Yeah, Tokyo games nowadays have a short reveal-to-release cycle. I expect it to be a hardware exclusive at this point so I don't see it being announced before new hardware. If it works for them, it's fine. But I suspect 2D DK will be no exception, reveal this September for a release by mid 2024.
I could see it being a situation similar to Odyssey where development began super early in the gen already knowing it would be for the next gen, starting with the hardware they had at the time or prototyping for awhile alongside Switch 2 prototyping.
But the thing that really strikes me is that... They weren't ever expecting anything to have 6 years development times, not even Tears of the Kingdom was ever expected to take so long, and that's a game greenlit for Switch always and about the same year or just the year before Mario was.
Would they really start development on a game in 2017/2018 always aiming for it to be late 2023 at the earliest?(I mean Switch 2 possible launch window before pandemic and Switch exploding in success)
It seems weird to me, tbh.
I think it started as a Switch project and shifted development fully to next gen mid dev(just like Luigi's Mansion 3, started development in 2014 for the Wii U, probably shifted to Switch in 2015/2016 and came in 2019).
But I'm kinda still hopeful it was more of a... Horizon Forbidden West or Breath of the Wild situation? I know it gets unlikely by the day, but the game being more of a Switch 2 game that has a Switch version(like Horizon, that has a whole new lighting system for PS5), and BotW as in being launch title for new hardware, being the tentpole release and being shown with the hardware always.
Unless they Tears of the Mushroom Kingdom, I wouldn't be surprised if EPD Tokyo made a next gen game that has Switch 2 all written on it and that's the looker of the console, and also somehow squeeze everything outta Switch and it runs on it too(at the cost of 30fps, no RTX, lower res). BotW for Wii U was kinda that but the Switch port was done quickly.
What I mean is more of a Horizon Forbidden West on PS5 vs PS4 for the 3D Mario, instead of a God of War Ragnarok on PS5 vs PS4.
(Sorry for the long post)
I wouldn’t be surprised if Pikmin 4 is the last big original retail title coming out of Nintendo first party until Switch 2. They have a treasure trove of titles perfect for remastering and filling in the time between July and whenever the next system releases, we don’t need banger after banger after banger anymore with the current Switch. Not to mention smaller stuff like a Rhythm Heaven or Picross 3D Round 3. We could still be looking at a very exciting year for Switch, just not in the way of big original first party titles.
Just out of curiosity, you think Metroid Prime 4 is cross gen, then?
You guys realize ND Cube is more than due for a new game this year, right? They churn something out every year-year and a half these days, so we're more than due for something later this year (I'm guessing Mario Party, especially considering the lack of him this year so far)
My takes:
- An Animal Crossing party spin off that doesn't suck, or a new AC spin off would be neat to see. Could end up being another 10m seller for the holiday season btw lol;
- a new Mario Party would be in the cards? A lot of people from SMP didn't come back for Superstars. Maybe we get SMP 2? Superstars 2? Mario Party and Friends, a more ambitious take?
- they go out and make an Animal Crossing remake/remakester. They had experience with the IP developing a game that has about the same structure as a mainline one AFAIK(Pocket Camp), EPD has all of the assets needed to build a game for NH, so why not? I think a new Mario Party might be saved for early in the Switch 2 gen, cross gen ofc but it comes very early, like early 2025 if the hardware releases in holiday 2024 or late 2024 if it's early 2024.
tomorrow either a very early June Direct (announcement) OR Mario Kart 8 Deluxe - Booster Course Pass wave 5.
mark my words
The "soon" Tweet of the Canadian Nintendo made me wonder if we wouldn't get the Direct by next week.
So far for the fiscal year Nintendo have covered the following out of their usual boxes:
- miracle re-release (Advance Wars)
- Big Game (Zelda)
- EPD 4 shenanigans (Legend of the Stinky Horse)
- miracle sequel (Pikmin 4)
Things missing:
- Mario shit that ain't dlc
- Pokemon shit that ain't dlc
- Square Enix shit that's timed exclusive
Square Enix for this year: probably DQ III remake;
Square Enix for next year/early cross gen period: Super Mario RPG remake;
Square Enix for mid gen Switch 2: Chrono Trigger remake.
- Super Mario Bros. (2023), not to be confused with Super Mario Bros. (1985) or Super Mario Bros. (1993)
- Detective Pikachu 2 (2023), not to be confused with Detective Pikachu 2 (20XX)
- Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars (2023), not to be confused with Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars (1996)
I wouldn't be surprised if they marketed the next 2D Super Mario game as just Super Mario Bros. or Super Mario or something like that. Super Mario Bros. would be both the same title as the movie and the same title as the most recognizable game of all time basically. They could market it as a reboot of sorts too.
Saw this on my timeline. It appears to be a Capcom Europe leak.
It seems soon? SF6 is out, Megaman is out, final sunbreak event is on the 7th, only Exoprimal and Ghostrick have not released.
More Ghostrick and Exo? AA7? New RE game? More DD gameplay? Who knows if this is even real lol.
EDIT: Links seems to be dead. Ignore this lol
EDIT2: Its fake, it was a fan page that used the same font. False alarm
EDIT3: It might be real after all lol
The way it's gone up and down was funny lmao
I’m not looking forward to seeing them reveal the same Monster Hunter info at the showcase Weds, then Summer Game Fest, then Xbox Showcase and now the Capcom Showcase lol (even though I am a MH fan)
My crazy thought is that they announce/tease the next MH game(Rise 2 or World 2 or new subtitle). If it's Rise 2, will be announced for Switch and end up releasing right in the holiday season of 2024, right after the release of Switch 2. If it's Works 2 or new subtitle, it'll be announced for XBS and PS5, and later a version for Switch 2 would be announced at some Direct or presentation.
I wouldn't discard the possibility of another expansion for Rise tho tbh.
Edit: my fanfic dream is that they tease a Resident Evil game for Switch that end up releasing by the time the Succ is out and is cross gen.
