StarTopic Future Nintendo Hardware & Technology Speculation & Discussion |ST| (New Staff Post, Please read)

The question is why they wouldn't have 'Switch' in the name, when the brand is popular, it's appealing to say, it's still a descriptive name for the device (something that Switches), and Nintendo has always sustained their popular brands (NES, Game Boy, DS, Wii) beyond one generation. (if the argument against this is that their successors sold less... there were other reasons and reusing the name wasn't one of them). Even non-Nintendo tablet gaming devices are being called 'Switch-likes', it's become shorthand for the form factor. Naming it something just risks confusion.

When the name was revealed in October '16 I thought they struck solid gold, I immediately knew 'yeah this isn't another Wii U'.

Also I thought it was cute that the logo looked like dominos.

There being no active plan today doesn't negate such a plan from ever happening.
Nate confirming that there is a passive plan for FF7R 1+2 and the active plan starts tomorrow. Crazy day here on the boards.

If anything, this might be strong evidence for SF6 being first in line for Capcom’s Switch 2 endeavors. Capcom was probably in the loop regarding the Switch 2 earlier than most.
Considering they asked for more RAM with Switch, I think it a given they were some of the few shown first or were in the loop early in someway.

  • Touchpad on right joy-con (assuming it's larger and there's space for it)
  • Capacitive touch analog sticks as a gyro-on toggle
  • Capacitive shoulder buttons for scrolling menus
  • IR sensor on the top of joy-cons for pointer controls
  • More accurate gyro
  • Enhanced haptics (have some games play music through the rumble motors!)

Are some things I would want. From my Steam Deck usage, some have been really fun and useful in games.
I don't see them doing a TouchPad honestly but maybe Touch sensitive L and R bumpers or something weird instead of the scroll wheel?

The touch analogs are dumb imo. I have a steam deck and I thought it was cool until I actually used that feature and found it has zero meaningful use.

IR sensor on top is my dream and could improve the accuracy of the gyro, that would be cool

Enhanced haptics are very likely but the motors can already do some music, Kirby does it

It's intended mostly as a gyro-on toggle along with the touchpad touch input so the camera doesn't swerve when you're handling the device. Played with it a lot in DOOM/Eternal. I haven't used it for anything else. I think it's a harmless addition, most developers would just ignore it if there's no gyro aiming in their game.

Let me make it a little more interesting, would the Capcom game include all DLC released up to a certain point (Ex: Year 1 DLC for SF6, Separate Ways for RE4R, etc.)?

Sony has some weird exclusivity deal with USFIV from the PS4 onwards.
I don't think this is true

Think about it

Switch- Ultra Street Fighter 2
Switch 2- Street Fighter 6

That alone from Capcom shows you how far Nintendo has changed things around

I made the mistake of logging into NeoGAF (ew) just to see what my 18 year old self was saying after the reveal. Some of these takes I was responding to...

Some dude said:
The Wii U Pad was bothersome and now they're releasing an enhanced version of it.

Not impressed at all.

Don't see how. The Wii U Pad was bothersome because developers couldn't figure out how to use the second screen, or it became cumbersome during gameplay. Otherwise, it was great for off TV-play. Games on the Switch will only ever use one screen.

First of all, my first reaction to the name was...extremely neutral. Switch is an okay name, but ultimately forgettable; I feel it's too ambiguous on which to build a brand as big as Nintendo hopes. It's hard to imagine me (or anyone else) saying, "I want to buy a Switch."

It's fine. Really. The logo reminds people of Domino's because the Domino's logo... is also a Domino. It's on purpose. Dominos are related to the idea of games. It's also a Yin Yang symbol. It's also the controller layout. Super memorable.

The name itself is pretty great. It communicates the action of switching, so that when people wanna play the console, they can just say "Hey, wanna Switch?"* just like Facebook and Snapchat have become verbs in their own right. It also tells the functionality of the console. It's also representative of Nintendo "making a switch".

There's a lot behind the name, it being a cute one-syllable word which works with a lot of slogans is a cherry atop the sundae.

*This didn't really catch on

Can Nintendo Switch compete with Mobile gaming?

The idea of preserving one's save progress in let's say, Mario Kart, makes the Switch more enticing. Just the simple fact that, without any adaptors or dongles, the same session you played for an hour on the subway ride can be continued on the television in full HD, this alone can justify the Switch in people's minds.

I don't think I would have anticipated back then that I would just keep repeating this stuff over and over til the next one comes out. I'm never going to shut up about this, am I :(

My new tinfoil hat theory is Nintendo announcing the Switch 2 with Metroid Prime 4 as a showpiece, but the game releases months ahead of Switch 2 on Switch as a cross-gen title with a free update.

This boosts MP4 sales and means everyone owns a Switch 2 game on day one.

I think Capcom will port Street Fighter VI for a day 1 release or first quarter of next Switch HW.

I also think it would be more effective for Nintendo to focus its first fiscal year titles (including from third party partners) in games releasing by 2024 up to late ports of 2023 games as possible. By this way, the can give a sort of fresh vibe to the system for more non core gamers.

And then 2022 and older ports in FY2025/26 and beyond, being mostly titles with all DLC included (if there was any). In addition, most of them can have a very quick time window between its announcement and release.

