Honestly though, there comes a point where the sheer saturation of JRPGs and similarly slow-paced games gets tiring, and I think this is nearing that point :(

Fuck yes @ Pikmin 4 though!
Yeah...and i like JRPGs....
lol lots of bad takes in here

Radiant Silvergun
Harvestella
Story of Seasons
The Spike Chunsoft game
Fire Emblem
Goldeneye with online play (+Mario parties)
Pikmin 4
Tales of Symphonia
Octopath2
Theaterythm
Fatal Frame 4
Return to Dreamland Deluxe
+whatever they end with

This was packed
The problem is less the amount, and more the skew. It definitely did cather more to certain preferences. For me personally it was a B-, since i like most of what was shown...but i would like more quality action/platforming for the future (kirby port does not count). As it stands, switch will become a jrpg machine from october on.
They still aren't ready to show anything? I'm officially worried about this game.
Not "not ready", more "dont want to spoil much". BotW hat one of its biggest strength in
how people found stuff out by themselves.
If this title had been shared on 4 chan, everyone would have thought it was fake.
I mean, Twilight Princess, Skyward Sword, Breath of the wild...yeah, almost always.
That was an underwhelming trailer tbh :(
It was fine...but i felt like most trailers for BotW except the last onefellt off because they tried to not show to much.

So general consensus is this Direct signaled the end of the Switch and we are expecting the successor with BotW2 next spring? The tone of the Direct (especially for Nintendo first party) seemed to be "we are done with Switch, we are holding things back for Switch 2."
They announced a brand new fire Emblem, a new pikmin, and tons of new games including long term support via NSO through 2023. I get the opposite vibe.

Definitely curious as to what's up with Metroid Prime. Given that Nate and Emily were bang on with Fire Emblem, pretty weird that they were so off on that one.

LOL.

The things I wanted most were Wind Waker and/or Twilight Princess, followed by GB/GBC/GBA.

I am a clown for expecting anything.

Honestly, I don't think a few remasters could've made this better. I don't get why "We're releasing an old game likely at full price" is such a huge announcement to some people.
Actual new releases got basically a "Here's a logo, here's 5 seconds, and watch a new trailer on youtube" which is baffling to me and reminds me of Wii U era Nintendo when stuff like The Wonderful 101 had shoddy reveals via gaming sites and Youtube after directs.
Why would you talk more about a decare-old Kirby game than some of your shiny new releases?!
I guess I can see why they skipped E3 time this year.

As for third parties, eh. Hear that Octopath 1's story was bad, so not holding my breath for the next one. Also I just don't like the look of 2D HD games. They're like devoid of color. And as not a fan of farming sims and tRPGs, that leaves... Barely anything actually new, really.

Peasants:

"meh meh meh, Zelda trailer showed nothing, Pikmin was a logo, no Metroid, everything was farming sim"

Me, cultured animu enjoyer:

"Toothpaste-chan from FE looks kawaii, the swimsuits for Xenoblade 3 are finally here and I can date-sim in my chill farm however I want to"

Gonna toot my own horn about the lack of TP/WW here.

... What???

Insiders claimed this direct would have It Takes Two and probably Fire Emblem. Nobody claimed to know anything else for a fact.
Grubb was insisting this was where they were showing the Wii U Zelda ports alongside BotW2. Obviously the latter came to pass but at this point they pretty much had to show it, and it makes the former a glaring omission. He's great getting Direct timings, but I at the very least am not going to put stock in his reporting regarding Direct content going forward

I feel like sometimes, people feel these Directs too much than actually being realistic: Not everything is going to be for you.

Personally, I only have interest in the new Fire Emblem, the Tales of Symphonia port and Zelda. But that's fine by me. If I don't factor in my personal preferences speaking this wasn't the best Direct ever, but it's also FAR from the worst, imo.

