StarTopic The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom |ST| Linkin' Parts (Please Tag All Spoilers)

Dying while liberating a village (Lurelin in this case) not only respawns every enemy, it also doesn't give you any of your consumables or equipment back when you respawn so I just lost basically all the stuff I had on me for getting hit by an arrow once. I'm actually fuming lol.

That first tower cannot be the real first tower man. I keep dying and dying and dying.
So, turns out there is like
a whole story segment after you first land in Hyrule. Like, was there I guide for that, that guided you to Purah or something?

Because I guess I missed it and went all over the map, died a lot, collected loads of stuff while missing most essentials skills lmao! I gues I completely suck in this. Mind you, I've played every Zelda game there is since they came out and never had this haha!

At least now I'm on track again and kind of know what to do.

This game really was like “hey remember all those cool ideas we had in Skyward Sword but didn’t always work very well due to hardware/control issues? Now they do.”

I'm just happy they can fully realize those concepts now, even on the "aging" Switch.

Is there a Bubulfrog in every single cave? I can't find one in the Mining Cave at Great Sky Island, and the lack of a check on the icon is driving me crazy.

From what I understand, yes, but MAN some of these bastards are well hidden

how the heck do you dodge? i feel like i’ve tried every button. is it something that you have to unlock? i can’t remember if you had to unlock it in the first game
I got taught in a shrine
but not sure if that unlocks it or just teaches you how to do it.
But just focus and sidestep or back jump with R-stick + X

hey uh is there a way to get compedium filled in like in botw, because I don't wanna have to take pictures of EVERYTHING, monsters fine but every single weapon and material is insane

Well i've reached

The dephts

I like the area but

I can't orientate a shit, isn't there a way to traverse the dephts without only watching vanta black every two steps? I know i can use the light bulbs but it's boring as shit throwing a bulb, smashing it to iluminate a small area and then repeat without knowing where to go

These powers are so much more thematically satisfying than BOTW’s. They had the right idea with magnesis and stasis (as evident by evolving them into ultra hand and rewind), but that level of care went out the window with “bombs but magic” and “tower of ice” which were extremely one-dimensional powers ala items of Zelda’s past.

I do think cryonis has a chance of being “rethought” in a future title that plays with fluids and water, but it was smart to retire it for now. Ascend is sort of a successor to it if you are to instead look at it through the lens of vertical movement, but again, has bounds more valid applications.

Remote Bombs… of course are replaced by bomb plants somewhat. The only missing aspect is the “Remote” piece which I could see them bringing back with an expansion of Zonai tech in another game (assuming it doesn’t exist in this one lol, I’m very early) that enables for toggling power without a smack.

This game and Botw back to back contrast how important a good boss fight is for people's overall thoughts on a dungeon.
Honestly the wind temple wouldn't have felt out of place among the BotW dungeons everyone says are "not dungeons", but the boss at the end was so awesome it justified everything that came before it.

So I loved the opening sequence and the atmosphere of the starting area...

The archaelogical elements also a big plus.

I've really enjoyed a lot of ultrahand related puzzles. I LOVE the soundtrack. I LOVE the green colour palete, the atmosphere of the shrines etc!

Two worries I have are...

The game seems too structurally similar to BotW

1. You search for shrines all over Hyrule to get more hearts & stamina. I dont think this aspect is more exciting than BotWs if anything so far I find the shrines thrown out there

2. I now have 4 points on the map again, pretty nuch the same 4 points. So I know theres 4 dungeons and thats it?

This specific instance did bother me, yeah.

Though thankfully they appear to be the exception rather than the norm? Most characters who I'd expect to recognise Link seem to do so, from what I've played so far.
So far nobody at any of the stables or Beetle have recognized Link.

I just finished what I think is the first section.

I really don’t remember enjoying a game or being this impressed by the way a game is put together, as I am with this. It’s just fantastic.

There's more than four dungeons, but they're not hinted at until a certain point.

Now, I may - most likely - be wrong...

...but the Switch OLED has to have been at least a small factor in the development of the Depths, right? The place is literally a giant OLED showcase. With its absolute black levels and darkness surrounding small pockets of light. It looks incredible with the tech.

So last night, I played through the beginning of Tears of the Kingdom, finishing the Great Sky Island.

This game is very special.

