News Nintendo Direct announced for February 8th

Mike Bithell and Don't Nod are two devs I have utmost respect for but both are doing... visual novels. Pretty, shiny but visual novels nonetheless. How could you make a visual novel out of Tron? It's literally most action based sci fi franchise. Harmony also has an interesting premise but being nothing but a branching VN makes me lose my interest.
Did the Sumo Digital tweet turn out to be a hint for anything? Don’t recall seeing them?
I thought they were the devs of Samba de Amigo but apparently not. They just hypd the direct for no particular reason.

My suspicion is Sumo Digital leant a hand on Prime Remastered (and are now close to completing Prime 2 and 3 Remastered hnnnngh)

Anyway, here's a fun bit of lore from my Kickstarter email from Sabotage Studio, the developers of Sea of Stars:

Sabotage Studio said:
As you may remember, we were already looking at the potential for a public demo late last year. Let's just say that, when we received a formal invitation to drop it during a Nintendo Direct, it became a no-brainer..

I know i've posted it already, but i have to do it again ... i can't put my mind around this game being a prequel to The Messenger.

No Tomodachi Life, but hot DAYUM, everything else made up for that! Metroid Prime Remastered shadow drop, Advance Wars release date, Pikmin 4 release, a proper look at Zelda, Game Boy and Game Boy Advance games on NSO (was putting off buying the expansion pack, but I'm for sure doing it now for Golden Sun), Master Detective Archives: Rain;Code looks great (definitely buying that when it comes out).

But the thing that made me lose my mind with hype.....

LEVEL-5 ARE BACK, BABYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY! Decapolice looks like it'll be a hidden gem this year, a new Fantasy Life makes me super happy.... AND A BRAND NEW LAYTON! I loved this Direct so much!

Huh? How did you get that from this direct??
Reasonable question! I'm basing that assumption on the structure of the direct and the things they chose to show. The ratio of new Nintendo game announcements to continuing game support suggests, to me at least, that the bulk of Nintendo's output might be elsewhere. Their upcoming schedule of new original releases is, as far as I can tell, Zelda and then Pikmin, and nothing else currently announced. That pace of first party releases gives me the same vibe as 2011 Wii or 2015-16 WiiU.

The big difference is that this time, Nintendo has a strong pipeline of remasters and remakes to build the library in-between those games, which neither of those consoles had. They also benefit from strong ongoing third party support. That was my point really, the the end of the Switch lifespan isn't going to feel like their other consoles' final years.

Weak direct for me. The games that I liked are all ports, so no rush to play them. I want new games.

Anyway, better this way. I do not want to spend in games this semester, haha.

There’s some chatter about TOTK’s file size being over 18 GBs; if that’s true, that means the game uses a 32 GB cartridge, right?

I’d feel far better about the $70 price tag if it’s connected to a hardware change. It doesn’t soften the blow for any digital-only switch people, but the physical games crowd will at least have some justification.

That was a GREAT direct. Pretty hyped and Metroid Prime remastered looks soooo good.

The annoying thing is that narrator always says "pre-orders begin today ON Nintendo eShop". The way he says it, so slow and so many times. It's annoying after a while. But maybe it's just due to different voice-over guy.

Now now, cut him some slack, he was just as baffled as we are when he saw the Prime shadowdrop.

I’m wondering if we get a Mario direct if a Mario game is coming. Maybe for the movie and a new game. I feel like you never know with Nintendo

The Dontnod game seems to have really fallen flat. I can't see a thread for it here, let alone remember its name!
Harmony... It's a pure Visual novel and honestly quite disappointing coming from Don't Nod. Switch has already craploads of visual novels, including branching ones just like Harmony, a capable studio like Don't Nod should have been doing something different...

Also Mike Bithell's Tron game is also a visual novel. Tron. Visual Novel. Come on man.

Counting Style Savvy but not really Style Savvy as Style Savvy, I didn't do too bad! Just missed that mid game.

You know what?

I say that Baten Kaitos definitely counts as "Ridiculous cloud port", so X that tile too!

The release schedule of the H1 is incredibly strange.
We had a big january game which is getting in vogue lately and then an insane february, after that we have an uncommonly weak march and april which leads to an insane may which was usually a weaker month for Nintendo because june is usually the big month which this time is completely empty.
Like why is it like this? Why did they shadow drop metroid prime in an already packed month?
Are we really getting nothing in june? Maybe a new pokemon spin off?
Also no mario at all except mario kart dlc.

What if we get a Mario direct next month which discusses the movie, theme parks, a new 2D Mario game for holiday and a new Mario spinoff for June release?

I guess everyone’s standards are different. I’m blown away about the hype surrounding some of what was shown and released yesterday.

The voucher does.

Well, March and April are weak for you. Both are as insane as February, each has a first party game supported by some big third party names.

Weakest month is May which has nothing but Zelda and Puzzle Bubble. For people who are not into Zelda (like me, I like 2D ones) only option is Bub and Bob.

Not see what would it discuss in terms of theme parks, it will be already out by then and DK expansion is 2024. I think we are getting one more Mario Movie Direct and if 2D game is this year than that's announced in June after TotK.

March / April are dedicated TotK Direct time. It is known by my gut.

Yeah, i definitely think they'll do one last Movie "Direct" and have Charlie Day and Keegan-Michael Key say some words too.

That way, they have covered all the big VA names. First one with Pratt and JB, second with Anya Taylor-Joy and Seth Rogen, and the last one with the above ones.

I think the direct was generally pretty lame (no new 1st party game, except a remaster of a 20 years old game) and the Zelda trailer was really disappointing, to the point I'm actually scared that the game will be not reach the quality expected for the ambitious sequel, 6 years in the making, to the greatest game of the 21st century.
But I am very happy to see that Level-5 is back with seemingly good intentions, and I'm really looking forward to that new Layton game.

I watched it live yesterday with my a friend.
Both of us agreed: It was one of, if not, the BEST DIRECT of the Switch era

Do we now think some of those big rumoured 3rd party games like Batman Arkham Collection and Borderlands 3 are being held for the successor console? Could form part of a great launch line up.

Borderlands 3 got rated very recently and it was for Switch specifically. It is coming, but I'm guessing we'll have to wait a little longer. Ports take very long time, we have other "miracle ports" that are still in dev without any updates.

I don't believe Batman Arkham exists, or ever existed at all. It was just a retailer leak and it could be a mistake. Don't forget, Mass Effect Trilogy was also listed by same retailer.

My friend and I had a chat about it last night and I think, personally, if you like what Nintendo have been doing in recent years, this is more of that. If you’ve felt a bit disenfranchised, it wouldn’t do anything to change your mind.

The only thing I will say is I didn’t think the Zelda showing was particularly strong. The game will deliver, but I wasn’t blown away by it.

I thought someone came out and said Batman was an actual thing?

Yes. Plan is to record it later tonight and have it available tomorrow morning.
Interested to see your thoughts on how the direct shapes the roadmap of nintendo's 2023 and beyond potentially.
