StarTopic Future Nintendo Hardware & Technology Speculation & Discussion |ST| (New Staff Post, Please read)

Y’all should do a community service and TL;DR his videos. They’re a bit unbearable to watch 😅
the TL;DR is his thumbnails and youtube video titles. his videos usually just go into detail why he thinks X dev may be doing a Switch 2 game and he goes through his evidence. Uusually his own original research scraping Linkedin profiles and job postings.

The nice thing about him IMHO is he isn't stuck in the echo chamber of repeating 4chan/twitter/journalist leaks

First, thanks everyone who reached out privately. Ya'll are cool.

Second, let's do some speculating/wishing. What do ya'll want from the next console other than performance. Squishy triggers? A 1080p screen? A second screen? New colors? It can be literally anything.

The rules are - reply to this message directly, but no judging each other's picks. No telling folks why it's not possible, or what it's unlikely, or why the shouldn't want it. I just want people to say what they imagine the next thing might have. It's cool if it's a weird niche thing, it's cool if it's boring. Just let me know. I'm a little tired of this rut of "the same but better" and odds are Nintendo has one surprise cooking, and if it's yours, I want to celebrate that you get your weird niche thing!
Fix the d-pad on the pro controller, and put a headphone jack on it as well. It's simple, but probably my most wanted things unrelated to performance.

Quick Resume-like feature

That’s all.

A portable having that would be huge. HUGE.

I really really want a built in game. Something that can really give the console identity from the get-go. So many of my memories of the wii were just wii sports. Something like a Nintendo Land to introduce people to all the IP would be so amazing. I know there are a bunch of free games on the eshop now but built in nintendo made games just hit DIFFERENT.

I think I'd also like Streetpass to return. I feel like it brought a real sense of community to Nintendo players. It made me talk to my neighbour, meet new people etc. Really underrated. Gaming feels less close than ever IMO and it was so personal I really miss that little green light 😭

I hope they can bring back miiverse in some way or find a fun way to do online friendly stuff.

I don't have anything else in mind particularly, I just hope this next gen for nintendo is weird and wacky even if there aren't major hardware gimmicks. Also they need to just bring back Mii's in full force because they're literally the only people who have a problem with them...

Hey there - love this idea! I'm a long-time lurker since the early days but never had the technical chops to ask insightful or relevant discussions that hadn't been had before (although learned a lot thanks to you wonderful folks).

I just want some sort of new input that shifts the controller paradigm a bit. Scrolling shoulder buttons would be sweet but not expecting them. As someone interested in health, something like a heart rate sensor/pedometer (maybe enhanced functionality via wearable integration?) would be interesting. They've flirted with ideas in the past, but would be curious to see how that could be further blended in a new device

a better way to interact with friends IRL and people you meet online. Basically DMs/integrated VC and some kind of communications dashboard

I was watching it, and got to almost 3 minutes. I’m going to be honest, I think he’s misinterpreting that part that included the switch. The switch was simply an example, as it is a current gen console and they are looking for people with experience shipping games on consoles or PC. Switch being included widens their reach of potential people and makes the search more favorable to appear for people who are looking for a job.

Saying “(PlayStation 5, XBox Series or Switch)” I think makes it pretty clear.

They need people pretty much for this development studio. And of course, they are hiring more people. So, when you have a dev studio looking for people, they’ll attempt to make it more favorable/likely.

It’s like a reverse filter in a sense.

I wouldn’t read much into this or these job listings as “oh it means it’ll include the switch or switch 2”, but as “they’re looking for anyone that fits this job perfectly, even those that have developed or delivered with the switch, it’s not limited to just PS5/XBS and PC”

That doesn’t matter concerning how Nintendo positions it. They aren’t going to need to position it like Microsoft or Sony has to position hardware as they are primarily a modern 3rd party gaming platform/set of services.

Nintendo isn’t that. The Switch platform certainly isn’t that.
Just because Nintendo's first party is extremely successful doesn't discount the reality of there being thousands of third party games on Switch that collectively make up half of game sales.