I have a few highlights:
  • Zelda is a big nerd and I love her for it.
  • The name drop of the Imprisoning War was as hype for Zelda as it was for me.
  • Matthew Mercer's performance as Ganondorf was completely justified by that first scene with him in it. I like that he was able to flex his range.
  • In general, the storytelling for the opening moments is really good. Works as a sequel to BotW, works as a legacy sequel to a long running franchise, and still is solid as a standalone game.
  • I really vibe with the level design of the Great Sky Island. It's still open ended, but it's also guided, directing you forward with the new powers you get and slowly introducing the new and returning mechanics. If you want to go off and explore, you can. If you want to have a focused experience, you can. Fantastic stuff.
  • Ultrahand is the highlight for sure. Magnesis supercharged with the crafting mechanic. Ascend and Recall are simple conceptually but also really satisfying. Fuse is perhaps the most clunky of the skills, but it also opens up so many options. The four abilities here do a great job of making this feel still connected to BotW but also very much its own thing.
  • Seeing returning Zelda staples, like Bomb Flowers and Like Likes, always put a smile on my face. Same with our Zonai friend being this game's incarnation of Rauru.
  • I like how Link getting stronger in this game is portrayed as him purifying the Gloom that has infected him. The Ashitaka comparisons are even stronger here than they were in BotW.
  • Hearing Fi's theme in the scene when Link send the Master Sword to Zelda with Recall got me good.
  • I may have only seen the surface of Hyrule for a few moments, but I love the music. It still has the calm vibe of BotW, but there's more energy, more life. This is a recovering world, and I'm excited to see thr people of Hyrule band together to preserve their restored world together.
So yeah, game good.

just fought a tree

ama
Lmao, me too. I panicked so I was like

"Yo this fucking tree is chasing me what do I do? Ok I shoot it with an arrow and fire fruit, it's the only thing I have left

And I was like "wtf it worked???" :ROFLMAO:

Just done with a story segment.

Rito questline.

And DAAAAAAAAAAMN!

That was something else.
Completely unreal.

If it's so that this section pales in comparison to what's to come: pack it up, y'all. We're done. We have reached the end of this art form with this game.

The sheer size of the game is absolutely insane. Just tons and tons of content as far as the eye can see (and just as much where you can't see as well) and yet you can't walk two steps without spotting something interesting. This is open world taken to an extreme, when I think of any other open games they just feel dwarfed and incredibly barren in comparison. This doesn't just balance size and content distribution, it dials both to the absolute maximum the current tech allows.

Also the world feels so alive. Everywhere you go there is some NPC minding their own business, and not just that but the dialogue and animation are situational. When its raining, most NPCs will include something about it in their dialogue, I once saw a traveling Goron who had his hands up his head like he didn't want to get wet and complained about the rain when I talked to him.

This level of care and attention to detail on a world on such an insane scale could only be achieved by Nintendo incrementing over a established framework. Their sequels are really special and justified, you just can't make a game like this from scratch.

Me: I should go to Kakariko to do <thing>

Also me: Heads in that direction and does 17 other things, forgets to do that one thing, and then remembers it again 2 hours later, repeats the process

Does anyone know how you’re supposed to fight gleeocks? Whenever I see one they fly way too far away for me to hit them with anything but arrows and they one shot me with lasers. I have 8 hears but I have to run every time I see one because so literally can’t damage it.

I'm 20h in and I've acomplished NOTHING. And I love it.

This is kind of the ultimate video game for me. I don't want anyhting else. I don't want to leave this game.
The music is astounding. The sound design is astounding. The colors are breathtaking.

THE SHRINE MUSIC IS...

IS SO GOOD.

okay quick question. The sidequest you do with Impa, do you have to go to the locations in a specific order or can you do them in any order?

Because I'm at the location in the Great Plateau but I cannot for the life of me find the tear on this geoglyph.

Actually it might not be in the Great Plateau per se but it's right next to it. There's a huge lake and a bridge guarded by a monster next to it.

I got one to the southwest of Hyrule Ridge, which presumably wasn't the one at the Forbidden Temple she specified previously.

So yeah, I'd assume any order is fine. Impa and Cado were hanging around, though their dialogue seemed a bit more generic - presumably to cover for going your own way.

Managed to find it. So definitely can do it out of order.

