Discussion Cloud Versions of Kingdom Hearts games coming to Switch

Let's.... ease up on calling devs lazy.
I could see this as Square Enix being cheap, but there is zero reason for anybody to accuse devs as being "lazy" other than just wanting to insult someone and you want to disregard their statement that porting the games to the Switch would be too technologically difficult.
I'm not calling anyone lazy. This is Square being unwilling to put in the investment for solid efforts. They're actively refusing to allocate staff for proper ports.

That seems far more likely, yeah.

God damn I wish I could have all three of these games on my shelf...

Let's.... ease up on calling devs lazy.
The devs are almost certainly not the people making the decision to bring a Cloud version vs. a native version.

I could see this as Square Enix being cheap.
SE also made a statement that porting the games to the Switch would be too technologically difficult, and they may not want to pay for the time it would take to solve it.
It could also be Disney's fault, as @Yoshifan31 suggested.

There is a variety of valid ways this could be the case, but calling devs "lazy" is borne from ignorance about the work that goes into development and just comes across as wanting to insult someone.
I definitely think this is more Square being cheap than devs being lazy

It's almost assuredly about them not wanting to shell out for higher capacity game cards. I definitely agree that calling devs lazy is awful, it's more often the case that the publisher is being cheap.
Could have gone with digital only, in that case.

It's worth considering too that if there was a plan to have a more capable switch out by this point originally (obviously unknown itself so this is just spitballing) that that could have had an impact on how these games would be brought to the platform, for the time being or in general. Generally hard to pass judgment without full context but I definitely feel people's disappointment. We definitely do not have the infrastructure conducive toward an environment where cloud gaming is a good/dependable time where I'm at in Scotland lol

My guess is that native ports are going to be exclusive to the DLSS model*.
One could only hope

I imagine the entire reasoning behind introducing the Cloud Version concept is to allow a form of backwards-compatibility for games released on future hardware.

Same, though I would be fine with just the collections. Since yes, KH3 was always a longshot considering even a PS4 struggles with it. Yet the collections could be done, I mean if the issue is them cheaping out on cartridges, then split 1.5 + 2.5 and make the Union X movie from 2.8 a digital download.

Yeah, who knows with Square Enix? Square Enix is infamous for making weird decisions from time to time.

I agree with this. It was a comment made in haste in my initial reaction to the news. I will edit and be more careful going forward.

Did they disclose whether these games are running PC cloud or PS Now cloud?
I would guess that PS? The trailer mentioned it was PS4 footage. It would be strange to show the PS4 footage, but then make the streamed version the PC one.

The very obvious reason why those are Cloud versions is that 1.5+2.5 on PS4 is already like 60gbs. And you can't really downgrade them, those are PS2 titles already.

Blame Nintendo for not having affordable cartridges, I guess.

Disgusting, who the hell would pay serious money for that?!
I know someone who's willing to pay for cloud versions of Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 + 2.5 Remix, Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue, and Kingdom Hearts 3. So my guess is diehard Kingdom Hearts fans.

I was watching this live, my hype went so high then CRASHED. I never experienced this before lmao. God damn it Square...I just wanted 1.5 and 2.5 on Switch natively.

Was it Nate or someone else who said they couldn't fit the 2.8 collection into a Switch cart except the really expensive one so SE decided it wasn't enough profit margins to do it? Aka the same problem GTAV ran into.

Most games can be compressed quite a lot with no downgrades. I'd be shocked if these games had some fundamental issue preventing the file size from being compressed further.

A digital-only version, like Doom Eternal, would have been way better than this.
This is definitely a new low by third parties on switch, like a cloud version of a ps2 game? If it was something niche I could somewhat understand, but S-E is so cheap that they refuse to fund ports of two of their flagship games for a super popular platform.

Aside that the collections (1.5 and 2.5) individually are just 20 - 22 GB. Some compressing and making the 358/2 Days / Re:Coded a download, should have them fit in a 16GB cartridge.

Diehard over here, it will be a skio for me... but will definitely get that chess set and luggage suitcase.

Digital only versions on a platform that sells the vast majority of its software at retail is just not viable for most companies.

