I kid lol. I'm 50/50 on that film for many of the reasons ngpdrew stated above, so I don't really care too much either way. Definitely does seem like it's inescapable though :p
Sorry, I only brought it up because of Glass Onion getting a bunch of positive attention and me being a fan of Johnson's work. 😅 It's not brought up often I swear.

lol no worries :p

As a matter of fact I loved Knives Out and Glass Onion. Johnson's really at his best when he's making a story that he can fully control.

OK, first game of 2023 completed: God of War 3.

Now, I know they're wildly different franchises in terms of tone and gameplay... but I seriously think that this game would be a good thing to look at when making a Star Fox sequel. It's an amazing showcase of the power of 'shorter' games, and how they can create consistently awe-inspiring moments by putting most of their budget into their relatively limited playtime. Having that in a franchise that has historically been all about showcasing a system's potential in linear sequences would be incredible.

I always tell my friends that Kylo Ren and The First Order are the perfect villains for this generation of people. They all look like people who would spend their days whining about stuff on Twitter. Well guess what the modern day villain and Nazi does? Whine about stuff on the internet.

The one on the left is a Richard Spencer type. The middle one is an incel and the one on the right is a TERF (I'm taking about the character, not the actors of course). The First Order are shit villains which is what makes them great because they accurately reflect how shit real life modern villains are.
This is 100% true, but also why I didn't like them as villains, I get more than enough of that in real life, lol. My favorite villain is the hyper-competent, super-powerful, highly intelligent type that is only defeated by manipulating them somehow, exploiting one of their flaws (usually pride or disdain for those weaker), putting together an extremely clever plan or trap for them, or in some cases just gaining more power to brute force it.

Few things put me off of something harder than incompetent villains.

It took me a year and a half - but I finally beat Skyward Sword.

I'm happy that I played it, because it gives me a lot of 'oh cool' moments in terms of lore and adds a lot of cool things for BotW.

Things I liked:,
  • The foundation
  • Color palette
  • 60fps
  • Soundtrack, amazing - some of the best songs from the franchise
  • The setting
  • Skyloft
  • Groose
  • Demise - Is it Akuma, is it Mumm-ra? Or is it a little both of both? cool as heck
  • some puzzles were really cool

But the controls and combat dragged this game for a lot, the targeting system were the worst I have ever experienced in any game - 'hey look there's the final boss' let's target thin air instead. I get that some stuff just too integrated in wii controls but some of the stuff is just outrageously bad and I dont understand why it was as bad as it was. It's a big reason why it took me this long to beat.

The highs are high enough to still give it a a 7, albeit a weak one out of 10 but man, I wish controls were a bit more refined and polished.

This was exactly my experience, at the end the controls were a downer for me, even with the updated version on switch

2023 already gonna claim a GOAT by the end of the year 😭

One Yeah! = One Press F to Pay Respects

I love how instead of saying "goodbye, I'm done with YouTube" he goes "goodbye, I'm done with YouTube... at the end of the year, and in the meantime I'm gonna fuck this place up with expert chaos"

You do not want competent villains in real life
I knowwwwww but the incompetent ones hurt my head so much

Like Tr*mp is on the news right now talking about how great his taxes were and that all they showed is that he had great success and I'm like that barfing scene in Team America that I won't link because it's gross as fuck but that's so me right now

VIII > VII >>> IX
I don't think that's a particularly controversial ordering

Sure, TLJ has its haters, but I think if you move away from chronically online discourse most people liked it just fine. Some may still put TFA higher but I think the general perception is that TLJ at least tries to do something more interesting, whereas TFA is a well-made and enjoyable rehash

TROS is possibly the worst Star War of all, although I haven't seen the full holiday special

I'm just so glad that after years of hearing people trashing on him for VIII, Rian Johnson is finally getting his redemption arc with the Knives Out series.

I feel like a hipster, this dude finally becomes popular and I'm like "I've been telling yall he's great for a decade now"
Rian Johnson has been great since Brick

This is correct. 8 >7 > 9

Hot take alert: in my humble opinion, TLJ is the best movie in the entire series, and TROS is the worst movie in the entire series.

