If 2D Mario exists my pipe dream is Mahito Yokota back as composer. His work in the Galaxies and 3D World is iconic and I missed him a lot in Odyssey.

Alright everyone, I've just updated the OP for what I expect to be the penultimate time. I'd like to close out my time as OP with some introspective remarks.

I've spent much of this year's hype cycles stewing in resentment of the regularity of the Nintendo news cycle and the precision with which some can now predict it. My mentality was one of chaos worship as I longed for the uncertain times for Nintendo news of years past. In addition to 2020, which I see as the height of these threads despite the lack of an actual Direct that year, Direct hype as we've come to understand it began in a very uncertain time for news about Nintendo Switch: the start of 2018. The first new year for Nintendo Switch brought with it great intrigue, as we didn't yet understand how the software composition of the platform would look in the years to come.

However, the past several days have brought me to the conclusion that my yearning for this feeling is misguided. What we all see embodied in @LukasManak22 is the maturation of Direct speculation: a robust commitment to facts, reason, and understanding of why Nintendo will do what and when. Yes, he knew exactly when the February Direct would be, as did many others, based on precedent alone. This week however will be a triumph for simple reasoning: there are no Nintendo games after Pikmin, and they need to have them announced by the financial briefing on Friday. It was cognizance of Nintendo that brought us here, not just a passive deference to patterns. I, for one, am very satisfied by how this story ends, though I wouldn't have said so mere weeks ago.

As I said before, Direct speculation has matured, both fundamentally and superficially. Our improved understanding of how Nintendo markets games represents a fundamental maturation of this endeavor, while the simple fact that we are now on-topic more than not represents immense superficial improvement. Indeed, the community finding a home has created a superior environment for both casual discussions and enthusiast ones like this. While the circumstances that led to its creation were obviously distinct from this, I have to thank @bellydrum for improving the activity of this community in an effort merely to save it.

As an aside, the third discussion topic that I previously alluded to felt unneeded and outright counterproductive as the thread gained momentum. While I consider the guided discussions great appetizers and their creation a success, this thread no longer has use for any guidance at all. Where we're going we don't need rails.

I hope that every last one of you gets something out of this week's Nintendo Direct. For the first time in a few years, I'm feeling excited myself.
I'm so happy to hear the excitement has returned for you, I know the speculation game hasn't been easy but I appreciate the work you've put in to keeping it going. While the uncertainty may be gone the chaos lives on in all of us, howl into The Abyss and The Abyss shall answer!

Welp, I'm gonna go to sleep. I've got work in the morning, but the Direct should be announced while I'm getting ready to leave.

I got your SNES remake right here xD

No joke that's probably the next SNES NSO update

I get to wake up early to drive to the Amtrack station, get on the train for 2 hours, arrive at the office where I'll mostly just talk to coworkers and pretend I'm paying attention in meetings, eat the company's food, gets nothing substantial done, and then it's another 2 hour train ride back.
God bless America

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Splatoon 3 were hoisted today on the eShop- not that there was any doubt but just further confirming we'll see wave 5 and Side Order/updates
(For any doubters, I successfully predicted Pikmin 4 back in September after 3DX was hoisted-some of you may remember!)

I am on the hype train now. I was doubtful of a June direct, thinking they’d ride Zelda for a while, let 3rd parties announce their own summer stuff during not-E3, drop MK8 DLC courses and Pikmin 4, a couple NSO games in August and back to business for a September Direct. But it sounds like… it’s happening?

I was probably too cynical. The tell is really that they loaded up the early part of the year with NSO, Metroid Prime, Fire Emblem, Advance Wars then Zelda. No sense in doing that and if you’ve got nothing for June, August, or September.

Edit: it’s small but they’ll probably date the announced N64 games. I think they’ll announce more Rare N64 titles too.

I for one still doubt we'll see Side Order, though this is a pretty good indication

Yeah, I feel like Side Order might be a September thing. I think Octo Expansion was a year-ish after 2.
Pyoro just retweeted Masuda's vague "Let's do our best!" tweet

Perhaps something pokemon related coming soon? Or even in the Direct?

I could definitely see a Pokémon thing going in the Direct if TPC doesn't have anything else to announce right now, thus not enough for a full Pokémon Presents.

PapaGenos said the SNES remake is Super Mario RPG based on his source.

For the record, his source told him about Metroid Prime Reastered showing up in the last Direct, and he was the only person who said it was going to be shadow dropped.

Same source?

It could be Pokemon GB games on NSO or eshop. Remember, RBY were announced to be coming to the 3DS eshop 7.5 years ago in a November Direct, so maybe it happens this week?

The only Pokemon game/news I can imagine appearing is Detective Pikachu 2 or some other spin-off.
I don't think they're going back to Nintendo Directs to show the main games, including DLCs or retro games.

I've lost confidence in seeing Metroid Prime 4 in this Direct even though I've gotten no information to make me believe that.
I know conviction can waver, but it's important that you don't lose faith in the process. Remember what happened back in February, Joe.

I can at least say with confidence that if we're not seeing it in this Direct, we are 100% seeing it in September.

So, somebody fill me in. I’m kinda off the grid this week, but also want to know what’s happening!
Direct this week from multiple rumor mill sources. Likely general due to speculation of multiple first party announcements. Potential 2D Mario and SNES game remake. Also gonna get wave 5 and Splatoon 3 DLC based on the various update trends in the eshop/file hosting sites. That’s about all I got. Could all be for nothing

So by tomorrow the whole show will either be known or we're being bamboozled lmao.

Either way I think I'm gonna avoid this place until the direct.

Tomorrow.

But also a new Super Mario Bros, a Super Mario RPG remake and maybe Pokemon news in a likely Direct this week, according to a newish potential insider Pyoro_ND on twitter

This is "E3 season", and the sixth anniversary of the game having been announced. I wanna see it now!

I'm with you, if Pokémon appears: Spin-off

My opinion on MP4 is if it's coming out this year, we'll see it in this upcoming Direct (and if not, whatever that July event is). If it's coming out next year, then they'll save it for the pre-TGS September Direct.

I know there's still disagreement over which type of direct is coming, but I just can't reconcile a 2D Mario (or any holiday game) with a mini or a partner. That, and my unchanging belief in the process, is why I think we are getting a general direct.

When was the last time we got Pokemon stuff in a Direct? The March 2020 Mini?
I bet you're right, yes.

The timing this time (heh) feels a bit off regarding Pokémon tho — if the first DLC drops in September (as Ranked Regulation D ends that month) wouldn't the typical August Presents a bit late for TPC to showcase it? Mmph.

I'm not expecting it on the Direct either but still.

August Presents would work well if that July event from Grubb is a Switch 2 one. Could show off the DLC and the next gen update from that 4chan leak for the February Pokémon Presents
