StarTopic The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom |ST| Linkin' Parts (Please Tag All Spoilers)

I was trying to get a chest hanging by a rope in the sky but messed up and it fell down...so I jumped right after it and dived sprinting all the way down until I almost hit the ground, it was amazing! I landed right at the center of Kakariko, where I had been trying to get to for the last hours before being sidetracked by a hundred other things and now I'm torn between exploring the village or returning to the sky to see if the chest respawns (I couldn't find when I landed).

Another time I was gently gliding down from a skytower, minding my own business when I started hearing a "swoooosh" sound, looked around and a falling piece of a sky ruin hit me, killing me when I hit the ground. I laughed so hard!

Question about
Autobuild:
Do you need to take out the parts you need to build a contraption? If you don't, will Autobuild take them directly from your inventory or will it use Zonaite instead?
You need to take them out of the devices otherwise it will use Zoanite instead

Gonna get some Zelda time in this morning before doing job interview prep this afternoon. Not quite sure what to do in Hyrule, though! I don't think I can see any more shrines in Central Hyrule, and even did the one in the floating castle .

Can't decide whether to head south and explore the Great Plateau; East for Necluda to check what's what in Hateno and Kakariko; or North West to the Rito and then Hebra to do a little of the main quest. Ooph.
The Rito: The blizzard has us strapped for resources

Me in their village: breaking every pot and taking everything that isnā€™t nailed down
Had a fun moment when I emerged from ransacking the castle and, coming out the main entrance, bump into an NPC who's there to stop thieves from entering. I think he actually has a little bit of unique dialogue if you speak to him coming out of the castle rather than as you head in to the castle. basically says Link used to live in the castle so may as well do as he pleases

Shit, I beat the Zora dungeon and forgot to pick up the Heart Container before triggering the end cutscene. Can I go back to it or do I have to reload a save

EDIT: Yep I could go back and get it. Honestly kind of weird you have to press A to pick up a Heart Container unlike the old games.

Now let's see if I fare any better against the miniboss in the Deku Tree this time...

Yeah, good question. Are dungeons inaccessible after completion like Divine Beasts were? I'd like to be able to complete them, leave, and then come back if it turns out there's nice treasure I missed - I think it hurts a game as open as BOTW to suddenly say "you can't come back here so comb it thoroughly now."

Anyone else in the "barely touched the story yet" gang with me? I got this game a day early and I still haven't touched a dungeon. Managed to obtain a bunch of cool armour sets, full 3 bars of stamina, all towers and there's still so much of this game I've barely scratched the surface of.

Me! Reached my first dungeon tonight before calling it a night. The route to it was anxiety-inducing for me and my fear of heights.

Iā€™ve been spending a lot of my time exploring wells and caves as Iā€™m taken with some quests relating to them and am just plain interested in looting and nice/horrible surprises. Found a nice well last night in a cold area - the one behind Snowfield Stable has fairies in it, provided you can unthaw it.

Instead of actively choosing to go anywhere specific for a quest, I picked out the nearest interesting looking spot, the Ancient Tree Stump, and if anybody hasn't poked around there yet, there's something very handy inside.

I came back without any issue. They seem fully accessible after the fact.

Also I can confirm the miniboss in the Deku Tree is still kicking my ass :(

That is really cool!

Nope, you can reenter them at your leisure.

The route to it was anxiety-inducing for me
Iā€™m doing that right now! And Iā€™m getting a miniature heart attack every time I make a jump. And you just keep going up and upā€¦

OMG I FINALLY BEAT IT. It took almost my cooked food but I fucking did it. I'm just mad cuz I had 3 rockets and I was gonna use one more to fly up and rain hell on Phantom Ganon but he hit me with an arrow in midair...

Glad that's over. And it looks like he drops some sick ass gear

High note to end tonight on before bed

Three things:

1. In awe of the amount of different zonai devices. At first I thought they would be like ten different ones like fans, wings, wheels, cannons etc. But there are so many! They really gave everything in this game.