Is it just me that is genuinely unnerved when exploring The Depths? Even though I know the enemies there don't represent a massive threat the sheer black nothingness of your surroundings - the fact that you can literally see nothing in front of you bar the occasional mysterious thing in the distance - just makes me feel legitimate anxiety. I want to spend as little time down there as possible, even if it's a really cool idea and place to explore.

I’m actually curious if you have to talk to impa to start that quest. I did but I originally wanted to start it right away

Okay the Kitawak Shrine in the Gerudo Valley has my favorite solution. I was like "is the solution really to fling yourself in the air with a constructed catapult, that's too good to be true." Then it was and I was so hyped. 10/10

Hold up, not only there are caves and depth but also
wells? I just found 2 and you can explore them??

The amount of exploration this game is offering is insane.

Also, I'm the kind of person who ignores side quests and just go straight to the main story. Not this time, I'm distracted with so many things like damn!

The only flaw with this game so far is

the crazy Minecraft shit you create don't get saved up in the game's memory for long? Like, I turn around and walk a little and then turn back and it's already gone!! Which is crazy because that was not a problem in BOTW, I'd genuinely be impressed about how the game would remember my horses even when I gone from hell and back and I'd find random items from battles that fell off edges years ago. But maybe I just had bad luck

are wells different?? I walked past one on southeast side of the forgotten temple on my way to Rito Village and I skipped it.

Yeah, totally distinct thing. Many are for quests.

What’s the point of the depths? I was super excited to go down there thinking it was gonna me some gigantic dungeon but it just seems to be a giant empty space?

There's a lot down there, but it may take a while to appreciate how it fits with the flow of the overworld and sky. There's a bunch that breaks the Zelda paradigm of content that people expect, but the different structure is part of what makes the game feel like a giant buffet.

Died about 3 times in the Morok Shrine, but its my fault because I was like "does the launching angle of the springs change?" and yes, they do lol

Yes, they are different and there is a quest tied to find all of them

"Oh, look! Another shrine way out in the distance!"

Yesterday I intentionally played the very beginning of the game as my mom was in the room so we could both react to the intro. As I said in posts past, my mom is not necessarily into games much—she's only been quite interested in Zelda—but even then, very limited. At first, I only expected us to be thrown into the game again like in BOTW, but man was I ecstatic when it was the lead-up to the Upheaval. I was just as thrilled as Zelda was during the mural portion. Then, we get to the end of their cavernous adventures and that's when I couldn't hold it in. I absolutely lost it when Ganondorf revived, screaming "OH SHIT" when they got attacked, and my mouth was completely open the second I heard Ganondorf's dry mummy voice and the intimidating/taunting he did towards the two—I was awestruck. I inadvertently made my mom shocked and excited because, for one, I never usually swear in front of my parents, but two, the hype always transfers to others—especially with my wide-ass smile and uncontrollable bursts of "OOHHHH!!!". But in all, the plot setup was very creepy and super well-executed. Even after the whole Ganondorf thing, I was eyes wide-open to see the glorious sky islands for the first time in my hands, and the title sequence as Link was falling down the sky was chefs kiss. Currently, in my playthrough, I've only completed a part of the main questline of getting the camera, and now I'm going to each of the 4 regions. I'm super excited to see what awaits me in the story and my adventures across Hyrule, the skies above, and the caves below. To me, this is already better than BOTW, and now I am deeply in love yet again.

I really, really like the depths. The geography and Ultrahand dynamics are wildly different than the rest of the world that makes it really interesting to navigate, and the focus on large side quests instead of micro side content is wildly diverse than the rest of the game.

My Stamina, Hearts, and Dungeon progress are shit but I'm over half done with Batteries.

There’s exclusive materials & enemies, mines to find Zonite, and it’s to my knowledge the only place in Hyrule you can find weapons that weren’t damaged by Gloom.

Also that’s where you get the Autobuild ability. I had to look up how to get it, it comes with a unique boss fight as well.

Where can I upgrade my Energy Cell
place right North/NE of Lookout.

Thankfully...

you get a quest for that after your first dungeon.

Ok I give up. How do you beat

Gleeok, those Dragons? Their beams are so fast I cannot outrun them, and trying to aim a bow with my horse is frustrating at least and infuriating at best. Plus their regenerative health makes them almost imposibble for me to kill three of them in them to attack them in melee. Is there something I'm missing here?
