Previews The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom | Preview Thread

Just watched Zeltik's preview and he discusses <boss encounter> how the box golem boss changes shapes throughout the fight, and at one point he had to use Ascend THROUGH the boss when it started floating in the air. Oh my god.

Yeah just thinking about this in application is... so satisfying. It's reminding me of something so random, I don't know if anyone here remembers Prince of Persia The Two Thrones, but there was this gameplay gimmick whereby you could wall-run into a flying dagger slash, the game lets you do it maybe 4 times in total and it's one of the most satisfying things ever. I'm imaging the Ascend function being so satisfying and similar in this regard.

These previews might be the biggest mistake made by a major gaming company in the past decade. I literally screamed "I NEED TO PLAY YOU!" at my screen. I knew they said it was going to be something special, but the lack of gameplay, compared to BotW, made me think they were just going to release BotW DLC. Absolutely unacceptable to make us wait another 2 weeks. Once they knew hype was going to explode, they should've delayed the previews closer to release.

Do not try to put a fire emitter dragon head at the front of your wood vehicle.

The fire will burn it down when your vehicle run into the fire that got blown back due to momentum and shit.

Case in point: Skill Up’s video.

honestly that's a fine title screen by me. much much much better than BOTW.
1. I actually really like the title screen also.
2. It's a title screen? People get upset over a title screen? It could be a black screen with 'Press Start' and I wouldn't think twice. It wouldn't detract from anything for me. Are title screens actually important to people?

I thought I would cancel my physical preorder just to buy a digital copy from japanese eShop to play it roughly day before due to timezones but I resisted.

But heads up, if you are planning to buy digital copy and want to save few bucks the version on JP eShop costs roughly $60 when converted + you will play it sooner.

lmao very true. I think people compare it to past Zelda's title screens and find it underwhelming but I'm also with you. that giant ass world has to load at once so skimping on the title screen is fine.

I bought the physical TOTK ZOLED and Physical game from Curry's in the UK - and they have called me a grand total of 7 times since. With 2 voicemails. Asking me if I want to purchase insurance.
What a total waste of resources / annoyance from an otherwise reputable company.

I definitely see what they are going for but I am really unsure this is the kind of I game I personally fancy playing in this moment of my life.

It just seems overwhelming in every aspect of it. I am not sure if I want to think in a Zelda game, other than for solving puzzles. So I guess we could say what I wanted for this sequel was more of BoTW but bigger: maybe a different map (that would be asking too much I know), actual dungeons and some new run of the mill powers would have sufficed.

Anyway, congratulations to the programmers for this that is coming. I hope you guys enjoy playing the game.

Hey, so remember like 3 weeks ago people were complaining that TotK was close to release and Nintendo was barely promoting the game?

with every new revelation/realization I go

Idk if it's been mentioned yet because I'm still catching up on the thread but in commonwealth realms video he said " I'll be searching for batteries in all THREE layers"

Glad I’m able to enjoy games without micro analysing for slight frame rate drops. I reckon playing and loving 3D games during the N64 era means I’m immune to these things now. Looks awesome compared to Body Harvest, bro! :)
I wonder if growing with ps1 and n64 made more capable of handling bad fps.

However, I really appreciate games with solid 30fps. 60 is chef kiss.

Guess it’s just us; no one else seems to care, including the people who got to play the game for the previews, otherwise there’d be an answer by now… 😔
I still believe it's there, Aonuma's previous wording made is seem like they will use it in future Zelda. It was not there in BOTW because the version needed to be on par with the Wii U.

Just thinking about using Zonai rockets on shields... I'm picturing a speedrunner finding a way to daisy-chain them together.

Yeah, I know why it wasn’t implemented in BotW but I’m still anxious that it might’ve still not made the cut in TotK for whatever reason. You’d think someone would have confirmed it by now… If I was playing a preview, checking for HD Rumble would be one of the first things I’d do since it’s one notable feature that BotW didn’t support. Can’t believe no one seems to have answered that question with these previews.

HD Rumble seems like such a low priority for me? Since it's near enough defunct and only applicable to JoyCons? I have big hands and I can barely feel the rumble of JoyCons in general

How is it near defunct?? Sure, not nearly as many games use it as much as they should, but it’s still a core feature of the system and plenty of games do use it. Also it’s not only applicable to Joy-Con—the Pro Controller supports it, too. The only controllers that don’t are the retro NSO controllers and third-party controllers.

I’d think it would be a bigger deal to people because back at the launch of the Switch, the omission of one of the system’s coolest new features was nowhere to be found in the biggest launch title. I would’ve thought that that alone would have made the inclusion of HD Rumble in BotW’s sequel be a much desired thing, especially because back then I couldn’t stop thinking about how cool it would have been if BotW would’ve supported it, but I guess not many others feel the same, sadly…

Hold on hold on hold on... The Pro Controllers supported HD Rumble? ... Huh. TIL.

