News Nintendo Direct announced for September 13th (7 AM PT, 10 AM ET, 3 PM BST, 4 PM CEST)

I started doubting Prime for this direct when Emily had the “why does prime remaster have to be announced in a direct, it can be dropped on Twitter” comment lol

Think Grubb just took the L on it being a holiday release I guess
maybe they'll tweet it during the State of Play

Dude, they’re making educated guesses and chasing the high of the one time they got something right. Not putting their neck out there.

Predicting a direct in September isn’t too hard considering there has consistently been a September direct and it’s right before TGS. Otherwise, ‘insiders’ are just hurting the reception of these announcements from hardcore fans since the set false expectations.
lol Nate said the exact date. You sound really distraught over all of this

We need to come to terms with the fact that no Direct is going to please absolutely everybody. Just because one might contain games you don't care about doesn't mean other people wouldn't be thrilled by those games.

I tried to tell ya'll Zelda ports made no sense. They're not gonna release TP and WW together, and they're certainly not going to do it ~8 months before ToTK (gonna take a while to get used to typing that)

Metroid Prime will come, just wait lol. If you want to play it now just play it on GameCube, Wii, Wii U, or an emulator or something

i wonder if the sony direct will be better, its funny because it seemed like nintendo was going to crush it, but its totally possible it will be better now.

Lol I really thought my expectations of GB/GBC NSO, Prime remake, Fire Emblem, Zelda ports, and BOTW 2 full trailer were fairly conservative

Honestly, the only reasons why I was expecting the Zelda ports and Metroid Prime remaster was because some insiders like Jeff Grubb felt pretty certain they would be there. If not for that, I would never have predicted or expected those games to show up in this Direct, given how crowded this fall and holiday lineup already is.

Nintendo’s traditional March “end of FY” release slot is still wide open. I wouldn’t be surprised if we still see Metroid Something this FY.

I think people just think they are waiting to show new games in the best light. These games will come to OG Switch apparently. I’m convinced now
Is the alternative speculation that they are presently showing titles that won't release on Switch and are just not mentioning it? Because I can assure you there is zero world in which that would happen and you have nothing to be convinced about.

Further, It's pretty much set that they're taking a "family of systems" approach with some cross-gen titles or something similar

I gotta say it's impressive how off base the rumors were on this one. Goldeneye and FE were on the money, but the Zelda ports and Prime continue to not exist despite being rumored since like 2017. And everyone saying this was going to be Gamecube heavy when there wasn't even a single Gamecube game is...well that was just straight wrong. Solid direct but easily the weakest general since February 2021. If Pikmin 4 and BOTW2 weren't there, this genuinely would have been bad.

To be clear, I'm sure BOTW 2 will kick complete and utter ass and solidify itself as a surefire GOTY contender, but man every time it's shown, the trailer gets shorter. This is going to be a long, long wait for the next direct/Pro announcement.

Them not being in this Direct doesn't mean anything for them not releasing together, I do however agree that this was their last shot before ToTK

What interests me with Direct discourse is that people still sometimes seem to expect the dynamic for Switch to change during a Direct, as if the system isn't yet approaching the end of the 6th year on the market. Nintendo have rarely used September to confirm all that many first-party games, and priortise advertising autumn and winter releases; they do the same thing here and people are surprised. Switch has been full of Japanese games, especially RPGs for years - Cloud games have become increasingly present; yet people are surprised. I'm not immune to this cognitive dissonance - I expected Nintendo to add more systems to NSO despite the fact Nintendo are clearly happy moving at a snail's pace. Even though I think of myself as pretty clear-headed on what Switch is and what it offers, I still let my personal tastes and hopes (GIVE ME WARIO LAND YOU COWARDS) inflect my thinking.

I do think that, in all the hype and bluster, it obscures that Switch is now set for exclusive content right through the fiscal year, with Nintendo's biggest upcoming game now nailed down with both a title and a solid release date. I'm a little surprised - but pleased - they're confident enough to nail May 12th down for Zelda. I'm also agreed the pacing and mix of things was really all over the place, but the software dynamic on Switch at this point in time is settled.

Time for me to ask my favorite post-direct question

Does anyone have a link to an updated release line up graphic? (or plain boring text I guess)

So is the next stop for Nintendo hype a February Direct or are we thinking Drake event before that/around that time?

Oh yeah, I wouldn't have expected Zelda ports for this year. Just that they would be announced, perhaps. Prime is really the more shocking one by far imo

Could always come next week after TGS? Early October still open for them

Just because a Direct contain games some people care about, doesn't mean other people can't be upset.

Yeah it’s gonna be a great game, but with how little they’ve shown us, it’s hard to get excited past the idea of it existing.

"The things we thought were happening not happening proves that the other thing (the Dane) we know is happening is gonna happen sooner."

In the end, everyone is responsible for managing their own expectations or deciding to indulge in the hype culture. Journalists get paid to report on rumours, news sites are incentivized to talk up speculation on can't-miss-events. The only one without a profit motive here are video game fans themsevles, and they can weigh individually whether they get more joy than disappointment out of this self-reinforcing cycle.
When probably 99% of the noise surrounding the hobby itself basically stems from rumors and leaks at this point, it's difficult to tell people "hey manage your expectations." I didn't mean just insiders on Fami or Era, it's literally everywhere and it's beyond ridiculous. You take the speculation thread out of this forum and it probably loses 50% of its activity.

they always do, its actually bizarre that people legit forget this every year.
Do we count Splatoon for that then? It is a major EPD release they could push through the holiday.
There is a major, exclusive Mario title sat in October with Bayonetta 3 coming the week after. Sparks of Hope might be Ubisoft, but it's still a Mario game that's likely going to shift 5 to 10 million copies, coming a month after an EPD franchise (Splatoon 3) which has likely cleared 5 million on the launch weekend.