And even if Nintendo is Nintendo and thus can't be expected to act like Sony or MS: Mightn't we expect them to act like Nintendo has repeatedly when major new hardware releases?

not realistically....regardless of node T239 is a larger die than Erista, the device around it is probably gonna be larger, the storage will have to be more expensive else its suicide, UFS is definetely more expensive than emmc, if they reuse the same oled they could save money there but I have difficulty they would leave that untouched, Nintendo always had a screen improvement with every portable I dont believe this would be an exception, if not in terms of resolution then at least in terms of color range, brightness, etc.

Battery density may have improved a lot but how about the costs per milliamp hour? The dock may require a better Realtek chip, the cooling assembly in the switch was a pitiful joke so I am definitely sure they'd have to improve that to avoid issues with T239, there are so many bits and pieces that are bound to raise cost, especially T239 itself, other 4nm (assuming it even is 4nm) ARM chips arent very cheap...let alone one with a gpu that large, i think they will have a significantly higher BoM and target a 399.99$ MSRP
Slightly less late reply,
1. We have no real idea of the size of Drake. And considering how tiny Lovelace GPUs are on TSMC 4N, it could be smaller considering the full AD107 die is only 146mm2 for a 24SM GPU vs the over 300mm2 for Erista. I say Drake can likely squeeze under 200mm2 with half the SMs swapped out for 8 A78C on 4N.

2. UFS actually may be cheaper than, or at least close in cost to, some varieties of eMMC. At least at scale considering apple is seemingly ditching eMMC soon along with mid-low range Android devices also ditching eMMC, although this is mainly depending on the type and speed of UFS used and whatnot.

3. The SWOLED's screen is perfectly fine, and I would see it as a price saving point that would work. Maybe some firmware/software to validate HDR or a manually set 40hz mode.

4.Battery density has grown vastly and when that happens cost/MAh shrinks generally too, but I will concede I don't know the most about this. But 40WHr seems pretty cheap nowadays considering the Steam Deck and the ROG Ally fit them well at their price points.

5. The cooling assembly for OG Switch was overbuilt even for Erista. There's a reason the Switch over clocking scene exists at all without needing exotic coolers built.

6. It's TSMC4N very most likely, the user Thraktor on this forum breaks down why 8N and pretty much all other nodes falter in either sheer size or power consumption for a SoC of the sheer scale of Drake, linked here.

https://famiboards.com/threads/futu...-staff-posts-before-commenting.55/post-683773

7. We don't know what Nintendo will price Drake at. But it most certainly will likely be due to the price of the SoC itself rather than most other factors considering RAM and Storage can get gotten cheap lately. Speculating on cost assumes a lot we don't really know

I want them to add pressure sensitive digital triggers. I feel like GameCube-like analog triggers would be hell for games that require quick ZL/ZR inputs like rhythm games. Longer recording + Twitch/Discord streaming as well, and SD Express support. No, I don't care that it's a dead-end format.

Simple, you're more likely to keep buying games for your 4K Switch for the next 10 years than you are for an OLED Switch.

Eh…my wife and son will be PERFECTLY fine playing the new Animal Crossing, new Mario Kart, new 3D Mario on the OLED in 2028.

Only enthusiasts like me will need to be further engaged by playing them on state of the art Nintendo hardware.

What’s wrong with having the the multiple options for both?

Man I don't agree at all. Nintendo does rely on 3rd party gaming revenue, skimming on 3rd party sales is the literal point of maintaining your own platform. The ability for switch to run at least a a good chunk of current gen games was definately part of why it sold so well

Man I don’t agree at all. What are the big 3rd party ps4/one multiplats that gave the Switch it’s monstrous sales?

I can’t find any.

Out of the top 20 best selling Xbox one games and top 20
best selling Ps4 games, I can list 15 big 3rd party multiplats.

I can’t do this for Switch.

look how many games sold BEST on switch like Monster Hunter, Minecraft, sonic, dragonball, many of them sell 1/2 mill+.

Ok, now you are getting into the weeds and losing the point.

Monster Hunter was a 3rd party exclusive. That’s not what I’m talking about.

Minecraft and Sonic and dragonball could have been ps3/Wii U games for the most part.

I thought it was clear when we are talking about major 3rd party multiplats we were talking about the type of games that sell best on Xboxes and PlayStations. You were the one that mentioned “current gen games”. Not Lego games and Just dances and Minecraft’s lol.

