Previews The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom | Preview Thread

The bit where Link dives directly into the floor and lies there mangled and dead in the GameXplain preview 😭😭😭

I think Altano on IGN mentioned that generally you couldnt fuse live things with ultrahand but there were ocassions that you could - like hwen they had some items attached to them or so.
Yeah, he mentioned the korok had a backpack and that's why you can use ultrahand on them in that situation.

I can't how in the Eurogamer preview they say right away that "embargo is super strict and they can't talk about certain things" while showing the new ability in action in background. LOL

A bit of a correction here, SkillUp noticed some frame drops when he was playing. Notably in the Tower Battle.
I think what most people are talking about are the specific combat scenes in most of the previews that slow waaaay down, like Korok Forest level. And those scenes are all identical in all the previews because that's footage provided by Nintendo.

I'm sure there are other framedrops in the game but I don't think it will wind up looking that bad during a simple combat encounter.

Do you start off with more stamina? It seems there's an extra ring, not sure if in all footage

Guess we're getting 0 difficulty again due to infinite healing while paused.

Fucking mind-blowing that they kept this garbage design. So disappointed.
There's tons of Dark Souls out there for you to enjoy! 😁

That direct capture gameplay from GX people posted looks really nice. I think outlets captured better looking footage than what Nintendo provided for sure.

Read it, still not fully convinced. I'm sure it's going to be fun, but the fusion mechanics and the focus on it being a playground more than a game about exploration is not for me. We'll see, I guess. I'm sure it will be a great game, just not one that is tailor-made for me.
That was the focus of this demo, not necessarily the game.

Considering the entire purpose of the playground is to allow you to explore however you want to it seems kinda silly to say the game isn't focused on exploration.

It's honestly an accessibility measure.

Yeah, for someone like you or me. We can do that without cooking.

But for someone like my wife, she really needed to use meals all of the time in BotW, and it broke the barrier of entry for her. You could always set rules like, only having so much food, or not using it. But it really makes an absurdly complex game like BotW possible.

Kinda seems like exploration is still a big part of it, and the people who played it were simply banned from exploring too much.

I‘m not doubting the possibility of frame drops, they‘ll definitely occur. Person I responded to was talking about „heavy drops“ which I assume are gonna be down to the faulty footage. Most of the extensive slowdown seemed to happen in the most obscure moments, so I don‘t think we‘re talking about the same things.

Anyway, I don‘t think TOTK’s gonna deviate all that much from BOTW-level performance, which was pretty fine for me.

watched the Zeltik one, i'm glad he acknowledged that the building is a bit tedious at first, because it sure does look like it lol. hopefully that 'autobuild' ability makes it mostly trivial after a bit. and the gacha machine is so cool!

the game looks so great. i'm glad they still haven't gotten too detailed into the game's structure, dungeons, shrines, world layout, etc. gonna do what I can to tune out further analysis and speculation for the next couple weeks.....

One thing I hoped was in the game is that the pins you mark are presented in the overworld, so you can see it from the far distance without opening the map or the "camera". But it's the same as in BOTW.

Yeah, limitations were "You can't go there or there, but you're free to do what you want in the areas you're allowed to be."

If these harsh framedrops are really due to Nintendo's shitty-ass captureing, then...man. I really hate this company sometimes. Like there should've been at least ONE person in the team who noticed the drops and thought "Hmmmmm, maybe we shouldn't release this to the public and instead capture our footage without using a discount Elgato".

Zeltik preview: one of the new plants is able to

protect you from "the gloom".

Towers confirmed what we have guessed from the February and last trailer.

Still wondering if they go up... or down...
Nintendo and shitty gameplay captures. Name a more iconic duo.
Also that capture was probably a pre-release build, there were some gnarly LOD management issues in Zeltik's video when he neared a Gerudo area sky island.

Looks to have a massive amount of options, which will be overwhelming to some. I for one will be having a blast. It looks like you can play the game in a more straight forward way of you like to. The Crafting and building just gives many ways to solve the same solution. With all the interactions this game has and how much it pushes the hardware, would have been a nice time for Nintendo to put out a more capable system but alas we do not live in that timeline.

Sky islands look like a great way to introduce environmental puzzles that are contextualized and not just weird shrine techno rooms. Combined with the Zonai ‘shrines’ it should provide a nice amount of diversity.

Also, the music is absurdly beatufiul. The new field theme is amazing.

Also seems like they reused the battle theme from BotW for moblins. But the remixes are amazing, and completely worth it.

So much to say but I have to veer a bit and say one thing I’m not really a fan of, and that is that extended animation for Ascend. Might become tedious to watch after a while. But I love how you’re above to remain in the ground for a while.

It’s so baffling honestly. It was perfect in Skyward Sword where you could hold only a few healing items and you had to use them in real time.

You can also immediately descend while still sticking in the ground, per Eurogamer preview.

No one can tell me that we're going to get an upgrade to use that directly without Ascending first.

I think that animation is essentially a masked loading screen, so it's unfortunately necessary.

It was the focus of the preview, and the mini-direct/trailer shared last month. I don't know why it wouldn't be the focus of the game, considering it's the part of the game that Nintendo seems more willing to push and advertise.

Also, I'm not convinced that the purpose of the playground design is to allow you to explore however you want. It's transforming the world into a puzzle that they want the player to solve, versus a world that you have to uncover. I think it's a significant difference, and one I'm not convinced it's for me (at least, not as much as BOTW was).

Yeah, I genuinely think one of the criticisms this game will get from some people is it’s too ambitious with too many options. Anyone who found BotW overwhelming will have their brain explode with this game.

While this is true, doesn't that seem a little dismissive?
I know plenty of people who found BotW to be quite difficult and were only able to finish it because they could make use of its plenty items. Advocating for the removal of a feature that helps others to be able to enjoy a game and that can be easily ignored if you don't want to use it strikes me as quite egoistical in the first place, so, frankly, I think being dismissive isn't uncalled for. Other people don't deserve to suffer just because someone else feels bothered by completely optional items.

Wtf is the gloom? I'm pretty sure that's new.

Cooking is great. But there needs to be some level of challenge, either by severely limiting the amount of cooked items you can carry, or making the consumption happen in realtime. There's far better ways to provide increased accessibility other than effectively removing all challenge and tension.

This isn't Dark Souls, this is Zelda. And I never had enough meals on me in BOTW anyways, so I died a lot.
Dark Souls is far from the only game where you heal in real time.

A single cooked hearty food item is a full heal + bonus hearts. Spend 5 minutes collecting durians/radishes/truffles and you're invincible.

yeah I was pretty surprised by how long it plays just to phase through that wooden platform!

That's your choice though? Want more challenge? Then don't cook as much. I didn't.

Like BOTW it’s almost guaranteed this will get a post launch performance patch or 2. A game of this size on Switch’s old hardware will definitely have a area or action like Korok which is just tanking the framerate.
