StarTopic Visual Novels |ST| Let’s-a-read!

Anyone interested in Paranormasight?
It appeared in the previous jp Nintendo Direct!
It's by Square Enix and it's releasing next week,

It's relatively cheap plus also 20% off on the eS
hop so I went and bought it eventhough I'm a scaredy cat. XD

Very interested. It's very much in my wheelhouse and the previews sound good. Such a good price too, despite the busy time, what with Fatal Frame 4 and RE4 Remake both around the corner and Wo Long just coming out, I'll definitely try to make time to play through it.

Yup. Specially after playing the spirit hunter games, this give me the same vibes.

Ill see when I can get to it though. I am playing Octopath 2 and Azure comes in 2 weeks so eventually lol.

Got Brok the Investigator on Friday as an impulse buy to save myself from FE Engage's trainwreck of a plot. I ended up devouring this game and already got satisfied by both the story and gameplay lol. Even though it's a ADV title rather than VN, I still want to recommend it for folks interested in its post-apocalyptic setting and a thrilling story. Production value seems also high for an indie title, as there's full voice acting for all characters. In terms of art style, I found the game's 90s cartoon aesthetic quite well executed.

The biggest pull of this game for me is however the gameplay which is a unqie mix of point-and-click and bmup. This gameplay choice is rather well supported with a good attention for details, where many objects can be interacted with either the brain or the fists lol. Choosing between brain or fists to resolve situations/solve cases also matters since it drives the story to different endings. It took me roughly 12 hours to clear the first route, but subsequent ones are much faster thanks to skipping dialogues. Playtime currently sits at 15hr and is still rising.

Good scores for the Square Enix horror vn! Looking forward to diving into it myself soon!

Beat me to it. Reading some of the reviews it sounds like a great time, sleeper hit. I thought the pre-release discount was till release but it goes till later in the month.

Can someone please tell PROTOTYPE it's okay to discount their games. Seriously, I have been waiting years for their games to go on sale. They either forgot they published games on the Switch, or they refuse for whatever reason.

I mean, I'm fine if a company thinks their games are worth the full price and don't want to devalue them with sales. But some of these games are also on other platforms and do get discounts.

Why the heck are Planetarian and Clannad still full price? There are also tons of Phantom Grisaia games and they have never been discounted in all these years.

I just want to get more VNs for a good price...

I do recall, I want to say in the last 3 months I saw some, not all, Grisaia games on sale. But yeah they rarely do sales on switch which is odd, I think Looper has been the one on sale often and that game is 25$.

If that's true, then it's only Europe that doesn't get discounts. That, or Dekudeals isn't accurate when it comes to their games and price history. I check Dekudeals probably weekly to look for deals. Loopers as well has never been on sale according to Dekudeals.

Oh that sucks. Maybe it was for a physical of Loopers that I saw. I am probably following too many twitter accounts that highlight deals lol.

I played through the first route (and a bit) of Buried Stars, which I bought during an eShop sale last year. The criticisms by earlier posters about the poor translation and lack of flowchart are ones I now echo.

As I understand it, there are only three main endings/routes, but the main mechanic is raising your trust level with the other chatacters through dialog, which is largely trial-and-error based as both the intent of certain choices and the expected NPC responses are unclear. The game also autosaves after each segment and has limited save points otherwise. So beyond that first playthrough (which will lead to a bad end but unlock the ability to get the other endings), I feel the need to use a point by point walkthrough (or save scum extensively).

Game mechanics aside, the characters are still pretty compelling and the scenario suffices to keep the story moving forward. I look forward to uncoveing more, even if I'm merely following a guide.

Edit: Having gotten all the main endings (and some of the joke/other endings), I'd now say that Buried Stars wasn't worth the time I spent with it -- definitely not beyond the true ending (with routes B and C). The characters don't really have much going on beyond what you see in the original run and asking everyone about everything is tedious, particularly with the poor translation. The localization occasionally using incorrect character names ("Seth" for "Seil", swapping the name of a murdered character with another) is amusing, though.

I just finished Paranormasight last night. I am not usually one for scary games, and I didn't think it would be one, but more than once the game got my heart racing and I had to stop playing for a bit.

