We can reset the poll while keeping the poll up, or we can delete the whole thing so you can start from scratch.
Okay I’ll probably end up starting from scratch sometime after Starfield so I’ll reach out then. Some of these options could probably get knocked off the poll completely in favor of some others.

Also heard on all the other suggestions from others 👍🏻.

Also, feel free to give suggestions for what anyone thinks should maybe be removed and added on the next version of the poll.

I'm thinking I'll probably end up removing:

Fire Emblem
Dead Space
Dead Island 2
Redfall
Hollow Knight

To replace them, I'm thinking of 5 others not currently included on the poll. Maybe replacing them with:

Mortal Kombat 1
Alan Wake 2
Lies of P
Dave the Diver
Pizza Tower

(The last 2 on the chance that a popular and highly rated indie ends up sneaking in which often happens).

I think Dead Space shouldn't be one of the removals, because I think it will do well enough to at least be nominated in a lot of places; the other four are probably safe removals though.

My thinking was it was just so low in votes even when it was one of the early releases this year when this poll was originally posted. Whereas Pikmin 4 has about the same amount of votes but maybe people early on didn't think it would score as high as it did, so I'm giving that another shot. I think 1:1 remakes are just a harder sell for this, same reason why Metroid isn't there. All that said, I'll definitely consider the idea.

The Forza reboot is another potential poll option since the series always reviews well (even though FH5 didn't get nominated in 2021 despite scoring 91-92 on Metacritic).

at this point I think

Zelda TOTK
Starfield
Baldurs Gate 3
Resident Evil 4 Remake

are likely candidates

Then Spiderman 2.

Last one is difficult to guess

Maybe Silksong? Alan Wake 2? Diablo 4? Street Fighter VI?

@JorgenRaft I think you should narrow it down to just 10

Think the current system is fine, especially since we're trying to predict 6 nominees and not just the GotY winner and it's impossible to reasonably narrow down games that aren't even out yet. Would make it less likely to have the embarrassment of a GotY nominee or even winner not being a poll option (like BG3 being right now)

How does this look? I tried to keep bias out of it (which is why FF16 is there and OT2 and LAD Ishin are not, plus I dropped Dead Space)

Seems like those should cover the likely candidates at this point. @JorgenRaft thoughts?

Yeah I imagine it'll look close to that plus 3 more just to get the full 20 poll options on there.

For TGAs I don't see Dave the Diver or Pikmin 4 getting nominated for Game of the Year at all. If we're cutting Dead Space idk why those would be there, especially Dave.

It's more just a matter of fitting the whole 20 into the poll. I did 17 last time and then ended up adding 3 more later on, two of which were already known quantities when the poll was made. I don't think many people expected Stray to get nominated last year but it did. Sure it was a lighter year, but sometimes these things turn out more surprising.

Oh that was more so a reply to the list proposed by Phantom Thief. I certainly don't think filling out a list of 20 candidates is a bad thing. I just don't see why Dead Space would be cut for some of the other games in the process.

I'd put Mortal Kombat over Assassin's Creed. AC is such a by the numbers franchise at this point.

Assassin's Creed major entries almost always get GOTY noms, and the upcoming one is notable because it is deviating from the current template and going back to the basics
It’s only ever gotten one GOTY nomination at the Keighleys. Add in that Ubi’s reputation has nosedived a bit and that Mirage isn’t even a full-size game, and I don’t really see the path for it.

Not saying it will be at the Keighleys, just that it deserves to be on the shortlist of the 20 GOTY nominees lol

Gonna do a last call for votes and vote changes here. Sometime after Starfield reviews post tomorrow, I'll be posting a new follow up topic with some swapped out poll choices and requesting this topic be closed.

currently, i'm thinking

starfield
totk
baldur's gate
spiderman
one capcom game (re4 or street fighter)
one indie game

diablo may have lost its spot after the reception to the season passes

Goes without saying, but after the initial wave of reviews Sea of Stars has gotta be on the new poll. Feels like the frontrunner for an indie nomination, if we get one at all.