Sure Nintendo relies more on its 1st party IP than Sony, but honestly I don't think its by a lot

Uh it’s a lot. 85-90% of PlayStation revenue comes from 3rd party sales, 85-90% of Nintendo revenue comes from 1st party sales.

PlayStation is directly competing against any platform trying to be a 3rd party multiplat gaming service platform….Nintendo isn’t.

Also Nintendo sell their console for a profit, if anything Nintendo wants you to jump to the new device more than Sony does.

Nintendo profit comes from 1st party game sales. Very little comes from hardware.

Don't get me wrong a new device that plays a prettier new mario kart, or the old one at 4k will probably be enough to make up a very large chunk of Redrakted sales, but without some current gen 3rd party the Switch does not do the numbers it does.

Really? I still don’t see it. Like what “current gen” multiplat games were big Switch system sellers

The biggest 3rd party multiplats games on Switch were also ones you can find on mobile devices.

Heck the potential for easier COD game ports alone is a pretty big deal.

For a Nintendo portable machine? lol no…just no. It would sell as well as Witcher 3 or Wolfenstein. Which weren’t that great enough sales to bother with further similar ports anyways.

Nintendo does NOT play the same game as Sony or Microsoft when it comes to their gaming platform.

1. I think I’d like a back facing camera either on the console or the joycons for another attempt at AR

2. I would like street pass to come back in some way. I envision “Street Pass Station” where your mii goes on a train or something to your phone app. Then your phone does the street passing and you come back and sync what you found.

3. I think it would be really cool to convert tomodachi/miitomo into your account profile. Beating games or “accomplishments” get you different collectibles, clothes, Pets, wallpapers, decorations and all that. Friends and others can see your “apartment” and stuff. 3rd parties can also contribute items to this system.

4. I think it would be neat to have a higher resolution 3D screen. Imagine a 2560x720 screen (double horizontal like 3DS) a 3D screen that big and in your face would be pretty awesome and you could play full screen 2 player in table top.

My biggest want is a simple one. That Redacted is comfortable to play in handheld mode. As someone who has spent countless hours on the GBA, DS, 3DS, and Wii U gamepad, the Switch's ergonomics just don't do it for me.

On a more niche note, I would also like if they could redesign the right joy con to be better suited for Wii pointer controls. I'd happily buy a new sensor bar if it meant better aiming. I don't expect this (or even the above) request to be granted, but it'd be pretty cool if either happened.

Taking this out of hide tags since it’s already out there.

NX was not the switch’s only code name. It’s the one they announced to the public.

The NX evolved out of a project called Indy, to make a successor to the 3DS. The name “Switch” was actually picked before the code name NX as I understand it.

At Nvidia, chips have a code name, TX1’s was Erista. But Nvidia also have a code name for their hardware, based on Norse mythology. Even though Nvidia wasn’t developing Switch themselves, development of the software created the need for a test motherboard. These prototype Switch’s were called Odin, and you can still find references to that in various chip part numbers on the Switch motherboard.

Internally, the Switch calls itself the NX. The software platform (NVN and some OS services) was built while the hardware was being finalized, unlike the Wii or Wii which shared their graphics stacks with the GameCube. That was just called GX. My understanding is that the official NVN docs refer to “the NX device” and that in genera treats the Switch family of systems - the Lite, the OLED and the base model as “the NX platform”

It should be unsurprising to hear developers refer to “the version of NX that runs NVN2” as NX2. I have no idea if the docs will do the same, but it wouldn't surprise me.

It would surprise me to see it on the developer portal, not because I think Nintendo wouldn't use that designation, but because I think Nintendo wouldn't want to use the developer portal until they're in official pre-launch. It's easier to just setup a private website elsewhere, and keep everything segregated. Eventually, Nintendo will want build submissions to be automated, but right now, partners are likely submitting intentionally incomplete builds for working with Nintendo, and Nintendo definitely doesn't want to have the submission queue miss a flag and publish Red Dead Redemption 3 to the eShop by accident.
I want Nintendo to push a new external storage format. Not just because of the switch but because MicroSD has become stagnant in performance terms and the industry has no incentive to do anything differently. Ideally I'd want Nintendo to use a standard that makes UHS 1 MicroSD incompatible in the current switch to trigger mass adoption of the new standard.

