Re, the leakers, I've been thinking: I harbor no ill will towards them, and I think the toxicity directed towards them is 100% unfounded. That being said, I mostly wish that we as a community would stop taking rumors as gospel. Sometimes the way people talk about them like they know exactly what Nintendo's upcoming release schedule will be just frustrates me. We don't. Before official announcements go out, the reality is that nothing is confirmed. The insiders and leakers like Emily, Nate, and Jeff Grubb generally have very good sources, but there could always be some change in plans or communication gap that we don't know about.

I guess it's sort of natural that a community focused so much on speculation would do this since a) Nintendo Directs in the modern era are few and far between, b) Nintendo keeps their release schedule more close to the chest than ever, and c) Insiders generally have a much, much better track record than the days of the Gamecube-Wii era when stuff like a Wii Kid Icarus game that never came to fruition was so heavily rumored by Matt Casamassina. But the reality is that they're still not official Nintendo announcements.

I posted this in the Zelda thread but whatever, found this interesting, the thing in front of the glider at the end of the trailer:

...y'know this is a fair point

it could very well disappear for a while like splatoon 3 and zelda did
I'd be prepared for that simply because there's April, June, July and probably September that'll have games announced in February. Maybe even The Christmas Title gets a first glimpse.

I'd like to believe Pikmin 4 is a summer game but we saw so little I'm hedging my bets.

Another nitpick I had

Why was a trailer for Fall Guys Season 2 included?

Yet another example of odd pacing / inclusions that made these feel more like ad reels (which yes ofc they ultimately are) and less like celebrations for fans

Yeah idk how amazing the February direct will be. Just whatever direct or presentation has Drake in it will be amazing. It will be January 2017 Part 2

I guess it really shouldn't come as a surprise that none of the rumored rereleases proved to be true and that only Goldeneye which was believed to be dead and Kirby which no one ever remotely considered as an option ended up being real. It just proves that we should stop believing and hoping for anything and then maybe the things that we would have hoped for would actually happen.

Marketing contract I'm sure.

Just think of all the farming simulators as the equivalent to FPS and live service games on Xbox and Playstation. Someone had a very successful game and now everyone wants a slice of the pie.

The Direct is a marketing tool first and foremost, at least nowadays. It used to be a space for Nintendo to keep fans engaged during the WiiU drought days, and now it is a space to advertise the upcoming lineup of the Switch, which makes sense when you consider how many releases the Switch has

Just me or is the "anime rpg aesthetic" so overdone by now its not even appealing anymore? I guess I can't blame designers as all of the most popular rpgs these days use the style (Persona/Xenoblade/FireEmblem), but man do they lack identity and look so generic. The new Fire Emblem conceptually just looks like more of the same, it's all so tired. Maybe I'm just burned out on RPGs but none of the ones shown looked like must-play experiences.

Pikmin 4 is exciting. I love the Pikmin series and its been a long time since a main title so that'll be a pickup for sure, and as little was shown was one of the best parts of the show. I appreciate how original the series is.

Tears of the Kingdom seemed to only show up to reveal the title which is a cool title at least. It felt very much like it was here out of obligation.

New Mario Kart courses look fun. Loving the Merry winter one. Wish they were coming sooner.

Octopath Traveler 2 looks okay but it feels like they're doing too many of these HD2D games too frequently. I enjoyed the first game a lot but I'm not sure if I want to play another game like that again. The characters look less interesting this time around.

It was an alright show overall but not much stood out. I'd be more interested in the RPG's if I had any confidence in them to tell an engaging story that isn't packed with cliches.

How good the Feb direct will be, or whether we'll even have a Feb direct, depends on when Nintendo shows the new Switch. My best guess is FE direct in December, and then either the Switch Pro reveal w/ games blowout in January (so no Feb direct), or Switch Pro reveal on its own in Jan followed by our usual Feb direct. It could also just be a combo hardware and software showcase in Feb.

I was watching the Direct on the subway with shitty ass internet so I missed announcements like the next wave of Xenoblade DLC, Kirby, and TUNIC coming to Switch. Now that I'm home sifting through all the announcements it seems like a solid show though I kind of panicked at the end cause I'm pretty sure they went over 40 mins, but all is well now that they revealed The Legend of Zelda; The Origami Kingdom.

Also I really thought Atelier was Genshin Impact at first oops

Metroid, Zelda, and F-Zero re-releases? No.