2. This game feels like an actual, literal adventure. For the last 3 days I'm trying to reach Hateno village. Yet I keep getting distracted all the time by something else. Shrines, sky islands, depths, quests, koroks, building or messing around. When I'll finally reach Hateno I would have an adventure tale to tell. Like if an npc asks me how I got there I would tell him my story sitting by the fire. BOTW was like that as well, but TOTK is that multiplied by a lot.

3. I know the gaming community is immature enough to think that graphics and production values are what make a game advanced, but while playing this game I really feel like it came 10 years from the future. I remember playing Assassin's Creed Odyssey some time after BOTW and while I enjoyed it it really felt like 2 generations behind gameplay wise. I can't emphasize it enough when I say that TOTK is an actual next gen game "stuck with last gen graphics" (which I love btw). Meanwhile most open world games are last gen games with next gen graphics.

Just finished the tears quest.

Everyone: Zelda's totally gonna be playable!

TOTK: What if she turned into a dragon instead

Cool stuff. Two dungeons down, gonna do some sidequests before moving on.

Okay now bed for real

The couple hiding in a shack from monsters are real as hell. Everyone else in Hyrule napping in tents a stone's throw from enemy encampments or wizzrobes? Looking for mushrooms in little hell caves? It couldn't be me. If I were a Hylian I would simply marry a giant warrior NPC and kit my home out with Home Alone-style Zonai traps.

Yes! I think I've said before, but Hyrule has always felt like gaming 'home' to me and I've always spent a lot of time with these games, even before BOTW - I took years to finish ALTTP and OOT too and loved wandering aimlessly and exploring. TOTK takes serendipitous adventuring to another level though.

I canā€™t believe I found

climbing gear
In some random cave. This game is wild.

Yeah, I got this early on and was so happy. It seems these have replaced the EX Treasure stuff from the expansion pass last time, as there are NPCs who will tell you rumours about various items of clothing. Last night I found Frostbite Armour that I think adds ice to your attacks in low temperatures. Really cool.

Nearly 50 hours in, and I've only done one dungeon. I haven't even visited Hateno and Tarrey Town. Jesus help me. I am loving this thing.

I ran into an NPC who marked that and two other clothing pieces as treasure items on my map, I only spoke to them while taking shelter from lightning in a storm under a tree with them as I saw them running for cover.

I now have a
light beam cannon thing, a regular cannon, a control stick and some all terrain tyres.

The dream of building a ludicrous tank to park in front of big enemies is coming together. Started jotting down which gacha machine each part came from as thereā€™s way more than I thought there would be

The world design is so good. It's open but there's definitely a guiding hand if you want it. You start in Central Hyrule and the game nudges you to start your quest towards the Rito, and the most obvious way to head towards their area is bridge that leads directly to a cave, stable, geoglyph and a shrine, with a tower looming over the horizon. Great stuff.

Caves do have interesting pieces of armour. I won't spoil which one I found this morning, but I wasn't expecting it.

I also got told three armour piece locations by a travelling NPC, who marked my map, and it looks like those three marks are all caves. I did the first this morning and saved when I reached the second mark, and it was another cave.

The cave I mentioned first in my post wasn't marked by an NPC; it was just a notable spot on the map I checked out as I was passing.

Youā€™ll also likely have a first meeting with the NPC that expands your inventory on the way, along with finding an NPC that unlocks the great fairy quest chain

Alternatively you can do what I did and strike out east because I didnt want to follow the obvious hint, and ended up fleeing from trees and gloom and hands and all manner of terrifying stuff :D But itā€™s great that, if you do want a bit of guidance, the game opens up gradually if you follow the gentle directions.

I have no idea how long Iā€™ve been playing, but I started last Friday and I still have only completed one major dungeon. Thereā€™s so much to do, every time I think ā€˜Iā€™ll start heading towards x objectiveā€™ I get sidetracked. The writing is good too- I like investigating the wells, the newspaper assignments, all the sidequests you pick up at the stables. On top of that, when Iā€™m in the sky I start building crazy flying machines as you can see all the landmasses up there and they all look interesting. Then I inevitably fall off and start thinking ā€˜well I may as well look for geoglyphs while Iā€™m fallingā€™. Often I get bored in big open world games but the art direction is so vibrant and colourful that itā€™s all so attractive. Reminds me a lot of Dragon Quest, all the colour and gentle humour.