I remember reading a piece about how UFS Card or SD Express would enable something like a desktop mini pc or laptop etc to have it's entire OS, Apps etc stored on the medium and you could simply carry the card with you, pop it in and work, then if you need to move location just pop it out and store your current session, move location, put it into another hardware device and carry on working.

I thought that was a great example of how technology can be used to change the way we think about hardware (dedicated storage medium), and whilst we have cloud that can do a similar thing, it still has application for a number of things.

But nope, we have seen zero adoption of these formats, Nintendo is well positioned to change that, I am hoping they do.

Ability to connect smartphones/switches to the console to use as additional screens/controllers. Not the way Everybody 1-2 Switch does it where it's just connecting to a website. I mean directly to the console in a way that would allow for the additional screens to be used games, including for emulating DS and 3DS. Bonus points if the joycons have an option to be hooked up to smartphones like Backbone does.

When Animal Crossing came out, it made me really want an Animal Crossing lobby as part of the Switch OS where you and your friends could gather when you turn on your Switch and see each other, chat, emote, do little minigames, leave messages, etc.

Why didn't 3DS games released in 2012 also release on the 150 million handhelds that were out there? Why didn't Wii U games released in 2013 also release on the 100 million consoles out there?

This should be obvious,

Completely different architectures. They needed completely disparate development teams to make the 3ds game or the Wii U game, and then port it to the DS/Wii. Too much divergent development. Main reasons why the combined handheld/home development in the first place.

It makes more sense to move away focus from the older hardware if the new hardware requires completely different development.

From everything I can gleen from this thread, this Drake SoC won’t require a completely different development focus. For the most part, it will take the Lite version of Switch games and make it 4k/60fps with better graphics.

I’m willing for someone to prove to me otherwise, though.

Except it's not just "game design" and has never been... Drake is a generational leap over switch, an actual game made for it will be like fifting TLOU2 in PS3. Not happening, and if it does it will never be the same game, there's only so much Nintendo can afford to downgrade until it's literally not the game they made.

I’ll make the argument Nintendo isn’t looking to make a TLOU2 or Starfield type Nintendo game in the next 5 years.

They can make epic/grand ToTK sized games for the next 5 years.

What most enthusiasts really want is to just play the Switch library of games with much better graphics and performance. Drake will accomplish this.

When people are talking about ergonomics, every single handheld is going to have a compromise somewhere, somehow. Like the Steam Deck has bad stick placements because the touchpads are required to be there for PC game compatibility and is SUPER big and heavy so it's less portable than the Switch. The 3DS is tiny and very portable, but I know people who hate playing action games on it. The Vita probably hits the best compromises of them all, but it doesn't have the screen size of the Switch or Steam Deck which offsets some of the ergonomic advantages.

No matter what, nothing will satisfy everyone. Stationary consoles already can't satisfy everyone with their bespoke controllers, handhelds have even less of a shot. You just have to hope that the dice you roll is the right one.

I find my field of vision is much, much greater when I'm playing handheld so I get sucked into the game a lot more than when I'm playing docked. I only really play docked if I want to just lounge my body out and don't feel like holding the whole Switch in my hands.
Not the guy you are replying too with this comment but I am also one of those of mostly plays handheld. I'd like to play dock but I just don't have the time anymore. For example, SMT V would have taken me a year to complete if I play dock but I can finish it in 2 months on handheld.

I really really REALLY want them to figure out the USB-C bandwidth stuff and let us plug in a hard drive or SSD or whatever and record to it indefinitely at 4K60 in HEVC, or at least 10 bit 1080p60. I just do this thing like where I upload my gameplay to yt and rewatch later because im weird and I’m also absolutely anal about video quality.

render the UI at 4K pls

Better friend system

also StreetPass 😸

...a second screen would be nice for a theoretical DS/3DS NSO offering.

Aside from that, Hall effect joysticks. I think that all of us could do without worrying about drift.

