What even is time, truly?
A haunting concept, an accursed knowledge given those creatures of higher cognition, a stalking beast that haunts us all our days from which we can neither run nor hide, a ticking count of existential doom, signaled by the looming imposing moon.

Wanted to joke that it's up to Wii U, but I would say retro is up to DS/Wii genuienly
That’s what I was wondering considering 3DS and Wii U are both discontinued / dead systems in five months lol.

I would also say the Wii / DS gen myself, but it feels like when you talk about either 3DS and Wii U you are talking about relics at this point despite them getting games in the last four to five years or so the way people have moved on lol.

Yeah, I do think you can make an argument for 3DS/Wii U but I just went off of 2 generations ago basically. I don't think the Gamecube was considered retro during the Wii lifespan at least? I don't really think calling the 3DS retro is wrong at this point tho, it is almost 12 years old after all.

Cool we got some new boards. Intrigued by the retro board. How old is retro though? What’s the cutoff?

We were discussing this when setting up the board but ended up deciding it was such a subjective concept that we wouldn't put down a hard line from above. I think most people considered pre-Wii U/3DS retro, but personally my idea of retro is 00's and older, e.g.

alright this is very annoying of me but does anyone else think "Bonus Levels" should be "Warp Zone" and "Warp Zone" something else?

(also I thought for sure the latter was a Mario board until I clicked it)

I also thought it’d be Pokemon and Mario at first glance yeah, but it’s easy to accept as Retro. You are going back to a different era basically.

When people call the Wii retro

also also was convinced it was Mario & Pokémon, especially with the green pipe

had a moment of “heh heh heh my shitpost not only helped destabilize Garbage Galaxy but was also part of the rich tapestry that bagged up mario, shoved him in the trunk, and drove him to an undisclosed location”

alas

I think an interesting thing with the retro discussion is if it’s about availability or about technology. So availability-wise I default to Wii / DS at this point. While you can buy second hand, none of those games are being sold now. Wii U and 3DS are knocking at that, but some people still have hardware and software libraries handy and at least for the next five months you can still buy new games easily with the eshop. They aren’t dead yet, despite so many moving on.

@Raccoon mentioned component cables, but I think the meaningful difference is really between N64 backwards and GameCube forwards. N64-era games due to hardware limitations were so experimental in design whereas once you hit GameCube, a lot of those games strongly resemble the ones we still play and enjoy today.

I disagree that N64 games were experimental due to hardware limitations. In fact, I'm always surprised how ambitious many early 3D games were. I think they were so experimental because no one knew how to make 3D games so everyone was learning on the spot. By the time the GCN era came around, things started to settle on what worked best.

Yeah I meant that in part too. I love older games as much as the latest ones.

I can't call the Wii, 360 and PS3 retro, because we're still playing games made on the same style of those days. Nothing really changed, there was no leap since then.

graphics, resolutions, output? yeah, those got better;.. but game design has been stagned for a long while. So in that sense, they are still pretty modern to me.

You won't ever see an Indie game trying to make a retro throwback of that era of games, like we do have with 8-Bit, 16-Bit and lowpoly 3D games.. and not just because of aesthetics, but because trying to replicate games of that era would be just making a regular game nowadays

I have a question regarding NSO : I'm currently part of a family plan from a friend. It is the basic subscription. I have bought some vouchers (I am in Europe, we still have that). If I exist the family plan and take a new subscription on my own, I suppose I will still have my vouchers right ?

Oh, we're defining retro? This came up on the staff server when I was a mod lol

To me, retro specifically means 16-bit and older. When a modern game is described as "retro-inspired", no one pictures a PS2 game lol. I could see an argument for the first generation of 3D games being included, but I think the 2D to 3D jump is the most obvious delineation point. While I do get that definitions can and should change over time, to me using "retro" to just mean "older than <arbitrary number> years" is reductive and makes the term kinda meaningless

Had a mighty urge to listen to the Live A Live remake OST.

So I had to pop the game in and open the jukebox, because it's not on YouTube or any streaming service (that I have) 😭
A lot of Squaresoft soundtracks are on iTunes, but even then it’s weird like how you can get the first two Bravely games there but not BD2 which is only on Spotify.

Given the weather here this week that totally checks out

I’m partial to the Retronauts metric of 10 years. Generations don’t really work for PC/mobile/web and with console generations getting longer it helps make a bigger distinction between something like a launch title and something that was released in a system’s twilight years. And is I’m seeing with Jeremy Parish’s video series you really need to have general sense of the context of the work and what else was going on in the industry at the time. So a year based approach just makes a lot of sense.

That’s what SiriusXM does. They do vinyl era, cassette era, etc.
I forget when it happened but it was a bit surreal when SiriusXM dropped their stations for the 30’s and 40’s music to make way for newer decades.

Retro is all about feeling and arbitrary definitions.

10 years ago? Not retro, because I refuse to lump Batman: Arkham City: Armoured Edition in with pong.

15 years ago? Mario Galaxy? No?

20 years ago? Metroid Prime is quite literally retro. Mario Sunshine couldn’t be as much of a mess with modern capabilities. Animal Crossing was, like, fun, and not a modern capitalism simulation.

20 years it is!

Yeah I'd argue first gen 3D is still retro. When I see something like Toree or Super Kiwi 64 I definitely think "retro," as it has a definable older generation look. But once you get into stuff like Gamecube or X360, I'd say their look is similar to current but running at lower resolution.

Getting dangerously close to needing a CD era for classic rock. That’s when part of my soul disappears. Wait until the iPod era comes and you know you’re old as shit
If we get to a point where we define music generations by Apple products I will yeet myself into the pacific

How to identify if something is Retro:

First ask yourself, are YOU retro? Are your days of being hip and cool long past you? Would some hipster wear you their neck ironically? If so, then you are retro and that means your favorite games growing up are retro.

I’m hearing Radiohead, Green Day, and Nirvana more regularly on the classic rock station here. Totally bracing for Linkin Park in a few years.

Exactly! NES, SNES, and N64. 😁
and technically Atari 2600

My local "classic R&B" station plays Cardi B regularly, so I dunno if radio stations can be trusted.

I was literally just now thinking about writing a Garbage Galaxy Roost thread called "No one would care about them if they were Bapple products"

I agree with you. To me, "retro" isn't about the age of a game, it's an idea that represents 16-bit and older games. That's not to say that the games I grew up with aren't old. They definitely are old because I'm old. Those games would all be grouped together with the 16-bit and older games in the "old games" pile. But that's why I think differentiating between "retro" and "old" is helpful, because it helps to categorize these games abd makes conversations easier when we can understand that when someone is talking about "retro" games, they aren't talking about the Xbox 360. Yes, those games are old now, but they aren't what people usually mean when talking about retro games.

In fact, I would say that the people who jump into a conversation about retro games and start talking about PS2 games are sort of like the people that jump into a conversation about Final Fantasy games to say that Chrono Trigger is the best Final Fantasy game. Like yeah, in both situations those people are technically a part of the conversation, but it's sort of understood that those things weren't being discussed in the moment.

Please boss, don't let Suswave off Mario, he's all I have, please boss don't do it, don't do it-

I think the idea of a Pokémon specific board works because it's such a big multimedia franchise, moreso than any other Nintendo brand. So that's neat!

Anyone mind giving me a very short summary of the status of upcoming Nintendo hardware? That thread is intimidating and I don't even know where to begin reading.
