StarTopic Future Nintendo Hardware & Technology Speculation & Discussion |ST| (New Staff Post, Please read)

Tears of the Kingdom was problaby very expensive for Nintendo to make, and i assume Metroid Prime 4 will too, given all the developers Retro Studios has been hiring for the game

Pikmin 4 is a solid step up from 3 as well. And these are only games we know about. Nintendo might not be pouring 220 million into a single game (no idea what Tears cost), but they are definitely improving their products.

Im really eager to see Prime 4 and 3D Mario if both take advantage of the new tech.

Looks like things might get interesting soon. :)

I have been lurking for a while and gotta say... I love all this expectations... Joined Famiboards for this.
Almost don't want the mystery to end... Almost.

After [redacted] is revealed and released what will be of this thread?

(Sorry for any grammar error. English is not my native language)

somewhere out there, Raccoon's ear is involuntarily twitching and he doesn't know why
Oh, you just know every strand of fur on that critter's body is standing on end. It's enough to drive a raccoon mad.

I've actually wondered about this myself. The way we handle Direct Speculation threads is that they'll be open until the announcement, at which point they're closed and the actual Direct discussion thread opens. I'd sorta expect that might be the case here?

But this thread has technically existed since before Famiboards itself, so the thought of it being closed seems.. weird.

@Dakhil could probably stand a rest though 😅

Existing joycons not being compatible makes a lot of sense when you consider most/all of them are a ticking timebomb that Nintendo is on the hook to repair.

I was already expecting the joy-cons to not be compatible (physically), but I just hope it is not only because of the size of it, but because (or also because) the way of connecting them is totally new (of course, it's just a rumor, I know).

Just reading that the shoulder buttons are more like the ones on the Pro Con (which I love) already makes me a bit excited.

Talk about the Switch Lite 2, obviously. In all seriousness, this thread might be closed indefinitely or, as @chocolate_supra suggested, function in a similar manner to the Direct threads. Otherwise, it's gonna be bittersweet once that time comes.
To be clear, the manner in which the Direct threads work would have this thread closed indefinitely. And then a new official Super Switch Discussion ST opened.

The word "expected" always shows up a lot in these things. As we've discussed in the past with Nikkei articles, if they don't include explicit confirmation of non-public info, or familiar phrases like "according to people with knowledge of the matter," then it's probably not even intended as reporting on real info, just speculation, industry expectations, etc. And the less reputable the outlet, the more likely it is for them to make these statements frivolously, knowing they won't face much scrutiny and having the plausible justification that they weren't claiming to report anything beyond speculation anyway.

We've had a brief discussion on the matter internally. While nothing is certain, (and the announcement of the next system will likely come after my reign of terror has ended in September so don't take this as fact), this thread will likely be closed and archived until the sun explodes.

I mean, technically it [i[is[/i] simply a Future Hardware & Technology Speculation & Discussion thread, so clearly we run wild with whatever incomprehensible possibilities catch our fancy for some new hardware or technology. I'm still waiting for the Wii Vitality Sensor.

GameCube to Wii was very explicitly about allowing existing software development tools to continue to be used. At the time I incorrectly assumed they'd continue to release some games not built around motion control as GameCube games that might have expanded Wii features. But they just multiplatformed Twilight Princess, poached Super Paper Mario, and called it a day.

I see where you are coming from in that example, yes.

But it’s easy to move away from a system that sold 25 million and was essentially dead in terms of engagement compared to them turning their back on a system that sold 130+million and is at an all time high of user engagement and software sales.

And I don’t expect the Drake Switch to have a completely new and unique control scheme that revolutionizes Nintendo gameplay like the Wii did. I’m willing to be surprised, but I doubt it.

So, I don’t think they will treat the current Switch models like they did the Gamecube when it comes to future game development.

I guess uhh... actually fits in RAM without cutting out half of what's going on.

It actually takes a decent amount of RAM and bandwidth to make upscaling to 4K DLSS work. You would already need more then a the original Switch’s 4gb RAM to have DLSS 4K work in performance mode.

If their goal is just to make Switch software run decently at 4K, either they overdeveloped the T239, or their test case for "before" were things like Witcher 3 and Xenoblade 2 which could get to pretty low resolutions. Mario Kart 8 or Smash could maybe get to 6K60 or 4K120, enough so that DLSS might not be able to keep up in a helpful way. Unless maybe they blow some resources on ray tracing to slow it down.

Yea like I said in another post, some people call it “overdeveloped” or “overkill” if the idea was to just have Mario Kart at 4K with some better graphics.

There are many switch games that push a lot more than Mario Kart

And my argument has always been that DLSS (or something very much like it) is the future for Nintendo.

The bane of their existence has always been to upgrade hardware to push for native rendering (as close as they can get) while sacrifice framerate to get there (even going down to 15fps for the n64 era)

Using AI solves this problem for their future. They will really never have to rely on using hardware to render games natively again.

No matter what future screens and screen refreshes come, doesn’t matter.

So, I think they realize this is their future. Nvidia assuredly convinced them this is their future.

So when people say “if running ToTK at 4K/60fps with some better graphics is the goal with Drake Switch…why the overkill?”

I would say, because they want to start developing with the DLSS tools in mind now, during success, and get comfortable with it for the future…than pushing it off and dealing with it sometime later when they are trying to build from the ground up and being flat footed.

This is the mistake they made going from Wii and then trying to switch development into HD gaming with the Wii U.

Kinda thought so, gotcha.

Now that's the spirit.

If its launching H1 2024, we can expect leaks in the next months.

If its launching at H2 2024, I would suggest to wait a little further, until like early next year.

Agreed. I'm hoping that some industry chatter coming out of Gamescom and TGS trickles down to our ears and gives us a firmer indication of the timeline we're looking at. (Assuming Gamescom and TGS are like the E3 of old where a lot of closed-door, on-the-floor conversations can happen.)

I recall an NX report by them back in March 2016 saying production could ramp up in H2 2016 but the entire article was later clarified as investor speculation. Could be similar case here.
@NateDrake Sorry I forgot to hide my previous post. Would you please edit out the quote? Much appreciated.