Edit:
@AshiodyneFX
I'm optimistic about NVENC improvements. At the minimum, it's Turing/Ampere generation of NVENC. Best case, it just outright inherits Orin's NVENC (which added AV1!)
So, fingers crossed for Orin's/AV1.

I don't think they will even use "Switch" in the name. I like to call it Switch 2 but they will use a different name to make it clear that it is not another model but a new console.

Nintendo Swap
Make sense letting go of the past names have always worked well with Nintendo

I think a lot of what I want is software-based.

The main feature that I want and that I think would benefit Nintendo a lot is implementing a "play local co-op online" feature like Steam and PlayStation have (or like how NSO does it, too). It would really expand the multiplayer experiences of many Switch games, which I'm just going to assume for this post will be playable on the next Nintendo console.

Another smaller thing I want is HDR support. I don't have an HDR TV, but Nintendo seems to be a common mention for "developers whose games would benefit from HDR." If Nintendo supports HDR, I'll probably get an HDR TV, and I'll be ready for all the colors to pop in the next Mario game.

For something more hardware-focused, I'd personally appreciate a docked-only model. I never play my Switch as a portable, and I imagine I could get the same performance for cheaper and in a smaller package if it only acted as a home console. Still, I think keeping a battery would be a nice idea, since I love that it protects against power outages.

I wouldn't mind an unusual controller or input method again. It's fun to look at a Nintendo device and think "How are they going to use THAT?" Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I recognize it's not always a success. It would make the console interesting, though. The Wii and DS were kind of magical for enabling so many fresh experiences.

And on that note, I want what I hope is a simple hardware request: bring back the Wii Sensor Bar tech. IR-based pointing on Wii was excellent! I'd love an optional accessory that lets me access those controls again. Or honestly, give me Wiimote+Nunchuk 2.0. The technology would be so much better now, and while I recognize the Joy-Con inherit a lot from the Wiimote, their size and reliability has me wishing for a Wii return instead.

Man I don’t agree at all. What are the big 3rd party ps4/one multiplats that gave the Switch it’s monstrous sales?
Selling over 200 Million software in FY 2023 sounds to me they pretty much need third parties, even when there is not a single third party game which rivals the sales of Nintendo First Party titles. Except for maybe Monster Hunter and Minecraft (of which we don‘t know the sales numbers but it‘s likely over 20 million).

Still the business of Nintendo dosen‘t work with First party games alone. In theory as long as Switch is selling, most third parties will decide to bring games to the platform if possible. But at some point this is getting harder and maybe not worth the money to invest the time for a Switch port. Not even for indie games, which are getting more complex too.

Now you can say, so what, as long as Nintendo is releasing new games for their platforms? Though getting continuously new third parties on your platform is something that even your average Joe is noticing.

Be it the various collaborations Nintendo is doing with third parties, miracle ports like Witcher 3, being it preceived as a JRPG machine, getting ports of old games, being the number 1 indie console or even something simple like receiving all Lego Games; all this contributes to their Nintendo Switch has Games for everyone that you can play everywhere at any time marketing. Something they push from day one and is in my opinion a huge part why the Switch is selling so well. It’s the quantity that matters to get a diverse user base that buys your product for all different kinds of reasons. I think past consoles have shown what happens when First Parties is the only thing that‘s left on a Nintendo console.

Or to put it in other words: You don‘t necessarily need to buy Nintendo titles to have fun on Switch. I know many people that own the console and don‘t have more than 1-3 first party titles.

I have quite a few hopes or wishes for the next system, nothing spec related, because i don't even care if for example it's going to have a 1080p screen or not (720p still looks fine and arguably is the more attractive choice for battery life anyway)
  • I'd like a d-pad on the left joy-con, if it's going to use joy-cons or something similar. I hate the seperated buttons, they're terrible for 2D games & menus.
  • Nintendo needs to improve the durability on the joy-con analog sticks. I don't want to see drift still being a thing on the successor, at least early on.
  • OLED screen, and if not, at least have a good quantum dot LCD.
  • Bluetooth headphone support from the very start and not letting us wait several years for such basic functions.
  • More robust kickstand like the OLED model.
  • The joy-cons should be more fixated in the rails. They're pretty wobbly. I heard the OLED has this improved but i don't have one so i can't confirm it.
  • Offer more color variants for the tablet at launch, instead of keeping it exclusively for the joy-cons and special edition SKUs like the ZOLED,
or alternatively, offer interchangeable back-plates like on the non-XL New 3DS model.
  • Better WLAN antenna to allow future Nintendo games with focus on online play such as Splatoon to run at a higher server tickrate 16hz
  • Probably very unlikely, but i want to see their online infrastructure expanded upon with party voice-chats and messaging. Don't care about achievements.
  • THEMES AND FOLDERS