There's no other title because Nintendo already have the big sellers lined up, even if they haven't made Sparks of Hope themselves.
Yeah between this, Splatoon and Bayonetta, that could be it. Still a pretty stacked year.

Feels like Jeff Grubb shares rumors lightly, I had my doubts but now he's definitively not reliable for nintendo stuff.
These ports were already rumoured for last year, I think nintendo just want to keep them for themselves at this point.

The catch is gonna be: you have to create a room with friends in the NSO app and can't play with randoms.

Also I'm not sure I believe that the Xbox version won't have online tbqh.

The article claims it’s exclusive to Nintendo. Must have been a trade-off. Xbox gets Achievements, better visuals, etc; Nintendo gets original game plus online play.

And yeah, not being able to play with randoms pretty much effectively renders the multiplayer useless for me.

2023's gonna have Fire Emblem, Prime remake, Octopath 2, Tears of the Kingdom, Pikmin 4, and Kirby Return to Dreamland. Not a bad start to 2023 by any means!

That was a pretty good Direct in my opinion. Fire Emblem Engage, Octopath Traveler II, Theatrhythm Final Bar Line Raincode, and Pikmin 4 all caught my attention when it comes to new releases.

Then there were the remasters/ remakes with Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse, Tales of Symphonia, Rune Factory 3 Special, Story of Seasons: A Wonderful Life, and the first three Front Mission games.

Finally there were the updates like the title and date reveal for The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Harvestella demo, Xenoblade Chronicles 3 expansion pass details, Splatfest announcement, and a new NSO N64 roadmap. Overall I'm satisfied with what was shown.

It is funny seeing all the complaints about too many RPGs and Farming sims on the system when those genres are extremely popular on handhelds. The handheld audience has always been Nintendo's biggest market when it comes to the split between home and handheld systems so it's not surprising to see games on the system lean more to their tastes.

Them not being in this Direct doesn't mean anything for them not releasing together, I do however agree that this was their last shot before ToTK
I don't believe it has ever made sense to expect them released together. They will be sold as full priced (or $50) games separately like SSHD was. Nintendo is not known for throwing away money.

I don't care that the rumors didn't pan out because I don't care about ports of games I already own, so great for me

So is the next stop for Nintendo hype a February Direct or are we thinking Drake event before that/around that time?

Nope, Drake will be early 2023. This would be the last month to somehow reliably announce it for Nov 2022, but i dont think that this happens anymore.

It's a shame that Zelda does not have a full reveal trailer yet, especially how great that BOTW one was.
The BotW reveal one was good, but the best BotW trailer was the Switch presentation one. And I feel like we will get something similar with the Switch 2 presentation show.

6/10 direct. Some great content, but the presentation itself was so bad. Pikmin 4 and Tears of the Kingdom reveals felt obligatory instead of inspired and exciting, wtf? No Metroid crushed me, and even Zelda ports would've softened the blow. And I love Pikmin and Zelda, so the fact that both showed here and this was still a very weak direct is shocking. Fire Emblem looked pretty good but that's never a day 1 for me, either. NSO was nice, the Goldeneye situation is hilarious lol

We wait for Jan/Feb for the Drake reveal. You can tell they're holding back.
Fire emblem and goldeneye made it better for me personally but I agree

So, squids? What did you think? This made the Direct 10/10 and you know it.

The ports were completely off my radar until they were mentioned by Grubb. Given BOTW 2's release day in spring, I didn't even consider Nintendo launching them early next year. So if they were gonna come out, I thought it had to be this year and this year is already pretty full. For the Metroid Prime Remaster, I was 50/50 on it showing up before Grubb talked about it. That was the one thing he seemed most certain on but I guess the info on that just wasn't very good in the end.

People really have to start self-reflecting: if you see a list of rumored stuff, and that list has literally everything you would like? It probably won't happen all in one go, if at all. Exercise caution.

I would’ve loved a TOTK blowout, but I’m absolutely not worried about the lack of one

This game will dominate Nintendo’s marketing for months early next year. To the point where we’ll almost be sick of it lol

What does Pikmin 4 in 2023 mean for EPD10? No 2D Mario next year? If we are assuming Pikmin 4 was rebooted in 2019, that's the same time when Maker 2 was shipped.

Nope, Drake will be early 2023. This would be the last month to somehow reliably announce it for Nov 2022, but i dont think that this happens anymore.
But why early 2023? I've only loosely followed that hardware thread because I don't particularly care for the attitude of some but what is making people so sure something is coming early next year.

Yeah it would be one thing if there was like an “insider chatter” thread and it was quarantined there. But every speculation cycle it informs the broader gaming discourse. We’re told to trust them by default and then sometimes they’re wrong so we’re just left in this perpetual state of Schrodinger’s Insider.

Just got around to watching it at work.
Very Weeb direct (but im not complaining lol). It was very good, the only downside was that everything is 2023. I was really hoping for FE this year.

exactly

I'm gonna shit on this here direct cause it sucked aaassss but you won't see me bitchin tomorrow
did you at least like the Pikmin 4 announcement, even though it was little?

I thought the Direct was good but not great personally. Multiple games I'm interested in but none that I'm over the moon for. Fist of the North Star fitness boxing bamboozled me like no other announcement maybe ever lol, got my biggest reaction upon seeing Kenshiro and then....... I'll buy it for the memes