It's not about being cheap, it's the very obvious limitations of Nintendo's hardware. Square has ported countless games to the console, there's a reason why an obvious candidate for those ports has not happened until now and this is the reason.

Clearly they couldn't, there's a lot of games in those collections.

I appreciate that a lot, really. It's something I take seriously as a discussion quality concern.
Not that I think people here would do this at all, but on Other Sites it leads to attacking dev teams, and on occasion, specific devs themselves.
It's also just insulting to devs everywhere, including myself.

Do you have any evidence whatsoever that this is a hardware limitation issue, and not an issue with the games' original codebase being too difficult to port?
I'm not sure I understand your reasoning about hardware limitations when you clearly acknowledge that Doom Eternal has a native Switch port.

Certainly wouldn't be the first Switch game with a mandatory download.

No more lazy dev rhetoric only cheap ass publisher rhetoric /s just in case

I'll still get them though, it'll be my first time playing through the entire series and it's about goddamn time I can finally do so on a singular console that I actually own and play frequently.

Mandatory download to download like over a hundred gigs?

1.5+2.5 is about 60gbs big. 2.8 is about 30 more. And then III is about 40 lol. If you buy the KH collection on PS4, it's about 130gbs total. Just unfeasible on Switch, regardless of any compression black magic.

I highly doubt the Nintendo Switch's going to struggle running remastered PlayStation 2, PlayStation Portable, and Nintendo 3DS games.

These are being presented as 3 separate games. Not sure why you're combining them.

Doesn't it include like story recaps/videos and stuff like that? I imagine those are fairly large.

They are sold as a bundle as well. The point is to play all of them.
It would not only be impossible to sell them at retail, unless you think it would go down any easier to sell 1.5+2.5, which costs like 10 bucks on PS4 at a full 60$ price on switch with a mandatory download of 30 gbs, and then separately sell at full price 2.8 and 3 because of those same limitations, but also just impossible to sell a collection at all.

It includes a total of ten games, three of them being hours-long video recaps, as well as a full scale PS4/Xbox game with its DLC.

They're allowed to put multiple Switch carts in a box.

Who does that? Do you think any publisher is going to buy several 32gbs Switch cartridges to sell a single game, when just using one already costs an enormous sum compared to a regular Blu-Ray? It's time to come down to reality.

What's the pricing on the Cloud versions?

Because I very much doubt it's going to be much lower than native versions would be.

Also I'm fairly sure if you want all the game on Xbox and PC you have to pay full price for them separately.

We don't know yet, but we know there's a big collection that includes all of them (unlike on Xbox or PC).

Besides, the point is that it is unfeasible to sell these at retail. And unlike PC and Xbox, the size of the digital market on Switch (or the lack of a Game Pass service) makes a digital only release for these titles pointless.

This is the most recent example that comes to mind, and this is waaaaaaaaaay more niche than Kingdom Hearts.

"They can't put the games on a single cart" simply isn't a reasonable reason to downgrade all the way to cloud release, which is only barely above not releasing the games at all.

Very sad that 1.5 and 2.5 are cloud versions as well, but I only get time to play on my Switch so I still might give it a go - will probably wait for a sale though!

My man, this is a hundred dollars edition that has three games versus TEN for Kingdom Hearts. NMH1 and 2 are like one-two gigabytes each on the eshop. Would you buy the KH collection at 300 dollars that has all of the games on cartridges?
NMH1+2+3 is below 10gbs for the whole trilogy. KH is over 130.

Why would they port the PS4 versions of the games? PS3 versions of 1.5 + 2.5 are much smaller.

If the movies were a problem in terms of file size they could have replaced them by the actual DS games tbh

It’s just a huge missed opportunity. I have no idea how anyone involved would think that native ports of the KH games on Switch wouldn’t do well enough to completely cover costs, this is perhaps the biggest no-brainer port since the system’s release. This must be a Disney issue

Not really. They're still 20gbs each, so about 40 for 1.5 + 2.5. And then you have no choice for 2.8 and 3+ReMind since those are current-gen only.
