News Red Dead Redemption coming to Switch and PS4 on August 17, physical version on October 13

Switch now has GTA, Red Dead and LA Noire

GTA5 not even getting a last gen based port feels odd but I know all their big bucks come from GTA Online which needs to be up to date

And there it is.

I guess we'll find out soonish (like from Wario64 on Twitter) if the physical is all on cart or not.
Since the OG game was ~10GB (I'll edit when I get a chance to check my install size on XSX), it may fit on an 8GB card if there is the usual duplication in play for HDD/Disc based titles.

Maybe an unpopular opinion, but I'd take a straight port over a remake, since the latter carries the risk that they try to "Red Dead 2"-ify the gameplay. I absolutely loved RDR1, and low-key hated how RDR2 played.

My real complaint is that this still isn't on PC; I'm guessing it's coming eventually since Rockstar loves staggered releases, but I feel like a simple port probably could have just been put on everything day 1.
Same. RDR is way more fun than RDR2 to me. RDR2 is immersive and pretty and it's impressive that they pulled some of it off, but I really didn't have all that much fun playing it. It's clunky, the missions are all super restrictive, I hate being forced to walk, that kind of stuff.

I'm curious to play Undead Nightmare, I never managed to play that.

Otherwise... I dunno. I'm happy for people who never got a chance to play this, it's worth playing, but the sequel surpasses it in just about every way
Rare but based take. RDR2's restrictiveness is an issue bit I'm so tired of it being the only thing discussed online. The world is way better, Arthur Morgan is a better protagonist, and it's just all around a more fun experience. RDR really starts to lose steam around Mexico.

RDR1 coming to Switch (or PC with Deck compatibility) was the only way I was going to play it at this point, I’m totally fine with this announcement. As hilarious as it is.

Nice, I never played it, pro. going to give it a chance later in the year. Hopefully they don't fuck up the physical version and the entire game is on the cartridge

Lmao at that platform choice. Some people on the Internet will be furious, and I'm here for it. >:-)
Switch gets 3rdP port which skipped past Nintendo platforms: “Already played it years ago”, Spoils Game, “Runs better on PS/XBox (Never PC ☕😏)”, “Will it even run?”, “30FPS”

Switch gets 3rdP port of game those motherfuckers tell us they’ve played AND it doesn’t come to their latest preferred platform: “What is this trash and why isn’t it on PS5/XS!?”

Every announcement, Mate!! I’m especially looking forward to people seeing what high-budget PS360 games actually looked like, without their nostalgia-tinted specs, and walking back past comments that Nintendo hasn’t made anything which surpasses that. But Yeah, It’s so transparent. 💕✨

$50 for a straight port is, uh, not great. Was hoping for a lot more, don’t really have any interest in this.

Good to have it on more platforms I guess.

Literally my friends right now, adding the "why release it at this point? everybody already played it"

I saw this on YouTube and had to come here to confirm it was true.

I will purchase to support. Not sure when that will be. I was planning on playing through Pikmin 2 and 1 with the wife. Also in the middle of purchasing a new home and moving. 🤷🏾‍♂️🤦🏾‍♂️

Ehh, its on RAGE instead of Renderware. Rockstar was in a position to port the engine, instead of having to port the game like with GTA Trilogy.
The Trilogy isn't even based on the original Renderware versions. It was a remaster of the mobile ports.

So while I know shadowdrops are a thing and RDR will probably be a much better release in a technical sense, Rockstar just banked on GTA Trilogy selling specifically on the name even though all three games were insanely buggy, poorly upscaled messes.

red dead redemption is good as HELL very cool to see it come back finally. wild that it isnt on pc tho. guess emulation remains the answer there.

