I haven't personally heard any of the nominated actors to make a judgement, but Aimee-Ffion Edwards as Mio is one of the very few things that are truly stellar in Xenoblade 3, like so, so good.

Maybe I'm alone in that one, though.

This kind of awards are similar to the Oscars. What I mean is that only certain genres qualify for goty, in a similar manner that only certain movie genres can win a best movie category.
No matter how good an action or a horror movie is there will never win a best movie oscar (super rare examples like Lotr excluded).
In TGA only action adventure/action rpg will ever have any chance to win or even nominated. Maybe an indie once in a while or a jrpg only to promote genre diversity.
I mean why can't a racing game nominated for goty? Or a puzzle game? Or a 2D platformer? Is Plague Tale Requiem really a better game than most indie games released this year? Also the fact that from all the great indie games that got released in 2022 they decided to nominate Stray, basically a meme game proves that they just needed an indie game in there, but didn't care to actually search for something better.

She was also a huge standout in Elden Ring so I was surprised between the two games she didn't get a nomination.

Don’t worry folks, instead of watching Geoff Keighley’s The Game Awards, you can instead READ Derachi’s Some Game Awards that will be occurring RIGHT NOW

Best Ongoing Game: Monster Hunter Rise though Fortnite is a close second as they DID add Goku this year

Best RPG: Live a Live

Most Anticipated game: that re-release of Elevator Action Returns that’s out next month

Best Game I didn’t expect to love as much as I did: RAILGRADE

Content Creator of the year: My Life in Gaming

Best Performance of the year: Shinshu Fuji as Kaito in Lost Judgment’s DLC The Kaito Files

Game of the Year: YAKUZA ZERO TAKES IT AGAIN 5TH YEAR IN A ROW

How I see most anticipated game playing out (in order)
  1. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Fallen Kingdom
  2. Final Fantasy XVI
  3. Starfield

  4. Bj7MhbhCAAAzAnY.jpg
  5. Resident Evil 4

Best Performance of the year: Shinshu Fuji as Kaito in Lost Judgment’s DLC The Kaito Files
Counterpoint: This award should go to Kenta Sasa as Shirakaba in The Kaito Files for somehow turning a complete joke of a character into a halfway decent performance.

  2. Final Fantasy XVI
  3. Starfield

Here's how I see it playing out: I crash the stage yelling THE OUTER WORLDS 2, MAN THAT'S IT, THAT'S THE MOST ANTICIPATED GAME UNTIL IT COMES OUT AT WHICH POINT THE OUTER WORLDS 3 WILL BE THE MOST ANTICIPATED GAME

And as burly guards punch me in the gut and drag me away, a murmur in the crowd raises: "Which one is that? Is that the space game where you fly around the galaxy trying to figure out the mysteries of the universe, or the one with all the corporations? I always get them mixed up."

Games media love 3rd person action-adventure games with strong narratives.

Stray is a disappointing inclusion as the indie pick (it was fine, nothing special) but thinking about it it's also a completely unsurprising one. Totally fits the style of game that tends to be favoured.

This is like how best animated film at the Oscars almost always just goes to Disney's biggest movie of the year.
This is how basically every category at The Game Awards feels every year lol. It never feels like a particularly inspired breadth of games gets any kind of spotlight during the event. But really it's fitting for an event that's clearly just trying to be a diet E3 and is happy to read major category winners off-camera during ads instead of actually giving any love and respect to the games present. Surprised people still pay any mind to the event, really. But at least there will be a neat orchestra at the end for 5 minutes. That's how you know they really love the games.

Wild that Spiderman 2 isn't even on there. Feel like it's at least more anticipated than that RE4 remake.
I was actually just thinking that. It is a strong list, and that just tells me 2023 is going to be a hell of a year for gaming.

Animal crossing got rightly nominated for goty and then the asshole audience straight laughed when it came up. Thinks hat was TGA anywya.

This has been a great year for indies, I doubt there's a clear consensus for nominations and winners

Nominations for best indie at TGA:

🔸 Cult of the Lamb
🔸 Neon White
🔸 Sifu
🔸 Stray
🔸 Tunic

And there's more missing, like Rogue Legacy 2, and seems like people are hyped about Vampire Survivors recently

I don't see RE:Verse anywhere in the lists (any of them, I triple checked, dammit).
I want, nay, demand answers, immediately. Betrayalton, Geoff. How could you do Capcom dirty like this.

That reminds me I really need to play cult of the lamb. I think I forgot to put it on my wishlist when it launched which is the main way I forget about indies

She could have been nominated twice. She was also very good as Ranni in Elden Ring.

Lack of gameplay most likely. The reception to the recent RE4 showcase was overwhelmingly positive, whereas we’ve heard absolutely nothing about Spider-Man 2 for over a year.

Hey they didn't forget xenoblade this time
Me watching cats as they watched people play Stray >>>>> 90% of games that came out this year, at least.

On that note, it's fine as a GotY candidate. I think Xenoblade is the bigger atrocity as pretty much any of the other big Nintendo games from this year are more worthy of the Nintendo spot in that list, but I don't think that calls the nominating process into question or anything.
You don't seriously think pokemon is more worthy do you?

