News New N64 games announced for NSO: Pilotwings 64, Mario Party 1/2/3, Pokémon Stadium 1/2, Excitebike 64, 1080° Snowboarding, and GoldenEye 007

GoldenEye is apparently age gated on the NSO app (hidden with parental controls when that's active presumably), that could open up the potential for Conker's Bad Fur Day.
Oh 👀 Now that is very interesting to learn.

I mean, it might still be a slim chance given it's M when Goldeneye is only T, but if they can filter games based on the parental controls app maybe there's hope yet

Announcing Pokémon Stadium 1 and 2 before announcing GB(C) on NSO or some equivalent for the Gen 1 and 2 games to be playable on Switch was a bold move. I'm curious to see if they release them in time for Stadium, because that's like half the point of those, even with those sick minigames.

The no pokemon transfer disclaimer for the stadium games completely deflated my hype for them tbh lol
I think, by the time they come out, there will be a way to transfer Pokémon to them.

They’re probably coming out after February, aka Pokémon Day. And Nintendo might very well have a Direct before they are added to NSO.

Crazy how Switch is just getting the GoldenEye ROM while Xbox gets the remaster! I was really hoping that would make it to Switch, but I guess it's a miracle that it's being re-released at all.

Is this the first time Pilotwings 64 is getting re-released?

No one got the remaster. Both Xbox and switch got the N64 game.

Really? Xbox isn't getting that leaked remaster, just an emulated ROM? Hadn't heard about this.
It's "remastered" in the sense that the n64 game on xbox will run at a better frame rate, be 4k, have achievements, etc.

What the game isn't is the leaked Goldeneye HD that was going to release on the 360.

I'm surprised! I thought that they would have just used that 360 version as a base. Guess not!

I still would have loved to have that better framerate on Switch, but what can you do?

Yup seems they’re using the same emulator as jet force Gemini and Conker in the RR collection

They need to invite Ubisoft to the party. I want all four of their N64 games:
Rayman 2
Tonic Trouble
Buck Bumble
Rocket Robot on Wheels

And Take Two:
Body Harvest
Space Station Silicon Valley

Going off SF64, Goldeneye and Pilotwings are both going to run much smoother. Slowdown tends to get eliminated even when they stick to the native cap

Now to hope it's not filled with emulation bugs!

I imagine getting Nintendo to agree to just this was probably a big ask, look at the insane compromise of "no online on Xbox", that Microsoft had to agreed to.

Interesting thought: with Harvest Moon 64 only coming to the JP NSO service, they're gonna need a western only N64 game to compensate for us, just as they did with Pokemon Puzzle League/Custom Robo.

Feels like a good time to plop Cruis'n USA down in there. Maybe Killer Instinct Gold or something.

That's actually pretty crazy. I would have thought that the 360 remaster would be on both systems, but maybe they just couldn't come to an agreement regarding it and this was the best they could do.

I'd assume Nintendo just wanted the original N64 version as a big selling point for NSO. Obviously they didn't want Xbox to have the shiny remaster while they just got a ROM, so just giving Goldeneye the Rare Replay Conker/JFG/Blast Corps/KI Gold treatment was the best they could do.

Smash 64 is gonna be the new Earthbound where they release it randomly years down the line for no reason.

I doubt that was a stipulation. Microsoft's emulator just doesn't have built-in online like Nintendo's

It's possible a finished version of the 360 remaster or a new remaster/remaking that comes to both Nintendo and Microsoft platforms could also be in the works, much in the same way the Trials of Mana localization/port in Collection of Mana eventually gave way to the remake of Trials of Mana. I wouldn't hold my breath for that unless Nate or someone who's leaked GE was coming confirms "there is a separate remaster in the works".

According to the Xbox blog, rare itself did the port on Xbox and enhanced the controls to add dual stick support. Let's see what NERD did in the NSO version.
While it's certainly possible to force N64 emulators to map the c-buttons to the left stick and analogue stick to the right stick on modern controls, it never feels right. Much like anyone who's tried played Mario 64 DS on a 3DS will tell you it always feels off. This is of course further compounded by the fact I'm pretty sure Goldeneye's default control stick layout is more doom inspired with aiming up and down mapped to c up/down and moving forward, back, and turning to the stick.

that would require them to get the esrb to re-rate the app (it's already rated teen.)
rare replay had an identical setup of locking more mature games if parental controls were active, but the entire collection got an m rating regardless.