Definitely one of my Top 5 games of the year.

I started reading Higurashi last week. I finished Onikakushi and Watanagashi-hen and am currently on Satoko's Route. It is my first visual novel and it has been alright until now. Except for those slice of life sections. I get what the author was trying to achieve but it is kinda boring to read about a baseball game right after Watanagashi-hen. Hope it will get better soon as I'm kinda losing interest

Hi everybody, never posted in here before but there's a time for everything o/

I picked up Process of Elimination last week, and finished my first playthrough last night. Had a really good time with it, will probably unlock the NG+ scenes later this week. It's pretty similar to a mix of Zero Escape and Ace Attorney but with the tactics segments instead of more "direct" puzzles.

I'd say overall I enjoyed it a little more than Zero Escape (999 and VLR are probably better games, but I enjoyed the character writing in PoE more), and it's better than something like Danganronpa on all fronts (though I'm a known hater haha). The art and music are fantastic, and the VA work is great. The tactics segments were on the easy side overall but I don't know if that's just because I have more experience with tactics games than they expect. I really liked the character writing, though that's a bit of a double-edged sword in a game like this because it means you get a lot more upset when characters inevitably die.

If anyone is curious about the game but wants to know something before diving in (or wants content warnings or anything) feel free to ask ' w ' Definitely a recommend from me overall to anyone who enjoys the demo though

PS2 VNs Akai Ito and Aoi Shiro are getting an HD Remaster with English localization and release on Switch and Steam on May 25. They're both Romance/Horror/Supernatural with an all-female cast, and if you like multiple routes and endings, you should definitely give these a try.

I've heard great things, hopefully I can get to it during the summer lull. I got the demo downloaded but haven't started it.

I recently finished playing Virtue's Last Reward and Zero Time Dilemma, rounding out the whole trilogy (played 999 last fall).

I think of the three, I enjoyed 999 the most. I actually feel VLR was a better read, but I'm a huge sucker for 2D spritework. I also loved the unique stuff the DS version of 999 did (though redoing rooms was a massive pain haha).

Zero Time Dilemma was rough for me, mainly because it isn't a visual novel. I found it really hard to not be able to control the pace of text, coming right off of VLR (which was a very enjoyable reading experience). Overall, I enjoyed ZTD by the end, but it was easily my least favorite of the three.

I'm sort of interested in Uchikoshi's earlier works, but my wife has copies of the AI games so I'll probably check those out too!

Cool to hear you enjoyed them! I feel pretty similar - I like 999 and VLR a lot in slightly different ways from each other: 999's spritework is great, and I feel like the story is a little tighter, but it's a bit tedious to get all the endings. VLR is way more ambitious and mostly succeeds, and the narrative gimmick is fantastic, but when it's a little over-ambitious it struggles a little.

ZTD I straight-up disliked, but part of the reason why is that I played it on launch day and expected something more like VLR again, so having so many differences I liked less and with what is overall weaker writing imo kind of tanked it for me. That and some of the ableism in it was really rough in ways that targeted people like me.

I haven't played either of the AI games yet, but I did read Ever17 a while back (I think it's been almost a decade now), and it was really interesting to get to after Zero Escape, because while it's going for a different vibe overall, you can already see some of Uchikoshi's trademarks and writing preferences.

Also, if you don't mind that it has a lot more gameplay than just a VN, I think World's End Club is well worth checking out, I think it plays to his strengths quite well and some of the requirements of the story actually mitigate a lot of what I like less about his work (the cast is all children so he doesn't get to be his habitual levels of horny, and the pseudoscience bits are a little more concise)

I got VLR last year pretty cheap (after playing the AI games) but I havent started the series cause I want all the games. I have ZTD on my ebay cart, I just need to find 999 (at a resonable price lol).

I do want the nonary games on switch but who knows if thats ever going to happen.

I hope you can find it!

I feel strange about the nonary games on Switch - on the one hand, it'd be nice if they were more accessible on newer platforms. But on the other hand, one of 999's twists/gimmicks is partially ruined by not being on a dual-screen setup (which was already a "problem" with the Steam release) and I don't know if they'll figure out a better solution for a Switch port :(

That has been the number 1 thing everyone mentions. Which in part is why I want to experience the dual-screen setup first.