Do they have Switches or any handheld system? If not, they won’t fully understand the appeal of playing anywhere without being tethered to a wall, and having a chance to finish their games. I don’t understand the argument at all - If it’s a remaster/remake, the same logic applies, in that they already know the core story and premise. If it’s a port, it’s a chance to enjoy a loved classic again, without having to make space for their old systems and physical libraries. Also, just having the games there gives Nintendo fans a chance to be better invested in their IPs on their platform of choice. In the past, this game would’ve cost an extra $400 because of having to get another platform, and that isn’t an option for many. The long-term hope is that that will be no more.

I know, but that hasn't stopped native ports from happening before, like with Bayonetta & Vanquish.

Also no PC or PS5 versions either. It just seems weird.

Wonder if Nintendo commissioned the port?

Ahh well. Either way, it's nice to see Dan Houser's stranglehold over platform choices and his Nintendo hatred get consigned to history :D
If the speculation that Nintendo is the distributor is true (which would also explain the price tag), I would suspect it's an initiative on their part. RDR2 was cited as an inspiration for BotW, Reggie said they wanted RDR2 and there was a rumor from Totilo floating around about it being in the works for Switch. Would make sense to do RDR1 alongside it since it'd be less demanding.

Certainly not discounting the issue with the GTA Trilogy launch, but the basic point, that porting Renderware itself was impractical for GTA Trilogy.

I don't know if RAGE was ported to Switch or if RDR was ported to a new engine, but I'm guessing it's still RAGE.

I've only played RDR2 and didn't like it that much, but I've heard quite a few people praising the first game despite being lukewarm on the second one, so I don't know, maybe I will play it.

I do think Switch is the optimal platform for this kind of game, it's not too modern so it's going to run well and look phenomenal in handheld mode.

A straight port for $50 and no PC release. A far cry from the rumors it would be a remaster or even a remake. Oh well.

Anticlimactic announcement kinda hurts GTA4 and Midnight Club LA's chances but I still believe. A rumor last year suggested R* killed the re-releases of RDR1 and GTA4 and not it's not true. Give me all, Rocky!

Housers did not hate Nintendo. It was Zelnick, CEO of take Two, distanced the company from Nintendo (and Wii) after the Manhunt 2 scandal.

Housers actually love Nintendo very much. Dan Houser had an interview in ONM and said they loved Game Boy and it was their personal decision to bring GTA to the platform.

Finally, this is the Rockstar game I have been waiting to play the most.

I know this game had it's scandals, but what happened with the Wii/Nintendo?
It was rated AO by ESRB and the press went after it, especially for it being released on "family friendly" Wii ( nintendo never promised Wii to be a family friendly console anyway). They toned down the game but Wii unfortunately lost Rockstar support. A rumor (i believe from IGN) said they were planning even more Wii ports before the scandal (possibly even GTA) but it never happened, obviously.

But Wii did get one of the better R* games, Bully.

Dan Houser has crazy respect for Nintendo...

Yup! The Housers love Nintendo, and one of the driving reasons behind Chinatown Wars existing is because they wanted a Nintendo GTA that gen like they had had every gen.

However, speaking of Chinatown Wars, it was actually not Manhunt 2 that finally made T2 reassess their platform strategy towards Nintendo (until the Switch came along), it was Chinatown Wars bombing. They had expected 16 million units of lifetime sales for it, and when it did a fraction of that, they lost faith in the Nintendo audience being a good match for their content, and pared back all but the family friendly fare.

Switch has marked a reversal of this trend

Like so (plus games like XCOM, Civ 6, LA Noire, Bioshock all doing very well on it)

Double Eleven Studios, have they released much on Switch before?
Wiki lists them as working on the following games that are on Switch (not clear if they worked on the Switch versions per se): Songbringer, Lego Harry Potter Years 1-4 and 5-7, Prison Architect, and Minecraft Dungeons.

if this is true, this really fuckin sucks and adds more to the pain.

At least on Switch I always expected 30fps.

I understand the frustration around them not giving the 60fps option on at least PS4 Pro power profiles though, they really do not give a fuck lol

Ahh ok, I played Minecraft Dungeons and it wasn’t bad, bit hitchy but nothing major.
