StarTopic Future Nintendo Hardware & Technology Speculation & Discussion |ST| (New Staff Post, Please read)

In the Mk1 thread here on fami the matter has been discussed, it turns out that people and some media are distributing false or erroneous information about the game on Switch just to encourage the console war or clicks.

Getting fierce deja vu…

Do not trust this clown for anything that isn’t Spanish related and even in these cases dont put a lot of weight into what he says.

Let's calm down with the insults, he has been right before so it's worth posting it

He was the first to report about dev kits in the wild early July before other blogs started to post about it end of July

I wonder if this is similar to the Eiyuden Chronicle kickstarter where they were just guessing based on the buzz about a switch "pro" or NG switch.

I hadn't realized RTX Remix in Portal RT was literally just running over a rasterized version of Portal.

In hindsight, that makes a lot of sense, I had been wondering how in the world it was being considered a mod if it replaced the entire rendering pipeline itself but just assumed Nvidia figured out a way. Them attaching it to the game's current rasterization pipeline definitely puts that into perspective.

So with that said, I posted the DF analysis a while back, noting that while the lowest spec GPU they were testing it on could make 1080 60 with DLSS, it was almost assuredly still a more capable GPU than Drake, however it did open up the possibility that with optimization games like Portal could be full ray traced. Now knowing that what we were looking at was actually how both the game rendering normally AND being ray traced in one frame performed, the idea that an optimized fully ray traced Portal without relying on RTX Remix seems far more feasible.

The fully path traced Breath of the Wild dream* might be a reality!

*the dream being that it can run not that Nintendo will release it I have 0 idea what they're going to do I don't plan to pretend I do either because I will be assuredly wrong.

We can extrapolate the ray-tracing performance we can get on Switch 2 and PS5/SX/SS by using existing PC parts, and then we can compare how they perform relative to each other. This is by no means fully accurate, but it can give us some idea of what to expect as long as we don't focus on specific FPS numbers, but instead we focus on the relative performance to each other.

The closest GPU to the PS5 is a 6700xt. It has slightly more cores (2304 vs 2560), and in the video I'll link below it's running at 2.6GHz vs 2.2 on the PS5.

The 3050 mobile is (much) faster than the t239 on Switch 2, it has more cores (2048 vs 1536 shader cores), more ray-tracing cores (16 vs 12) and also runs at much higher clocks. In the second video below, the 3050 is consuming 40-45w and running at 1.8GHz, Switch 2 will probably run at 1.1GHz while docked.

The closest GPU to Series S is the 6500xt. It has fewer cores (1024 vs 1280 on Series S) but it usually runs at higher clocks on PC, so we can expect similar performance.

Minecraft RTX on a 6700xt (closest match to PS5):

Minecraft RTX on a 3050 mobile (closest match to Switch 2):

Minecraft RTX on a 6500xt (closest match to Series S):

If we compare the performance of each card relative to each other at ray-tracing, we get 6700xt (PS5) > 3050m (Switch 2) > 6500xt (Series S).

Let's keep in mind that the 6500xt is more similar to the Series S performance-wise than the other two cards are to their respective consoles, so the actual ray-tracing performance of the t239 should be closer to Series S than the difference between the 6500xt and the 3050 mobile in the videos. The gap between PS5 and the 6700xt is not that big, but the gap between the 3050 mobile and the t239 is more substantial, so take that into consideration while comparing.

If we take all that into consideration, and extrapolate those PC numbers to consoles, Switch 2 will probably perform as well as - or slightly better than - a Series S at pure ray-tracing, but it won't match the PS5, even with the advantage of using dedicated ray-tracing cores.

This is a reasonable conclusion, although, again, DLSS will complicate things. The 3050 is within spitting distance of the 6700xt in terms of native RT capability and DLSS Performance can provide a 2x to 3x performance boost over native, so even a Drake that’s at 70% of a 3050 could potentially throw punches.

It is literally physically impossible for the NG Switch to release in H1 of 2024. I know this for a fact. It is true and I am not just really tired and grumpy. I am right. Nobody will challenge me on this. This is not bait.

H1 2024, H2 2024, March, May, September, whatever. For someone who waited for 4 years, what are mere months.