Just seen best content creator nominees, what does Jerma have to do to be nominated? Seriously, his streams are some of the most inventive and funny around but he literally never gets nominated.

Jerma 100% should have been nominated, this has been one of his biggest years too, though I guess him and Ludwig kind of share an audience till an extent.

This is why I think SF6 should be on there, maybe traditional fighting games are still too small but the response to the beta was so overwhelmingly positive it feels like a real miss here.

Aw, Harry McEntire wasn't nominated (he's Noah in Xb3). His performance was stellar.

If Xenoblade 3 doesn't win OST of the year, I'll speak like a nopon for a month

Yo Geoff Keighley

You need to hire 100 floutists for your orchestra

It must be done.

Of course Xenoblade 3 won't win. But I am so amazingly glad it will be in the GotY orchestra and is getting recognition.

It is one of the best scoring games this year.

I know some people scoff at the notion that 3rd person, narrative action games get some sort of favoritism with awards, but...c'mon...

I’m using the Japanese VO, but Edwards has a great voice. I had no idea she was in this! Liked her a lot in Detectorists.

No, I'm not much for non-Snap Pokemon.

Actually, I'm looking at the list of Nintendo releases and there are two games that I could see in XC3's spot that I personally would understand: Kirby and the Forgotten Land and Bayonetta 3.

Nintendo went out of their way not to make many games for me this year, I guess.

(I did generally enjoy Mario and Rabbids, but I'm at the end and now think it's fairly significantly worse than the original and really got long in the tooth toward the end. Whereas I would have argued for Kingdom Battle to make this list in 2017 - unsuccessfully, and that's fine because 2017 was bananas) - I can't find my way to doing that for Sparks of Hope in 2022.)

Both Triangle Strategy and Live A Live getting nominations for best role playing? That comes as a bit of a positive surprise to me, but well deserved.

Not that they have any chance to win with Elden Ring being in there as well, but still.

They really threw Xenoblade up there as a pity nomination for Nintendo, huh. Surprised at no Bayo.

I'm not complaining that it gets some recognition, good for Monolith Soft. But none of this really matters because the only REAL nominations are Elden Ring and GoW because this shit's transparent as they come

I feel like most years it usually comes down to just a couple nominees. Last year was exciting because there was no clear frontrunner. But yeah, it's clearly ER vs Ragnarok.

No one else will agree with me on this, but I have to say it: they need to cap the amount of times a game can be nominated to 4 times. Because the same 4 games are nominated for every award.

To show why I feel this way, I’m listing categories that are the exact same list as Game of the Year but with two games replaced with a different one, those being:

Best Game Direction (Immortality instead of Plague Tale and Xenoblade 3)
Best Narrative (Immortality instead of Stray and Xenoblade 3)
Best Art Direction (Scorn instead of Plague Tale instead of Xenoblade 3)
Best Score and Music (Metal: Hellsinger instead of Plague Take and Stray)
Best Action/Adventure (Tunic instead of Elden Ring and Xenoblade 3)

God of War and Horizon are on all of 6 of these lists, Elden Ring is only not in for best Action/Adventure, and Stray is only not in for best Narrative and Score & Music. And it’s not like God of War, Horizon, Elden Ring, and Stray aren’t nominated for other awards. Best Audio Design and Best Performance are also almost the exact same list of games. It’s just boring having the same 4 games for every award, you would think only like 10 games release this year.

It’s still an improvement over 2020 where The Last of Us Part 2 had 11 nominations and won 7 of them, as while God of War Ragnarok has 10 noms, Elden Ring will at least provide some competition with its 7 noms. But damn there’s just no variety in these nominations outside of the genre specific ones like best indie and best family game. There absolutely is a bias towards story driven action/adventure games, which is why last year was such a breath of fresh air with its noms, especially for Game of the Year. I hope we see more lists like that in the future, where all the noms aren’t just SIE and FromSoft games. Not that they aren’t good, but I would like these award shows to actually highlight the entire industry more often.

I think it's unavoidable that any awards show will have its own sweethearts and biases, and "politics" will matter more than quality sometimes (as quality is subjective, especially with so many different games to put on the same basket)... It's just like the Oscars, everybody knows which kind of movies have a chance of winning or not, and that some awards are given based on non-artistic criteria ("aww this person has been trying for so many years, they deserve it this time, don't they?") or to entries that will easily be forgotten merely months or even weeks after because they were put there mostly through lobbying. It doesn't seem like a specific TGA issue.

Cool to see the same, like, five games nominated in every category lol. What a great award show. Glad to have a show that deeply cares about the entire gaming industry! /s

Nintendo’s released a ton of great games this year, but really if only one was going to be nominated for GotY then I’m glad they went with Xenoblade. Hopefully it at least gets best music. Kitty Archer was robbed you right muppets.

Hogwarts Legacy getting nominated for most anticipated is gross.

Happy for Xenoblade fans! I may not count myself among your number, but it's good to see Xeno 3 get the recognition I'm certain it deserves.

Overall this seems like a solid list? Stray seems like a bit of an oddball choice. I haven't played it (eventually I hope to get around to it), but I don't remember it lighting the world on fire. It was more like, hey this game is free with PS Plus Extra, oh wow it's not too bad. That doesn't scream GOTY candidate to me.