I think the main thing I love so far, even more than ultrahand, is the character of the Hylians though. Itā€™s a civilisation of lovely, friendly, brave and practical people who appreciate what youā€™re trying to do, who are trying to do the right thing without Zelda to guide them. They still have Impa and various other leaders, thereā€™s all their allies in the other settlements, thereā€™s groups of researchers and soldiers out there doing stuff. They arenā€™t cowering in a bunker waiting for the end times. Itā€™s a staging post to rebuild the home they love, and the vibe is awesome.

I think in addition to everything else thatā€™s been noted, another thing theyā€™ve really improved this time around is the sense of mystery. In BotW you only really had this on when you wake up on the Great Pleataeu, then when King Rhoam explains everything itā€™s never quite as prevalent. Whereas here between the depths, Ganondorf, the Zonai history and archeology and whatever is happening with Zelda itā€™s been a constant for my entire playthrough so far.

Yeah, itā€™s interesting, thereā€™s tons of buried info but you also have leads to go on. What also helps is that all the Hylians are curious too- which makes it infectious. You arenā€™t the only person looking into stuff, but you are the one with both enough leads to follow and the strength to deal with the monsters in the way. I love that the chats with various researchers you find are (largely!) collaborative rather than treating you like a dogsbody.

Yes! Forgot to mention the inventory NPC on the way too, who happens to mention which direction he's heading next, I guess that's another nudge towards what you could do after the Rito??

And yeah the writing is great, it's fun talking to all the NPCs, they're all really charming.

Somehow completely missed the great fairy quest you mentioned, d'oh!

I have finally gotten to a point where I can do armor upgrades.

Also, does anyone have any tips for getting Bokoblin Guts? I've probably killed 100s of them and somehow only have 3 guts. Are they really just that rare?

If so, that's going to make upgrading some armor quite difficult.

Is it a more common drop from higher-level Bokoblins? Like the blue/black ones? I donā€™t know. I need to do more mining for amber for mine, anyone know if thereā€™s an easy way to farm it or is it just the hard way of breaking a ton of rocks?

I didn't really feel that nudge at all, and I wish it had been stronger, or at least that it was less important to head out that way - I think the opening part of the game would have been much stronger if I had followed that path. Maybe it's my fault for wandering off too soon, but I really felt like I was done with Lookout Landing by the time I left. The only nudge I remember was a character saying the Rito village is probably closest.

So 30 hours in I had no way to upgrade either armor or weapons, hadn't met Impa for the geogylph quest line and it was a real pain in the ass. I actively felt like I had missed something. Especially finding the musicians at the Eldin stable and not being able to start the quest to get the fairy because I hadn't yet visited the newspaper - that was just BS punishment for not starting with Rito village.

I felt the nudge was pretty strong, it made me decide to deliberately avoid going to Rito village haha.

that was just BS punishment for not starting with Rito village
I think you can gather the musicians before you even go to the news stable? Iā€™m not sure since I also didnā€™t go to Rito Village first. But I did help out a couple of musicians whoā€™re now probably just waiting for me back at whatever stable that was.

It seems like a pretty common drop from Ore Deposits, so basically that. I think the Pebblits also drop one every time, although I can't really think of any area that has more than 3 of them, so that probably doesn't help.

I remember feeling the same when I played GoW2018, not being able to climb everything, being stopped by waist-high obstacles or just being unable to go whenever I wanted was incredibly frustrating, I constantly had this feeling of having to do exactly what the game wanted me to do at every turn or the whole illusion would break down. Whereas in BotW it was "I'm gonna Tao Pai Pai this tree to cross the river" AND IT WORKED!!

And now you look at TotK and it makes it look like you really could not do anything in BotW, it's crazy.

I don't see enough people talking online about how good the Side Adventures are. I've barely done the main story because I just keep doing them lmao. Some of them are UNHINGED.

