Probably the funniest thing I ever heard someone say about Metroid Prime 4's development reboot was "it was probably looking like an 8/10 game before and Nintendo wanted a 10/10"

Nintendo would not hire a different studio to start over from scratch if it was looking like a good game lmao

My guess is that it was most likely not even functional and no visions were coming together whatsoever.

I’d feel pretty confident giving Prime 4 a date next week.

We could go bowling, get ice cream, maybe blow up a planet or two. It’d be romantic.

Prime 4 showing up is dependent on them feeling confident in giving it a date, imo. They won't show Prime 4 without assigning it a date. Delaying the game and being forced to start over was embarrassing for them.

Do you also agree that it wouldn't make any sense to do just a teaser? I feel like they're only going to want to show it when they're ready to show exactly what it is, like with Dread. It's going to be a fairly meaty, confident trailer with an exact release date.

I'd agree. It needs to be a full, formal reveal. Not a teaser trailer type deal. We need a significant trailer with a date. Anything less than that would only serve to bring up the question: why not do that yrs ago?

I don’t want you to tell us anything about it, but just out of curiosity, do you know anything about Prime 4?

Or is it a super tightly kept secret?

I don't think further delaying a game that was in development for the better part of the lifetime of the Switch just so it can launch on a new hardware with a fraction of the installbase is the power move some people make it out to be

Yeah, they know people have been waiting for years, they're going to release it when it's done, to the huge Switch install base. And there's no reason we won't get a Switch 2 upgrade eventually.

By the way, side note:

I'm pretty sure around this time last year relatively speaking to the June Direct day, we were suddenly very aware via rumblings that it was going to be a Partner Showcase and not a general.

I don't think we're getting any such rumblings right now.

Could mean nothing but just saying.

Thought the main lead was named Metroid.

It's hard to say. In the development update video, they simply mentioned that it didn't reach the standards they seek in a sequel to the Prime Series, and that they wanted it to stand shoulder to shoulder with the other games. So technically, an 8/10 would not cut it. But, from everything we heard it sounds like it wasn't anywhere close to that.

To get an idea of how bad Namco’s Prime 4 had to be to get cancelled, remember that Nintendo didn’t cancel Everybody 1-2 Switch.

Metroid Prime 4 was actually finished in 2021 just like Fire Emblem Engage. We all thought Covid would slow down Nintendo but it turns out it made them faster than they ever been. They finished all of scheduled games for the next 10 days and are now just drip feeding them out over time. Pikmin 5, due to release in 2033, is looking real good.

Metroid Prime 4 this year or hold it back until 2024 and release a MP 2/3 HD 2 pack this year?

Prime 4 in 2023, Prime 2 remastered in 2024, Metroid 6 in 2025, Prime 3 Remastered in 2026, brand new Metroid spinoff in 2027, Prime 5 in 2028, Metroid 7 in 2029.

We eatin all decade.

I agree with the opinion we won't see Prime 4 again until Nintendo/Retro are confident it's ready to show off AND won't get delayed. Where I differ is I'm fairly confident we'll see it sooner then later. I think it's on the table we see it next week, and if not I'm expecting to see it in September for 2024.

I think those are very different situations for a small but important reason. You put a number on your title and people immediately start thinking differently about your game, the marketing teams know this.

True, but having the option to do it is just more money to them and makes sure the people who simply aren't going to skip entries are still potential costumers. Just to point to another example on the Switch, Monolith Soft did all they could to convince people that they could play Xenoblade Chronicles 3 without playing the others. Even so, they also did another thing before even announcing it: released the first game on the Switch.

Metroid Prime 4 this year or hold it back until 2024 and release a MP 2/3 HD 2 pack this year?
Never forget, Metroid Prime is a important franchise for the loud minority of hardcore gamer, but it is not a huge seller. Nintendo had several 10 million seller this generation. The Metroid Franchise had until now sold roughly 22M units, this is nearly the amount the first Switch Mario Party has sold alone, they have 7 titles with higher sales alone. Metroid Prime is with currently around 4M the franchises best seller by far.
So what i mean is that the potential for the series is very limited and Nintendo is relatively aware of it. That's why they were so totally surprised of the physical sales of MPR, which they definitely hasn't expected. At least it proofed to them that the franchise is worth it to push. But they would be stupid to oversaturate the market with releasing 2+3 Remakes before MP4. This they won't risk, MP1 was released because they are confident to release MP4 within a year, I am just not sure if it will be there big Winter release or their End of FY seller.

If MPR2+3 exist, they will be hold back for another time, beside the Remasters of Zelda WW and TP.
