at some point I should probably stop messing around, but I’m learning a lot about the terrible possibilities in unity by just doing every single thing wrong

okay, last one for a while, I’m gonna reserve this terrible power for like more significant updates and funnier problems

I uh found out about the Unity Recorder so making these mess updates has clearly become TOO easy

Downloading Star Ocean: The Last Hope on PS4. Got this years ago but haven't played it yet. Ready to start my adventure of great voice acting and edgy mavericks.

Just saw this on my Instagram explore

I only played the first and it’s kinda very innacurate

After all Takahashi did say that the series was modeled after Shounen anime/manga

Yeah no this is pretty funny (2 isn't really sexually mature in any way, it just has overly sexualized character designs, and from a thematic standpoint that sort of stuff isn't even there). I can kinda see where they're coming from with 3 being more about adulthood than the previous 2 games but I don't think the pattern holds for those 2

Honestly you're probably better off just mapping each game to whatever Shonen was popular during development. For example, 3 feels pretty similar to modern Shonen like Demon Slayer and JJK in a lot of ways

Are we talking Ryzen APU here? No dedicated GPU?
ToA certainly is one of the less scaleable PC games in terms of settings, though that's overall sadly a trend still with many JP 3rd parties on PC. Capcom is a welcome exception to this rule, mostly.

Yeah Ryzen apu. But yeah I was looking at my games (mostly jp 3rd parties) and you are right the options are limited.

Meanwhile Rise runs super smooth and has great options. I just wish capcom had cross-save/progression lol.

I'm interested in knowing, if you don't mind, what softsynth/sample library/soundfont you've been using for your tracks for that positively unhinged sound? Or is it just a bunch of messing around with the pitch bend and filters on otherwise "normal" sounding patches?

I'm incredibly frustrated at this point with the lack thereof. I'd rather continue the game on the Deck tbh, but can't, for all the folks I'm playing with are on Switch. Having put 300+ hours into the latter version also doesn't make switching to the PC one any more inviting. Ugh.

I guess you could say that Nigeria is a shell of its former self.

(Didn't watch the video.)

I don’t know who it was here who mentioned putting ice cubes in hot coffee but I’ve been doing it lately and I’m really liking it
I don't know if I mentioned it but I do it all the time. Screw hot coffee, iced is where it is.

Usually I make a pot of coffee and then stick it in the fridge so I have nice cold coffee the next few mornings.

oh I make my own sounds for the most part

this one’s especially unhinged because everything in there is a sound effect I built for possible use in the game, and I just sampled them

for some things I’ll record ambient sound, or a lot of like… bad single note guitar through a shitty amp that gets radio feedback — perfect for resampling into basic waveshapes that aren’t as “clean” as expected or don’t have the “expected bias” that everyone models against

I’ll use just about any software instrument in Ableton Live or Logic Pro and do obscene automation, bounce it, then resample it

I’ve been using orchestral sample packs for some stuff in the game, mixed with marching band VSTs and my own sounds

also a big fan of the Puremagnetik Retro Synths — not for any of the patches (not a huge fan) but all of the simple pieces and samples in the Vector > Components folder, which I usually take tiny tiny tiny looped snippets of as new waves

So Famiboards quietly got into game publishing?
Well, I always wanted to start a publishing company with a Grasshopper/Devolver punk-like philosophy. Yes, business-wise it makes no sense, but at least company lunches sound fun as hell lol

also, I’ve been using a fairly generic but surprisingly good slap bass in Ableton to give a few of the boss-style tracks extra energy. did a few tweaks, but not likely to replace it unless I meet an extremely talented pro bono slap bassist

love to vocode things that should not be vocoded and then back into themselves with mid-long release times

have a really old Yamaha keyboard that sounds super goofy that I’ll sample

use the old school vocoder synth in Logic for unhinged airy sounds

a dash of Moog Model 15 app, nanoloop, Korg gadget, old samples from I think something called Musyc, uhhh there’s one where you draw a wave and tap the screen for just pure annoying sounds that I chop up a lot, I’ve got a Roland MC-808 in my closet that has a thousand faders that can automate with magnets

sometimes literally old tape recordings of mine

resampling pieces of old old songs I did

lots of sounds far outside their “normal context”

oh, and accordion, played really slow so it’s practically gasping

philosophically, my approach is “make a lot of different noise and bring it all together in unexpected ways”

I’m not one to create a perfect sampler based on a physical instrument that exists or a piece of hardware I want to emulate — I’m always making as much mess as possible

oh!!! and the best thing for the glitchiest bullshit you can imagine, prime for chopping and turning into Simpler waves:

feed PSDs as raw sound data into Audacity

no joke I used a PDF of student loan paperwork in my university application portfolio

and I got the fuckin’ grant

I have no idea why, but Grögol Bonanza would be such a great name for a country-influenced punkband from eastern Europe :)
I just did a thing

Bought Ghost Trick
You did the right thing!