I do think they could have shown more of the new Zelda, but I do think they are not showing much so they can blow everyone away when the time is right. Remember all we had seen of BOTW until 2 months before release was the TUTORIAL AREA. That might have seemed like a lot at the time but it really wasn't. We knew nothing about the story, the Champions, what Zelda looked like, NOTHING. All that happened at thr Switch Reveal with one of the best trailers ever made for a video game and that panned out well for Nintendo. They're probably just repeating that - with or without new hardware. I don't see any reason to be worried.

I lol'ed hard at the Mario-> Pikmin plottwist and then the mobile curve ball just to announce Pikmin 4 anyways. xD

Completely forgot about Fatal Frame 4 Remaster/Port

The game list overall there were a good piece here and there. But it did feel a bit overboard with the amount of farming sims

No Metroid legitimately makes me weep.

Just got out of staff meeting and checked. Pikmin 4 is neat. Zelda is great. BUT METROID!? NO WIND WAKER OR TP?

Despite the curious omissions, it was overall pretty good IMO.

Fire Emblem Engage looks fantastic.

Feeling good about calling neither Zelda remasters or Metroid Prime remaster would be here.

Zelda - it's far too close to BotW 2 to be putting two full-fat Zelda games on the market. Metroid Prime - the perfect showcase for the high resolution of Drake. Makes sense to me.

So Goldeneye, Pikmin 4, Radiant Silvergun and Zelda:TotK all good (and the saving graces of the direct).

Just really wanted the Metroid Prime 1 re-release - wonder if it'll be Twitter announced or just not releasing anytime soon.

At this point I feel like they introduce a new service model instead of adding GB or GCN to NSO. It's so weird that they aren't just adding it.
Something something Retro Pass with GCN games including HD Remaster of Zelda, Metroid Prime, F-Zero and some GB to GBA games.

I think this direct taught us a very valuable lesson…never trust insiders kids
You mean the same insiders who got Fire Emblem details 100% correct? The same ones who said "BotW2" would get a title drop? Yeah, sure, okay lmfao

"All time" is a bit much considering the Wii U era, but of the Switch era? Absolutely. Big "we don't have anything more for this console" energy
  • Mainline FE
  • Pikmin 4
  • New Zelda
  • Octopath 2

Yeah, sure, Nintendo tooootally doesn't have anything else lined up for the Switch /s

Outside of ports and a game we already knew (Zelda) this direct did nothing for me. Easily my least favorite in some time.

The same insiders who accurately predicted the timing of the Direct, and some of its contents?
If you’re convincing journalists we’re getting games announced that aren’t, then yeah, I’d rather not hear from them:

Look at the long game. These directs are necessary when a system is basically on its way “out”
This. They obviously skipped E3 to have an okay show in September.

They rolled out Pikmin 4 and BOTW2 with absolutely little to no gameplay, because they're waiting on the official Switch 2 announcement event and that's definitely coming after the Holidays looking at how they announced Wave 3 of MK8D's Booster Course pass THIS early.

Pack it up folks, we're not getting any Nintendo material until February.

pikmin 4 was indeed a lovely surprise, but even its announcement was ??? Why did they talk about bloom no one even plays bloom.

It was a big improvement visually over 3 so im very glad we got a pikmin 4 to use the switch's power.

Also I kinda wish that Pikmin segment hadn't announced Pikmin 4. They showed off nothing anyway and didn't really give a date so it didn't need to be there and it would have been absolutely hilarious to see all the reactions to a Pikmin segment just being a recap of bloom.

That was probably the best Direct of all time for me.

Not the content itself, more like.. the actual experience. My heart was pounding like mad, and every time Koizumi appeared, it skipped several beats thinking that now... now? But no.. not then.. and then.. and then.. And then I glanced at the clock... 10 minutes left.. 5 minutes left... when the Kirby game dropped, I felt an icy feeling near the pit of my navel... one more game.. Zelda or Metroid.. Zelda or Metroid ..

Then, the Zelda trailer hit and.. I went through every single roof I could go through.