I do wonder how other DS titles of that nature are gonna fair, seeing as more publisher are digging up that catalogue. Ghost Trick (granted it was on phones) and EO receptions are going to be interesting. I would love a Hotel Dusk port but that is to ingrained in the ds setup.

i'd rather have the flowchart the newer versions add to 999 any day over that gimmick people talk about

by a giant margin at that

I'm very interested in those early Uchikoshi works, partially cause I just love old VNs. I needed a break from his writing after ZTD, but I definitely will check those out eventually! And I'm also totally interested in eventually checking out World's End Club. It looks neat, and sounds like it may lack some of the bs stuff from his other works haha (specifically some of the really questionable character designs, lol)

I still think Remember11 is the best thing he's made(although i've yet to get around to the AI series), some of the best pacing out there

the ending is certainly a weakness but the rest of it's good enough that it's the sort of thing that takes it from being on par with something like Fata Morgana to "just" being on par with stuff like Ryuukishi's work as a full package

World's End Club was really enjoyable, the gameplay is definitely on the clunky side but I really enjoyed the writing and the character design is super cute. It plays around with some of Uchikoshi's usual tropes, but it has... almost none of his BS? They're not weird about the kids, and the story is less mean-spirited than some of the stuff in Zero Escape.

Generally how would recommend the other games in that series? The only one I ever checked out was Ever17, and it was mostly by happenstance. I enjoyed the gimmick with the two protagonists, and the story overall, but the pacing was a little rough at points.

How would you say the others compare? And is there a best order to check them out in?

i've only ever played Ever17 and Remember11 as far as the infinity series goes but from what I understand they aren't really linked together other than some pretty minor background stuff between Never7 and Ever17

Never7 is generally viewed as fine if not quite on the level of Ever17 or Remember11 but while it does still have some of the elements the others do it's also apparently less focused on them in favor of having a much bigger focus on romance stuff than those other two so i've never been terribly interested in it personally speaking

12Riven never got translated by anyone but is also generally viewed as fine if not quite on the level of those other two, apparently it's also a spinoff

Code18 is a reboot in a school setting that is generally viewed as pretty bad, also never got translated by anyone, and Uchikoshi wasn't involved in anyways

and yeah Ever17 is kind of the opposite of Remember11 as far as pacing goes where instead of having super strong pacing throughout with a weak ending it has weak pacing and a strong ending

I see! Thanks for letting me know!

I've never been especially into Uchikoshi's outings into romance, personally, so I'll probably skip Never7 (for now, at least) but I'll see if I can't find a way to play Remember11 sometimes! Curious to see it based on your description.

I think I might get around to Higurashi first because I've been meaning to for a while now, but maybe after that.

I've read everything by 07th Expansion available in English-- they're sort of the reason I'm a VN junky hahaha. I strongly recommend checking out Higurashi, and if you like it, Umineko (assuming you haven't already taken that journey). I'm also a pretty big fan of Higanbana and Rose Guns Days, but they're not nearly as highly regarded as the When They Cry games.

Anyway, Higurashi is fun-- hope you enjoy it if you try it!

I read Umineko last year! Really, really enjoyed it (by which I mean I spent half of it bawling my eyes out). I decided to read it first because it was the one of the two that generally appealed to me more off its summary, so I figured I would have an easier time getting into it since I wasn't completely sure what writing style to expect. It was honestly a lot different from what I expected given the little I'd seen of the WTC fandom, but in a good way, and I got really invested. I took a break for a couple days after ep 5 so I could try to work out who the culprit was, and ended up getting it right and making eps 6-7 way sadder for myself.

I've heard Higurashi is a little less mature in its writing since it was written quite a bit earlier, but the part that really spoke to me most with Umineko was the thoughtfulness and care for all the characters, so I get the impression I'll have plenty to enjoy.

Umineko is a very emotional journey so I feel you lol. And good shit getting the culprit right! I had part of it down, but there was so much that I was just along for the wild ride on. I followed eps5-8 as they released and haven't actually replayed since then (over ten years!) So I really need to revisit the series at some point.