I just remembered that GoldenEye has a 16:9 mode for widescreen TVs. I wonder if the N64 NSO app will be updated with a fill screen size setting to get true widescreen

For Goldeneye on PC emulators it's better to use one of the two-N64-controller options and map them both to a single gamepad for analog control all around, but I don't think NSO emulators have ever done anything so game-specific.

I’m hoping HM64 is still coming and they just didn’t announce it yet because they have to negotiate with a different rights holder.

Natsume has agreed to include other games on NSO. Hopefully they’ll agree to let their Harvest Moon games be a part of it, too.

But Cruis’n USA should definitely also come to NSO.

Goldeneye won't get dual analog support, or gyro, I'm guessing. Kind of a raw deal if you ask me.
I wonder if modern shooter controls would break the game. There’s not exactly a lot of aiming required in Goldeneye, and even then there’s heavy use of auto-aim.

I’m shocked. No mentioned of Smash 64 yet
It’s the last first-party N64 game really, and the one I want the most. I was sad that we didn’t see it today. Hopefully it doesn’t get skipped like it did on Wii U VC.

From where would you transfer? There are no GB/GBA games on Switch (yet).

Best part of those games are the minigames anyway.
They could have just not mentioned that at all if transfers were indeed possible/planned next year. Would be weird to go back on it.

Nintendo should release SSB64 on NSO to gauge the interest in a brand new Smash game.

That's a decent option for single player, but if you want the true GE experience of 4 players locally it's not feasible.

..omg if this ends up being the way to get rid of the border I may try Goldeneye for the first time

I knew the NES and SNES apps had screen settings for 4:3 and pixel perfect, but forgot they didn't have a stretch/fill option. I'd never use it, except in this case...

The lack of transfers in Pokemon Stadium doesn't bother me too much since a lot of my interest in those games comes more so from the multiplayer aspects, and I had fun with just rentals back in the day. Still quite surprised it's happening without GB transfers, since I'd always assumed that was the reason it never reached Virtual Console.

The massive copyright blurb for the N64 games from the direct really puts into perspective how much of a hassle getting GoldenEye on this service would've been; definitely has to be the most they've pushed for a single title thus far.

Speaking of, I think we're about to see it release relatively shortly, as the Nintendo Switch Online playlist on NoA's channel still has a privated video alongside the Direct video. Worth noting that all the JP media for GoldenEye dates it for 2023, while internationally it is simply 'Coming Soon'. Nintendo UK's site also lists GoldenEye first, with everything else following the order they were shown in the Direct.

Makes it likely that GoldenEye will be launching this month, and that Japan will get something else to fill in the gaps in the meantime.

One last thing from me; gotta update this table with these newly revealed games!

If Goldeneye does launch this in 2022 then it appears that the one-game-per-month rule will continue to hold, and the last game in this batch will arrive in May.

That’s a great table, @MondoMega ! Really hope Bomberman 64 is coming someday too.

I agree that it seems possible GoldenEye could release sooner rather than later.

Considering they had to contact Konami for the Mario party use of the Hudson logo, wonder if they licensed any other games.

Also yeah, Goldeneye 64 being this month’s or next month game (with Pilotwings 64 being in the other month) makes too much sense. Normally I’d have said harvest moon would’ve been Japan’s game but yeah it’s on next years list. So maybe Shiren or Osumo or something else random

Tommy Hilfiger was holding us back from greatness this whole time!

Yo, Japan gets Harvest Moon?

Would've been nice to share that one.

Plus, the Direct really needed more farming games. :p

Lines up with a June/summer direct/presentation reveal for further releases

Is that table the leaked list of games for the N64? I recall that there was a long list of of games leaked and most of the spaces were blank - but based on the announced N64 launch titles the rest could be filled in. Is this the filled in list?