The beginning with the murals really set the tone well, the skydiving, the fact that it looks like maybe we'll be able to drop down from sky to surface after all... the environments, the power that makes islands rise (?) ... every single frame just showcased something incredible, just like the other teasers - but this time, it felt real, more real than ever before.

The freaking spaceship. He's SURFING ON IT.

This game is gonna surpass every game ever for me.

(I GUESS that I was a LITTLE disappointed that it was another "teaser", but the name reveal - Tears of the Kingdom isn't the best name ever, but hey - and date (May!) was enough to make me freak out maybe even more than I thought I would do)

But even apart from that, we got a LOT of very, very, good stuff - Fire Emblem Engage, Octopath 2, Theathrythm Final Fantasy, the pixel indie game with the art gallery, Harvestella Demo, Atelier 3, the Danganronpa dev's new game.. and Pikmin 4 announcement-ish!

As far as I'm concerned, yep, a 10.

Honestly I'm surprised most folks are as underwhelmed as they are.

Goldeneye was finally revealed in existence (along with an N64 roadmap, bitching on the internet works), we got Mario Kart news of the Wave 3 booster pass, Harvestella gets a demo, LiS Arcadia Bay collection, Tunic and It Takes Two, Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life (highkey a gamecube port I didn't expect but will welcome gladly), Sifu, Pikmin 4, Oddballers, Fitness Boxing Fist of the North Star, and a subtitle AND release date for Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.

Honestly a more than satisfactory direct for me, a solid 8.5/10.

There's still faith in Metroid Prime, WW/TP, and F-Zero. It would have been nice to get a release date for Alan Wake but I still don't think we'll be waiting long. Shame Resident Evil is cloud, but if the demo runs smoothly enough on my Switch I'll likely pick it up. For now, I am content.

Is the Zelda title like a triple entendre?

Tears (crying)
Tears (like the verb, tearing something open)
Tier (layered)

Anyway, amazing Direct!

When Grubb says what he knows is there (It Takes Two) then you can bet that'll be there. When he expects WW/TP because it makes sense then he's literally speculating just like the rest of us so there's no reason to treat it as anything else.

Same on with any insider.
Some of us avoid the rumor stuff on purpose because it is so often wrong when it comes to Nintendo.
So you avoid the rumors and then blame insiders for inflating expectations when in reality they did the exact opposite. Emily specifically said to temper expectations for this one.

But okay.

heh I got what I wanted, got a new FE game. Disappointed at no GBA expansion for NSO.

Also, no Metroid LULZ.

Story of Seasons A Wonderful Life is the one that no one talks about but that hypes me so much. It's by far, by faaaaar, my favorite game of the series because of how different it is.
No hitting fucking rocks with a hammer and cutting trees all day to get a big bed. Just farming, animals, and most importantly the focus is all on the village and the characters, especially your spouse and child. It's really really great.

Have yet to play a FE game. This might be my first one, but the ties to past characters doesn't appeal to me.

Didn't play Octopath. Might play 2 if it's good. Maybe.

Pikmin 4 is cool. Only showing a logo and a screenshot is not.

I'm done with BotW 2 teasers. This is literally the 4th teaser trailer. Either reveal the game properly or don't show anything at all. What a letdown.

My thoughts exactly. This feels like end of the generation house cleaning. Crazy to think that prime 4 which was announced st the start of the console generation wont be out until the next switch is out

My actual disappointments are as follows, expanding on my previous post:

  • lack of heavily rumoured HD Gamecube ports (Zelda, FZero, MP)
  • lack of new NSO platform (GB) - timeline wise... wasn't this a sure win?
  • no 2D Mario or real movie news
  • still no genshin impact
  • no small eshop titles (eg. dr mario)

My wins are:
  • fire emblem! (still own and have yet to play TH, but i like seeing fanbases happy)
  • kirby RtD Deluxe is a nice surprise (fake edit: shit it's $60, eh, I have a bit of kirby overload rn somehow. Maybe by feb)
  • zelda title and locked date, bring on Drake!