But if I wanted to stoke the fire, I believe LSI is an extension of their foundry business, so maybe it's part of a deal to get SEC8 really cheap...
This is something I floated and discussed with others yesterday. The mention of assistance to a LSI member is innocuos and LSI is a division who provides semi-custom services for others companies. However, LSI, as you said, is an extension of their foundry business and LSI has a program where they provide assistance and services for companies that need to design and manufacture chips, but you need to use Samsung Foundry to manufacture it. It's the same program that got the Google Tensor design wins. I wouldn't be surprised if Nintendo got a sweet deal with Samsung for design, manufacture, RAM, Storage Solution, etc. Samsung Foundry is in dire need of prospecting clients and their fab expansion heavily rely on them not being underutilized (And losing money). It might be that T239 is fabbed on SEC8N or 5LPP/4LPP.

But again, just speculation at best. It's more probable that Samsung was just tapped up to manufacture the Game Card controller or/and provide memory solutions.

When this happens, the official account should respond and show it in real time. Perhaps tell the bad faith operators to remove it or get done for potential loss of earnings - that’s exactly what it is, not only on the sales, but developers getting an undeserved reputation for doing a bad job, which, in turn, could be a hindrance to them landing work in the future. Oh, and for the love of all that is good and pure, gaming sites must do their due diligence before publishing articles on this. No clout for these lying shits, and all of the shame for misleading their followers and readership. That wouldn’t even be extreme, tbqh, just call it “consequence culture”. Funny how they’re never really about the consequences.

A Drake reveal during Q1 of FY25 and a launch during Q2 would be a massive undertaking both from a marketing and logistics point of view.

It is unlikely, as much as I would love it to happen.

I wonder what companies would be interested in taking Nintendo's money to do exclusive new IPs for the Switch 2 like Deathloop, Octopath Traveler, Mario+Rabbids (I mean, that was a new franchise though obviously not a new IP), Ghostwire Tokyo, Forspoken, etc.

There has to be some company, but I'm not sure which.

P* is the only that comes to mind.

I leave IS out of this, because despite being a third party, they're basically a part of Nintendo.

OK, hear me out.

I know this is weird, and I don't expect anyone to agree, but one thing I'm genuinely going to miss with the Switch 2 are the really bad looking versions of other games. Or, to put things in a more positive light, the 'miracle ports.' Of course I don't want them to still be around, because I'm not the 'main audience' for them (that being people who have to/choose to play almost exclusively on Switch), but I'll still miss them a bit.

If a game is incredibly cheap (i.e. <£5 on a 90% discount) I sometimes buy it just to see how bad a game that otherwise looks decent on other consoles can look. To see the kinds of compromises and reductions needed to fit games that clearly weren't built for the Switch, onto the Switch. Good example being Mortal Shell (which was recently £2.49) and how it just looks like the Switch is barely even able to play it, yet it's still there, running on a handheld from 2017. It's fascinating to see these games exist in a context almost completely outside of the one they were intended to be seen in; a 'retro' factor that you don't get with more traditional ports. Like watching new media on a CRT TV, or listening to music on vinyl. It's a worse experience, but there's a novelty to it nonetheless.

With the Switch 2's improved power, the general 'diminishing returns' of modern graphics, and notable backlashes towards games like Cyberpunk 2077 and Mortal Kombat 1, it's unlikely that we'll get those versions of games anymore. They'll just be somewhat less good-looking, but still perfectly viable, versions of what we get on other platforms. At worst they might look like a lower-end PS4 game, but even those still look good overall, and with DLSS they won't even need to run at terrible resolutions either.

It'll be kind of like how the Switch killed separate handheld versions of games, but to a lesser extent of course. Just another symptom of how handhelds are slowly becoming more like 'portable versions of home consoles' than their own separate entities.

I don't know what Platinum's output is going to be for the next few years because they're making Project GG that will be a huge failure for Tencent and I assume that will eat up a lot of resources.

They said they're working on one new IP other than Project GG, so maybe that could be Nintendo contracted, but it could be another GaaS thing for Tencent.

Now that's a fetish.

If you mean toss an exclusive or two their way, then definitely Koei Tecmo and a few others. If you mean shift most of their development resources over to Nintendo hardware, I've got nothing. Maybe Platinum, but I think they have a good thing going with Square Enix, and they value their independence on top of that, so they likely wouldn't bite.

I mean, development on PS5 / Series X / PC isn't going to stop when ReDraketed launches.

You're going to get those "miracle" ports, though thanks to tools like DLSS they might not look and run as bad as some of those miracle Switch ports. ^^

I don't expect more than 3-4 total games from all combined publishers, it's just common for platform holders to try to get some third-party exclusives (or timed exclusives) nearish to launch.

(I also don't know if Platinum has much of a relationship with Square anymore)