Also the travel medallion is so inspired by sites of grace in Elden Ring / bonfires

The Travel Medallion was in BotW... BotW was so advanced that it was inspired by games that were released after it 😲

Things we know
  • The bird gliders are called Wings, and there are a bunch of them. Seems their default ability is to just float but you can attach things to give them propulsion
  • The gachapon is a Zonai Device dispenser. Put in Zonai materials, get out Zonai Deivces. We see a couple here, but the only one we haven't seen before is a portable one-use cookpot. We know of others that aren't shown here, like Wheels, Canons, and I think whatever the tank in the last trailer was holding. There's a full inventory submenu so there's quite possibly quite a few of these overall.
Things we know/can surmise that Nintendo did not want us to know

  • Towers go up, not down. Specifically, they shoot you about 1000 m up
  • A new Green ability called Autobuild. You can pay a cost in a material called Zonite to create a green goop version of one of your previous constructions. I'd guess the cost goes up with number of components?
  • "Gloom" is back, this time as a description of an effect that seems to decrease your max health. Is this just the term for Dorf's souped up Malice or something else?
  • The objective of the second part of the demo was to create/summon one of the Zonai Shrine things using a green crystal, similar to the Shiekah orbs from BoTW

Fantastic, we can also create our own bomb arrows, I guess the only main ability we don’t seem to have a replacement for is the one for creating ice blocks?
We don't really need cryonis anymore, the function is served by the vehicles now. It's kinda hilarious how the BOTW runes are completely irrelevant now.

Yes, it always has. It’s a bit more subtle on Pro Controllers than it is on Joy-Con, but it’s there nonetheless!

And it's not just launch games, titles like Mario Party, or Mario Kart use it greatly when you grab the coin or crash into other players. Luigi's Mansion 3 also uses it greatly. Even in Splatoon 3, however in this case it seems little too much for me, like when you are jumping from spawn. Also fishing in Animal Crossing.

What absolutely floors me is that when BotW was shown at E3 2016, people had all of these unique stories and water cooler moments to share with each other, and you could see everyone being excited about uncovering what you could actually do. But that was over the entirety of the Great Plateau, a whole region of the map.

This time the non-guided preview event covers a camp atop a small mountain and a few smaller sky islands, and yet there's like, 10 times more wild shit going on than in BotW that makes me, and seemingly others as well, positively freak out.

Just goes to show that while BotW is a game about width, TotK is a game about depth. And I'm HERE for it.

You just captured what was amazing for me in this preview. There is so much going on and it's a lick of potential. Nintendo is allowing this much detail of the game out, weeks before release. That's absolute confidence.

I don't know what to tell you. I've read the previews, I've seen the footage, and the talk is all about the new abilities and the sandbox stuff. I feel like it will very much be the focus of TOTK, and that you won't be able to engage with the game properly unless you fully buy into the sandbox aspect of the game. That's why I think I won't enjoy it as much as BOTW, which was "systemic", yes, but less focused on the sandbox.
I think botw was too much of a sandbox with a bit too much empty stuff. The dungeon mechanic didn't feel like the exploring puzzle dungeon like in the old zelda. It was all focused inside the mechanic beast. What I missed was variations. The abilities you already received at the beginning of the game. The shrines where little puzzles and that was kind of what the game was beside all great new physics. Climbing and etc...

I really don't think that this zelda tottk is just a sandbox. It's just the extra part of it to make it more alive. Of course those people didn't get into the story of what you are looking for. Im really confident that this games is more like the old zelda with dungeons and puzzles and deeper story mode. Also to find special items in dungeons that could be very useful. The opposite of what botw was.
Botw was rushed at the end and they couldn't implement that what they wanted todo. So that's why tottk will have that what was missing in botw.
Don't get me wrong, botw was special and unique and I loved it. But I know that this is something a lot of Zelda fans missed in botw

Someone on the old forum, HayaoYamaneko, managed to grab it before it went private:

This is definitely Link being launched into the air by the Sheikah tower, and he doesn't have that spool of cable attached to him. This gives credibility to the tower both taking you into the sky and the underground, with the latter having the spool.

Nintendo are masters when it comes to introducing gimmicks and then not using them, so it wouldn’t surprise me if TotK doesn’t have hd rumble, sadly.

at 2:33 in the gamexplain gameplay you can briefly see the new green power is called “map”, unsure if this was known so far

Remember how in Twilight Princess we had the ruined church-like Temple of Time that led to the tower dungeon also called Temple of Time? I wonder if the Zonai tower and the ruined church on the surface both being called that is connected somehow

Sonar pinging, perhaps, to generate a 3D map of caves, etc?
Perhaps? Gotta assume it’s some new technique or tool since we see in other footage the usual menu, including the map, can be accessed in a similar way to botw

I think it is really interesting, and would address some of the "how does Hero's Path work now?" sorts of questions. The map itself really needs to be proper 3D like what we saw in BotW Hyrule Castle.

See you again in a few minutes after that addictive impulse starts kicking in.
Will try to avoid. However when the game leaks (probably next week). That's really a time to say NO and just wait. Because what we see here is just nothing compared to when it leaks into the wild.