The only exception would be RDR2 (and thats considering is possible a cross-gen game).

SFVI for Launch Window feels like a good play to make. Hell you could bundle it as a special package that gets people on equal grounds with PS5, X-Series, and PC. Though that is not the third party game that I am genuinely thinking of.

The one I am more wondering, is if Cyberpunk2077 could be viable here, if to allow consumers to see how Nintendo's Next Gen console optimizes and calculates with DLSS (assuming it's a modified 3.5) of the lush and vibrant landscapes of Night City (and Dogtown). It'd also show the fidelity and capabilities that could be potentially potent for those needing to see how Nintendo pushes the needle like Skyrim and BOTW did.

(also this is my first post here--and I can't wait to discuss the future!)

If Nintendo wasn't planning on keeping Switch in the name, they shouldn't have named the online service Nintendo Switch Online. Though renaming NSO every seven years to match the console is weird-but-understandable enough that I can see Nintendo doing it over just giving their service a generic name. Not sure what generic name they could give it at this point anyway: they already blew their load with Nintendo Network back with 3DS/Wii U; Nintendo Online is acronyms to "NO", so that's out; Nintendo Live is their community event thing (plus Xbox called dibs)...

Especially the part about people fearmongering that mobile gaming will kill dedicated handhelds. We've had this discourse for over a decade now, guys. I don't think this'll be the one to do it.

I think it should be fine--depending on if they keep it as part of the "Switch" brand, but being able to define the difference more properly on what makes the generational leap stick. Though perhaps that really depends on how Nintendo changes up their online tactics altogether for Super Switch.

Hey, new to the forum but I've been following this thread for a while. I've been seeing the idea of UFS proprietary storage cards for the Switch 2 floating around. Is there a read/write speed advantage that proprietary cards have over microSD cards? I'd also be pretty worried about the availability and price of these cards, especially with what happened with the Vita.

Wtf has been going on in here lol?

-AI generated "art" being posted...
-Users sniping each other with zingers from afar
-BS rumors or leaks being posted again out of desperation
-Constantly spinning the wheel on the same arguments we've been having for years

It's like it's getting worse waiting in between waiting for news. I feel like the Henderson Tweet was solid enough news but it may not be enough for some.

The biggest take away here is that the lack of Switch 2 is tearing up the fabric of society and only Nintendo can save us.

I think the understanding is that this would be for the game cards themselves, unless I’ve missed something in the last 30 pages?

I believe the conversations have been in regards to UFS storage replacing SD cards, and Nintendo making a profit off of them.

I want that day to be here. The day where Nintendo officially announces the Switch 2 and watch all the reactions to it.
same, I wanna be there like I was there for the posts that ensued at r/NintendoNX after the imminent announcement of the Switch

I'm looking forward to the retrospection of posts here and how right the calculations and theories that have been presented here were

How does that compare to the PS5/Series consoles CPU bearing in mind Nintendo clocked the Switch CPU at 50% of its max clock speeds?
Let's put it this way in dragon Ball Z power scales...

I, Prince Vegeta am the Xbox Series S, and that clown Kakarot is Switch 2! Kakarot's son is X box series X with a broken arm, while PS5 is is Super Perfect Cell.

But with Majora's Mask, I would be able to be on par with both

That's up to Capcom. One would think they would (and sell it for $70), but they could sell it separately too to make even more money.

Hardware Question/Speculation:

If NES is 8-bit, SNES is 16-bit, and N64 is 64-bit… what will the Switch 2 be?????

To answer this a bit more thoroughly, the N64 being 64-bit was basically entirely a marketing flex. It was neutral to detrimental in most actual scenarios, with a not insignificant amount of game code actually running in 32-bit mode. Nintendo didn't actually release a 64-bit console again until the Switch, with all the intervening ones being 32-bit.

For reference, Sony and Microsoft didn't go 64-bit until the PS4 and Xbox One respectively.

I’m expecting good things this gen, and the evidence we have so far makes it pretty easy to be that optimistic.
Completely agreed. Switch started out slow, but once it picked up momentum big publishers started putting all kinds of stuff on it - older stuff mainly, because of the the effort it takes to cut down PS4 generation games for it.

This time, Switch is a proven concept, and it seems like there's a lot more technological flexibility to get new releases on there. So I expect major third-party developers to be on Switch 2 quicker and with much more volume. That will of course only last if the platform keeps it's momentum.

The example of FF7R was floated - why didn't that make it onto Switch? I think the answer is obvious: the game barely runs on PS4. The amount of "hidden" loading, corridor environments and unevenness in quality from scene to scene makes it clear the bandwidth to get it on Switch simply wasn't there. DQ11 made it over, but it's a lot less dense asset-wise. And even that required an engine overhaul and significant visual cuts.

Square puts so much stuff on Switch, it's nuts. Even Final Fantasy - every single player one up till XII is on there. The Crisis Core remaster is on there in great form. Seems like the working relationship is excellent. If FF7Rem and/or Reb don't make it on during Switch 2's lifespan, my avatar will eat it's hat.

I’m torn.

I want Rebirth on Switch 2, but I also want to see the puppet eat