At Nvidia, chips have a code name, TX1’s was Erista. But Nvidia also have a code name for their hardware, based on Norse mythology. Even though Nvidia wasn’t developing Switch themselves, development of the software created the need for a test motherboard. These prototype Switch’s were called Odin, and you can still find references to that in various chip part numbers on the Switch motherboard.
Odin wasn't just the codename of a dev board, the final hardware we all got is Odin (Odin MP).

Side rant:
Along with "odin" they also interchangeably use "abca2" and "icosa" since I guess only having one name for the hardware wasn't good enough for them.
That also wasn't good enough for them so each name has its own versioning scheme to describe the same hardware revisions (i.e. odin MP vs abca2 5.1 vs Icosa (no version)).
Horizon uses all three in different parts of the OS.
Thanks Nvidia/Nintendo :)

Something like Apples Find My Phone feature, so that the console can be find after my youngling forgets where the last left it. Maybe as an add on to the Switch Parental Controls app, to make the new matching go ping from the back of the sofa/under pillow/garden den etc. thinking about it, it’d be cool to have a selection of games noises rather than just a ‘ping’, like Mario going ‘It’sa Meee ….’

My eyes are bleeding at people using NX2 because it was on that fake screenshot. The power of fake news.

I’m going to create my own fakes with various names to see if anyone here starts to repeat them.
NX2 is easier to type because it's 3 characters long and it's better shorthand than "Drake Switch" or [redacted]
Don't give yourself too much credit.

As contrarian as it sounds, I just want an actual console again. I've always found the handheld aspect of the switch clunky and awkward. It's great on the go, but when I'm home it remains firmly docked and I'm on my second playthrough of TOTK and I just keep thinking to myself, every time it's clipping or chugging during intense loads, just give us a stable frame rate. Maybe even make two versions of the next iteration. A beefier home console and a separate dock-able less powered version.
We've been over this. Switch is 2015 ARM hardware.
2020-2023 ARM hardware has significantly better performance.

This is the performance bracket we're looking at next round

Games like Kingdom Hearts, RDR2 or Gotham Knights

I want them to add pressure sensitive digital triggers. I feel like GameCube-like analog triggers would be hell for games that require quick ZL/ZR inputs like rhythm games. Longer recording + Twitch/Discord streaming as well, and SD Express support. No, I don't care that it's a dead-end format.
Just need similar to the PS5 triggers, they're amazing.

I don't know why, but the name Super Nintendo Switch sounds pretty cool. I really hope that's the actual name of the Switch 2

Can't say I disagree with this!

I want colour, so bored of completely black consoles, black controllers (talking about Pro controllers), white at a push.
I want Gamecubeesque use of colour, e.g. different coloured buttons on the controller.
I want ethernet in dock (should be a given but Nintendo have form for going backwards with stuff like that).
I want better triggers and rumble (PS5 has set a high bar).
I want proper headset/headphone support.
I want a UI that runs at the native resolution of the games it supports, i.e. I can look at screenshots at their native rs (an utter travesty that was never addressed).
I want some Nintendo quirk that's not too quirky.
Most of all, I want a huge improvement in visual quality, I'm so fed up with low res textures (ground especially), jaggies, no aliasing, low resolution , no HDR etc.

My expectations would be more ergonomic Joy-Con and a 1080p screen, while something I'd LIKE to see would be capacitive, pressure sensitive shoulder buttons.

As someone interested in health, something like a heart rate sensor/pedometer (maybe enhanced functionality via wearable integration?) would be interesting. They've flirted with ideas in the past, but would be curious to see how that could be further blended in a new device
Technically that could be possible with an existing Joy-Con, with the right software.