Higurashi does have a lot of thoughtfulness behind its character writing. Similar to Umineko, it takes a few VNs to start really seeing the heart of the cast and world, but once you get into the meat of it, I personally think it's a very enjoyable read. It has a lot of stupid immature scenes, but those help to establish part of the group dynamic of the main cast. Some of the fan service scenes are a bit stupid but ymmv on how much that takes you out of it. I think the fan service stuff is actually really funny with the original spritework, because it just looks super silly lol

I should really get back into HIgurashi one of these days, I stopped like halfway in because I got tired of how long the chapters(which were being released one at a time) were taking to come out

it's been like 5 years though so i'd have to start over and I kinda dread doing that with just how long I remember the slice of life stuff being at the start of every chapter

How long is one playthrough of PoE? I definitely have my eye on it and I'm going to try the demo, but the $40 price tag is a bit steep.

I typically don't have much patience for fanservice stuff, but I've been given a heads-up on it by friends and knowing some of the context means I'll probably be fine with it. The thoughtfulness behind the character writing can get me past sooo much stuff. It's hard to word, but the amount of genuine care that r07 has for his characters as people, no matter how flawed, really resonates with me in a way I appreciate a lot.

I would estimate around 20-25 hours or so, depending on how fast you read and how long you take on the tactics sections. If you want to unlock all the scenes in the game you'll have to go through NG+, because some don't unlock in NG, but that only takes around an hour or so because you can just skip through dialogue.

For me it was well worth the $40, since at this rate I think it might be my favorite game of 2023, and I'm already planning on replaying it so I can rewatch some scenes now that I have full context. But I can see how it's a hard sell if you have to pick between that or a game with a longer playtime. Hopefully playing through the demo makes the choice easier for you, either way!

Thanks! Playing the demo now and I'm really enjoying it.

One last question, does the progress in the demo carry over or do I have to start over?

Glad you're enjoying it! 😊

Yep, progress carries over.
Ended up buying the game as soon as the demo ended and played until the start of Chapter 2 investigation. That demo just did an amazing job at getting you hooked.

I started Chaos Head Noah not that long ago. I haven't made too much progress yet but I'm enjoying it so far despite the MC being really god damn annoying early on. I do hope that eventually changes. I'm kinda disappointed by the Delusional Trigger system as well. I read up on it and on your first play through it apparently doesn't matter at all and even on subsequent playthroughs it's still really just left up to you whether you want to a good or bad delusion. It's not like making a proper decision with the plot like in other VNs. Still I like the era it takes place. I'm kinda nostalgic for that late 00s internet/Otaku culture.

I've been playing Yurukill recently, and I gotta ask, does/did it run choppy on every device or is it just on mine? It really disrupts the flow of the game for me.

Unrelated to my opinion of the game:
I have to play one battle 4 times now, first it was due to losing the last second, the 2nd time the game error closed on me, the 3rd time I tried making a save after the battle, but my joycon drift caused me to load up the previous file instead 🤡, so now I'll do my 4th try tomorrow bc I can't be arsed right now.

It also made me realize I don't like Shmups + the battles are too long to go through.

Basically, I'm only in it for the art and strong va line up right now. The story.. I'm not fully sold on that yet either.

It's a pity because I was really looking forward to playing this one!

I've been playing Yurukill recently, and I gotta ask, does/did it run choppy on every device or is it just on mine? It really disrupts the flow of the game for me.

Unrelated to my opinion of the game:

I played it last year (loved it). I did not run into any choppiness (as far as I can remember) I think there were slowdowns on the battle sections, I can go back and double check. I like shmups so I would not mind replaying them.

The art and va are fantastic. Story mileage may vary, I thought it was its weakest part (it was good not great), the initial pitch is great but I felt they backed off a bit towards the end.

I picked up Yurukill a few months ago on sale. Definitely gotta give it a fair shake at some point.

Unrelated, but I recently also got A Light in the Dark. Has anyone here played it? I was worried it would be a bit trashy, but reviews said it was down to Earth and humanized the two main girls a lot, so I got it on Switch. Haven't played more than a few minutes, but the first music track was really nice.
