StarTopic Future Nintendo Hardware & Technology Speculation & Discussion |ST| (New Staff Post, Please read)

I’m just glad that we actually know for sure now that it’s gonna be another hybrid like the current Switch. The whole LCD vs OLED screen thing isn’t a big deal for me since I play my Switch in docked mode most of the time anyway and I’m sure that LCD screens nowadays can be made in such a way that there’s not as much of a sacrifice in visual quality and color contrast compared to OLEDs. I still hope that it will launch in March or April similar to the current Switch as I think Holiday 2024 is kinda pushing it in terms of how long Nintendo wants to keep milking the success of the Switch and anything after that would be too late as the Switch’s momentum would probably die out completely by that point even if it still gets big games. I’ll still get it no matter what as long as it is as powerful as everyone says it’ll be, has backwards compatibility with current Switch games, and NO MORE JOY-CON DRIFT.

.

This is not confirmed yet.

Nothing is “confirmed”. The console using Drake isn’t even “confirmed”. It’s you saying ‘us fami lot know it all’…

The chances of 2023 are non existent though based on my own reading of the situation.

I was just referring to them appearing alongside regular 3DS games in the 3DS menus and shop. Still a hardware based compatibility mode, but a bit more integrated into the OS than we got on the Wii U.
The digital Wii titles on Wii U actually got basically to that same level of integration. They had a custom launcher that would bypass the Wii menu and reboot back to the Wii U OS when exited.

In some ways, being more software oriented should simplify things, since the games will, in many important ways, still be running functionally natively on the same underlying OS that they'd be running on on their original hardware. As you said, though, it may not be entirely finished at this point, and it's really not something developers need to know. I think we have reason to believe that Nintendo tends to hide more user-oriented features from early developer builds of the OS before they're publicly known, and insofar as the BC mode may be a development target, that is probably not the sort of work they'd be handing out pre-announcement devkits for.

I completely forgot about the digital Wii games on Wii U, good point!

Nintendo would problem only use MiniLED if there were huge electricity benefits compared to OLED (which MiniLED manufacturers say there are, but...)

I would guess it would be a lot more expensive than OLED because no one uses it.

Why does the rumor file list Samsung as the foundry though.

Short version: no, it will not be out of date

Slightly longer version - tech moves way way slower than most people image. There are basically no major improvements in the design of GPUs or CPUs in the last 5 years - plenty of minor improvements, but nothing huge.

What's changed over those 5 years is the process node - how small you can make a chip. Almost everyone here expects that Nvidia and Nintendo will use TSMC 4N, basically the most advanced process node currently available.

Looking at the "minor" improvements that Drake doesn't have, even those are fairly small on the ground.

Okay, let's make a distinction here that will help. "Drake" is the name of the chip that is in the Next Generation Switch. Switch 2 (or SwitchNG or redacted, or whatever the hell you wanna call it) is the console made with that chip. "Van Gogh" is the name of the chip in the Steam Deck.

Drake has more CPU cores, GPU cores, and a more advanced process node than Van Gogh. However, basically no one expects Nintendo to opt to used as much electricity as the Steam Deck, or to build a device that phsycially huge, with it's giant battery and huge cooling system. So we're all betting that Nintendo will take some of those advantages in Drake and use them to make a powerful device, but hit a limit where they instead spend the rest of those advantages on making a small device with decent battery life

A second distinction - the "slightly weaker than Steam Deck" mostly comes from trying to compare apples to apples. The Steam Deck doesn't have a real "docked" mode, so we're comparing the estimated Switch 2 handheld mode to Steam Deck. Plugged up to the TV, I would expect it to exceed the Steam Deck by a comfortable margin, even being super conservative.
What a terrific answer. I didn't understand the issues involved at all and now they're as clear as day. I'm grateful - and very relieved!

Seriously, you are a top tier poster. This stuff is so valuable to those of us who don't really understand hardware technology.

Between now and even October (as Brazil have it's own event with Nintendo here) things will get a little interesting

I don't even understand what these links are trying to say as I never looked too deeply into the stolen NVIDIA files.

But they are used to say Samsung is the foundry in the rumor file.

unrelated to Nintendo but this tweet reminded me of the CMA redactions that was discussed here before lol

when the switch 2 launches everyone has to change their avatar to the switch 2 logo

LCD is a big deal for me as I mainly play handheld. Another thing people don't mention enough is the advantage of OLED having smaller bezels resulting in a larger screen. If we go back to LCD would we be getting a smaller screen again as well. Another interesting thing to point out is if games continue to come out on Switch 1, there are many games, especially indie games that won't benefit with better graphics so these games would look better on Switch OLED due to the screen. For example a game like Mario Wonder or an indie game like Hollow Knight would look better on Switch OLED rather than Switch 2 as the extra horsepower can't really makes these games look better on Switch 2. It may stop people getting rid of their Switch OLED just for these games.

For me personally I'm going to wait for the OLED revision if this happens, it's not even the case of being disappointed it's just because of the crazy backlog of games I have on Switch 1. If Switch 2 had a OLED screen I wouldn't have bought many new games anyways and just played my backlog on Switch 2 if it also had OLED.