I don't know much about music but I assume this is like when Brandon Farris puts recipes through google translate multiple times and then follows the result.

I don’t know who that is but that is definitely the vibe

Have two cold brew pitchers so I can have one to use and one ready the next day or two (I go through a lot of cold brew when it’s summer).

Looks like it's taking shit out of context to make fanfiction.

Funny story, I remember wandering into Best Buy a week after BOTW came out and bought it there, no switch consoles were in stock.

I went to an electronics retailer in Canada called The Source a couple days after, and the worker at the counter said he didn't expect to see a Switch on their shelves for another year.

A day later I found this forum online that told you when switch systems were in stock but it was Canada wide. I was living in Halifax at the time so I got notified maybe once a day. There was also a chat for the forum. A few days after I joined some guy said he had a Switch and was in Halifax, I messaged him and he said to meet him at x place in an hour. It was late at night and raining, so I was thinking that I'm about to risk getting mugged for $460CAD for a switch in a parking lot. It felt pretty sketchy, but eventually he said he'd meet me where I was, it felt like he was in a rush, he said he really needed the money. Eventually he rolls up with someone else in the car, since he rolled up to where there was no street lights I felt like I should get ready to boot it. It turned out this guy had bought a second switch because he wanted colored joycons and had to sell his grey joycon switch because he used his wife's money and his wife was the person in the car with him and she looked PISSED even while I was paying him. He had like a triple bagged and stapled Toys R Us (RIP but it's still in Canada) bag with the switch inside, I give him the money and booted it back to my residence.

Yeah, I risked it for BOTW. This was all real.

Whoever made that Instagram picture probably only remembers the fantastical areas you travel to Xenoblade 1 but beyond that, it's tone is pretty dark. The game begins with people dying in a battle with machines. The story is a revenge plot for a majority of the run time. Shulk isn't some optimistic, go-get-em protagonist. After his hometown is attacked, he's borderline unhinged. He panic attacks when he thinks his friends are about to die. He straight up tells people that revenge is his main intention.

If anything, it's Xenoblade 2 that's more about childhood as we see the world through Rex's eyes, who is much younger than Shulk or Noah. He's overly optimistic which contrasts with with his costars who have lived and seen much more than he has.

This is why I went to the midnight launch.

Also: worth it.

While the timelines don’t really align Xenoblade had very heavy Gundam vibes for me (especially Seed/Destiny). The way the story unfolds is very similar to that series and a lot of mecha in general really. The Fallen Arm part pretty much used the exact same trope found in Gundam Seed and Code Geass where the characters were “stranded on an island”

Ended up playing Mario Kart on my hot spot. Had a few communication errors but got five races with zero issues back to back. Had one race I was doing so good and I was second place right at the end then it was chaos and I got red shelled and got stuck at last at the last second. Is Mario kart online always this crazy?

I went to the midnight launch

And asked for BotW for WiiU.

Everyone was so confused. The store clerks didn't even know where to find it. I had to come back the next day and help them look around the store.

Found out years later that the first print of BotW WiiU had a misprint on the back, where it showed the Wiimote as an available control scheme. They were going on eBay for nearly $1000 apiece if they were unwrapped. I kicked myself several times.

This is a story holy shit! I was completely invested to the end! This is awesome!

Started my DMC journey today (only ever played about halfway through the first one). Meant to do this for ages and it is finally happening.

First and only console so far I bothered to get at launch because I really wanted to play this game asap and wasn't one of the 13 people who owned a WiiU. Zero regrets.

Just to live in Nova Scotia is cool. It's such a cool name for a place to live!

Yo, what do we see? In Halifax, Nova Scotia?
Man, probably like, 200ft from where I bought my switch in that parking lot is a tree that I remember walking by one day and I thought a little dog was by himself behind the tree. I went to see what the dog was doing exactly, but the trash panda was already 5 feet up the tree and hissing at me in the 2 seconds it took me to walk to where the raccoon was when I saw it, they're fast climbers.
