wait.

Objectively speaking this doesn't appear to be the case. Nothing really points to late 2024, while developers really haven't been all that tight lipped at all. Barring major studios leaking stuff, which they tend not to, we've heard about dev previews and even about some developers perhaps maybe if they can, bringing their game to the platform, but playing coy.

As for Nintendo's comments, what got misconstrued is they said the NUMBERS PRESENTED of their projections until the end of the fiscal year only include existing hardware, which people mistook for "no hardware this fiscal year", but that isn't what they said, all they said that the numbers presented in that meeting only represent sales numbers of hardware currently available, and thus if new hardware were to be introduced, that would be on top of these numbers, not a part of them.

?

Yes.

There will be significant detail cut on any UE5 Switch 2 games as that level of detail will be difficult to run and will be pointless at fairly low resolutions.
I respectfully disagree. Texture fidelity level/preset is the result of the developers' choice. They can go for anything they think will strike the best balance between visuals and performance.

I should add, in those example, the texture quality is one of the main reasons why the games displayed look so damn good, the other being obviously, the lighting tech.

c’mon, we all know it’s next week

No one is wrong till they officially unveil this thing. This thread has been wrong so many times I think it's reasonable to control your expectations.

That's also taking into consideration what's been posted in the last dozens of pages too. I think it's great work but I'm not sure it guarantees anything is imminent.

If Angel Whispers is wrong and we get this thing sooner, we all win, including Angel. So far though, throughout this year, the people who have been saying 2024 for everything appear to be the most right.

Is it bad that I have no confidence of an announcement this week or next? I need something else for me to jump in this boat.
It's not bad. I think you're just incredibly excited and want 2witch news and 2witch but don't want to be hyped up for official news only to be disappointed.

It's really not stupid. And if it is It's as stupid as PlayStation 2.
Yeah but PS2 was 20+ years ago. Consumers can be not so smart, while the subconscious primate brain is inherently dumb when it comes to things other than "fruit tasty", so putting NS2 next to PS5 will not work in NS2's favour.

I think Nintendo is just as likely to come up with a new name instead of "Switch", but a straight forward number increase appended to the name is probably the least confusing to your average consumer. It's already done everywhere else, and is a lot harder to misunderstand.

That doesn't really matter. Especially since you could say PS5 vs iPhone 15.

People aren't going to think the PS5 is better because it has a higher number. I know MS did that when they named the 360 but than they went back and named the Xbox One Its name.

Worst case they could do Switch 2000 or Switch Two but they could just leave it as Switch 2.
