StarTopic Future Nintendo Hardware & Technology Speculation & Discussion |ST| (New Staff Post, Please read)

based clarification

sorry that my take disturbed the peace of the thread but y'know I really wouldn't mind my thoughts being brushed off instead of being seen as demonstrative of the mental decay of the thread or whatever. you all have an especially earnest community here which I appreciate but sometimes it feels like the level of engagement you collective afford everyone is detrimental

I know "let me take shots in the dark with no pushback" sounds shitty but mainly I think I shouldn't be seen as a barometer of doom

And that's why I said I was going to launch you into the sun, well, that and the whole fake Drake leak. Too bad trash panda, you fate is sealed!

I don't know that you are seen as the barometer of doom. You are the most famously fickle of the thread, which is fine - I find it delightful! But it draws every other pessimist out of the woodwork. Unless you're going in the opposite direction, and you pull every optimistic fantasist out of the woodwork. The woodwork is packed!

As far as I'm concerned, you're allowed to be whatever you want, we know who you are :)

worst case scenario is that plans have changed and it's delayed until later in 2023. this obviously wasn't the original plan but for who knows what reasons Nintendo have pushed it back. even in that scenario I would contend the Zelda delay was still related to the hardware and was to buy time to have it ready or at least have the option to have it ready. I will say that would be extremely dissapointing as we could do with this new Switch right now, not in what would likely be 12 months time. but it is what it is, people are still gonna be buying Switches and Nintendo is gonna Nintendo.

in that case no I would prefer not to be launched into the sun
Jupiter it is. Enjoy getting crushed by it's gravity as you descend into it's gaseous interior until you reach a point were the gas bellow you is too dense for you to keep falling and your corpse will forever float as it gets ripped apart by the winds. You'll love the experience :^)

No thanks I've already been to Disney world

That was 3 pages where half the people posting were coming completely unwound over a single word and the other half were shitposting.
Time to turn notifications for this thread off, I guess.

This topic is incredible to read.
It has holy scriptures (the Nvidia hack, the Linux thing), a dogma (H1 2023, 12SMs...), a few revered messiahs, some heretics (me for example, who believes that 2024 or late 2023 are more likely for a new console), some staunch believers who get very defensive whenever the dogma is put into question, a few fake prophets who could very well be the messiahs, some followers scared of the apocalypse (the "doomers"), different branches (the followers of the pro, the followers of the successor) and finally, the promise of a better tomorrow thanks to an almighty god named Drake.
I'm convinced that the next major religion will be born on the internet.

For anyone interested in how Cyberpunk runs on a 750 Ti after the FSR update :

Yes. The information is significant and requires 100% confirmation from numerous sources before I can even consider reporting/sharing it. It's not something I can approach lightly.
Just for the entertainment of this place, would you be willing to say if it alters what you know from end of 2021 significantly or not?

If you don't want to say more at this stage, it's obviously nfully understood and I'll keep my fingers crossed you can confirm what you have soon - or Mochi will just spit it out in some days ;)

Rather not share specifics at this stage due to concern it ends up becoming headlines prematurely.

I also need to say, if Nintendo would decide to release Switch Next later than first half of next year, I rather want them to delay Zelda with it and still launch it with new hardware.
I'd rather wait longer to play it in 4K and they can give me Metroid Prime Full HD in the meantime.

Having said that, I still think a May release is perfectly possible.

I love it when you can feel a continental shift in relief and newfound excitement going on thanks to a single post and I am totally not projecting here.

At the end of the day, there's a lot pointing to new hardware next year. Beyond Nate's previous comments, there are various technical and logical details. The Nvidia leak, the Linux commit, basically soft confirming things that kopite7kimi said. Plus, the Switch has had a revision every other year, with 2023 being the next revision year. Sure, patterns can be broken, but why would they break the cycle when they decided to create one with none other than the Switch OLED, which disappointed many as it wasn't enough. It wasn't substantial, but they stuck to a pattern. Why would they not stick to it with a more meaningful upgrade that we know exists, for one of their most anticipated games, Tears of the Kingdom?

This February, Shuntaro Furukawa said the Switch is in the middle of its life cycle and is “ready to break a pattern of our past consoles." What does that even mean? At the very least, we can expect Nintendo to do things differently. Does that mean less risk with gimmicks, and sticking to what works (hybrid console)? Does that mean expanding the family of systems, creating a successor while still supporting previous versions, as the true product is the software (like apple does with the iPhone)?

Logic might suggest that it's too late for a "Pro" and too early for a "2" but it doesn't matter. My guess is they will release it, whatever it is and it will be up to the consumer to decide which Switch to buy. Eventually, when the original switch stops receiving support, Nintendo will have their flagship console in a comfortable price category, tackling the inflation issue.

"Heavy" could refer to anything. From delayed, to cancelled, to a new game... But I have the insight it is for announcement or reveal of this system. This sort of information looks like something you have to confirm(rapidly) and be really sure of what you heard in order to not have another OLED model-like situation. Saying this next Switch is delayed or some game is in preparation for it is big (for us but for the general public no) but will certainly not make as much noise as saying this thing would be announced in 2 months or something (even the general public will hear about this). You have to be really careful handling this kind of information. And I think Nate's behavior lines up with what I'm saying.
I will say this again.

You rightfully said in the rest of your quote that some external factors can modify the company's strategy on the short and long term but I think that the right interpretation of what Furukawa said about the Switch lifecycle is that it is here to stay. That thing will be supported until 2027.

Breaking pattern probably means they will release the switch 2 after 10 years.

The new Drake barometer will drop today. Fortnite is getting UE5.1 features including lumen and nanite. Series and ps5 will feature them in 60fps and off at 120fps mode. Fortnite on Switch runs at 30fps, so maybe Drake can do the same with lumen enabled?

If TotK has a similar amount of technical polish as Splatoon 3 I'm completely fine. Splatoon 3 was so carefully scoped out for the hardware, it looks like they hit their artistic vision completely. If they're going for 1080p30 for TotK with a similar amount of tact it's going to be fine on Switch OG.

also botw is still one of the best looking games of the past years despite it being a wii u game at heart :O

Sorry I've not read the thread for a while but what is this shit?

I've said this before but why on earth are people expecting TotK to run at 1080p on the current Switch when the original (much less ambitious game) runs at an average of about 800p... I'd honestly expect it to run closer to 720p most of the time when docked.

You never know because we kind of thought all those heavy hitters in 2022 were good hints at this year release but well...
Still I would be very surprised if they released such a big game as zelda all by itself in early 2023, so that's still my goal.

Well, they had 6 years to optimize the engine. Which was built more for Wii U than for Switch.

I’m not saying you’re wrong, but that’s probably the reason people hope for it.

Kind of a moot point if often games get remastered with exactly the same improvements you'd see on an emulator
Yeah that's certainly a take lol... Developers of modern 3D games would ALWAYS prefer their game be played at the highest resolution and framerate possible. 720p-900p on large, modern 4k HDTV's look pretty horrific and I bet it takes them a while to adjust when they play it for the first time on consumer hardware after seeing it with such amazing IQ in development environments.

Of course they've optimised for Switch but personally I feel much of the performance gained will be used on other things like the engine showing more polygons, more enemies on screen, better visual effects etc rather than using those resources to increase the rendering resolution.

TotK running at even dynamic 1080p just seems like fantasy at this point when we looks at what the original and even other, newer Nintendo games run at.