If the next thing comes out next year, 2022 will have been late-stage.
So if other major software gets announced for Switch ahead of Drake or Drake not getting released till holidays or later then that is late stage or the focus is elsewhere?

Software is pretty fluid with hardware now where Switch will still probably be getting major software in conjunction with Drake for a bit.

Me: Aw man! All these anime weeb games are taking over the direct. Mario Kart and more n64 games are barely enough for me…if only we had mo-

Mario movie, Mario Game, Zelda Game, Metroid games, Drake. Core franchises seem to be stacking up. Sounds a bit too good to be true honestly.

Settle down Beavis lol

We all know there's obviously new hardware coming. Zelda was supposed to be this year and the furthest thing out they showed was Pikmin 4 without any gameplay. That seems pretty suspect.

We're gonna be getting alot of the same kinds and types of games that 3DS got in 2017/2018 with alot of then being sequels, remasters, RPGs, ports, and some cross gen sprinkled in. They're saving the big guns for Switch 2.

I'm a firm believer that there won't be a long cross gen period like some think there will. If they keep putting everything on OG Switch for several more years nobody will buy Switch 2 because what's the point? Average Joe doesn't care about dlss and all the extra horsepower if the game is available on their current system, especially in today's economic world.

I pray that the Metroid Prime Remastered is still real and without a date locked down for Prime 4 yet they are probably holding it close to their vest. Wind waker and TP will come whenever I guess, maybe as a collection with OOT and MM down the road.

Seems odd that they just uploaded that Bayonetta showcase straight to Youtube. I haven't watched it yet so maybe it contains something that they didn't want to include in the Direct, but I feel like Nintendo's not really putting their weight behind this game.

I trust Emily, and she has a near spotless track record. She's the most reliable insider, bar none, because she seems to wait until her info is ironclad before sharing. She's also polite and nice, and she deserves the same courtesy in turn, so I hope people won't rag on her.

That said, I hope Grubb (and his chorus of crickets) stays off future Nate podcasts about Nintendo. The guy's wheelhouse is Xbox, and honestly he talks a lot but I don't feel like he contributes much.

Regarding the Direct itself, I knew as soon as the time was announced, it was going to be a Japanese-focused show. And sure enough, there were a lot of JRPGs (farming sims? lol), yet more Fire Emblem, even more Kirby... yeah. Hey, at least they (re) announced Pikmin 4!

Just looked on Switch eShop on the coming soon bit

. Tunic
. Neir Automata
. No Man's Sky
. Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope
. New Tales from the Borderlands
. Bayonetta 3 at long long last
. Harvestella
. It Takes Two
. Sonic Frontiers
. Sifu
. Pokemon Scarlet & Violet
. Fire Emblem Engage
. Theatrhythm Final Bar Line
. Kirby's Return to Dreamland Deluxe

All those games there to pre-order right now if you want, all within the next half a year, and that list is not extensive of all the games you can actually see there nor does it have games we know are going to release in that same period but just aren't available to preorder for whatever reason (Persona 5 Royal and Octopath Traveller 2 for example). And once that 6 months is done Tears of the Kingdom will be right around the corner and there will maybe have been a Direct to show us even more.

Switch is still seeing plenty of support, can't really understand the disappointment. And Splatoon 3 just came out like 4 days ago to boot.

Tell me about SIFU please? Is it a good game? I love martial arts.
it is a game i would play elsewhere if you have the means. I dont personally think sifu should be played at the likely 30 fps the switch will play it at.

Not sure if this was already mentioned in this thread, but did anyone else find it odd that quite a few games in this direct have Feb 24, 2023 as a release date? Have we ever had multiple releases on the same date before?

The reason I want Metroid Prime HD on Switch is not only that I could play it again... I want people to experience it for the first time, or give it a second chance.
If one game deserves a second chance on a successful console, that's Metroid Prime, even more than Wind Waker (Prime Trilogy doesn't count, it was just a limited collector's item).

I don't care about its 20th anniversary, Nintendo can announce it in the next general Direct. The game deserves more than a tweet drop.

Yeah. I wouldn't read into that.

I noticed 2/24/23 and 10/28/22 being particularly crowded for apparently no reason! Kirby and Octopath II release on the same date, then Bayonetta 3 and some other game that was shown. I never buy multiple games on the same day.

Yeah, it's definitely happened in the past. I think the day Monster Hunter Rise launched was another one of these situations

Lots of insider-bashing on Era as well as usual. Almost a national sport it seems. lol