Pressure sensitivity but don't ruin ZL and ZR? Join me on the boat of "pressure sensitive capacitive shoulder buttons"!

I'm the complete opposite. I never liked playing games on consoles and having to sit in front of a TV, while something about handhelds and their form factor just feel so much more inviting. I love the optionality the Switch provides and don't want it to go away, but handheld is generally the way for me 90% of the time.

No out of the box drift that became such an endemic issue that Nintendo had to offer free repairs (Which were a total hassle) would be lovely.

Again, I could never agree with this. Nothing about the handheld seems inviting, I think it's more to do with the immediate accessibility, picking up the switch and flicking it on just feels like picking up a phone and sitting on the sofa. Turning on a console and sitting in front a television ready to play a game does feel like more of a commitment, but that's exactly what I enjoy about gaming anyway. The aim for me is total immersion, I don't want to just casually sit on the sofa playing a game like TOTK.

I sound old and cranky but I think TikTok has rotted away so much of our general attention spans / ability to commit ourselves to something.

The WonderSwitch : like the WonderSwan designed by Gunpei Yokoi, you can rotate the device and some games handle this Tate mode.

The SwitchU : You can use a Switch 1 as a mablet for the Switch 2.

The Switch AdvanceCube : you can use multiple Switch 1 to play asynchronous instances of a game, like the GameCube used to do with the Gameboy Advance with the proper cable.

The Switch Entertainment System : Like some NES Games, requiring a new set of buttons to be played (Gyromite you needed to use the 2 controllers of the NES), if we could plug - or rail- additional modules / joycons on the console / joycons; or in the pro controller... It's a bit of a pain when i see PC games making the weirdest bindings to fit into a console controllers.

In general, I would really like the Switch 2 to be able to use the Switch 1 in some ways...
Also, I would like to see way more joycons, more shapes and display, that way you can really adapt handled to the way you want to play.

  • Quick Resume like the XBox -> game changer in my book, having the ability to switch between sessions if say somebody wants to play a multiplayer game or you want to do a quick run in an Rogue like in a break but dont want to close the other game.
  • scrollable shouldedr buttons, i want some controller inovation that doesnt hinder the "industry standard" layout to still work
  • improved build quality (joy cons, stick of Pro controller, etc)
  • improves eshop performance
  • HDR (on screen and docked)
  • a 120Hz screen so that stuff like indie games can render in 720 120Hz on it
  • camera, bring AR back
  • back triggers on the controllers
All things that would expand and push the experience without relying on just better performance.

a 720p120Hz HDR remake of geometry wars would be as satisfying as any AAA game they can port to it for me.

I'd love them to push on some things that might have been possible in the current Switch generation, maybe.

I remember when we saw Nintendo Switch for the first time, that the little part of the screen that goes over the dock made me think that this would be used for some Nintendo things. Like showing some kind of data there, or that it would be used as an infrared reader/receiver or whatever. I'd love them to make some use of the fact that with Nintendo Switch you are able to have two screens available sometimes. It doesn't need to be async play like Wii U, but simply getting some kind of creativity when having two screens available (or a screen, and part of it on the dock, like the current docks).

And somehow related to that. We know they like the “multiple Switches per house narrative”. If they want to keep that for their next device (we know they will), a way of pushing that would be multiplying the value of owning more Switch models in your house. In more dynamic ways.

There's a feature on the current generation that has been almost as much underused as the infrared camera. And it's local wireless. I remember a few years back in a long bus trip to Portugal with work colleagues, that we had a blast playing Street Fighter collection, Mario Kart, and Arms in that way. I know that this simply depends on developers making use of that feature on their games, but it would be great if the next ecosystem made it so much integrated that it was available just on any game with a multiplayer mode, like handheld / docked display modes are now. That would also imply that this kind of mode would lessen the restriction of owning the game in each Switch console.

And also, beyond that. I'd love them to create some kind of real life (not just over internet) connectivity between consoles. Like, for example, creating a big screen/board if you join 4 Switch tablets, where players could for example play a game like a digital version of a board game, or Mario Party, or Bomberman. We've seen some Mario Party mini-games have used something like this, but it was something basic, it would be great if they push that somehow, and adding more variety to that kind of connections, not just only as a bigger portable screen. This could also be related with my initial comment regarding the multiple screens' usage.