I feel like this is the first time in ages that TGA will be genuinely tense to watch. 2023 doesn’t have one superior lock (like The Last of Us Part II and Elden Ring) or is like 2021 and 2019, that were both pretty even years as well, but was more like, a choice between evenly received games rather than a bunch of juggernauts having at it.

TOTK, BG3, Starfield, RE4R, MPR, and SFV.

Only 90++ game is deserved to be nominated in this year.

0
I think Starfield will miss it. It will get mid 80s Metacritic.
Alan wake looks good. could be a 90 game

So far the only games we are almost certain that will have a GOTY nominations are Zelda and Baldurs gate 3

0
literally impossible for starfield not to be nominated, no matter what the metascore is (which is guaranteed to be 90+ anyway). you think keighley will miss the chance to have an imagine dragons performance for a goty nominee on the game awards stage?

starfield, totk and baldur's gate are 100% locks.

Unless it's another fallout 76 disaster Starfield will easily get nominated.
Zelda, Baldur Gate and Starfield are the sure picks, for the other it's hard to choose. I think final fantasy 16, spiderman 2 and re4 remake.
Final fantasy is still final fantasy, it'll probably win best music and best action game and get a nomination for goty; spiderman 2 is the obligatory console exclusive pick for sony like zelda for nintendo and Starfield for Microsoft, unless it's a disaster but I don't think it will be; the last pick could go to a few games but I think resi 4 has the best chance.
Armored core 6 kind of just came and went and feels more like a game for enthusiast and fans of the series.
Street fighter 6 will probably get shafted because of its genre and only win best fighting game.
Diablo 4 kind of got its lunch stolen by Baldur gate 3 as a western rpg so I think it's going to get passed on.
The rest either are not as critically acclaimed or just in a genre that are considered lesser at the game awards, maybe if super Mario wonder gets an insane critical acclaim at the same level as odyssey it could be nominated but I don't think that's going to happen, it wouldn't win anyway so it's just going to get the best family game award.
As far as indie picks it looks grim. Even with some great games like pizza tower, Dave the diver and sea of stars none of them are as artsy as they'd need to be to get a goty nomination, especially in a stacked year as this. As much as I would love sea of stars to get a goty nomination over ff16 and win best rpg it's a turn based pixel art classic jrpg, it's never going to win.

Zelda, Starfield, BG3 and RE4R are 100% getting nominated. as for the last two spots, I don't think they will skip an indie even in such a weak year for them. so far, the only likely candidate is sea of stars (unless they nominate Chain echoes from last year.) The last spot will be a battle between Spiderman 2, FFXVI and Alan Wake 2 if it's really good.

Hi-Fi Rush deserves to be there honestly, also why is Silksong in the poll?

I thought it was coming out in 2045

An ambitious game in the 80s will be nominated over a big as ambitious game in the 90s. Been that way for a while now.

Unless it’s literally unplayable, Starfield will be nominated.

Okay so Starfield is getting a nom but won't disrupt the actual race at all. TotK vs. BG3 it is

weeeeeeeeeeeell...

...it'll probably still get nominated at least

It really going to be what game is in the public consciousness more when the award votes start bg3 or totk

Starfield is still getting a nom because it’s just too big. It’s out of the race for winning though.

On a larger scale I’d anticipate Starfield pulling in plenty of wins, similar to Death Stranding. The score is being pulled down by a few outlets that really aren’t jiving with it.

For the big GOTY though, that’s probably enough to hold it back as a legitimate contender to win.

The first three reviews I pulled up for Starfield, by total chance, were two 7s and a 7.5. Right then and there I knew it wasn't win-competitive anymore. I just hope I have a great time with it

Zelda vs. Baldur's Gate for GOTY then.

I assume Starfield's scope though will get it nominated.