A little bit of Metroid on my screen
A little bit of Octopath Traveling
A little bit of Fire Emblem toothpaste hair
A little bit of Link gliding through the air
A little bit of Captain Falcon fast
A little bit of Mario (not Chris Pratt)
A little bit of Silksong shadow dropped
A little bit of sale on the eshop (ah)

(yes I am slightly drunk why do you ask)

Damn, I really appreciate your syllabic consistency

A great thing about having a PS5 is being able to read the headlines about Atlus, Spike Chunsoft, Konami, Square Enix, etc teasing multiple new announcements this year and not having to worry about missing out.
I don't know, the next big Spike Chunsoft game is currently announced as a Switch exclusive.

Just got through the handheld RPG section and damn I'm already feeling nostalgic and I haven't even played any of these games. GBA games had some nice pixel art. It's interesting how you don't appreciate something that used to be an abundance until it's practically gone. As a kid I would have looked at these as just some generic games in a sea of hundreds but now they're long lost treasures.

IV/V
VIII/Andor/Clone Wars
VII/VI/Rebels
Mando
Rogue One/Bad Batch
Solo
Kenobi/III
Book of Boba Fett
IX
I
II

The prequels - The SW of my childhood - are still largely terrible, and only get by through a combination of time, Clone Wars and memes.

The prequels were great, tbh.

They're very underrated and have the best world-building, lightsaber fights, and aesthetics.

Bit of self promotion, but if you wanna read my thoughts on one of Sony's biggest franchises then I've been making a series of LTTP threads on the 'other site.' Starting here:

I'd repost them here but tbh it's not exactly this site's subject matter. If I do though it'll be a mega-thread when I've finished the whole series. Either way, expect to see more LTTPs and such from me here for any older games I complete. It's hella fun writing them and it's nice to contribute something positive to these places :D

My ranking would be:

V > IV > Rogue One > VIII > Mando > VI > VII > Boba Fett > III > Solo > Obi-Wan > II > I > IX

That's all I've seen (I'm partway through Andor which I expect will rank quite highly)

The hardest to rank was Obi-Wan and I/II (I always put I and II together with II slightly above, I know that's not standard). I think Obi-Wan might be slightly below tbh

EDIT: I would say V through Mando are the ones which good without qualifications. VI and VII have issues, but overall I like them. Boba Fett through Solo are not good but have their moments. Obi-Wan and below are bad

World-building: agree
Aesthetic: eh, too computer generated for my taste, but I can appreciate the direction they were going for
Lightsaber fights: Ep I had great fights, but II and III got too acrobatic and weightless for my taste. I actually loved the weightyness of the fights in VII and the sheer visual flair in VIII, so I would say those were my favorites along with I

The prequels aesthetics were very pleasing back then in theaters, but imo they are one of the films that have lost the most in the conversion to HD/UHD, it really brings out the limitations of the tech that was used to make them.

My new Star Wars hot take is that, if the sequel trilogy had to be made in the way it was, I kinda wish Rian Johnson got to end the trilogy. A big complaint about Episode VIII is that it didn't leave enough room open for IX, leading to a lot of that film's problems. I don't fully agree with that, but I think Johnson could've made a film that gave a thoughtful but fun finale to the saga. Of course, in this universe, I doubt we'd get Knives Out any time soon, so maybe this was a blessing in disguise.

My old Star Wars cold take, meanwhile, is that, more than any specific director or writer, the problem with the sequels is Disney/Lucasfilm. It is so, so obvious that they went into this with very little planning. As a result it's easy to see the seams. This was very clearly a trilogy made for the sake of continuing the franchise over telling an interesting story. You don't need a grand vision of every detail, and getting different directors' takes on things could work (though they also should have taken 3 year gaps in between instead of 2 to give these more time to cook), but in the end, they made a mess of a trilogy that few will end up looking back on fondly.

I'm not the biggest Star Wars fan out there, but I always liked ep. 1-6 for what they were and tried to do.
Ep. 7-9 (to varying degrees, but ultimately talking about the new trilogy on the whole) have retroactively made me enjoy the entire saga less, so -- yeah, not a great feeling I'm left with.

I'm about to go run some errands and thanks to this post I'll be bluetoothing in some Super Metroid music to blast in my truck.

Specifically Luminist's stuff:

man, hardware synth is so cool

My Star Wars hot take is that they should just forget the sequel trilogy ever happened and restart from scratch. They're kinda already doing this with the Mandalorian and Ahsoka.

Well, okay, on second thought: going back against my previous comment.

I did play a good time-travel story at one point.

(Ocarina of Time, anyone?)

It had nothing to do with whether or not it made sense; I just found it "interesting" and, to be honest, I think time-travel as an "interesting" mechanic in a story is probably the best way to play it.

I just found Looper to be boring in that regard.