I GET wanting to immerse and be totally there.
I dissagree that that cant happen on a handheld, my GBA and DS experiences dissagree there. (Heck, my first experience of FF6 was the GBA version, or LTTP, and i remember once when i was playing Pokemon on a new safe without wanting to override the old safe, and seing how far i can get on one battery charge. I was immersed, totally).

I also remember playing pikmin 3 back then on the wii u pad, felt more natural and better, and after a long play session where i forgot time i realized that i stared to long onto that screen and needed to readjust to be able to focus again further away.

Now that i have argued why the notion that immersion cant happen on a small screen (or is worse, since you can easier put on headphones and search for a place where you have more peace, say in a household with children...), lets get to the reason why short less immersive play sessions are not that bad:
meditative/calming activities. I wont argue for bad game design (in jrpgs) where you have to have somethign else on to keep engaged because the game is not enough, im more talking stuff we had prior:
playing dice with friends while talking about stuff, knitting wile watching a movie, doodling while being in class. Its for a lot of people either one activity is not mentaly stimulating enough, or it helps with some other impulses, or helps people use the time they have better. Say i have to watch a conference or a lecture or a presentation / training from my field, but its long winded, not everything is important. Just playing something simple next to it to not drift to far away can help.
Having time to fill? if i have 20-30 minutes to do something, and have nothing important to do in that time, immersing myself in a big play session doesn't work.

TotK: i played major story parts docked, and did a lot of shrine hunting and depth exploration in handheld, after i got my fill of the atmosphere (one of the more disappointing aspects, shrines where again rather samey, and the depths where as big as the overworld but with a fraction of its diversity...)

I honestly don't want much as long as it's as powerful as we believe it will be lol.

But I will play the game anyway:

I'd like more ergonomic joycons. Call them Procons, Bigcons, Joycons Big, Joycons +, or Supercons or something. Idk lol. I would instantly buy anything that doesn't cause my hands to cramp after 25-30 mins of playing. With that said, I love what the Joycons have done for the Switch as far as branding goes (with it being in the logo and all), but I do not like what it does with my hands lol. I think the Pro Controller is great but I feel like it's fallen behind the current PS and Xbox controllers. It's time they up the build quality on that.

Secondly, I'd like an improved docked experience. I think the Switch excels far more as a portable than an actual home console (duh), but this is fine because there is a ton of room for improvement. For starters, the dock being less flimsy would be nice. Give me more functionality in the dock as well, type c port, 4k output for the OS, and a slot to charge Joycons would be cool. With how genius the hybrid concept is, I don't think we'll ever see a home console-only Switch model so the least they can do is improve the Switch's offerings there.

That's all I got. I want this thing now...

I GET wanting to immerse and be totally there.

Yeah I can't relate to that at all. I have been on lengthy flights where I put on my headphones and get lost in a Switch game for hours lol.

Some of my best memories were playing Mario Odyssey and BoTW during my travels.

Streetpass was a great feature on the DS, something I wish they brought to the Switch or something they can at least bring to a successor.

It would more likely cost 50-70 USD if at that size, but I find that the storage and RAM would be also be pretty high.

If smaller (which it would be) they can get away with probably 50 per SoC.
Why do you think it would be higher than $40? Are you assuming that the cost paid by Nvidia would be higher due to a more expensive 5N/4N wafer price or worse yield than I estimated? Or do you think Nvidia would be seeking a higher margin per chip. Thanks!

I haven't been here for several days. And suddenly I heard that a 4chan leak has come out.

What is your opinion of that leak?
Have there been any statements from Nate or from others who may have reliable information about all of this?

At what point are we? This is crazy, I love it, but we need to see something now for God's sake.

What is the latest reliable information we have?
Isn't it strange that none of the insiders who usually have reliable information are saying anything? Maybe that means it's closer than we think? And that's why they don't say anything at the moment, so they can't be pointed out by Nintendo.

What's going on, my god.

4chan leak is 100% fake imo.

The devkit in Spain leak may be legit.