Could this mean that one of the gimmicks/features of the new system is the use of AI and ML (via Tensor Cores, maybe) in diverse ways to improve the gaming experience (Like a learning AI that changes its difficulty based on the player's action, or procedurally-generated worlds/content that feels hand-crafted (i don't really know the uses AI could have in a heavily optimized system, I might be talking bs)).

TL;DR - LCD as mentioned in the VGC article can very possibly be referring to miniLED, which can (and already does in some instances) surpass OLED in quality in several metrics.
I personally cannot find any evidence that Sharp manufactures miniLED panels. There are Sharp badged miniLED TVs, but those panels may be sourced form other Hon Hai Foxconn group of companies.

Also, if we take the VGC report at face value, the LCD was chosen because it’s cheaper than OLED. However as the panel size decreases, the miniLED panel becomes more expensive than OLED (the opposite is true as the size increases; hence the popularity of miniLED TVs). This is why no company has ever introduced a phone with a miniLED display, and even Apple is giving up on the iPad-sized miniLED panels.

I actually own a miniLED monitor (not TV), and can honest say that it’s good for watching videos but not so great for UI or text due to blooming. My OLED monitor performs better all things considered.

i want to be compensated for pain and suffering.
They take advantage of the fact that we eventually get new hardware, which we even have to buy ourselves, is already enough to compensate us. Regardless of how long it takes and how much we have to suffer.

I don't think this has anything to do with the display technology. Nintendo could offer a larger LCD than the LCD in the current Switch, they could offer a smaller one, hell they could offer a 16:10 display.

There are also a number of improvements that Nintendo could offer over the current LCD screen. The could go with optical bonding instead of air gap bonding, HDR10 support, 120Hz refresh higher pixel density and/or resolution - not to say they will, but there are substantial improvements possible over the launch Switch screen

I'm sorry for destroying your "fun" moment with Andy
But this VGC report is solid, have multiple sources, aligns with my and NashWaddle reports and is corroborated by Eurogamer too

until Nintendo confirm the Switch sucessor is gonna launch in 2024 or later, i gonna treat this VGC report ,as a rumor.

Sorry bud this is famiboards, we only trust Nate "Jesus Christ" The Hate and The big N.
I wonder how long the OLED grieving period will be lol.
It will not end. If Nate does his podcast and tells people he heard the console won't have an OLED people will bring it up in every following rumour till nintendo talks about the basic specs.

I don't understand what your point is, I guess. I haven't seen anyone say that they want OLED more than backwards compatibility. I don't really understand why you're comparing the two.
everyone here is making such a huge fuzz, because Switch sucessor is gonna have LCD display, for me, OLED display is just a fancy display, you all should be worried about backward compatiblty, oh no! i cant see Ganondorf cloak in my Switch OLED, who cares about this? i care if i can or not play my games on the successor, this is more concering for the gamers.

I don't think anyone really is saying OLED is more important it's just weird to get an upgrade and then have a downgrade/sidegrade in the next system

I don't want to speak for anyone - and we have several game journalists in thread, at least two with credible track records. Everyone will have their own sets of sources, and their own standard for "sufficiently confirmed to report on." And that can result in a lot of foot shooting, and Andy Robinson has a bit of foot shooting in his record, so I don't blame folks for being dubious

This thread gets enough attention that I think a few folk who hear stuff from the industry have been more reluctant to talk here, and as I am not a journalist, it's not like I've got 8 sources I can run down and cross-confirm. But for what it's worth, Andy's statements match the sorts of things that devs have been saying amongst themselves/friends for the last month since devkits went out more widely. I was chatting with a couple of thread folks offline just the other day about some aspects that showed up in Andy's article, that I didn't feel comfortable sharing here.

Right now, a hundred journalists are shaking trees and writing their "...can also confirm" articles, and it's telling that Eurogamer went up with theirs immediately. The most important thing for us fans at this moment is probably to keep and eye out for when journalists mix speculation with direct reporting from sources.

The only reason to change (maybe... ) the Oled screen type is if something has changed in the screen itself, thus preventing them from reusing the same screen as the Oled model that they will surely have in abundance as Switch will continue to exist.
Resolution, technology, size... if confirmed, I guess something might have changed.
I think this is a great point

Am I reading right that devkits went out around a month ago? I wonder if that was the first wave or a new wave

Something I find semi-fascinating, semi-worrying is the seeming need for outlets to share details that only they have. For example, the VGC report mentioned the screen and gestured at the topic of BC, while Eurogamer didn't have those details. But Eurogamer did have more confidence in the release window, underscored by them putting "late 2024" in their headline where the VGC article didn't. And I kind of cynically suspect that this is what led to those tenuous details being included in the VGC article when they really shouldn't have been. If all they said was "hybrid console due out in 2024, uses cartridges," that's probably information that everyone else has, putting you lower on the totem pole.

LCD display/panel tecnology has advanced over the past decades, the LCD display Switch sucessor is using is not the same LCD panel/display Switch used, it could be a far more superior LCD, far better then any OLED display, only by having the console in hand you can see it better display