I didnā€™t feel these constraints with God of War, but totally felt them with Horizon and its sequel. Both feel actively inhibiting of my movement and freedom in both combat and traversal. (But can be enjoyable experiences regardless.)

God of War compelled me forward by sheer polish, the set pieces, the atmosphere, everything was so well done. It and Ragnarƶk are a couple of my favorite games of all time, and are in a completely separate, but almost equally as exciting, pool of video games for me.

I just finished one this morning that was quite awesome.

It's the one that's found in The Great Plateau.

50 shrines completed. It's surprising how many puzzles you can solve by simply building a large bridge out of whatever is laying around.

So far I like the sky islands a lot more than the underground. I don't plan to spend much time down there unless it's required.

Last night, I had an outright narratively powerful moment that was entirely accidental because of how Iā€™ve been playing the game.

For the whole time Iā€™ve been playing, I had yet to come back and visit Hateno Village. I just hadnā€™t had a reason to go there yet.

So, after I completed the memories and recovered the Master Sword, I was at a loss on how to proceed, and decided to explore places I hadnā€™t been, and I was already near Hateno because of where the memory questline ends, so it was my first stop.

The first place I decided to visit, the very first thing mind you after having finished the memories and having had THAT encounter to get the Master Swordā€¦ was Linkā€™s old house, which was now Zeldaā€™s house. The sheer implication that Zelda had been living with Link since the Calamity and then reading her diary with her talking about the peace in Hyrule, and her fondness of Linkā€¦ it hit me like a truck.

Man, I wanted to do the story and see what all the hype with the bosses and dungeons are like, but I keep getting distracted! Last night I legit was in Rito Village, did the shrine, and left to explore because I wanted to do some side quests and find some stuff.

Does anyone have tips on how to properly launch a Korok with a rocket so they go where I want them to? I never managed it to work but I keep doing it because it's so much fun.

That's probably what I love most about the game (and the prequel).

Getting distracted from you were originally planning to do, and go on some spontaneous adventure.

I'm maybe being dumb, but how do you use the maps? Found 2 of them, but can't get the crosses to re appear beyond the initial appearance.

Absolutely nothing wrong with that. The story will be there, but your fleeting notice of a potential shrine, Korok, or something else might not be if you hold off on following it.

This game is on a different level compared to BotW, both in that regard and in general. There's so much more to find in this game, so my brain goes "Ooo, lattjeful, if you go over there, you can find a cave, or an enemy camp, or a Korok, or a shrine, or a miniboss!"

My brain just runs wild with the possibilities. And thanks to Ultrahand and Fuse, even if you don't find anything, just make a boat or a fuse a new weapon so you get something useful or so you can go even farther. Imo not enough people have talked about those two abilities being used as avenues for exploration. Because of Ultrahand and Fuse, you can really get use out of everything. That's my favorite part, I think. Even when you don't find caves or camps or anything, the game is - in a way - rewarding you by being creative or living off of the land.

all of those maps (at least so far for me) are for locations in the depths, so if you push down on the d-pad from the map screen, the markers should still be there

If you just want to throw them as far as possible, angle your rocket at 45 degrees, point in the desired direction, and attach them to the top of the Korok. Then launch away!

Man, I wanted to do the story and see what all the hype with the bosses and dungeons are like, but I keep getting distracted!
To even get to Rito Village I had my horse auto-path the road and forcefully turned a blind eye to everything. And I still got distracted a few times!

After I do the Rito quest itā€™s back to side adventures for me

Because of Ultrahand and Fuse, you can really get use out of everything
Theyā€™re both so good. They can each sustain a game on their own and here in TotK theyā€™re just two of the things you can do.

that ganondorf face is going to become a meme right? You know the one

Does anyone else feel like koroks are now rarer? Iā€™ve only met a dozen or so ā€œI need to find my friendā€ ones, but otherwise, they seem few and far between in comparison to BotW. Iā€™d be surprised if they were 900 again.

I am feeling the same.

I am assuming I just suck at finding them or missed some new puzzles, but they may have toned down on the 900 thing. Who knows.
